Mil Mi-6A "Hook" (beta)
chrisb replied to NightIntruder's topic in ARMA 2 & OA - ADDONS & MODS: COMPLETE
Seems reasonable the above mentioned. I was wondering though, shouldn't it handle a little like a wobbly jelly when really slow, o.k. maybe not that bad, but the Mi26 (IIRC), handles fairly realistically for its size, little harder to keep it under control when really slow. Just a thought. Really nice heli anyway, great work, thanks for sharing. :) That said, I have never spoken to a pilot of one of these things. -
I think the OP has had everyones opinion in triplicate now. The only thing that keeps threads like this alive is, well like me here, posting again (3rd time I think, could be 4th). The fact is, its an option and we all like various ways of enjoying the option. To find his answer the OP simply needs to play the game and try out the options. He will then find the ideal for himself, its how most of us do it. At least then this thread may close without incitement of a riot, or whatever.. Who really cares..;)

Race Built Galleon - An orphaned project
chrisb replied to Delta Hawk's topic in ARMA 3 - ADDONS & MODS: DISCUSSION
I have to say congratulations on getting your work this far. I understand and respect your reasons for not going further. I have had this running in A2 and A3, looks impressive to say the least. The interior detail was really getting there, I have been on a couple of sailing ships like this, one in Devon (Golden Hind replica) and another in London, your interior really captures those interiors well. The low claustrophobic feel to the cannon deck is great, the lower deck, crew quarters I take it, is also well done (although your walking in water). The top decks are fantastic really, although unfinished, when finished I think it would have looked superb. Anyway sorry to see it not finished, however, as a simple sailing ship for fun, or put on as a background display in some port, in a scenario, this would still look impressive. It still is/was a great project, wish I had the skills to finish it, I would love to see someone pick it up and try. But you leave it a 'picture' in A2 & A3 gently floating on a clear sea against any backdrop ('Porto' it looks great), a pointer to times gone by. Looks great kitted out fully, going sailing the high seas now..(all in A2). http://i57.tinypic.com/28thxmp.jpg http://i57.tinypic.com/2aio806.jpg http://i59.tinypic.com/8ze2io.jpg http://i58.tinypic.com/15d1che.jpg Thanks for releasing your work on it anyway. :) -
using large page memory mapping, for increased performance
chrisb replied to fred41's topic in ARMA 3 - DEVELOPMENT BRANCH
I did this method a while ago, not sure really if it made that much difference. -
I have a camera in real life, floating around a little higher than me, around a metre or so to the rear of my head. Just to make sure I’m moving o.k. also handy for showing me the back of my head, back & arse (not a pretty site), which of course is all perfectly natural, need to see all that to know your there. Silly! Yes, but have you read some of these comments………………… ;).. 3rd person more realistic!, nearly fell off my chair, which would have been done in 1st person, but the camera would have caught it for one of those shows '£250' not to be barked at.:D
-
Old test but gives overall 'player' gain in 3rd person. Of course its much easier than 1st person, you could of course use dfs_3rdperson and bring the camera in, I have it pulled out for testing, as seen. Could put the camera on the units shoulder or slightly right or left of his head, also pulled in would keep that players gain lower and therefore a little more on a level with 1st person. Its good for testing, but to me its only for testing, playing has to be 1st person really.

Bornholm, Denmark [Terrain WIP]
chrisb replied to egilsandfeld's topic in ARMA 3 - ADDONS & MODS: DISCUSSION
I like this, don't take this the wrong way, but its an A2 style terrain for A3. Should make it more realistic to play. I see a few original buildings and foilage from prior games in the series, which is good. What is performance like in SP (editor)? also can the clutter be minimised around buildings a little? Just seems noone ever maintains their gardens around the arma gaming world or 'BI' world. Which you can perhaps expect in some parts of the world, but I wouldn't of thought it applied to Denmark, or does it? Looking forward to this terrain and wish you lots of luck with it. :) -
For me its 3rd person for testing and 1st for playing. But it will feel real for whoever is playing, either 3rd or 1st person, whatever you like. I just know that 1st person is harder, which probably makes me think its more realistic. But its really down to the player, either way, just enjoy..

