When I originally bought ARMA 2, I believed there maps w/ enemies and there were no real objectives. (In other words, not a campaign/mission, but a sandbox mode).Maybe something like a sandbox mode, but I can request missions from a commander, I guess.
Is there a sandbox mode/something close to it with randomly generates enemies and the such? Or is there something like it?
If you want quick random mini missions do the following;
Go into the Editor, choose a map/island, place your squad on the island, add a ‘Ambient Combat’ module on the map and also a ‘Sec-op Manager’ module, synchronise the modules to your team leader (yourself, if your in charge) to sync, if your not use to it, just click Synchronise in the right hand menu then click your team leader holding down the button and drag a line to the module do this twice one to each module, no need to do anything else, just start your mission and see what happens….
This will give you random mini type missions and a random mix of intermittent combat whilst your going about the mini missions. A great way to get use to things, after a while you can alter the ambient combat by choosing which side you would like to appear if you do not want all sides, plus what type of units you would like to appear etc, good way to start to learn and have quick missions.
Note: Use the slider bars in both modules windows to alter the ‘Probability of Presence’ full bar there will be plenty of action, low bar very little, a little over mid way is good to begin with until your use to it…
There are plenty of other things you can do but start there and see if its what your looking for….
When you get into the mission find cover and go into your map and see notes, this will explain a little regards the sec-op manager…
To accept or decline a random mission when its offered, press; space bar, click communication, then sec op, then search/trap or whatever the mission is, then accept or decline...check your map for details of the mission….keep your eye’s pealed as the Ambient combat can deliver some surprises by way of foot solders, motorised or air attack…
Don’t know if its what your looking for but if it is, Have fun...

Not seen this island before just seems to have popped up on SU.
Having drove around Spritz Island with its lovely scenery, great views, naval base, airport etc seems a very nice island to add to a growing collection. Particularly like the small beech at the ship wreck, a little south of Mira Bay, great spot for a picnic, must be why there are bus stops on the way down, must be quite a tourist attraction for the locals….
Lots of places of interest for mission making which is very nice, and as someone has already said, great places for small skirmish type, in & out missions….

Looks great...

Try the ‘DVD’ (Dynamic View Distance) mod, might help control your fps via auto dropping your view distance…
Give it a go, might help..

arma 2 with 3 projectorsWay too distorted….would be great if they could sort that out..

I don’t play online at all, but I think the first thing I would do if I wanted too is take a look on youtube to see which type of Arma2 MP I like, then get in-touch with that group via their links. There is an awful lot of Arma2 game-play on youtube and its all coming from online MP….
Some of the groups are really good and use correct tactics, this would be great for a mature player or younger player with a mature attitude...

I use ‘DVD’ 'Dynamic View Distance' mod, it handles the view distance and fps very well but takes a little time to get use to it. Playing Arma2 you have to think real world, nobody will see someone in any detail that’s off into the distance, the idea is to prepare for that i.e. optical help via binoculars, scopes, rangefinder etc. The dvd mod gives extra view distance and fps when using scopes so even if your 1000mtrs away and spot someone, it will give you upto 3500 or more (depending on your system) when using your optics. Lets be honest in real world your not going to engage something if you can’t see it more clearly, that’s what optics are there for, use them…
I have my view distance set to the highest in the game 10000 but know full well that the dvd mod is going to control that for me, so with my system I get between 3000-5500 max view distance with good fps, it will give me more view distance and fps when flying or combat in desert type terrain maps, but in terrain that is cluttered with over 80 ai on the map your going to loose view distance via the dvd mod because it has to make up for the fps loss which you will also have but reduced to a level that is still very playable. Also the dvd mod stops a lot of the lag when there's heavy combat and provides smoother play albeit by reducing your view distance a little, but will tend to only do so if its close combat, it will also work out your fps when travelling fast through wooded areas or very built up towns etc and adjust your view distance to keep your fps up....
You will get good view distances and fps providing your system is configured well.
Just think real world tactics, be prepared, also try out the ‘dvd’ mod, see if it works for you….it also gives you the hud setup so you can view your stats i.e. view distance and fps whilst playing, which is very handy...

