New research suggests that antibiotics could be potent anti-cancer agents
orcinus posted a topic in OFFTOPIC
A group at the Breakthrough Breast Cancer unit at Manchester U. have just published a paper in the open-access journal Oncotarget which shows that some common antibiotics have potent anti-cancer activity across a range of cell lines, but little or no toxicity to normal cells even at levels 10x higher than used to get up to 95% reduction of tumour cells. The head of the unit, Prof Michael Lisanti, has been studying the role of mitochondria in cancer growth and metastasis. Mitochondria are small, rod-shaped organelles that oxidise sugars to CO2 while capturing the energy released in a small molecule, ATP. His group have shown that at least some cancer cells 'hijack' energy production for neighbouring cells such as fibroblasts. Mitochondria were once bacteria, so are susceptible to inhibition by antibiotics that target ribosomes (small structures that assemble amino acids into protein as they move along mRNA strands). I shall be watching developments; amongst the potential targets are pancreatic cancer, lung cancer, and melanomas, all of which have a very poor prognosis. Idea for the research came from Prof Lisanti & his wife discussing treating cancer cells with their 8-year old daughter Lisa, who said she would use antibiotics 'like she did for a sore throat'. From his extensive work on the role of mitochondria in cancer cells, Prof Lisanti realised that antibiotics that target mitochondrial protein synthesis might have a useful effect, and so it turned out. The antibiotics tested are all widely used for infections and generally very safe. First time I have seen a scientific paper with an 8-year old amongst the authors! -
I'm sure most people will have heard about the appalling goings-on at HSBC (again...). There's a campaign just launched on Avaaz today that's already approaching 300K signatures calling on the UK and US governments to bring criminal charges against the bankers involved and those individals who have evaded tax. HSBC was fined USD1.9 billion for money-laundering on behalf of serially mass-murdering psychopathic Mexican drug lords. No-one went to jail nor even fined. The tab was picked up by the shareholders - including our pension providers (though as with other fines, e.g. Libor fixing, eventually it will be ordinary customers who pay it in increased charges/lower interest). Fines paid by others are not going to deter the sociopaths who think their right to huge bonuses excuses criminal misconduct on behalf of other criminals. The Guardian has several pages detailing how HSBC knowingly assisted a variety of criminals from around the world - they actually went out and recruited those people as clients. https://secure.avaaz.org/en/uk_hsbc_tax_dodge_/?tyOPgib Please sign.

The Unsung Vietnam Mod 3.0 WIP THREAD
orcinus replied to sgt_savage's topic in ARMA 3 - ADDONS & MODS: DISCUSSION
You bought a real grenade and announced it in the Internet?? Hmm.. the good news is that the model should be excellent. The bad news is that a bunch of large men from Hereford, dressed in black with silenced HK MP5s, will be arriving through your windows any time now. I can't watch -
The Unsung Vietnam War Mod 3.0E - Echo Released !!!
orcinus replied to sgt_savage's topic in ARMA 3 - ADDONS & MODS: COMPLETE
Whoo! Thanks for the heads-up :) Hmm, bet it doesn't run on my outdated version (don't ask; I have to watch my BP). -
This isn't the best place to post this. much better in the specific forum for terrain building. Lots of very talented people; as in general with people working on mods & addons, etc., adressed politely and respectfully they can give you lots of advice and guidance. Good luck with your terrain; the community remains the most brilliant aspect of the ArmA series. Where is is set?

DAC V3.1 (Dynamic-AI-Creator) released
orcinus replied to silola's topic in ARMA 3 - ADDONS & MODS: COMPLETE
Small reminder - making DAC configs from lists of classnames or mission files is huge waste of time, If you don't already have it, get gienkov's splendid ACC DAC toolbox from Armaholic. Link and brief outline here. -
The Unsung Vietnam War Mod 3.0E - Echo Released !!!
orcinus replied to sgt_savage's topic in ARMA 3 - ADDONS & MODS: COMPLETE
Brilliant! Well done all the team. I'm sure it will maintain or surpass the outstanding quality of previous releases. Looking forward to playing UNSUNG Echo... sometime (don't ask). -
The Steam client. Completes an update of workshop items then re-downloads all suscribed items again as duplicate files. And again... 86GB each time. Makes a mess of the file structure as well. According to a BI dev it's been bugged for a long time. Steam's response was to blame modmakers. Bah! Humbug!

