I've thought of a radical approach to getting AI to re-arm that might be worth considering. I assume the engine knows what weapons and ammo are scattered about or on bodies everywhere on the map. Let's say the menu provides options such as "Re-arm with ammo", "Re-arm with AR", "Re-arm with MG", "Re-arm with Launcher", etc. For the first option, the AI can be told by the engine if there is any ammo suitable for it's primary weapon within x meters (there needs to be a sensible limit, so it doesn't go running 1km to pick up a weapon), so doesn't need to go to each body to check and can either go to where that ammo is or reply "No suitable ammo available". Likewise with the weapons, it can either go and grab that weapon and ammo for it, (even if they're in different places) or reply "No AR/MG weapon with ammo available", or alternatively it could display a list of the available weapons of that type which are available (and signify which of them there is also ammo available for) and let the player select from that list which one it should get. The only reason to include weapons without ammo available nearby is because one of the players might be carrying spare ammo for that weapon and might wish to give it to the AI after he's picked up the weapon. To avoid it seeming too artificial by having the AI instantly "know" what is available in the area without looking, you could do something like insert a reasonable delay before it replies, or have it go to two or three of the locations where there are weapons/ammo/bodies before replying, or have it go to all of them before replying, or have it report after it's found one weapon of x type and ammo for it, etc.

Strange, I updated on PwS a couple of days ago and that correctly updated my TS3 plugin, so maybe they corrected the package already.

Retail licences were never tied to hardware as far as I know, it was only OEM licences that MS tied to hardware, so only those are affected by the EU rulings (which didn't involve MS directly but established the principle for all perpetual software licences. Software that is provided on a subscription basis, e.g. 1-year for £50, was specifically excluded in the ruling).
-
That's not strictly true, as you can download an ISO to avoid having to upgrade through the store: http://www.cnet.com/uk/how-to/how-to-download-the-official-microsoft-windows-8-1-iso/ There are fresh install ISOs available for Windows 8.1 for those who have a Windows 8.1 key: http://www.askvg.com/official-tool-to-download-windows-8-1-setup-iso-and-create-installation-media/ In fact, you can download an Windows 8.1 ISO that will accept both Windows 8 and 8.1 keys, so it seems MS realised it was stupid to make people install Windows 8 just to upgrade to 8.1 and provided this ISO to make that unnecessary: http://dellwindowsreinstallationguide.com/download-microsoft-windows-and-office/download-microsoft-windows/download-windows-8-1-retail-and-oem-iso/download-windows-8-1-iso/ There will be CDs/ISOs available for Windows 10. I guess MS might get away with not providing a Windows 10 key to those who get the free upgrade, as long as they facilitate a path of installing Windows 7/8 with the original key and upgrading from that to Windows 10 on different hardware in future (obviously the licence still only allows it to be used on a single PC, so it will have to be deactivated on the previous PC first), to avoid interfering with the customer's right to use the perpetual licence they own (regardless of the fact that it was given to them for free) but hopefully they won't regress and as with the Windows 8.1 Update 1 ISO they'll make the Windows 10 ISO accept Windows 7/8 keys and let the activation process check whether those keys were upgraded within the first year or not. As far as I know, nowhere outside the EU has ruled it unlawful to tie software to hardware, so customers outside the EU will have to purchase a new licence if they wish to install Windows 10 on different hardware.
-
I presume they'll have a downloadable ISO for Windows 10 as they do for Windows 8, after all it is going on sale for people who don't qualify for the free upgrade so there will need to be CDs/ISOs for those people. I also presume when you upgrade they'll provide a key for your copy of Windows 10. If they don't though and someone in the EU wants to install it on different hardware, MS will have to facilitate that or else they'll be acting so as to prevent customers from exercising their legal right to do so, in breach of EU law and whilst they could decide to ignore that until someone (or the relevant EU body) takes them to court, it's fairly clear what the outcome would be so it would be rather stupid of them to waste loads of money on legal fees and I doubt they want another massive fine to add to the ones they've already managed to accrue from past EU cases.
-
Actually they're offering a free upgrade to Windows 10 if you upgrade before the end of July 2016. Once upgraded, you own a non-expiring Windows 10 licence and in Europe MS can't legally tie that to specific hardware.
-
We can buy/sell/transfer OEM licences in Europe anyway. The European Court ruled it unlawful to tie software to hardware and that the manufacturer exhausts it's rights of distribution after the original sale. I guess in recognition of this ruling, MS have an automated phone system here in the UK which doesn't ask you any questions or expect you to justify why you're activating a Dell OEM licence on a non-Dell system before giving you an activation code.

