The problem with ai for Arma 3 is they have to live upto modded ai from both arma & arma2. With modded ai in A2 we had the choice of pretty good all round ai, they weren’t perfect but they were very good, what I would like to see in BIS ai: Well the basics we need are for them to have an awareness of their surroundings, this will lead onto heightened reactions when they are engaged. Ten things below that make the ai better, not perfect, but better. If BIS ai could be this standard to start with, then the growth from that would be pretty impressive: A foreword, all of these are simple tests, most very short some longer. Many are really low quality recordings (some quite old), full screen on some is fine (720hd), others need just 200% browser screen to see what’s going on, well you will see what I mean.. 1/ Reaction to sound of fire ‘unseen’ To react to firing ‘unseen’ is one thing, to search out and deal with the threat is another. 2/ Reaction to smoke 3/ Reaction to incoming fire plus evasive counter actions 4/ Find cover wherever possible, but preferably hard cover http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kH-urIkuLdY&list=PLj7LIw2iwG-HBxjqFG4Y32YHKRMkz2AF-&index=42 5/ Movement from cover to cover, the ability to break formation when ordered to and move sensibly through an area http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wMiRCWs32QY&list=PLj7LIw2iwG-HBxjqFG4Y32YHKRMkz2AF-&index=54 6/ Quick/fast reactions from fire, seek the threat out quickly within a close area. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iJu6Mi02JQA&list=PLj7LIw2iwG-HBxjqFG4Y32YHKRMkz2AF-&index=17 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TXtY7C-QIdI 7/ Finding somewhere to position themselves, a good position, not just rush in, use caution. Then defend that position if need be, in this case a building. 8/ Talking of buildings, to use them and also to engage from them http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AMcZfEr1y-M&list=PLj7LIw2iwG-HBxjqFG4Y32YHKRMkz2AF-&index=68 9/ Using buildings & position to see out (I have so many examples of this, just picked one out the hat) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OxRJRD19l5I&list=PLj7LIw2iwG-HBxjqFG4Y32YHKRMkz2AF-&index=58 10/ The ability to surprise, they also throw grenades, may try to escape if captured, play dead until you've gone etc. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ktZc_6sOlEo&list=PLj7LIw2iwG-HBxjqFG4Y32YHKRMkz2AF-&index=55 Most of the reactions above are configurable, as to what extent they may use these abilities.

Programming your Razer Nostromo for ArmA
chrisb replied to AbortedMan's topic in ARMA 3 - BETA DISCUSSION
I hadn’t seen the Orbweaver, it looks a step up from the Nostromo probably just for the fact it has, a forth row of buttons, the rest is pretty similar. The design of the Orbweaver is more sleek which looks really good. I may well upgrade to this, now I have seen it, I quite like the look of it. Not sure however if that forth row of buttons maybe awkward to use. On the Nostromo you can alter the palm rest but not the thumb fitting, but thats more or less where you want it anyway for a normal sized hand. Oh and no, the thumb stick is not analogue, which is a shame really. -

1-5 FPS with max visibilty 12x12 km on plain water
chrisb replied to NeuroFunker's topic in ARMA 3 - TROUBLESHOOTING
Thats great to see screenshots, so much better I think, especially when shown for a purpose, helps others that might have that system. There are soo many on here that will say "I get this" or "I get that" with their settings at this or that, but never ever show a screenshot, so someone else with that same system that can't get the same performance starts worrying. Any screenshots I put up tend to have fps counter, far better. The A3 album I have in my sig has lots of pics with fps counter included, its as a guide for those with a similar system. Showing the performance monitors as well is even better, I used to do that in A2, when talking about performance. Anyway; The terrain detail is a very odd thing, the complete opposite to mine, I have it set at Standard, if I put it any higher it eats my fps, and I mean really eats it. Set lower and I get massive gains in fps. For the rest in that tab concerning those below.. Tex = Ultra Objects = Ultra Terrain = Standard Cloud = Ultra Shadow = Standard Particles = Very High I reciprocated with a couple of screenies.. Airfield Driving :) -
what do you call this shimmering effect?
chrisb replied to Leon86's topic in ARMA 3 - TROUBLESHOOTING
Skyrim on this forum, got to smile at that..:D -
With GamesBooster it switches off background processes, this is a reason why soo many have major problems with fps. That’s probably why he saw an increase in performance, had too many processes running in the background unchecked. _______ The idea of good gaming is to use, if pos a gaming pc, then keep it lean & clean. If your using a pc that is also used for everyday things, then you have to be even more keen on maintaining your pc, defrag, registry clean, shut down processes that are not needed while your gaming, turn the pc settings down and the power up, etc. Players get online then wonder, why’s it not running well, they forget the other dozen programs or so that are trying to update at the same time in the background, just turn them off.. Concerning the amd cat 13.2, I stopped at 12.1 a while back, it gave great performance, so I saw no reason to jeopardise that, still giving great performance.;)