@spunfin Great stuff! Until the STEAMing pile of **** broke my game I was having fun designing an SP 'military career' mission for UNSUNG, slowly due to RL issues. If I ever get the fkup sorted out I'll get back to it with the updated pack. Many thanks for your fine work

RHS Escalation (AFRF and USAF)
orcinus replied to soul_assassin's topic in ARMA 3 - ADDONS & MODS: COMPLETE
Even easier is to use gienkov's really excellent ACC DAC Toolbox - some simple-to-use scripts that generate classnames for units, helis, wheeled vehicles, and tracked vehicles. Place the desired subset on a map & run the scripts, get classnames in a format immediately usable in DAC 3 or spunFin's AISSP, etc. To get weapon & kit classnames, name a unit on the map & run the "getWeapons.sqf" script. In each instance the output is copied to the clipboard. I've always pasted into an sqf file in Notepad ++ so it's ready to use. Just save that file as .txt to get both file formats. Still need to pull plane & static info from the mission, but there are generally fewer items than for units, vehicles and weapons. I made a complete set fo CUP last year, took me about 2 - 3 hours - so much easier than copying & pasting all those lines from the mission file. Cheers, gienkov!- 16550 replies

Umm, there just might be some copyright issues here... Seriously, given the CoD kiddies and their like uploading ArmA mod-makers IP to any site they choose, isn't it a pretty shit idea to start uploading CoD content? I am obviously assuming you don't have Activision's permission to use their content; please do correct me if that is not the case - and prvide proof, naturally.

Sure, one must absolutely respect the stated wishes of other content creators. The magical thing here is that so many people share so openly :)

The 'standard' ArmA formations do not reflect best-practice military protocols. Where is the 'box' formation? Where is the 'all-round defense' as developed by UK forces? I have some preliminary alternate formations, but a combination of illness and the broken STEAM client preclude any early completion. 1

Thank you for the update, Sparfell. Oh, and I promise devoutly not to mirror it :P

I have never come across any forum, in any field, where there is so much co-operation and exchange of what is, frequently, commercially-valuable content. Kudos to the ArmA mod community :)

Community Upgrade Project - CUP Terrains
orcinus replied to CUP's topic in ARMA 3 - ADDONS & MODS: COMPLETE
Good. In future. if you/others are able to post probable version numbers, I may be able to help since because the STEAMing pile of **** client has rendered my game effectively unplayable I am currently re-installing Acronis backups (so far to no avail). -
The Unsung Vietnam Mod 3.0 WIP THREAD
orcinus replied to sgt_savage's topic in ARMA 3 - ADDONS & MODS: DISCUSSION
Ouch! :P <bg> I never have had cause not to be impressed by the UNSUNG team's work; and quite contrary to what I would have expected, this has become one of the prime reasons for my continuing interest in ArmA despite the STEAMing pile of **** and some serious ill-health. Why?: I never had much interest in the VN war as a game (other than Vietcong 1) since I always, from kidhood, regarded the war as the result of appalling American ignorance and stupidity... Before the US cretinous 'patriots no matter what' tendency clog the thread, I should add that the Brits' WWII decision to release Jap POWs to suppress Vietnamese attempts to rid themelves of French colonialists - despite the appallingly brutal Japanese record in SEA - has never ceased to disgust me. Churchill may have been a useful figurehead in the fight against Hitler, but in most aspects of his life, by modern standards he was a far-right narcissist, whose excess of ego over competence led to many deaths (e.g., Gallipoli). Bravo Harold Wilson for so astutely keeping the UK out of one of the US' most predictable fuckups. /end personal take on history -
Hee! The more the merrier as far as AI-enhancement mods are concerned. Cheers Orc

Wow, a long list of major changes. Thank you, Rob - ASR_AI has been, and remains, my #1 AI mod pretty much since the first version despite some fairly stiff competition. I very much appreciate your commitment to long-term support. I look forward to seeing. and contributing to. your PayPal pension supplement fund :P

With absolutely zero reference to any recent post/poster, I want to thank the CUP team for an incredible amount of hard work that has produced a mountain of wonderful content. The occasional glitch that might have sneaked through is trivial compared with the outstanding overall quality of their (entirely voluntary!) output. Who would have dreamt that not only would there not be a huge hole where BIS' brilliant Chernarus terrain once reigned supreme, but several versions for A3? Many thanks, CUP team. I wish I had a shred of your competence. (If I can ever stop the STEAMing puddle of poo from endlessly duplicating each and every workshop mod download, maybe I can enjoy playing the latest updates...)

You will be missed, Sav. Under your leadership UNSUNG has become an oustanding mod for ArmA, and an inspiration for many other contributors. Please don't disappear! Your experience, knowledge, common sense, and common decency are resources the ArmA community will surely benefit from in future. Very best wishes Orc
