    Arma 2 Addon request thread

Sup guys, I've been thinking that a Minecraft mod would be pretty awesome for Arma 2. And, it shouldn't be too hard to implement some of the most recognisable features. Minecraft fans, I know you're here somewhere in these leagues of Arma modding geniuses. I've got a few ideas if anyone is interested? :) Considering Arma's style and aesthetic, I don't think it would be particularly effective to render all the 'blocky' stuff from Minecraft - instead, it should be a Christopher Nolan-style epic representation. Still with some fantasy stuff, but more realistic. I've been having a play with a few of my favourite addons that inspire me, and I think if they can simply be combined (with permission), it would be half way there... eg. Undead mod, 'Creationism'... And we already have animals, open world, day/night cycle, weather, map/compass/clock, villages, explosives, forests... With just a few extra creations it would be possible to make an awesome trailer for it that would appeal directly to the Minecraft community :D (And once again surprise non-Arma people by achieving the normal-gaming-impossible)! Making a Creeper based on a zombie script would be TERRIFYING! It runs fast, silently, and just explodes when it gets close to you. I hope some of you fancy giving it a go, 'cos I'm not clever enough to do it...(although I can do media and video stuff - so let me know if I can help anyone with GFX through some kind of trade).
  2. Awesome, yeah that all makes sense. You're the coder, so you knows whats best! Maybe one day you could modify the zombie script to make a Minecraft Creeper? :D I wish I could help you out, being an animator and all. Unfortunately, I'm not a CG animator. Still, if you need motion graphics or Disney-style animation for some reason, I can do that. Keep up the good work!

    More gun simulation? interaction

A-ha, that's what I'm thinking. I like the idea of more weapon interaction, but we have to trust that our avatars are trained professionals. Mind you, it would be cool if the weapon handling was more difficult + awkward when you are playing as a civilian. So, it would be nice to have a couple of simple options/features, but no really complicated combos. Plus, Arma already uses like every button on the keyboard, so how can we allow for that many individual functions?

    New Sony HMZ-T1 HMD

Lol, there will be 18+ sites specifically for HMZ-T1 + Kinect owners...

That's good stuff right there. I like the blue lighting, the abstract background and the depth of field. The reflection is really nice. How do you want it to look? Like a real car, or embrace the fact that it's a model? You could try decreasing the depth of field, ie. make the back a bit more out of focus?

    Predator Mod

Dear Charon, You are a genius. This is amazing. It works perfectly, and scares the hell out of me. Carry on as normal. Love Jack.
  7. This sounds very exciting. I was also a big fan of Charons Undead Mod, and spent countless hours creating infection experiments and missions. The best thing about zombies in Arma is that you can more accurately simulate a real infection spreading than any proper zombie game that exists! Also, if you look on Youtube, the Arma zombie videos attract more non-Arma people than most other Arma content... It would be fantastic if you continued to build on the zombie-logic and perhaps tried some new features. For example, we really need a standing still zombies-surrounding-my-car window banging animation. That would be terrifying.
  8. Right...could I try and run with this confusing concept, to a possible interesting application? (I gather there would be some limitations at this point, but in theory, would this crazzzzy project work?) Say I had your GPS thing installed and Arma 2 running. I'm driving a tank, and tracking its position. I have somehow set up an Arduino board connected to a hobby RC transmitter controlling a Tamiya remote controlled tank. SEE WHERE I'M GOING? Basically, can I drive a tank around the landscape in Arma, and the information can be sent out of the game to control something else in real time? Obviously this would not work with just the coordinates of the player, but if you could access all movement information from an in-game object, such as acceleration, direction etc, then in theory you could be controlling a tank in the real world!?? I've been reading too many Arduino projects...
  9. I'm currently using a HP Envy 17-1190 laptop for my Arma-ing, well, and most other things too. It runs Arma2 extremely well for a laptop, but then its not exactly a portable laptop. I would be playing it on my desktop computer, but for some reason Arma 2 has some severe difficulties being friends with the 9800 GTX + Windows 7...

Cheers! You totally should. I got a whole collection of Micro Machines that I want to photograph, you can create a real nice super shallow depth of focus when you get up close to little things. Having a macro lens helps too! Yeah, there are some Germans getting taken away at the back. There's also Oddball from Kellys Heroes leaning against the Sherman...

    New Sony HMZ-T1 HMD

Gonk, I can't wait to hear how you get on with it! I am very interested in this piece of kit, and have read some very good reviews of it too. I think perhaps if you had the budget and the proper means to implement it, it could be extremely immersive and fun, especially for Arma. If you're interested in virtual reality, check out this concept vid by some clever guy who uses Kinect-captured body movement to animate his first-person avatar whilst also wearing Vuzix glasses. Doing this with the HMZ-T1 should be even more effective...Imagine being able to look down and see your characters' body moving in exact sync with your own... (you can kind of see why this guy chose a cute anime girl...)

    Any interesting books to recommend?

I'd recommend 'The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy' by Douglas Adams. A bit crazy, but highly entertaining. Closer to the war themes, I would say 'Life and Fate' by Vasily Grossman. It's a massive book, but very insightful to the Russian side of WW2. I also heard that the BBC radio adaption is pretty good, if you'd rather listen to it...

Vilas, I'm loving the cat pictures! Who woulda thought that the guy who made some of my favourite addons also takes stunning pictures of cats... Daniel, I'm getting into video too. I've got a Canon 7D (with Rode mic)...Otherwise, I like to artistically photograph some of my kit models. ---------- Post added at 21:48 ---------- Previous post was at 21:47 ----------
