Why You Can’t Help Believing Everything You Read
Mattar_Tharkari replied to Mattar_Tharkari's topic in OFFTOPIC
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Milgram_experiment @ Lenyoga, Interesting info, although it is now considered unethical and partially flawed, it does add something to the understanding of the phenomenon. Of note are the differing results when applied to different societies. Looking at more modern studies - there is actually an OU course: The psychology of conspiracy theories http://www.open.edu/openlearn/body-mind/psychology/psychological-studies/the-psychology-conspiracy-theories Something to do with conformity and coercive persuasion perhaps? Does the belief in hoaxes and conspiracy theories spread like the proverbial social smoking habit? -

There were some others equally worrying (multiple summons for DUI!) but that one was stored away for perpetuity. Some of them should not be allowed anywhere near children. @mrcash - sound advice - ignored your bullshit. ;) But no, I wanted to discuss this as I am amazed at the hoaxes people fall for, year after year, after year. After all said hoaxes are exposed - they continue digging for the next hoax. Often on the very same conspiracy website. Why do they fall for / beleive everything they read? Search 'conspiracy theory' on this very website and you will see many familiar names going all the way back to the dawn of BI Forums on subjects such as "NASA accidentally nukes Jupiter" etc. -

Oh just concerned that certain people are re-posting hoaxes and the nonsense from infowars, beforeitsnews, globalresearch.ca, dailysheeple and rt.com and dubious blogs etc. without thinking about it or checking it first. For example, the New Year Fukushima hoax that caused some to start chugging iodine pills and cling filming their houses lol. -

Mattar_Tharkari replied to walker's topic in OFFTOPIC
@instagoat - NASA is actually investigating LENR but haven't found anything usefull for energy production. I'm awaiting the oil market crash he predicted for 2014 when LENR devices are available to buy. As it's now 2014 can we have a prediction of Q1,Q2,Q3 or Q4? -
As already explained to one of your fellow travellers (I was thinking of creating a "this is a joke" sign but what's the use if after explanations the meaning is still lost), the giant squid is a joke at your expense as this thread has degenerated into conspiracy theory, hoax and fear mongering and should probably be locked. It is well documented that the greatest effect on health due to incidents such as this is stress. Fear mongering and spreading hoaxes doesn't really help anyone. Huff Post has not reported that accurately? They focused on the 70% which grabs your attention. In fact the risk of thyroid cancer is slightly elevated for a small local population group by 0.50% (half a percent, half!!!!) from 0.75% to 1.25% - that is a 70% ish rise lol. So what actually happened is the risk of thyroid cancer increased 0.5% for local female residents exposed as infants. That risk is very small, minute, you are more likely to die in a traffic accident - there is a much higher risk from drinking alcohol. 19500 people died in the USA from alcohol related cancer in 2009 yet people keep on drinking. I would suggest that you would save more lives by posting risk info in the Boozer thread. You need to get a perspective on reality. The WHO also states that no birth defects were expected due to low exposures and so far has found none - Fukushima birth defects is another hoax from the funny pages. What isn't funny is that stress during pregnancy causes increased levels of cortisol and other stress hormones which cause more miscarriages and birth defects than radiation exposure. Evacuation and relocation to temporary housing is bad enough without the effects of reading all the various hoaxes floating around the web. http://www.who.int/ionizing_radiation/pub_meet/faqs_fukushima_risk_assessment/en/ Further perspective on reality: http://www.newscientist.com/article/dn20793-radioactive-fukushima-children-given-cancer-allclear.html#.Ut51__hFD0o UNSCEAR May 2013 - No Immediate Health Risks from Fukushima Nuclear Accident This is the most comprehensive international study to date. http://www.unis.unvienna.org/unis/en/pressrels/2013/unisinf475.html Where is the rt.com published retraction after spreading the New Year Fukushima steam explosion hoax? rt.com also fell for the steam hoax will report any conspiracy theory it finds in the funny pages? They may have fallen for another - Tepco hasn't made any such statement on Unit 2, it's something that only appears on the conspiracy theorist websites? I may be wrong, perhaps someone could provide a link to the Tepco statement if it exists? If it does exist I guess we will have to discuss beta radiation (what's a beta ray, anyway?), becquerels and containment all over again. More info on the steam explosion hoax you fell for, twice: Regarding Certain Overseas Reports on Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station http://www.tepco.co.jp/en/announcements/2014/1233524_5932.html I explained this well known water vapour mechanism back in August yet the hoax posts and fear mongering continue: http://forums.bistudio.com/showthread.php?116366-Post-Fukushima-Where-Now-for-Nuclear-Power&p=2460767&viewfull=1#post2460767