If you choose to put anything out into the public domain, you’ll need to grow a thick skin. I understand that its upsetting to have hard work attacked, but if your confident the missions are good, then why worry. Those that have played your missions before and enjoyed them, will seek them out..;)

Glad to see you guys get the review, you deserve it. There's away to go yet, but your on the right track, looking at that review. Great job.

They are very good the vids for Unigine engine, I also follow Outerra. Still, larger and larger isn't always the best way to go, unless of course you just want one terrain to play on all the time. There are places on terrains from Arma, A2 and of course A3 (goes without saying), that I am still yet to find and play on. Its pretty impossible to play on every part of a terrain, would take a really long time to see everywhere, especially concerning the prior titles, where there is such a vast choice of terrains. There is always new ground to find. Regards BI changing, doubt it, although the engine shows signs of buckling, here and there.

I tried vanilla AI for the latest update, to keep in tune with AI progress. They are the best vanilla AI for the series that I have played with, they seek cover reasonably well, seem not to rush as much, teamwork (within a team, not team to team) is pretty good on the whole, stance choice is not too bad. Teamwork between teams could be a lot better, especially when in close proximity to one another, thinking either side of a road etc. I have seen with vanilla AI, one team fully engage with the enemy, whilst another team just mtrs away, hangs back, not helping at all. Seems basic things are missing somehow (communication). The need to endlessly press forward is de'press'ing, it leads to many dead in no time, which is not real at all for this type of scenario (just ground troops). There is little in the way of thinking going on, or the impression of thinking. Hold back in cover, plan, instead of rushing forward WW1 style without a plan it seems. The stance would be better if changed when hearing nearby gunfire sound, i.e. go crouched and into cover first (hard cover if pos), for a short time before investigating. They still seem to be oblivious to this for some reason and tend to just stand around. I’m talking about nearby gunfire, not directed at them, but heard locally, not way off in the distance. Simple things like this, although I’m not saying simple to sort out, but simple visually, breaks belief instantly, which is a shame. That's where modded gets the upper hand, simple things they do, make a big difference for believing them in-game. The more they can be seen to react to situations, the more the player will relax and believe they are a real threat or great teammates to have around. Still, they're improving, vanilla AI, so that's to be applauded.:)

So its going to be a site for hosting mod/addons for the whole series or just A3 (or dayz) ? Are you thinking of putting a forum on there ? Font wise, my preference is keep it easy to read and straight forward. Armaholic has a nice easy to nav site with huge numbers of mod/addons hosted for download. Maybe follow that sort of route with a more gritty format if thats what your after. Heading looks a little dayz for me, maybe thats what you want. Good luck with it anyway, I'll be following your progress..:)

Great to see this released in Alpha form, will be good to see it up and running. Thanks for the early peek at it. Good luck with your progress. :)

Arms and legs stick out of vehicles
chrisb replied to Kaxii's topic in ARMA 2 & OA - TROUBLESHOOTING
Your probably running some mod/addons, its something in there clashing, I would think. Try removing your mod/addons and trying it in Vanilla, then add each mod/addon one by one, until you find the ones that clash/conflict with each other. I think that's it. :) -
Yes, sorry, its a TMR feature having looked again (auto-rest):o, I'm running their mod at the moment, doing all sorts of testing, thought it was in-game for good, maybe it will be. Its a good little feature they have, but I prefer weapon rest with a key to initialise, feels safer to know its rested. But a nice feature anyway.

