AI can and do, throw grenades back or away from themselves if they have the chance to, that’s courtesy of SLX (shot effects pbo). Only in A2 however, at the moment anyway.;) -

In A2 the CQB was really good, provided the AI were modded. They were pretty intuitive and engaged correctly from inside buildings, using correct stances, plus using windows, doorways, rooftops, balconies etc. Of course the movement was not as smooth as A3, but with SMK, ST Movement etc it was good enough. The tactics and game-play gained from a well modded AI, gives far greater realism and game immersion, that too was a joy in A2 and still is. Zorilla script works o.k. in A3, replaces the need for that part of GL4, maybe even took from that, not sure, anyway it works well, puts the AI inside buildings better than the stock AI system. Also GL4 works to a point in A3, but it really isn’t going to be an answer for the future for AI. Moving through town/villages (inc buildings) is what I’m testing at the moment with modded A3, trying to find more depth to the game, more along the lines of my A2 game-play. I have done 16 solid hrs testing AI in A3 yesterday, gruelling but worth it, need to find a reason why I bought my new pc, A3 runs fine on my old one, but if I can get AI working really hard (cpu), it may need my new pc after all, always hoping.:) -
A2 is o.k. graphics wise, but nothing like A3. However, if its a really realistic game your after, then A2 beats A3, though it needs to be modded (see sig). I would say its well worth getting A2CO (combined arms version). There is a huge and I mean huge, amount of content available for A2.:)
-
Not familiar with that graphic setup, so its integrated graphics. Usually integrated are limited where 'heavy' games are concerned, not sure with yours, maybe someone will have experience with it, sorry.:)

I am staying with A2 for now. However I have been testing a new AI mod for A2/3 (not mine). The tests in A3 have been making a big difference to AI, really improving their movement skills, cover finding, correct use of stances, leaning from cover, all tactical decisions, team work & communication between separate teams also general technic etc. AI is my biggest concern, it has to be really good, the AI mix I use in A2 is great, but it won't cross over to A3, so that's my worry at the moment, poor AI in A3, but it seems there may be a solution (fingers crossed). The medical side will be done via a mod/addon I feel sure, so I'm not too worried there, hate the super human self heal thing. A2 is the better game at the moment for me, can't see it changing soon, but you never know. I am very much against A3 going down the mainstream route, but if it can be brought back to the more realistic side, via mod/addons, similar to modded A2, then I may look again at it. Only really thinking this now, having done a solid 16hrs AI testing in A3 with this new mod over the last day or two, turned out really well.:D

Communities have been doing just that for many years with this series and others. With campaigns lasting much longer than a few weeks or months, years can be the case for some war-gaming communities (ongoing campaigns), ours certainly was, led on from SL/ASL (pc/board, create a, modern war gaming world, modded). We moved from that onto Arma (1), having messed around with OFP, but not very much. __ But to have a realistic immersive game, you need basics that perpetuate that realism/immersion, things your ongoing campaign world is built on, or even your short mission/scenario. We have become blasé regards the game-play we have in A2, great AI, our own well put together missions/scenarios/campaigns etc, which all keeps our game world ticking over, we took for granted the extent A2 and its vast content provided everything we needed. When you line A3 alongside A2 its unfair, we know, A2 has a big advantage, a few years of nurture, plus lots of content, ‘& I mean, lots of content’…. But when you look at A3, it’s the basics that seem to be missing, its biased towards faster, easier game-play (mainstream). I have no problem at all with that, its disappointing that A3 has gone down a different path, but that’s life, I was expecting it But you have to expect players to express their disappointment. For me A2 gave, and still is giving everything I need, so I was and still am, very happy, it could not go much further to please. Obviously it would have been nice to have things in A3, that were needed as mod/addons in A2, put into the game as stock, but they weren’t, in-fact it feels like the opposite, but never mind we still have them in A2. I would also have liked the lighting and graphics of A3, but really, its all about the game-play for me, so those type of things don't bother me too much. But for some who didn’t find that great game-play they perhaps wanted, they looked to A3 to provide it. So now A3 is going down a mainstream type route, its upsetting for them, just human nature. I would say, stick with A2, for those that can’t find what they’re looking for in A3. A2 has everything needed for realistic and totally immersive game-play, if you look for it. Provided you make good quality campaigns/missions/scenarios, its all there, obviously it has to be heavily modded, but that's fine. A really well modded A2 will not be matched for that style of realistic, immersive game-play, I firmly believe that. I also believe A3 is the last, no point for A4, unless its completely a different game/engine etc. They have taken the series into the future, that’s where I think they may leave it. What can they add, nothing really, they can just look to a healthier profit margin, which is what they have done, you just can’t blame them for that. Game series run a course, some you just have to leave when they are at they’re best. BIS should have left A2 as the final instalment in the series (imo) and called A3, something else, always best to go out on top form, A2 was and still is top form. In no way am I saying Arma 3 is a bad game, its not, but its of a different type now, for those that want a little more realistic game-play than say BF3 offers, then A3 sits nicely. :) Just imo.

