  1. The teamwork part of the Ai i would think is more complex than other games. But its also completely absent in all likelihood from games like HL2 and CoD where they are probably on their own, not to mention so completely scripted. Thus, they don't need group ai. In some other respects maybe yes, like the ability to follow in a formation or change formations, not all game have, or need that based on the type of gameplay. Not all games have states of awareness either, but don't need them either. Ai in a game like CoD is probably almost always in the "engage the player" mode.

Yet in the vision and combat dept, i see no evidence of them being more complicated. What evidence do you have? I have seen that youtube video of the Arma2 Ai vs. Ofp2 Ai, but the Ofp2 Ai were just terrible to begin with. In CoD, Ai will advance and retreat from cover to cover, i don't see Arma doing that, do they ever take cover? Maybe the new patches have made a difference?

What I would like a more complex version of the current Ai system so i can do close-in stealth missions. Based on my experience i will be seen only based on simple range, FoV and A.I. state checks.

  2. The AI are just better than we are in forests. Their eyes don't get confused by millions of pine needles the way ours do, and they notice figures flitting inbetween trunks better.

But they don't see through bushes. And forests have less grass than fields. They do see through some canopy leaves better than we do, but this should only be a decisive factor if you are fighting in forested gulleys.

The AI spotting is just fine. It's the quality of the map objects that really counts. All ArmA 3 needs is a bigger middle detection stage between obliviousness and intimate knowledge of your location, so ghillie sniping is less of a one-shot gig.

You should go read about how A.I. vision usually works, its much simpler than i think you realize. Or don't, it kinda disappointing. Bushes and other things that block vision likely just a very simple collision box around them to trigger a sound made while running through them, trigger leaves coming off when bullets pass through and that same simple box is likely used to determine line-of-sight exists [to part your collision box]. If the player is within a pre-determined visual range which depends on the awareness state of the a.i. {ie. relaxed, active, searching} AND, the player is within the Ai FoV, AND a cast ray from the Ai can hit the player's collision box, then the player is seen. The problem is that the rays can go through a one mm wide gap in collision boxes. The more A.i. that can exist at one time, the simpler they need to be in general.

However, I'm starting to think the particular vision problem i noticed was really a problem of the ACE mod rather than with Arma though. If 6th Sense was still going, i'd probably bring this to their attention as i think it would make getting in and around the enemy more easy and realistic. Not so completely range based.

  3. I agree on AI spots/hear/communicate too well.

If you play with AI team mates in a area with a lot of trees/bushes your AI mates will continuesly spot the enemy which you yourself never would have seen.

Best option to improve your game experience is to simply lower difficulty under game options. I did that to simply being able to play the vietnam mods available.

    Yes, this exactly.

Again, maybe i problem with a mod, but i would be semi-surprised if the 6th Sense crew didn't realize there was such a difference.

  4. -Snow map, falling snow.

-Continue using green landscapes with pointy evergreen trees -big reason maintain interest in Arma2

-A.I. that allows us to do more stealthy, in-close missions, day and night.

-A.I. that don't see you through grass and bushes.

-Guards smoking animations, more idle animations.

-Helicopter flight physics for mouse/keyboard use like in BF2 -the designer was a long time flight player and really nailed this!

-Better [english] voice acting, or none at all, just text.

-Categorized keyboard control assignment interface -i don't want to see anything about changing seagull commands when i just install the game -i need my head to explode only once a year or so (yes, i knew what the seagull is)

    - ! Please, option to disable popup window for each keyboard shortcut change! This made me VERY (VERY! -my teeth were gritted) frustrated before i even started playing. [[[i use my left hand for the keyboard resting on the normal ASDF position which give me more keys around the immediate left side of my hand for complex games like Arma 2 - this also promotes quick typing and more instinctual number key use. This is a lot of keys to change. Also, the mouse re-centers i think each time?]]]

    -3D support

-Mission generator which gives me full control of conditions, no waiting, (lifes too short, especially when your older im noticing...) no unlocking (or have that a separate challenge).

-More pre-made missions with no squad to help get the player into the game without having to learn all the squad functions. In OFP, i used to love that mission where you placed the charges on the road and waited for the trucks and BMP to come. Solo missions like that.

-Keep the super-high resolution function, thats cool!

-Option to disable the automatic brightness adjustment. (don't know what its called, the eye adjusting to light condition). Or be able to limit its effect, sometimes its way overpowered.