For the Love of GOD please remove weapon selection from action menu (scroll wheel)

There's also a mod "switching weapons on the move" which lets you use Ctrl+1 or 2 to change weapons. -

Except if you're using the helo AFM, in which case you have bind axis + to raise and axis - to lower. Yes, that does make it rather hard to switch between SFM and AFM! The other problem you had is due to a bug where if you have more than one axis bound to a command, each device only has 50% authority. Hopefully both issues will get fixed sometime. -
I think it was a documentary called "Shoah part 1" which I saw fairly recently and was very revealing about the contempt and jealousy Polish people had towards Jews around the time of WW2. That doesn't mean that current Poles bear any responsibility for what happened back then of course and hopefully such attitudes are no longer common or acceptable but it raises the same question that gets levelled against German citizens who said they didn't support what happened "what did you do to oppose it?" and in many cases it seems they were only too glad to see the Jews gone so that they could move into their homes. I wonder whether the heirs of those Jews have been compensated for their appropriated property, which Germany has done in large part at least?

Yeah but there was no combat/AI, which is what kills FPS in ArmA. If they can make HC automatic, so that all missions, including SP, run the AI on separate cores from the main game without users having to do anything that would seem like the best thing they can do to improve FPS.

I've upvoted that ticket and will do so for any others related to the AFM. I think it's crazy that BIS would put all that effort into bringing us AFM but leave unfixed a couple of small bugs which make it almost unusable. Whilst it's probably usable with a mouse, I really can't fly using a mouse, there's too much pulling back and pushing forward needed to make it comfortable for me, so I want to be able to use my stick and have the helo respond properly, without any lag. The AFM collective settings differing from Standard seems like a frustrating annoyance that could be patched quite easily so I don't know why they'd just leave it there annoying people.

I found the problem for me was Radeon Pro, so something about the 15.5beta must not get along with that. I tried unticking all the options in RP that I'd enabled in the A3 profile but it only started working when I completely disabled the profile (Disable API Monitoring and Disable Auto-Detection).

I'm sure I was fully updated on Thursday as I wouldn't have been able to play online Co-Op otherwise and there haven't been any updates since then have there? ---------- Post added at 02:25 ---------- Previous post was at 00:37 ---------- I found the problem for me was Radeon Pro, so something about the 15.5beta must not get along with that. That looks like the same error I started getting today (was working on Thursday) but I can't even get A3 to run http://forums.bistudio.com/showthread.php?t=192643 I did update from Catalyst 15.4beta to 15.5beta yesterday but I tried putting a few different driver dlls in the A3 folder and it didn't make any difference. All the other games I've tried work fine.
-
I tried that and it didn't help. As PwS launches A3 directly from S: without using the symlink and still gives the same error I didn't really think it could be related to the symlink.

I believe the focus on pixels is somewhat misguided. After all, you can watch real-life footage on a 1080p (or even 720p) monitor and it looks real (because it is) so we should be looking at what's missing in games that makes them not look as good. Otherwise it won't matter how many pixels you throw at the problem.

Well Dolby Atmos is meant to place sounds in the vertical space, so if that was used in games instead of 7.1 then perhaps a virtual surround implementation would be able to take that information to create 3D sound. I'm not sure how important the vertical spacing is though, surely what's most important is being able to tell the exact direction from which someone's shooting at you or a vehicle is approaching? With 5.1/7.1 speakers I get this information, just not with virtual surround on headphones.
-
I don't find virtual surround very good myself but I suspect that's due to my Auditory Processing Disorder, as other people find Razer to be great. Whether current virtual surround implementations are as good as 3D audio is surely just a matter of the processing done however. All that 3D audio can do is take the 5.1/7.1 signal from the game and process it in one way so as to try and make it sound like sounds are placed in a 3D space on a stereo headset and that could just as easily be done by a driver or external app I would have thought.
-
Virtual surround is generally done at the driver level (Dolby, Realtek) or by third-party apps (Razer surround) now, so games just have to output 5.1 and the HRTF processing is done externally.

Trivial interface changes that could make using ArmA less tedious sometimes...
doveman replied to Defunkt's topic in ARMA 3 - GENERAL
I'd like to see the right side of the Lobby/slot screen used to show the load-out for the currently selected slot. It would be very useful if we could see what weapons that role will have to use, so that people can avoid slotting roles with weapons they're not familiar with, before proceeding to the Briefing. That would be more useful for most players than seeing everyone's ping and there could always be a button to toggle between load-out and ping screens. -

Perhaps another option would be to list Briefing, Tasks, etc horizontally in a row at the top of the screen, then have the details for the selected option displayed on the left-hand side of the screen, where it would avoid obscuring the map and targets/markers. -

Any way to disable Ctrl+mouse movement from shifting view in vehicles?
doveman posted a topic in ARMA 3 - QUESTIONS & ANSWERS
I kept finding my view shifting weirdly when trying to fly helicopters and eventually worked out that holding Ctrl and moving the mouse does this. It was happening because I use Ctrl+End bound to one of my mouse keys for a TFAR transmit key. I've looked through the key mappings and can't see anything about this. Is there any way to disable it as it's very annoying?