Fully agree with Domokun. Arma 2 is simply better, so I’m really glad your progressing this along and staying with Arma2. Great news.:) -
So Arma 3 is out now, does it set the standard for future releases in the series?
chrisb replied to pd3's topic in ARMA 3 - GENERAL
They haven’t sold out, they simply moved towards a mainstream market, and yes, I would think this would be the pattern of things to come, if they make an A4. However, A2 feels far more realistic when compared to A3, just my opinion. A3 is a game (semi mainstream, if you like, they sort of landed half way), BIS answer to BF3 or indeed 4, well sort of. Whereas A2 is a crossover game/milsim, without being a training tool, I also have VBS2 to compare. Now, modded A2 is unbeatable I think, can’t be touched by anything, I expect it may never be. It’s the last of the series in that particular vain, that’s what I believe anyway. I am sticking to A2, for that realism, feel and enjoyment. A3 looks and moves better, no doubt, just its too gamey, a sort of sophisticated larger scale shoot-em-up. This is just imho. -
OP, if its realism you want, stick with Arma 2..;) That's modded A2 of course..

Agree, its great news, thanks.:)

Great to see this terrain, thanks for sharing it. Also thanks to foxhound for having it on armaholic. :) -
My AI always get alarmed by dead bodies, also raise alarm and call other units, courtesy of GL4, but that's in A2, not tried it in A3..;)

"Opening up Arma 3 to paid user-made content" - How?
chrisb replied to gammadust's topic in ARMA 3 - GENERAL
Its naïve to think BIS would simply keep buying work from mod makers and not pass that cost along to the player, just isn’t going to work that way. Ultimately if this is the way BIS intend to go (and why not plant the seed;)), the cost will be passed along and the player will have to pay for certain mod/addons if BIS deems fit to pass the quality of those mod/addons. Of course that would be the players choice to buy the mod/addon or not. I would be willing to pay for these extras if needed, it maybe be a way forward with the Steam issue etc. What surprises me is, I knew/thought the game (A3) was heading in a different direction and indeed, for me, it has, but the whole concept of the series might be going that way to. Certainly it makes sense to bring your business more in-line with the trend perhaps, that’s get the players to pay for quality things that addon to your game, no problem with that from a business point of view or indeed a players point of view either. But, I would have thought it better to perhaps simply state ‘we want to bring the business more in-line with mainstream gaming’ and have done with it. We know that other game devs charge for extras, its not a ‘wrong’ thing to do, but just say, it would put the community more at ease with this new direction. Mod makers could perhaps talk to BIS discuss, plan or whatever. This community has possibly some of the best mod/addon makers out there, doing it for free, why not build the series and change its direction a little, it could hammer some other games into the ground, just needs grabbing by the b***’s and doing. Regards mod/addons: If its great, expect to pay for it. If its good, why not donate. If you don't like it, don't have it. None of this is hard to understand, just needs clarifying a little, only BIS can do that, its their game after all. Just my point of view.:) Note: Iron Front, could have been great, it was as a game, but the growth potential that was thrown away, was a sin. I know it was not directly a BIS thing, but.. Dayz! wise to take that under wing and progress it. There are; mutants, aliens, zombies, ww2, ww1, new worlds, etc, etc all out there being worked on for this game format. Why not develop the great parts. The players, old and new, love the openness of the game playing experience, why not gain from that more. -
The glimpse I have seen of this mod plus the video & pics there, its all very exciting. I hope all keeps going forward, this is another great mod I’m really looking forward to.:)

Are you going to stay on Stable or Dev Branch?
chrisb replied to Smurf's topic in ARMA 3 - BETA DISCUSSION
Dev branch (not playing it much anyway, A2 instead).;) -
1 & 2 go hand in hand, have a few days in the Editor flying or doing anything that you want, it’s a great way to learn the ropes without being disturbed. Then once that’s done go in-game online and show off your skills. Finding a good group to play the game with will make a huge difference. Good luck with it and welcome..:)
