    Altis - Info & Discussion

Yea, view distance above 10k does freeze your pc for quite some time until youve turned 360 degrees and it has loaded everything around you. What also needs to be fixed is the "camera" getting stuck as soon as you open the map. When youre onboard a chopper on the way to your objective and look at the map to get a decent overview of the area around the LZ, the game needs to reload all the objects and textures around you as soon as you close the map. Kinda sucks on Altis with that much stuff to load.

    Altis - Info & Discussion

Played a lot of Invade & Annex today and i just love Altis. The variety is just awesome. Every corner of the map has its own feeling, look- and strategy wise. MP Performance is another thing though. Invade & Annex is of course a pretty heavy map for servers with like 60 players and probably around 100-150 AI spawned at peak, but i just don't understand how the client FPS is still so much bound to the server FPS. In Kavala i got like 20 FPS max with viewdistance and object draw distance both turned down to 1km, and i'd call my machine upper midrange. In the editor i get like solid 60 with 5km viewdistance, maybe 45-50 in Kavala. There is probably still some optimization that can be done both by BIS and the mission editors, but the MP experience is leaving me with the impression that this game is either ahead of its time regarding hardware usage, or the engine is just not capable of delivering a propper gameplay experience on a map the size of Altis. Dont get me wrong, i love this game and i don't want it to be dumbed down or have smalle maps, but BIS should seriously invest some time into the core engine and MP code for either Arma IV or possible addons. If a propper gameplay experience can only be delivered by placing few units on a very small area of the map, it feels like you're playing 30 smaller maps in rotation, there is no real sense of big scale war.
  3. Just played it. Good fun, a little on the easy side maybe with all those friendlies. The voiceovers are well done, gives it a polished feeling. The mission itself felt kinda basic (classic town sweep), but 6 hours after Altis release i can totally live with it. Good way to introduce you to the feeling that is Altis urban combat.

    Altis - Info & Discussion

First impressions after touring for 2 hours: Stunning, absolutely stunning. The attention to detail is out of this world. The whole feeling of a mediteranean island is totally there (comparing it to the 2 mediteranean islands ive actually been to: Gran Canaria and Mallorca) Performance wise i think it's as to be expected. Average numbers of objects on the screen must've quadrupled from Stratis. The CPU usage is kinda crazy though. Placing yourself in the editor and taking a drive around uses 85/40/60/40 percent on the cores of my i5-2500k overclocked to 4.4ghz. GPU Usage goes down the more viewdistance i use. On 12k ive got 25FPS with my GPU usage only being at around 50%. Turning it down to 5k brings the GPU usage up to around 80-90% (Using a 7850 overclocked to 1100mhz). So all in all the CPU is still extremely important if you want propper performance. Sometimes my SSD doesnt seem to be able to keep up with loading all the textures, especially on 10k viewdistance+. The game keeps freezing for a second or so until youve turned 360° and the game has loaded all the textures and the terrain, so for me, even with an ssd i just can't get playable performance above 10k viewdistance. In reality i won't use more than 3k anyways though, but damn does Stratis look beautiful with 12k.

    Altis - Info & Discussion

The update will be 2.5gb+, upload is in progress. Source: Twitter @jaycroweuk That Dl is gonna take a while for me, oh well. The first thing i'll do is just place a jeep at the coast and take a road trip around the island.
  6. Would be cool if the whole mission would be a bit more dynamic territory gaining wise when Altis hits. Right now the gameplay is really cool with all the chaos around you, but capturing bases and especially befriending towns isn't all that exciting and "only" feels like something you'll do to complete the mission and get a better score. A dynamic mission system based around the bases would be sweet. For example your bases get attacked from time to time, but the way that happens will be different each time. One mission type could be a vehicle convoy heading for one of your bases. You will then of course have many different options to handle that. You could set up a trap with mines before the convoy reaches the destination, call in CAS to take them out (costing lots of money and requiring you to have conquered a base that gives you CAS) or just head to your base and use the time to set up some defenses using money on static defenses or fortification. Other defense missions could include air attacks on your bases or artillery firing with infantry moving in afterwards. Maybe the mission type and support that you are able to call in could even be based on enemy/friendly bases next to the one being attacked. So those defensive missions could happen each 30 minutes for example. The rest of the time could be used for "territorial" gains by taking bases. Would be also nice if the bases would give you advantages based very much on their layout, so that you can't buy tanks/jets/helicopters in bases that have very light defenses and some small buildings. Bigger military areas give you access to tanks, but are much more difficult to take with the Altis Airfield being the most difficult one because it gives you access to pretty much everything availible in the game. All in all that would make money and defense management/territorial gains much more interesting and you'd have to think a bit more strategical instead of just driving your tank from base to base. Just some ideas i had in mind :)

    Will performance drop on Atis,

Performance in Arma depends heavily on the number of objects on the screen and the number of AI's simulated by your PC. Both numbers will probably increase on average, as the towns on Altis are bigger (more buildings and stuff), and the map might just need more AI's simulated to actually make it populated propperly to simulate an immersive war scenario. So if you place yourself on an empty map in the middle of nowhere on Altis you will probably not experience any worse performance than in the middle of nowhere on Stratis. If you place yourself in say Agia marina and compare that performance to placing yourself in one of the significantly bigger towns on Altis, then yes, the performance will be worse.
  8. Altis coming to the dev branch next monday. Source: SITREP #00022 (Just out)
  9. Finally completed it, 2,5 hours, rating: 34220. Left out a lot of side missions and had to save/load quite a lot. Those pesky mi48's when youre in a vehicle, death comes so quickly without you even noticing ;)
  10. 99% sure. I had stopped before, like 300m down the road. Was there for like 5 minutes killing some enemies in the hills and my squad was out as well, no problems there. I have no idea what happened during those 300m, i didnt see anyone.
  11. Love this mission. You just never know what youre getting yourself into with all that chaos around you. Played a couple of rounds earlier, and in my last game i suddenly had EVERYTHING attacking me. Was on my way to the airstation with my squad in a truck, got out and all of them just shot me down. Tried loading the savegame again, same thing. When i got away in the truck and made it back to lz connor... same situation, everything was hostile. Had invested like 1 hour into the game and everything worked perfectly well up to that point, kinda weird. Great work anyways. This mission is will be EPIC on Altis, no doubt.