Heres an idea for the Ai: An Ai visual detection system based on actual color, possibly using an older secondary video card like PhysX can working in tandem with the game engine. It involves taking a low resolution screenshot of the player and randomly analyzing a sample of pixels around the player and comparing that to a random sample of pixels of the player and comparing the difference. Players with a separate video card could up the amount of sampling and the resolution of the shots and the amount of shots over time. The difference shouldn't be the only factor of course, player movement speed, Ai current awareness state, etc could factor in.

Biggest thing for me is the A.I. visual detection and general behavior. I just can't do what i want to do without a suspension of disbelief. The Ai are important, they are the only antagonists in a sand-box world.

Arma 3 is looking great, just saw some new video, but so did Arma 1 and 2, which i never played, just tinkered around with. Good luck and all the best.

  5. But I thought grass and bushes were heavily armored IRL and couldn't be shot through?

I mean we all know that when the grass covers human's eyes the huge rest of his body becomes instantly invisible and cannot be damaged. And not only AI, but human players cheat by shooting me through bushes and grass - how dare they?

Well, i hope THIS post goes through... :assault rifle owner smiley:

No, i mean its almost a rule that if they go through a forest, they will get spotted and then annihilated. Maybe its the ACE or CBA mod then?

  6. I've got the Nvidia 3D glasses. They came with my Samsung 2233RZ 120Hz. monitor. Although I really like the monitors refreshrate (games look smoother now), I can't say I'm a big fan of the 3D glasses yet. 3D looks nice in some games but after an hour of playing the initial WOW effect is gone and you'll go back to normal mode. The drivers screw up brightness and gamma settings on your display so most of the time you`ll have to uncheck the 3D mode toggle from the Nvidia control panel.

I'm not a stranger to 3D glasses. Five years or so back I had Edimensional 3D shutter glasses with my 19` CRT display. It was all new and exciting then but you`ll soon get annoyed by the dimmer view through the glasses and even though they say it won't flicker with 120hz, it still does and you still get image bleeding. All in all, it's nice for a while but it's not really functional.

I've tried them with ArmA II and the game is badly optimized for 3D, i.m.o. I guess they could easily fix it if they made a 3D crosshair toggle available for 3D gamers. Right now, you can't hit things properly when 3D is enabled. Also, you need to tweak the 3D view with the special keys to get the weapon you're holding to look like 1 3D weapon. Standard, if you switch 3D on, you'll get 2 weapons. Once they're merged to become 1, 3D on the weapon looks nice but your surroundings look a bit odd. Not much depth, except for 3D models in game, like trees and vehicles. But they all look a bit cartoony and small, especially the soldiers look like they're toys. Also, like I mentioned before, you can't hit things cause your crosshair's not really 3D.

If you can come across the initial dimness, flickering and image bleeding, the 3D glasses are a nice little gimmick, especially for the first timer. For ArmA 2, all you can do for now is walk around casually in 3D without engaging enemies cause you'll end up dead. Some things look kinda nice and are worth watching in 3D. Maybe if they fix the crosshair and bring some other 3D improvements it'll be a lot better. Right now the glasses are only good for watching 3D movies (which IS a blast!) and playing some 3D optimized games and even then you'll be likely to put the glasses away after one hour of playing. I do find Microsoft flight sims entertaining in 3D because you can just fly around casually and cockpits look really nice in 3D. Also, runways give a bit more depth when you're on the ground.

My final verdict is you don't really need 3D glasses. They can be nice for a while but if you're looking for fast paced action and really want to perform well in shooting enemies and stuff, don't go 3D. It sucks and is only nice for enjoying scenery. And even then, it's not perfect.

I'm wondering if your settings are right reading this. Do you increase the separation of the images enough that your eyes are staring straight forward when viewing distant scenery? The brightness issue is one i hope they solve too, but i just increase the brightness levels for shadow detail and increased visual clarity in general. 3D Vision 2 has apparently solved the brightness issue now that i think about it. Users are saying their new technique requires them to lower the level below the maximum brightness level. You might look into one of the new 27" from Acer, Viewsonic and a couple other brand someone mentioned. I can't remember mainly because i've gone a totally different route: A 46" 3DTV has offer a high FoV and has amazingly hard to see pixels even when viewed from just under 1 meter away.

