Possibilty to render out height maps/Z-buffer or sth similar
NordKindchen posted a topic in ARMA 3 - COMMUNITY MADE UTILITIES
Is there a possiblity to get the height out of the game? I am doing a retexture of the whole island with 16times more resolution. It would be a huge timesaver to have the height of the map so I can better adjust the different textures on the terrain. In the worst case I would have to take the heights out of the games map but as you can imagine they are not that resoluted=/ Any help? Thanks and Greetz! -

+ this. As I stated before the game samples all my textures down to standard size after a certain amount of time. And only a restart will reload them to their old size. +Only that this is my own free time I am putting into it. Its more like you are working in a food distribution center on a volantary basis and suddenly you experience that the center only sells bad food. So you decide to drop for the time beeing. Its that simple: If Arma has the potential to be what I want it to be - then I am willing to put all the time in it that I can afford. But as it is now - I wont be playing the game unless there is some big improvement in the effects part. And if I am not going to play the game than the huge amount of time that is going to be needed to finish the mod is gone to waste. Altis will take months of work to complete. Even for Stratis I was counting one month at least. on top of that I am a student and need to work on other stuff as well - not to mention my social life;) And to the effects: I cannot say often enough how bad they are in my eyes. (apart from muzzle flashes and sunglare - these are acutally great) For example the sabot impact effect is nothing more than the simplest of things you could have ever put into a game. I think Ive shown enough support for the game in the last year. If the devs improve the part that are important to me/ if blastcore improves them enough then I am back on the stage. And I just wanted to keep you guys up to date. -

Just wanted to share anothe pic. The thing is: I am a bit disappointed by the state of the game. I was so sure things like the explosions and the vehicle wrecks were just placeholders. But they werent. So for now I stopped the work on the midrange replacement mod. It is now all depending on how good Blastcore 3 will be. If blast core manages to improve the effects to a state that I can enjoy I am going to work on the mod again. Till then I cannot enjoy the game and therefore wont put more effort in it. Just thought you should know that. Best regards! -
Indeed shockwaves are missing badly. They add a hell a lot of power to explosions.

So if there will be no videos could you pls let us know an very randomn approximate release time? Sth like at least 6 month, or around 2 month or at least one month or sth. Nothing certain though - we all know that - but we are all very eager to see your mod and it would be nice to get an idea on how long to approximately wait. I havent said it until now but my mod for midrange textures is on ice till I see satisfying effects in the game. So I am sure that will make a release date for your mod even more exciting for people^^ Ps: Since I was asked to: (bradley and abrams shooting at high house)And heres a - tracers look intense...

lol Actually BF3 effects are quite representative. JDAMs? Pretty much hollywood in real life. Bofors guns (switch to 1:10) Pretty much hollywood too Leopard 2 shooting a bus - Hollywood much? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FZf8h3iyUDs Despite this its not that Armas effects are not hollywood enough - they are simply very very badly made. Even in Red Orchestra Rising storm the mortar/artillery explosions look better and that game is OLD. And the wrecks we got in Arma 3 are from the last century. Black textures all over? That is plain laziness. Even world of tanks manages to show off impressive tank wrecks with fire out of the tower etc. But not so our all realistic Arma 3. No it goes with black boxes. So for the record: We are not looking for hollywodish effects (even though explosions DO look hollywoodish in real life) but for finally some GOOD ones. Ps: Oh and hollywood much??!?!

Well at least they should have put in SOME KIND OF USEABLE EFFECTS. As far as it concerns me I am very disappointed about the effects they integrated. They felt like placeholders in the alpha and beta and now it feels like they were just to lazy to improve them. This or even worse: They were not capable of improving them. But that would mean a lack of professionalism.... Anyway: The effects (apart from the gun muzzle flashes and gunlamplights) are laughable. Just a joke. And its not the job of the community to fix jokes. Just my two cents.