Thorium / LFTR Reactors - the cheaper and safer nuclear technology
Mattar_Tharkari replied to [aps]gnat's topic in OFFTOPIC
While it does look promising it's more than a little over hyped: The Guardian: Don't believe the spin on thorium being a greener nuclear option http://www.theguardian.com/environment/2011/jun/23/thorium-nuclear-uranium http://www.nnl.co.uk/media/27860/nnl__1314092891_thorium_cycle_position_paper.pdf Onr thing I notice is overlooked in all the supporting evidence in this thread is that thorium isn't a fissile material (it's fertile), it needs to be converted to U²³³ first before fission can occur. So when it is described as an alternative to uranium it isn't really. The theoretical work on how to do that within a molten salt is there but the actual proven technology doesn't actually exist yet. In previous working examples the thorium had to be 'kick started' with a neutron source to create U²³³. Other sobering details are mentioned in the NNL paper such as: cost, complex reprocessing and it isn't waste free either, it produces less waste. Despite claims, it is possible to extract the U²³³ to make nuclear weapons so the non proliferation argument doesn't stack up either. -

Perhaps some of them even fell for the same Fukushima hoax twice in less than 6 months? (even the anti-nuclear activists say the Unit 3 steam explosion thing is a hoax). They drink 'whine' on these forums don't they? I drink more wine, cava, prosecco and champaign than beer. Try a Pinot Noir - still the king of reds imho. I would also stick my neck out and say that a good quality prosecco is better than cava or champaign. I would also suggest going on a wine tour if visiting France or Italy, not just for the wine, the small vinyards also provide a fantastic meal or picnic as well.

Laser Designator System script for A143 Buzzard (CAS)
Mattar_Tharkari replied to Mattar_Tharkari's topic in ARMA 3 - MISSION EDITING & SCRIPTING
If you are using the respawn module there is a box there for running code on the respawned object? expression: xhandle = (_this select 0) execVM "designation\laserSetup.sqf"; untested but should work with the [newVehicle, oldVehicle] params that are passed? (todo - must update the script over Xmas) -

[] call BIS_fnc_PIP; Will remove the PIP - notice I put it in my script to remove any existing PIPs? Camera is blind to helper objects which is why I use red pencils in the script. If you need something larger use red gull cans ("Land_Can_V3_F")? -

I don't know much about dialogues but why not just have a live PIP view of the target? This will create a target at the distance in the direction the player is facing: nul = [50] execVM "target.sqf"; _dist = _this select 0; _tgtPos = player modelToWorld [0,_dist,0]; _tgt = createVehicle ["Target_F", _tgtPos, [], 0, "CAN_COLLIDE"]; _dir = [player,_tgt] call BIS_fnc_dirTo; _tgt setDir _dir; _tgt addEventHandler ["HitPart", {_mkr = "Land_PencilRed_F" createVehicle [0,0,0]; _mkr enableSimulation false; _mkr setPosASL (_this select 0 select 3);}]; _obj = createVehicle ["Sign_Sphere10cm_F", [0,0,0], [], 0, "CAN_COLLIDE"]; _obj setObjectTexture [0,"#(argb,8,8,3)color(0,0,0,0)"]; _obj setPos (_tgt modelToWorld [0,-0.5,1]); _camPos = ([0,0,0]); [] call BIS_fnc_PIP; sleep 1; _targ_pip = ["rendertarget0",[[_obj,_camPos],_tgt],_obj] call BIS_fnc_PIP; _targ_pip camCommit 0; //assistance to find the target - can be hard to spot in the terrain _wp = (group player) addWaypoint [_tgtPos, 0]; _wp setWaypointType "MOVE"; _arrow = createVehicle ["Sign_Arrow_Large_F", [0,0,0], [], 0, "CAN_COLLIDE"]; _arrow setPosATL [_tgtPos select 0,_tgtPos select 1, 2]; Picture of result: http://31.media.tumblr.com/9844365958a0765262034bb331da4235/tumblr_my973kkiY51sneir7o1_1280.jpg -

relative position from object (???)
Mattar_Tharkari replied to dragonsyr's topic in ARMA 3 - MISSION EDITING & SCRIPTING
ninja'd you are giving the function a peram it doesn't take - needs to be objects or positions not a direction scriptName "Functions\geometry\fn_relativeDirTo.sqf"; /************************************************************ Relative Direction To By Andrew Barron Parameters: [object 1, object or position 2] Returns the relative direction from object 1 to object/position 2. Return is always 0-360. A position to the right of unit would be at a relative direction of 90 degrees, for example. Example: [player, getpos dude] call BIS_fnc_relativeDirTo ************************************************************/ private "_dir"; _dir = _this call BIS_fnc_dirTo; //get direction to target _dir = _dir - (getdir (_this select 0)); //subtract direction of unit //ensure return is between 0-360 if (_dir < 0) then {_dir = _dir + 360}; if (_dir > 360) then {_dir = _dir - 360}; _dir -

if (_playerPos < 180) then {hint "you are right of the object";} else {hint "you are left of the object";}; BIS_fnc_relativeDirTo returns 0 - 360 so thats all you need I think? -