I read the roadmap for A3. One large easy to use huge ‘Sandbox Centre’. A3 with TOH type flight, sounds good. The ability to use A2 and Iron Front within A3 (to a point) is already here, could be developed further (not talked about on the roadmap, but a side issue for the future, perhaps). A launcher in conjunction with workshop to make access to the right mod/addon (auto updated) easier to download/install, combined with the ability to drive the player straight to a game/server running the same mod/addons, all sounds very neat and tidy especially for the new player. Can be frustrating installing and enabling mod/addons for the new ones to the game, then trying to find servers etc and which mod/addons they run. Give it a nice clear easy to use interface, or have it run alongside SU and others. So that’s all great, they’re looking at that a little more, bring it more in-house, open up the MP side more too. Make it all more easier. Obviously as well, they’re picking up on the newer players (plus those yet to come), who feel a little baffled and overwhelmed by the series, its content and especially its mechanics/controls. The Bootcamp is certainly needed in A3 for new players. Its much more of a joy to play more fully, than simply play around the periphery. To do that, you need to master the many controls, spending time with a tutorial for newer players will enhance their A3 experience hugely, I would have thought. Given the development of new player/group made content that enhances the game in individual ways, customising if you like. A3, or the ‘Sandbox Project’ as it seems to be turning into, even moreso than ever before in this series, is the way gaming is going in the future, maybe. The ability to make your own personalised game if you want to, not just war, but almost anything, life, zombies, aliens, historical, etc, etc.. Then have players join your gaming world type/style, sounds right to me. Making A3 an experience, rather than simply a game, ‘The Sandbox’ idea getting bigger. Got to hand it to them, others will follow, many will fail. But BI have a track record of this type of platform/format, the roadmap seems genuinely sincere. That is a really reassuring thing to hear/read. Plus we may get some of the basics sorted out along the way. There again, many things have already been sorted, via content made by others, but that's what this type of series offers, the ability to DIY, that's what a sandbox is about anyway, isn’t it ;).. Good, can relax a little. :) Regards the new terrain when it comes, 'Go Snow', performance benefits alone, must be a consideration, especially for the mass MP crowd on pub servers..;) Edit: wrong info regards weapon resting.

New to Arma 3 and FPS on PC, need your advices and opinion.

You will only be disappointed if you can’t handle frustration. Get that behind you and it will fall into place. The setup you have will be nice to game with, I wish you well with it. Don't forget, it all takes time to setup, get some relaxation music on..:D _ Mechanical keyboards, I’ve lost count of the amounts I threw away (office wise, in the past), we were glad to get the quieter membrane ‘plastic’;) ones. My wife would shoot me dead now, if I made all that noise whilst gaming, middle of the night :butbut:. -
I agree, we should not stop talking about Vanilla AI, although I did a while ago, its never going to catch up with the very best modded AI. It never was going to catch up, only if they stop and think to employ the services of these talented people, would they see a vast change. But they're more concerned with MP now, 'run and gun' type game-play, which is a real shame. Myself, you and many, many, others have used AI mods or mixes of mods for a quite a few years in this series, it always makes the game way ahead of anything around, no other AI I have found in any game or seen used, can beat it, I feel that strongly, especially the one I use now. Just a shame many more don't experiment with AI mods in this series, they will not turn back once they find the right one, or right mix. __________________________________________________________________ One thing a really good AI mod gives the player, is AI that is the complete opposite to dumb, many just can't see that, or don't want performance hit any further. Which is a shame because they are missing out on a completely different standard of game. As is life..

The fnc_ballistics userconfig needs to go into your arma 2 main 'userconfig' in the arma 2 game folder. Just copy it over (hpp) from warmod into arma 2 userconfig, complete in its folder. Should be o.k. then. If there is no userconfig folder in your arma 2 game folder make one named exactly 'userconfig' then copy over hpp folders that are needed by some mod/addons. Not sure if others are needed for warmod as I don't use it. The root of that would look something like this: C:\Program Files\Bohemia Interactive\ArmA 2\userconfig\fnc_ballistics\

95%, that many servers don't take any mods! wow... Surprising when they change the game to the better so much. Group playing is better, using a private setup if possible.
-
Of course you’ll need modded AI to get any type of realistic behaviour at its best. AI use smoke very effectively (smoke in A2 was better though), also suppression, depending on AI mod. Its really surprising what AI can do, I have learnt a lot, even more so in the last nine months or so. I always used modded AI, right back to the beginning of Arma (didn’t play ofp on pc). Had a really good mix for A2 until middle of last year or so. It always gave far superior AI to that of vanilla, in every way. But its only of late that I have seen what AI can really do in this game. My advice, use modded AI, completely different game, better still use a mix, of course you'll have to test lots and better in a group, because of servers etc private is better, no fuse when all use the same. But still, many servers take regular AI mods and those mods all increase the AI behaviour skills some way ahead of vanilla, to some degree or other.

Its good to do some research prior to buying, must say I never heard of problems for them, but I don't use one, so not sure. I know the Nostromo has a really good build quality and surprisingly so does the little 'CyberSnipa V2' and thats pretty cheaply priced, not good enough to fully use for this game though, not configurable enough. When you have your new G13 it would be interesting to hear your views on it, peripherals are not discussed much on here, so any item review, is nice to read, especially from someone using it for this game series.
