Well you could get rudder pedals or a joystick with rudder control like the Logitech Extreme 3D Pro. Sounds expensive but it's only $30.

I think autostart should be like autotrim. Only available in lower difficulties. And it's not hard to start a helicopter on here, even if you are drunk xD

Preview crash on exit - please help
Braindrool replied to OMAC's topic in TAKE ON HELICOPTERS - COMMUNITY PREVIEW
I've only crashed once in the preview, and it was a blue screen. First time I've had a bluescreen and I've had this computer for about 7 months. But I haven't had any more problems with it. By the way, you said your view distance was only 7km, I'm assuming because of FPS issues. Disable vsync then max it out :) -
Well in the E3 2011 trailer they did some low level flying, could be cinematic, maybe not, but it still happened :) JxLOCHrvoQI p.s. Thanks zipper for fixing video

I don't think APU is even in the light helicopter's cockpit (looking at the switches). You're probably right about larger helicopters. By the way if you listen to some of the interviews they've done they've given information about the helicopters that the site doesn't have. First of all they had benches on the side of the light helicopter (probably a customization option). But I think they said each weight class had 3 helicopters and 1 military helicopter (total or just for the class I don't know)

I noticed something today with the 5th community preview update, they added APU shortcut to the controls layout, but the light helicopter in preview can only access battery. Perhaps we'll be able to use either in the full game? :)

Well it still is in beta, but how I see it is that it's a helicopter simulator, emphasis on simulator. I think realism should be key, and yes I think flight dynamics are a big part of it. And I'm impressed with the mapping, it's about 1/2 detail of Arma 2 graphics, but that is still quite a bit more than FSX and not sure about DCS / X-plane.

Manual startup procedure ?
Braindrool replied to OMAC's topic in TAKE ON HELICOPTERS - COMMUNITY PREVIEW
Well I'm just into helicopters, not a pilot (yet :D). But from what I know that while using the starter and adding fuel before %12 damages the engine, while later than %15 damages the starter, same as if the starter runs more than 60 seconds (which was in last update.) Also if a start is aborted, you should wait 60 seconds, if 2nd is aborted, wait 60 seconds, if the 3rd is aborted you should wait 30 minutes and try to find the problem. I've heard that if an engine is damaged from that you must pay to have the engine removed, taken apart, examined, and repaired if possible. Also people advise that you shut off all electronics / avionics before starting as you should give the starter as much power as needed or it might not reach it's potential. I hope the devs consider this and thanks for the reply :). Also I started a thread similiar to this one a while ago in the other TKOH forum section, feel free to post. -
Manual startup procedure ?
Braindrool replied to OMAC's topic in TAKE ON HELICOPTERS - COMMUNITY PREVIEW
Well I know it's just a game / sim. But I believe they said the heli in preview is based on the MD520. And I know for that the MD500 (different I know, but similiar probably) excluding preflight checks and since there are no hotstarts / cold starts or anything. All you need to do is Start battery, turn on starter, once you reach 12-15% RPM (Auto Start brings it to 20%, so I suppose that's alright) set throttle to idle. Once RPM reaches 58% (marked on lower right guage as red line) shut off starter. Watch the TOT (Turbine Outlet Temperature) and wait for it to warm up, cool down a bit, should be steady and not moving. Then set throttle to max. Alternatively you could look at Engine Oil Temperature, it should rise, slowly lower, then steady. Once you're on max throttle wait for RPM to go in the green zone on gauge, and you're set to fly. -
I've never played FSX, but I saw hovercontrol has some nice mods for it. And I watched some videos of the start up. Looks very impressive. And for the people viewing this thread feel free to post, I want to see your opinions too.

I'm interested in that too :D But is there a way to get TKOH Preview to run on Combined Ops? I have Arma 2 and Arma OA so I get free CO, but is there a way to get the preview working on it that way? I've tried and just end up crashing the game. EDIT: Thanks to PvPscene for his helpful post. Can now run it with CO :D

I agree about wanting to see this ingame. Hope the Devs consider it carefully :D

I think I should clear this up before I go further that I'm not complaining and I love the Community Preview so far, but my question (part suggestion?) is about the startup sequence. Could someone tell me if TKOH is going for the realism? Or more of a user friendly game. I admit the startup is more than most games would have, but will it be even more realistic? E.g. Hot / Cold starts, having to monitor the amps on battery start, etc? I love the game so far and have been playing the preview every day (It's addicting, isn't it?) and the flight dynamics seem great, but I think it just lacks a bit on starting it.

I think you misunderstood my post. -

So I should just get used to constant yaw / uneven flight?