chrisb replied to NeuroFunker's topic in ARMA 3 - TROUBLESHOOTING
@nicolasroger, yes, and some screenshots with fps counter, I use msi afterburner, no real performance hit, only when recording. @charliemilk , I think you could be right, sounds plausible, fps does reduce a little looking out to see whereas it was the opposite in A2. :) -
Stuttering and bad performance with latest Dev Build Editions, Testing Thread
chrisb replied to Tonci87's topic in ARMA 3 - BETA DISCUSSION
I only get the fps loss on that type of ground, the stutter that goes with it is hardly noticeable, but it is there. I will stick with it until the next change, for me, its really not that bad and I’m sure it will get fixed, either by chance or worked through, whichever. I am not playing missions as such in A3, just testing scenarios and waiting for it to improve in certain aspects. At the moment it’s a playground, with time and the work they are still yet to do, it will replace A2 for mission making, probably.;). -
Programming your Razer Nostromo for ArmA
chrisb replied to AbortedMan's topic in ARMA 3 - BETA DISCUSSION
I received a pm from Colin too, saw an old post where I mentioned I had a Nos.. I am in the middle of sorting the best setup for A3, still working it out. For A2 I had the first keymap for general movement, zoom, hit the ground quick, weapon down, step over, lean, deploy weapon (although not using ace now so that will have to change) etc Second keymap was a snipers config, many of the keys from the first keymap I repeated, but with some keys changed specifically for sniper, as in wind/drop/elevation etc alterations (again ace so rethink needed). Walk, freelook, change scope, reload, mirrors etc are bound to my mouse. Between the two I rarely touch my keyboard.. The best idea would be to know what you want on your Nos, general movement is quite easy to setup. When I first got mine, while back now, I spent a long time sorting through setups, it can be a bit daunting as there is so much you can do with it. But generally, anything to do with movement that is used constantly, should be bound to your Nos keymap 1 & your mouse, then say sniper mode on the next keymap and so on. I have keymap 3 for commanding units, but I’m going to change that too. I have just bought a TIR5 so this is going to mean changing again certain buttons, so again, once I get sorted I will add my config below @abortedman’s here. He has put on a pretty comprehensive guide for you, for the first keymap, mines different to that in some respects but others are the same, I can see what he's going for there. I would try that above (@abortedman) as a straight copy to begin with, you will probably find over time you change keys here and there but its a first step into Nostromo use. Once your used to keymap 1 setup 2 and so on, only take a day or so to get used to using it. Never look back once you start using one of these, best used with a configurable mouse too.. -
Rye is right regards the wall of text, but understand that when you get going, trying to list whats going on, you can get carried away. Good tests though, just highlights how little ai have come on, they really did leave it to the mod makers to sort out. Most of the ones I would like to see in A3 are made by people who have left the community I think. So there lies our problem as a group, ai in A3 at the moment are really bad, its going to be like that for a while I think. I have had ai go and search, well check, buildings in A3 whilst just standing around. Problem is running it on from that. I have yet to try more tests, still making missions for A2, for the group. A3 in its present form is unplayable for our group, would just be annoying, but we can hope. A couple of the group are looking at the mod’s we used in our mixes for A2, they are pretty good when it comes to that sort of thing. Arma 3 is good for looking around, for really good missions though with believable ai, well, may just end up a tourist resort...:butbut:

Screenshots gentlemen (with fps counters), then we can see the fps levels and differences, performance at a glance..;) I change my settings almost daily, its down to the weather I set for testing scenarios. One set of settings does not do all, unfortunately, yet anyway..