Mhhh....to be honest I dont see any changes. It seems its rather a small workover than a big change. If I didnt catch anything wrong the resolution of the midrange textures stayed the same. And there is no different midrange texture to see anywhere. So jeah...either its only a small fix or it is sth that will only be used later. I think its rather the first.....

could we see some example videos from the current state? Just a quick wip look?=) I think many ppl would love to see some updates!
-
Any chance of getting a sneak peak at the current state? I am not touching Arma 3 again until I get sth to fix the place holder effects BIS put into the game. Theres no way to describe how bad the current effects are. The current explosion effects in Arma 3 would not even be considered good 4 years back. Ridiculous. Therefore: Any chance you would release a work in progress version of your mod? Since anything is better than the current state. Best regards!

So strongly needed! The current explosions are not even a bad joke. They dont belong in this century. I cant decide to laugh or cry every time I see an explosion effect in Arma 3.

The Bipod/resting system needs a look at regarding hills. While its totally agreeable that you shouldnt be able to shoot in a high angle and still have a resting position it appears that the angle you still have resting is far to low. At certain areas you can only aim at a negative angle (therefore aiming at the ground) when you want to have weapon resting. Greetings

The miniguns are not aligned AT ALL. Not at any distance. on top of that there is no visible dispersion on the guns.

Heres another comparisson shot. And an update on the Altis situation. As Vanzant tested out even on Altis this kind of resolution is possible without a noticeable frameratedrop. That means I will most likely do sth like this for Altis too. On the other hand Altis is such a huge environment that it would take month to recreate. Therefore I would ask you guys for areas of interest which I could work on. This way more populated environments could be improved first and set into usage. Greetings -

Kamysh: Theres this "shhh" sound that gets higher when driving faster. It stops abrupt if you change the direction. It works fine on the other vehicles. SDAR (weapon): 3 round burst is broken Greetz Ps: When will we see new supressor sounds and different sounds when in buildings?=) (if its implemented then it doesnt work with dev build on stratis) -

@LordJarhead On the ground the explosions sound all right but pls try how they sound out of the air. I think you will agree that it gets more clear why the explosions cant be seen as finished while flying. Best regards -

Reskinning the island will take AGES at least the way we have to do it at the moment. The system I suggested would however solve the problem much much faster. -

Guys dont freak out on that screens^^ As I said - its only one texture set of 21 that are coming. And yes I will put in shadows for trees but only after the basic terrain is set. And@Googlava Thanks for your answer! Well....its been nearly 6 month now since I first introduced my system...I hope your programmers and projet leaders see that its not a good idea to release a game with such midrange textures. Its the main engagement range and it will stick to plps heads. Thanks for your effort! I will remember this. -

Mh then maybe its just me? Maybe it has sth to with my configuration but the explosions sound by far less optimized than the weapon sounds. Especially the rocket pod sounds are way off for me=/ Weapon sounds = great but explosions not so much=/ I am sure however that they will be great in the final release. Just giving feedback -

Thanks for your feedback guys! The final results will of course be much more polished. The current texture is created for an area near the south watchtower. However it is greatly work in progress and I have allready altered a fourth of it. For example the houses and the camp near the watchtower now fit better in and much more. @wiresnake regarding concealment: For the concealment test I use my own midrange textureset. It gives much more crisp details - but you have to decide for yourself if you like it or not. Try it out if you want And @all. There is however a gamebreaking bug. The one I posted furiously some days earlier. If you play with a big scope the game happens to scale down the texture size of the map and wont increase it anymore. This however is a bug. But I am not very keen on BIS fixing this since "its only this mod" which is affected....so either you create some pressure on them or nothing. I am used to give feedback for games since years now and I am sick of gamebreaking bugs and stuff that clearly is not thought out at all. (When I think of the current effects we have I allready want to stop modding the game) And I am slowly loosing the energy to keep on fighting for improvements. If some guys of you play BF3 you may have noticed that soldiers would get invisible over a certain range It was me who fought to get this improved. "it only took 5month to do so".... Well I am sick of stuff like this. This mod for example gives 16 times the detail we currently have with (as you experienced) no really noticeable performance hit. Yet it gets destroyed by a bug that maybe will not get fixed. You cannot imagine how frustrating this is for me.........
