  1. It kind of pisses me off that everything and everyone needs total social media implementation nowadays. I can already imagine playing some 3d horror game when suddenly something like "Mike12 is online" pops up, and then something like "Mike12 wants to send you drunk texts, accept? Well, we'll act like you pressed accept anyway." - and then a 10 second ad based on the keywords Mike had in his drunken slur of insults (probably not the kind of ads I'd show my mother, as a result.)

No thanks, I say. I'm rather going with that R-grade Cybernetic Rig, if we do cyberpunk, then we should make it cool at least.

  2. I don't have or know anyone with experience with online courses, but I've been talking to a language teacher a lot and she always stressed that conversation works best, optimally if you're a country which speaks that language, and you have to go and adapt. Not sure where you live and which language you're studying, but if you have the chance and money to travel, this would be the way to go.

  3. An unmodded Skyrim install doesn't even have 6 gigabytes... I could install at least 10 worthwhile games on the space that any newer EA title would take up. And I really doubt that the uncompressed audio sounds better on anything else than maybe a modern cinema, so I guess it really just boils down to a case of intentionally bad coding and making it big, for the above reasons.

  4. Interesting, I might need to buy the old thiefs on steam now (I seem to have misplaced my old CDs somewhere :( ).

Do they actually work with Win7 etc without having to jump through massive hoops? Just asking because at least the old boxed version of Thief 3 does not; in XP compa-mode it works but not completely (ladders do not function, etc)..

I've read through the TFix forum entries a bit, and it looks like Thief 1 runs on Win 7 if you use that update. Thief 2 should work too using the tafferpatcher, and I don't know about Thief 3, it already causes a few issues here on XP. (GOG versions should generally be pretty runnable on everything, though, if not, TFix and tafferpatcher.)

  5. There's also a new fan made HD patch for Thief here: http://www.ttlg.com/forums/showthread.php?t=134733

Important note says you need to have Steam turned off before you apply the patch.

Haven't used it myself, don't have Thief installed right now.

This thread is like Christmas. I've just installed TFix and EP2 - this already does a lot to the game, better meshes, better textures. I'm right now installing the HD textures too, to see how those fare.

  6. Huh, my page long reply was eaten in the merger. Again, short form:

Political solution: good, military intervention by any party: bad. Military intervention -> damages all of EU's political and economical stance, makes EU vulnerable to outside influence.

In regard to question about USA involvement: Involvement bad, always, also intelligence agency things - everything bad, no matter the excuse (only WW2 involvement was good by US and USSR, because I, as an Austrian wouldn't be happy about living in a Nazi state)

    - but also, every huge state craps on human rights and ignores laws, so it's unfair to single out one state and make them look like the only bad guy. -> short form of what I typed before it vanished.

  7. ^ A lot of people who really listen to what their politicians talk about will doubt how much they're in touch with reality...

And I've just read about an ultimatum by the Russian military, which says that they'll attack if the Ukrainian army doesn't surrender their arms. Does anybody know anything further about this?

( http://www.latimes.com/world/worldnow/la-fg-wn-ukrainian-president-russia-ultimatum-crimea-20140302,0,6104716.story this and another short article in a local Austrian newspaper)

  8. Crimea feels like Chernarus. And the airfield taken by the Russians like in the last mission in the ARMA 2 campaign. Am i the only one who thinks this resembles todays scenario?

    I thought the same thing...

  9. Watched a lot of walkthrough material on the game now, and I can somewhat see what they tried there. Creating a new stealth-adventure game and also pleasing the old Thief fans. They kind of did well on the first, but failed on the second. The story is just bad, as is the storytelling. For example, Garrett talks to a character after some incident and that guy mentions he has been away for a year - yet he doesn't really bother to wonder what the hell has happened during that time, why everything changed to Victorian style within a year, etc. And except for Garrett, all the characters are pretty forgettable and written crappily. The ending is just a disappointment. The gameplay seems pretty good, though, and I imagine someone who never played the original Thief games can enjoy it fully, but I can't, my mind always puts it in the context of the previous titles, and things just don't add up.

TL;DR - gameplay cool, story crap and completely subverts old titles' heritage

  10. Hi, this may interest you : https://community.bistudio.com/wiki/Damage

This is just what I needed, thanks a lot!

    ---------- Post added at 21:21 ---------- Previous post was at 19:32 ----------

Another small update; this time it's one of the enemy units, the cyborg assassin.