I'm not wadding into this argument, its going nowhere anyway, but. There maybe a time that comes whereby content used from other sources are forbidden by BIS, preferring to stay with steam/workshop for all the game content and addons. I use Armaholic a lot for downloading mod/addons, it’s ‘the place’ to do this really. But the worry is, where Arma 3 is concerned, that the corner has already been turned and its just a matter of time before we see the new road ahead. I’ve read the steam legal agreements, it does give them a right over the mod/addon makers work, its there on the page, no doubting that. If or whether they would use that right is yet to be seen. I would love BIS to hassle steam/valve for better definition of mod makers rights concerning their work. But it probably will never happen, BIS to steam are a small dev company, steam won’t worry if BIS left steam behind, but BIS would worry if steam left BIS behind. There’s going to be anger and resentment, the series has joined the mainstream, that won’t change now, business wise for BIS it would be silly to withdraw or turn their back on the sales opportunities. What steam has in the way of legal agreements, licences etc, will be the norm from here on with this series, that will be something some will have to just face. Not just mod/addon makers but players, clans, communities as well. Its changed, nothing any of us do, will change that.. Is it sad.. No, not really, its just a different way..

TrackIR for Arma 3, some questions for existing users.
chrisb replied to chrisb's topic in ARMA 3 - GENERAL
Well the TIR5 arrived today, only ordered it Thursday, so that is fantastic, would definately recommend the place I bought them, I worked out around Tuesday for delivery. Anyway, so I have set them up initially and they work fine. Now the leaning around corners, rolling your head to one side does it a little but how do you make it more of a lean ? I don't want to be leaning my body really, rather have the lean attached to the head roll for infantry use. Haven’t found how you alter that yet. Any help would be appreciated.. Well worth the money though, should be a good addition to my game-play.. -
Our group is working on that now, could be problematic here and there, especially with the older ai mods..

A mix of mods, not just GL4, but SLX, Zues, Tpwc will produce decent behaviour. Here’s a test done a while back, just two factions set to run at each others starting point. Would be a senseless little scenario if it wern't for the mix of mods included. Cover is provided in the form of two small settlements, set over to the side of each group 40+ mtrs away from the main run area that the ai will take, no other cover is on the map. What would happen in every scenario without this mix of mods. They would see each other, then at best, drop to the ground and move forward using WW1 tactics, shoot, raise a little, move forward, shoot, repeat until dead, thats not what I or my group wants to see, its pointless behaviour, could do that behaviour on a board with dice (infact used to a few decades ago). This is an extreme test, no options to hide behaviour, thats the point, we want to see the behaviour, how the parts of the mods interact. Improvements have been made since this test to our groups ai behaviour. But we're in A3 now, these mods are lost (well perhaps), so we have to want/hope for better. Its new ai we have here in A3, buts its not really, its ai from a long time ago, just made more accurate to hide bad behaviour, the ai behaviour our group had in A2 was about as good as we were going to find. But if we are to move onto A3, well, what to do.. Anyway; The test here shows some of what these mods can do when mixed. Gl4 is for cohesive group work, backup, flanking, well, too much to list here. SLX adds a little in terms of awareness, some decision making, stances, movement awareness, plus other behaviour. Zeus adds more ai skill (thinking), self preservation etc, tpwc helps with some of the suppression, plus stances. Combine them, or parts of them, to get a reasonably sensible ai.. Work your configs well to oblige each of the mod parts, then make missions that are really put together well. Do all that and you have a game completely different to A2 and now A3, in A2 we could change that in A3 we're stuck, at present.. But if BIS put anyone of these into A3 in singluar form, ai would improve, if they mixed them, the same as our group has, then I would be really happy.. The old argument is, well it breaks missions (GL4), well yes, but it doesn't break missions made with the format of GL4. Our group missions are far beyond what you see in the standard Arma game-play, there not huge missions, campaigns are broken down into parts, but they feel, look and are, far more realistic to game-play, than anything I've seen anywhere concerning the series.. Must add I don't play missions in third person, just for tests. First person all the way for realism..

I think your 5450 is struggling with the new res. Reducing the res in-game, should help, but you say it doesn’t. What in-game settings do you have the game running on (video settings) ?..

There would be some drawbacks to using this, mainly I won’t be able to see my mug of tea. But there again there could be some plus points, my wife makes lousy tea.. I will look at it for sure when it becomes available, the Rift, not the tea..
