A CoD player will never have to use grid references (even the slightly dumbed down form in ArmA, still same concept) or compass points, and will never have to know how to read contour lines on a topographic map. Therefore, it is an inferior game. I played ArmA for about a year before I went on a trip to Colorado. Bought a US Geological Survey map of the area we went to, and lo and behold I can make perfect sense of it when everyone else is hurriedly pulling up Google maps 3D on their iPhones. ArmA makes the traditional tools of the military officer relevant. Map, compass, binoculars, watch, etc.

I bought a MacBook Pro with OSX on it in October of 2010 for $1500, built myself a Win7 desktop computer using parts from Newegg for approximately $1000. Macs are a total racket and I feel like an idiot for owning what is essentially an overpriced netbook with "unibody construction" etc. Apple makes iPods.

How can I forget that one?! While you're at it, model this guy: -

I'd like the following: No.1 Mk.III (classic SMLE) No.4 Mk.IT (scoped No.4) No.5 Jungle Carbine L42A1 Enforcer If you mount a UGL on an Enfield you should be forcibly sterilized. -

Buddy of mine goes hog hunting with a .22LR... in this case it's about shot placement, but hunting deer is a whole hell of a lot different than combat. Deer don't shoot back. A miss on a deer means it's just going to run away; a miss on an insurgent means he's going to run away and then come back later and kill you. I'd rather be able to hit the dude and kill him outright than wing him and piss him off. -
Surely there are plenty of Downed Pilot maps on Chernarus? The last bit of Eagle Wing comes to mind... I certainly couldn't top that.

Hi all, Been working on this after getting fed up with zombies. Basic idea is that you play as two downed pilots attempting to escape an enemy-held Lingor and get picked up at an LZ that's really far away. I've never seen any downed pilot scenarios available for ArmA (which is pretty surprising), but I have a feeling I'm not looking hard enough... The mission is challenging and can be played many ways. You can choose to just escape, using stealth etc, or you can fight a guerrilla war against the invaders. The backstory, which makes little if any sense and is primarily the way it is because I don't like to clutter up my co-op levels with addons: Features: - Celery's bandaging script (players start with 3 bandages apiece) - Very limited starting equipment - Enemy patrols around most of Lingor - Free-form environment... do whatever you want - A guerrilla hideout at a farm northeast of Mt. Peligron that can supply you with weapons Requirements: - ArmA2: Combined Operations - Lingor v1.3 and Lingor units addon packs I'd like for someone more experienced than me to take a look at this map and let me know if I'm doing things right, and what can be improved on. I'm fairly new to mission design. Post in here if you're interested. Thanks!

Jungle Wars: Island of Lingor

That seems to have fixed it, though I still hear a glass-breaking and steel-crunching noise whenever I hit plants. :/ -

I love Lingor but I'd also really love to see some of the vegetation fixed to where running into a fern doesn't blow out my truck tire. That just doesn't make sense. Running into a soft-stemmed plant shouldn't damage my vehicle. -

I've always wanted a game like ArmA -- reasonably realistic ballistics (I shoot a lot IRL), mix of vehicles, planes, and helicopters that the user can fly given the knowledge, an inventory system, accurate weapons and equipment, and enormous world sizes. And zombies. I remember playing Nazi Zombies and wishing for some sort of "overland adventure zombie game with customizable equipment and weapons" -- little did I know that this game had been out since 2005, and I only found it in late 2010. This is the reason why I've started to really dislike CoD et al.

The ArmA3 preview showed the character swapping a red dot sight for a long-range sniper optic. Please don't try to tell me that you will maintain sub-MOA accuracy at 800 yards because "you made sure to place it on the numbered spot on the rail". Sure it works when shooting cans at 25 yards with your friend's AR, but on a DMR shooting man-size targets at great distance I don't believe that for a minute.
-
Being able to switch scopes and sights in-game is stupid. You'd lose your zero if you swapped out a scope in the middle of a fight. You have to rezero sights any time you fool around with them. Stupid feature based on lack of real world shooting experience.

He said ArmA is too hard for him and he can't be bothered to play it. Guess it's because you can't clear bunkers with a scoped rifle in ArmA or shoot people with crossbows or kill them with Tomahawks.

My housemate literally yells, screams, curses and stomps when he gets killed in CoD. Meanwhile I'm in my room fighting off squads of OPFOR by myself in a much more challenging game and I don't yell and scream about it, despite the fact that what I am doing takes a hundred times as much skill to pull off. Yes, ArmA2 is a game that turns you into a conceited, insufferable, elitist asshole because everything else just becomes child's play! :P

Guess nobody is interested?

Just would like to say thanks to BIS for being such a great developer -- I can't think of any other game studio that gives out a free toy like the MD-500 for us to play with like this. I crashed a whole hell of a lot but I'm only a good pilot in ArmA, so... -
What kind of computer did you order for $4100 out of curiosity? I built mine for $1000 using Newegg parts and I never get below 25FPS on any map in A2.
-
I've made a few custom levels on Utes where a group of partisans attack the airfield held by the ChDKZ insurgents. The problem is that when we play it's normally only two of us vs. the AI, and that only lends itself to insurgent/guerilla warfare. I hate commanding AI subs so guerilla warfare it is...
-
Because in ArmA I can get out of the planes/helicopters with a rifle and fight on the ground.
-
1. I bought ArmA. 2. I stopped playing CoD. 3. I stopped playing FSX. 4. I stopped playing Forza. Mission accomplished.
-
Exactly... they don't seem to understand that ArmA replaces Call of Duty, Battlefield 3, FlightSim, racing games etc. And yeah, since these guys are basically unemployed for all intents and purposes, it's difficult for them to drop that kind of money on a computer for gaming. But then again they're perfectly willing to waste $1500 on a Mac toy that does basically nothing except Google Chrome and Microsoft Office... but let's not go there...
-
The biggest barrier to being able to play this game with friends is its CPU and video card requirements. Right now I can only play it with one of my friends (he has a decent computer we built), and everyone else just gets to watch or take turns playing. Two guys have said "playing a $30 game is not worth building a $1000 computer for".

Can someone tell me why I should buy Arma 2:CO instead of BF3?

I quite agree, I don't need to give EA Games any more of my money. -

$30 for ArmA: CO vs. $65 for CoD: Black Ops. I think I know what option is better. Edit: I got Armed Assault from GamersGate and have had no problems, but I got ArmA2:CO from WalMart for $30 though it seems they don't carry it anymore, just the A2: Reinforcements pack.