Arma 3 - Sneak Preview Livestream

All i can say so far is... Altis looks AMAZING. It's gonna take ages to see it all. Great job!
  13. Them not waiting until at least the first part of the campaign is done still feels a little weird to me. Why don't they just continue to gradually release content for the beta, like jets, tanks or altis until then? I'm not concerned at all about the value of the game for me, because i know it will be worth the money i spent on it. But reviews are probably gonna be full of "Not sure if we can recommend the game in its current state" and that may turn off new players which would usually populate servers and make the game more enjoyable for us by just having more servers to play on. Let's face it, even with Steam Workshop there will be players who are either too lazy to look for user generated content or are just not willing to do so. Gameplay wise the game is definately in a state where it can be released, no doubt about that. I just hope they know what they're doing regarding sales numbers.

    FPS Issues

"Very low" is just the name of the preset... you can't compare arma 3 presets directly to arma 2 presets as the required specs are higher. I'd suggest you stop using presets altogether and just manually turn down everything to the lowest setting. If that doesn't give you playable FPS i guess it's bad luck and time to upgrade your system. 23FPS in Arma 2 when playing online indicates that your system must be very old and probably not suited very well for gaming at all. The Arma 3 engine is just more demanding and BIS can't change anything about it. If you turn down everything to lowest the terrain and models will still have more polygons than the ones in arma 2.

Great to hear from you Benny =) And guys, i think with the AI rewrite Benny definately meant the Arma 2 Version, as ammo/refuel/repair support options don't really exist in Arma 3 yet. So don't worry, it seems like we will get exactly what we've been waiting for pretty soon :) Also it will probably be beneficial if Benny lays foundations for an Arma 3 Version early on, as that will only speed up development of an Altis Version as soon as the full game is out. The only thing that worries me is that playing with/against AI might be dead in Arma 3. The AI is still single threaded and there have not been any kind of bigger improvements to the dedicated server (yet), like say 8 core support. I don't see how any CPU on the market right now could manage Altis Warfare with an adequate number of AIs. Anyways, can't wait for the new version!

    Make bf4.5

As much as i loved CE, BF, BF2, BFV, all i can say is: No. Arma is supposed to play like this, and that's a good thing. Controls are sometimes a tad too complicated (Too much things hidden in menus) but the gameplay is 100% fine. If this game was as arcady as BF1942 it would lose all of its atmosphere and with it most of the fun. Nobody would have developed ACE, Acre, DayZ, JSRS and all the other mods that define what the gameplay experience of Arma 2 is today if it wasn't a comparably serious game. If you're just looking for your hilarous moments in a game, you'll find them in Arma as well, no doubt.

Does arma 3 use 4 cores?

As i said, it has been like that since Arma 2, and as the core AI has not been rewritten (BIS has mentioned this before, a while ago, can't give you a source right now though) it is still the same thing in Arma 3. And no about that second part. Operating systems are pretty great when it comes to load balancing. So if there is capacity availible on the core that runs the AI, it might run other threads of the game. As soon as the AI thread takes up 100% of a single core though, all other threads will be moved to whatever other cores you have availible if possible. That happens in the background without you even noticing. Now Arma 3 definately uses more CPU than Arma 2 by default, so that's why you'll see an increased usage over Arma 2. I'm pretty sure the AI uses more as well, i can't say that for sure though. BIS might still be able to tweak that for the final version, but the singlethread AI bottleneck remains.

Does arma 3 use 4 cores?

The problem is - and has always been the AI not being multithreaded. Arma can use all the cores it wants, as long as the performance-bottleneck (AI) is single-threaded, 4,8 or 16 cores won't help your performance even a little bit as soon as the core the AI got assigned to hits 100%. All that matters for Scenarios with massive amounts of AI is pure single-threaded performance of your CPU. People have been complaining about this since very early in Arma 2, yet Arma 3 has not changed anything about it. All we can do right now is pray that BIS finally sees the light and "fixes" this. Don't get your hopes too high though, as a beta version usually means no more core engine rewrites. Unfortunately making the AI use multiple threads instead of just one requires much more than just flipping a "use multicore" switch.

    Warfare BE

Personally i hope Benny focuses on finishing the AI rewrite for Arma 2 first, because it's really needed and also because Arma 3 is a Beta after all. Ive seen enough of Stratis and went back to playing Arma 2 for the variety and the (yet) unmatched performance compared to Arma 3. Arma 3 is the future, no doubt, but right now i don't see many reasons to replace A2 with A3 except for prettier graphics. Oh well, it's his decision in the end ;)
  20. Yes, that solved the issue for me as well, thanks Tupolov. Maybe someone should create a ticket for this?
  21. I'm having the same problem. I never tried creating a dedicated in the Alpha, so im not sure whether its a problem with the dev. branch beta right now. All i know is that I just cannot join my own dedicated running on the same machine as my client, no matter what configuration method i use. I tried TA2DST and i tried creating some config files manually. Whenever i try to join the server, all i get is the background image and nothing happens. Pressing escape will take me back to the MP Lobby and that is as far as i can get. Turning off the firewall doesn't help either. The server window doesn't indicate that any client is joining while i'm stuck on the background image.
