Gamespot Reader's Choice, vote for ARMA 3
Aussie_Osiris replied to jakerod's topic in ARMA 3 - GENERAL
There are plenty of thick forest canopy's in ARMA II. And you don't need to be in a forest to see sun shafts. Though I do agree that bloom is used far to extensively in games. Although concrete can seem bright if you've been in the dark or dim light I don't think concrete has ever bloomed when I've been outside for a minute or more. And yeah I've never seen a good example of teamwork and tactics in CoD. It's probably the reason why I'm so put off by it. I guess I could have won Best Implantation of User Content, but isn't it still a popularity contest? And far more people are familiar with SC2 than ARMA II -

Yes ARMA should win Best Tactical Shooter. But don't belittle the tactics in Battlefield. A team that can actually work together in that game is almost unstoppable -

I don't know why people have such a hard time in finding female gamers in hardcore fps. I come across at least 1 in every match of BF2, UT, TF2, CS and Killing Floor I play. Although I only play ARMA II with a few friends and not in clan and I don't play CoD cause it's not my kind of fps, I know plenty of women who do play CoD and are really quite good at it. -

Some facts from The Entertainment Software Association (ESA) The average game player is 37 years old and has been playing games for 12 years. The average age of the most frequent game purchaser is 41 years old. Forty-two percent of all game players are women. In fact, women over the age of 18 represent a significantly greater portion of the game-playing population (37 percent) than boys age 17 or younger (13 percent). Also be mindful that DirectX 10/11 is a much more efficient API than DirectX 9. It uses a lot less CPU power when the game is coded correctly for it so it is possible that ARMA III could in fact run better on the same PC than ARMA II

keep in mind that the minimum specs they've released for ARMA 3 costs you about $300-$500 to build from scratch TODAY and by the time the game comes out the minimum spec computer will be really cheap EDIT: I've actually found the parts and made a complete system minus the case Motherboard ----- $ 88 Intel i5 CPU ------ $189 AMD 5770 -------- $119 2GB DDR3 RAM -- $ 24 500GB HDD ------ $ 37 Win 7 64-bit ------ $ 96 _____________________ TOTAL ------------ $553 _____________________ IF EXCLUDE HDD & OS _____________________ TOTAL ------------ $420 _____________________ Although these prices are in Aussie dollar the parts are usually about the same or cheaper on amazon (Prices taken from http://www.umart.com.au/) EDIT: Also note that an AMD processor and board are usually cheaper than their Intel counterpart

ARMA 3 Engine Handling of Objects at Range

It looks like in those images the shadow map resolution is significantly deceased. I don't know what the default "close" shadow map resolution so I couldn't give you a guesstimate. -
Will bullet be able to penetrate multi-person or corpes be shot again?
Aussie_Osiris replied to msy's topic in ARMA 3 - GENERAL
As body armour (armor for Americans) is designed to spread out the force and try to remove it. I'd like to see a double penetration actually being possible going through 3 layers (entry, exit, entry) of armour and flesh -

I doubt that they'll change the dead body physical properties from ARMA 2. The amount of times a dead body has saved me from fire and provided better cover in an open area I do not know -
Considering BI are trying to get more people to buy this game by trying to appeal more mass market and the fact that the core of the game is already working quite well. They have a lot of time to iron out the game breaking bugs and fix the smaller one as well so.... hopefully all the best to BI and them releasing the game that they want to release.

Customizable Soldier Load ( seriously?? )
Aussie_Osiris replied to sagitarius_2k's topic in ARMA 3 - GENERAL
Yes. DirectX 11 made the API multi-threaded. And the good news is that it's backwards compatible. If you have a DirectX 10 card it just limits you from using those features while still being able to use the multi-threaded API and other performance benefits that affect the API :D -

Aussie_Osiris replied to sagitarius_2k's topic in ARMA 3 - GENERAL
Yeah. It was the start of Microsoft actually getting feedback from a community (the game developers and hardware manufacturers) to make their product better. It's also the reason why if BI made ARMA II DirectX 10/11 and properly programmed it for that API it would us faaaaaar less CPU just because DirectX 9 liked to get all that CPU ass for itself -
pointless thread is pointless

FYI for changing textures on uniforms. DirectX 10/11 has the ability to have the same model with a completely different texture and use significantly less RAM then DirectX 9 did so if BI do let you choose your uniform there will be a very minor RAM usage even if you had 50 different uniform textures on the same model. -
Check out the Unreal Engine Samaritan demo ( ). It's real time but it's run on a tri-SLI setup. Tim Sweeney knows how to make a damn good engine, that's for sure

I use my left hand in the 22 and 303 that we use when hunting pigs and roos but when I was able to use a M107 I found it more comfortable to use my right hand. Maybe it has to do with the better dexterity I have in my right arm but I honestly have no idea why it is. I'm right handed btw

They said that some forces from ARMA II will be present didn't they. But even still they could just have the opposing army be invading somewhere else and have the Aus forces be apart of it. Since war isn't about sheer numbers anymore (well sheer numbers do help) they could easily what the opposing arma trying to take some other place for tactical reasons. -
Sorta right about that, but I don't know exactly how it's done in games. In CGI they render millions of tiny 3D particles with refractions of light and casting shadows. Dust in games are usually just 2D bitmaps with animation layered over to give the fairly convincing illusion of dust/smoke/ect
-
With the although different and I couldn't see any examples in the videos I'd say that they would have it in
-
It's not so much physics but it just helps the game render particles better and also assists with half a dust cloud suddenly appearing through a wall
-
Isn't that sorta what he says. That depending on the shape it will create different values of lift? Correct me if I'm wrong but that's what I gathered from what he said EDIT: Arrrgh this thread is moving too fast :S
-
I'm pretty sure that this can be done on the CPU. (trying to think of how to explain this to people who don't understand game engines, sorry if it's difficult to understand) But instead of individual particles you could just have the physics applied to the group of particles which the game would have displayed as a decently large single puff of smoke/dust/whatever. I'm going to put up a thread on how DirectX 10/11 effects stuff but I'll say this in here. DirectX 10/11 can give you priority over particles in what they display over. To avoid particles clipping through objects Here is a perfect example to help my explanation Bioshock DirectX 9/10 comparison Notice how those particles don't clip the object. That's what I'm getting at

Also wouldn't it make sense for Australia to be apart of this conflict in ARMA III? You know being such a large part of the commonwealth empire -
Yes. Weight is irrelevant. First thing my teacher said in high school basic science. Stuck with me ever since. Then there were a whole bunch of complex algorithms and stuff but I understand physics on a basic level :D

Having the major military's that usually have some presence in most of the worlds bigger conflicts. So who is that... USA, the UK, Aus, errrr..... (some help would be appreciated :)) EDIT: Don't really follow the news so I don't really know who has how big of a presence in the conflicts