I consider 3D, even now, despite the current issues, which they are solving, to be a MAJOR step towards virtual reality levels of immersion and i have a hard time going back to 2D. I consider gaming on my relatively cheap 46" 3DTV, a step above my last 2D monitor, a 2560x1600 30" Dell, which i used for 4 years. According to Steam, i now have over 500 hours of 3D gaming under my belt and i've not looked back since. Hopefully they will solve these issues quickly and hopefully the used market, which is what i'm forced to used mainly due to income, will grow.

  7. Are you talking about the 3D resolution or monitor resolution? Setting 3D resolution to 2x your monitor resolution will give more detail, but I don't think it'll improve performance...

Lol, no, it doesn't improve performance. If only it did... we'd have a miracle on our hands. But at 3840 x 2160 my GTX 570 handled it amazingly well. But how to do this with games that aren't so demanding, like Mass Effect would be a good candidate. I use a 46" 3DTV of 1920x1080 for a monitor and doing this makes this low dpi screen look like how i think a 4k monitor would look. Could any official's say whether this is a special Arma thing that only Arma can do or could i apply this technique to another game.

  8. I noticed setting Arma2 to 2x my monitor's resolution gave a huge increase in detail and smoothes aliasing. Not only that, its playable, easily. I was playing Metro 2033 and was noticing how much MSAA blurred the scene and it was to the point where i didnt' want to use it even though my computer could handle it. I was hoping someone could reply with some knowledge on how this works. Does this use DirectX or is this special Arma 2 code? I tried increasing Metro 2033's resolution via the user.cfg's but it didn't work.

  9. I disagree obviously that the Ai are sophisticated. The programming is sophisticated and took a lot of time and im sure takes up a lot of resources, but the results are often not sophisticated. Probably more than 60% of the time, the 6th Sense crew were fired upon well before exposing themselves. It was a regular thing. I know there are many factors, as i've programmed and read how AI see and wrote up a theory for a more color based approach to spotting the player possibly utilizing a secondary graphics card much like physX.

  10. Yeah the bad AI of the old ARMA2 demo, which stop you the old ofper purchasing it.;)

Why don't you download the free ARMA2:FREE then update it to 1.11 to see if AI could shoot you through bush?

Well, I watch Briggsil's 6th Sense videos and see them getting spotted and killed through bushed and grass constantly. They have hundreds of hours of video and i've watched every one. Plus i bought the game when it was on sale and ran into a few problems with the (ACE or CBM or something) mod, which i had to get working after seeing all those weapons, then lost interest, though i did tinker around with it a little bit. Never installed the addon, which i bought also.

Honestly, pick any Arm2 video on his channel and i'll bet you the mission gets cut short via getting spotted and shot at through trees. Even if one guy gets shot, that guy has to sit the rest of the mission out. That sucks to sit out when its for such a dumb thing that out of your control.

    Example (at part 5):

  11. Hate it when my title is so thorough, i have nothing else to say in the text...:D

Well, I suppose i will though since im new to the forum [or been away for so long, actually]. I played Operation Flashpoint for probably a good 500 hours. I completed the campaign and the addon Red Hammer and did a lot of multiplayer too. Was eagerly awaiting Arma1 based on the screenshots, but after playing the demo, i never bought it. The A.I. was the biggest thing, kept seeing them lie down, slowly out of cover or doing other weird stuff. Fighting against human opponents can be a remedy if the ai bother you, but multiplayer had lag and again, felt so...un-smooth like i've grown used to with BF2 and BF2142 and similar games.

Arma2 was better, but i ran into a lot of weird problems trying to get into the demo. I was literally in a rage at trying to configure my keyboard [["are you sure you want to reconfigure that key, this key too? are you sure?, surely this one your mistaken? this one too? and that one? and that one and that one and that one and that one and that one?"]] Ugh.. But here again the A.I. is still the main thing that kept me away. Sometimes too good, most of the time too bad, rarely acting natural, always robotic. Grass was added to arma2 and looked amazing, but then the A.I. shot through it and bushes making the game similar to an old D&D game requiring you to use a whoooole lot of you imagination to pretend you were actually being stealthy sneaking through the woods. Arma2 two also had the mission generator, but it was almost totally frustratingly random and made you sit there wait for another one. Why can't i just do what i want? I could go on and on, but im sure its already all been said before...

I do watch some very fun mission videos from Briggil on youtube of the 6th Sense clan [they get shot through grass and bushes almost every mission come to think of it] and thats been a big motivator for getting Arma 3 and i at least will definitely give the trial a shot when it comes out.