The config already exists ingame - did you add it twice? All you need is the animation code in Tonic's first code block. UPDATE - no it's no longer working - doors, flir and screen no longer work. I will have a look at the config and see whats changed. Just compared todays config with one I generated in October - the correct lines still seem to be there in class Heli_Light_01_base_F : Helicopter_Base_H but I'm no expert on configs. Someone mentioned somewhere that animated doors are a WIP and that some things have been temporarily removed - maybe they will return next year??? -

How Did You Learn To Script?
Mattar_Tharkari replied to infiltrator_2k's topic in ARMA 3 - MISSION EDITING & SCRIPTING
The main chore with scripting is the testing and working out why things don't work as they should/ at all. The main thing you need is a test template mission setup with a player, AI, a few vehicles, triggers, markers, lots and lots of traffic cones, init.sqf, description.ext, blank .sqf files with handy bits of code for debugging already in them eg: //hint str //diag_log //player sidechat str //onMapSingleClick "player SetPos _pos; true;"; Every time you need to test a new idea you can copy the contents of your template folder into the mission folder, it saves hours of time setting up new missions and testing. You can also have a basic function library too, setup ready to go. -

:D NSA infiltrated online games: "massive multi-player online video games have been targeted for years". http://news.yahoo.com/nsa-infiltrated-online-games-39-world-spycraft-39-170707393.html Just saw this on the news whilst getting a snack to cure the munchies, nearly sprayed my left over pasta all over the TV! Well, well well! This explains a lot! I bet one of the pretend loud mouths in this thread is our spy? Bad mouthing the NSA and GCHQ in order to recruit recruits eh??? Come on - own up - which one of you is it? You can tell me now, or I got ways of finding out myself! (<--- serious business!, avatar has changed) -
(Did read it actually - his theory is based on the flawed belief that the US Government could not have known what they knew at the time of the attack when in reality neither Hersh or his source is likely to have the full intelligence picture. He ignores the fact that the weapons involved have been used before, there have been previous chemical attacks and he seems to think the sole source of intel are some ground based 'sensors'. It's likely the US were 90% sure who did it and the purity of the Sarin (independent testing by the UN) confirmed it.) Seymour Hersh's claims are nothing more than gossip, mostly from a single source who may or may not be 'real'. 90% of his recent work is based on anonymous sources and he has been widely criticised for it. To verify what he says is true you would have to have access to all the intel that the US president saw. Are you 100% sure that the anonymous source or Hersh knows what took place at that level, I doubt it? Hersh's criticisms could easily be turned 180 back at himself, how can he or his source verify their story? Regarding some of the claims about chemical weapons and rockets - it's easy to verify what he says isn't true - both from UNMOVIC documents and everyday physics. I'll give you an example - his anonymous 'expert' claims that the rockets only have a range of 2km. 2km eh? Strange that there are web pages and videos showing HE versions of the 330mm rocket travelling around 2km, someone has even helpfully drawn a red line on a map to illustrate it. I'm sure it's just a coincidence that his expert quotes the same values the video bloggers do..... Anyway - the science bit: TNT (a solid) has a density of 1.65g/cm³, the precursor agents of Sarin have much lower densities (both volatile liquids) of 1.3314 g/cm³ (20 °C) and 0.786 g/cm3 (20 °C). What does this tell us? The payloads differ in mass don't they? If you take the volume of the payloads as 56l, accept the widely held value of 2km, precursers are mixed 50/50 according to the equation so it means the chemical payload is roughly 2/3 the mass of the HE payload. So it's reasonable to assume that the chemical rocket has a much longer range than the HE rocket as they use the same rocket components. Now if the expert had given a range of between 2km and xkm I might have found something plausible there. Yet the lower range is given, so what kind of expert is this? Many of Hersh's claims don't add up and are contradicted by UNMOVIC. The 140mm rocket used in the attack is a standard weapon and has a range of ~9.8km, which is conveniently forgotten. Sorry to 'go on' but I thought you would have noticed this yourself? If he gets so much of the technical detail wrong, what makes you think the 'gossip' from his anonymous source is 100% true?
-
Seymour Hersh? Lets hope he doesn't have as many imaginary friends as anonymous sources ROFL. http://www.un.org/disarmament/content/slideshow/Secretary_General_Report_of_CW_Investigation.pdf http://www.nytimes.com/2013/09/17/world/europe/syria-united-nations.html?pagewanted=1&_r=0 UNMOVIC document detailing chemical weapons use and storage in Iraq (shows you what Hersh says about storage and use is nonsense, note the problems with production and purity). http://www.un.org/depts/unmovic/new/documents/technical_documents/s-2006-701-munitions.pdf I said as much back in August before the UN report was even published in response to a similar ill-informed assertion by Dwarden......... http://forums.bistudio.com/showthread.php?135597-Syria-What-should-we-do-if-anything&p=2482883&viewfull=1#post2482883 We even had the video of Government forces firing the 330mm rocket detailed in the UN report - rebels don't have it. Also Herch states it has a maximum range of 2km when that is obviously not true for either of the types of rocket the UN recovered. http://forums.bistudio.com/showthread.php?135597-Syria-What-should-we-do-if-anything&p=2484812&viewfull=1#post2484812