    Features:

    - fast movement speed

    - medium high armor

    - high damage

    - more or less stealthy (if placed right, he goes with surprise attacks)

    - practically deaf

    - almost perfect vision

    - attack script makes him very aggressive, no respect for personal space

    Bugs:

    - if alerted too early (that's why I made him deaf) he walks through walls and other obstacles

    - "fire" command doesn't make him shoot straight, so I had to use a bypass script to correct the vector speed of the projectiles

    - minor issues with the attack script (comes too close, walks into player) -- easily correctable

About the sound editing - I'm not sure about that one. Somehow couldn't get the style of the original Shock 2 assassin quite right. Not sure what exactly Brosius did to make that thing sound so weird, but I feel like hiding in his closet to ask him at night when he feels secure in his own house.

  11. I just solved (maybe not the perfect term) an issue I already forgot about - the health bar. I've been using the tank unitInfoType for the player character since the beginning now, but always noticed that the values that were displayed were never correct - sometimes, when I was killed, the bar was still half full. I just stumbled upon a thread that confirmed this, saying that a headshot with an M16 only caused the getDammage command to return a value of 0.5 - which means the soldier would have still been half functional. I then set the values for armorStructural and the differnet body parts to 1, and it displayed it correctly. I still don't know how the exact calculation for the armor and damage values looks like, though.

Now, the puzzling thing... the hits a unit can take to legs, arms, body and head are still not the same. I can shoot the player in the head twice and he dies, but he can take 4 shots to the legs (talking M16 here, again). I suspect that it could have something to do with the direct/indirect damage values of the bullet, too (as far as I got it, indirect damage isn't a fixed value either, but the parameter rather calculates the blast radius using other values, too.) Is it like with the tanks, too, that the hitpoints LOD also has some influence on it all? Does anybody have any further info? Would be interesting to decipher the system behind it. Back when I was still young and naive, I thought it's all fixed values ... haha ... ahahahahahhaa....

  12. Yes, you do that and I hope you succeed in it! OFP's movement solutions are maybe the first, maybe even the only things I would be concerned about; they are what prevents many mod ideas to be created. I have been very interested in a Thief-like mod since the beginning of the OFP modding scene, but that wouldn't work very well now wouldn't it?

Anyhow, keep on doing what you do.

I've already animated more horrible things, so a few cyborgs and movement tricks won't be too difficult (yet a bit maddening...) Years ago I've thought about doing Thief-like addons too, but that would be pretty bug-infested and hard to pull off... and an extremely high workload.

  13. I'm a fan of the System Shock series, preferring the first one to the 2nd, both being equally masterpieces from the legendary TTLG. Not to talk about Thief, belongs in my top 10 games any day. The company truly was something great.

What can be seen in the previous videos, especially in the latest one, you have made excellent progress with your project, and it looks really good! I especially love the sound environment atmosphere, please continue the style you have when you create the levels!

It's fascinating to await and see how well you can transfer it to the Real Virtuality. Count me in as the very interested! Now, just to have as fluid mouse & character movement as in Dark Engine...

Thanks, also a fan of the Looking Glass games. The sound work is in fact very much inspired by Eric Brosius' work on System Shock 2 and the Thief series (also the most fun thing for me to experiment around with, and the RV engine is nicely open in that regard). The movement and animation issues are a bit annoying, but can be managed. The aiming deadzone can be eliminated (minGunTurn, maxGunTurn) and with the right modified animations, I could probably reduce the interpolation speed between the static and movement animations, too, to make it feel less inert.

  14. Some good parts, some bad parts and some in the middle. Can't say I'm 100% decided to put paper on it,apparently the city is very big and detailed but lacks character also the main story is weak but it has interesting side quests.

Thinking the same... crappy story, bad script, but he seemed very enthusiastic about the gameplay and missions. I'm in the good position that neither me nor my system can afford/run that game. So, later in 2 to 3 years, when we know for sure if it's playable for Thief-fans, I'll start thinking about a purchase.

  15. This is stunning, and I don't know what amazes me the most: effects, level design (that teleport to virtual reality!), hacking mini-game or GUI? Keep it up, You're becoming a legend!

BTW: in the fusion cannon video, You're Buldozer uses simple blue background, instead of green and sky. How You achieved that?

Thank you! And the background is simply an inverted, big blue box I set to "shining" - using that for screenshots, etc., because removing the green/sky part with Gimp takes too long.