HR4, when we change the resolution with a triple-monitor setup, we also change the field of view; the game renders a picture over a much wider field of view, so in answer to your question, yes, the game can render what you call "peripheral view" as peripheral view is just a different way of saying "the things we see on the wider extremes of our field-of-view."It's not the sort of thing that is "built-in" to a game; every game renders a picture with a particular field of view, and that field of view is determined somewhere in code, and so it is a fundamental property of three-dimensional game environments the "peripheral vision" can be rendered; you just change the field of view.
Thank you for that reply, its beginning to sink in now...its very interesting, is it possible to have a wraparound view then ?

Using a bigger screen don't do anything else than give you a bigger picture. You still have 1920x1080 resolution, so the information on the screen is exactly the same on a 20 inch monitor as a 102 inch TV.
With 3 screens you will have three times the field of view, 5760 pixels in width x 1080 height.
OK, ‘just resolution for more detail’, only have 1920x1080 on my little 22†but there seems to be plenty of detail there, if you were to turn to three screen set-up would the breaks (between monitors) become un-noticeable over time...
Interesting this as it may be a pos for me further down the road if I get the space to do it and the wife lets me...

I sat with a 42" 1080p tv the same distance as my three monitors but it still deosn't compare, it is all about the resolution.Explain.. I’m interested…is it for the peripheral view that its important, however you will only ever see the forward view, would you not. How could you ever see the peripheral view unless they build it into the sim/game..or is it already in there..

I apologies in advance ‘Sakura_Chan’ as I am no computer wiz in-fact the complete opposite. The ideas you have are great, question is why are you not working for BIS, some of these ideas would be great for Arma3. The AI to keep driving after being shot at is a must, some of the AI seem to enjoy dying. Still looking forward to all your ideas, just wish I had some of my own:j:,
Would they all be available as mods to download from Six Updater ?
DMarkwick.. I like the radial idea, if used with Arma2 or 3 would help simplify the order structure..
All have great ideas, do we really need Arma3....

For me, I have a Razer Nostromo to my left, keyboard in the middle and Rat5 to my right.. if only I could find the right button’s.....:j:

One large 40†screen and sit 6ft away from it if you can’t get the multi thing working, should feel pretty real then I would have thought..could give you a headache tho…
Sorry I would like to help but don’t know anything about it...having just the one 22†monitor, I sit right in front of that and when the action begins it seems pretty absorbing to me, even with that.

I can see where ‘BeerHunter’ is coming from, as a non mod maker myself it does seem like people are giving away lots of hours of work for nothing. However you sell it and your retailing in essence and that means back up and the rest.
‘Sickboy’ said donations which I think is a good idea, however, mod makers don’t seem to want anything.
So why not an 'Arma2 Community Charity Collection Fund', whereas all donations are sent centrally to a moderator or anyone put forward who would do it, then they send the money collected over the year to help the forces. We ‘play’ war with this sim/game and for most of us, now, without the ‘consequences of war’, some on here are in the forces and play this game and face the consequences for real, they would know how any money raised would be appreciated by the forces charities. Maybe any on here who are in the forces should be put forward as treasurer to disburse any money collected to the charities, should there be more than one, i.e. UK, USA, GER, AUS etc, etc) divide the money. It may not add upto much but I would be happy to give £5 for every mod I use over the year, which in my case would be around £300, now don’t all shout ‘NO WAY’ just give what you can when you can, if you decide £1 is enough for each mod then give a pound for each mod, just make sure its in by the year end deadline for it to be given out to whichever charities.
A start date and treasurer is all that’s needed, then any mod’s used after the start date (or it could be backdated) that are downloaded by a user should be accompanied with a promise to donate note on here, then they can pay when they have it or split payments over the year. The totals can be listed in a thread as it goes along throughout the year...
Just a thought...

the CTI games are awesome, but It only lets me chose to be a squad leader for lan games I make (I dont want to really go play with other people and lag)Is there a mod or something that i can do that will allow me to fly the planes/helis as a squad leader? or allow me to take over my squad peeps and be them so I can be a pilot I hire?
I like having AI in the game again cause im not gonna be playing with people
Is there such a thing?
Thanks Guys <3
Don’t quite understand your question..
Are you making missions in the editor and want to occasionally play as other members of your team whilst you fly around ordering them to do things ?
Also you do not have to be the squad leader all the time, work within a AI controlled team as a junior member
All this is available in the mission editor, you don’t need a mod for that
Can you elaborate on your question a little..

every day a new "favorite AI" thread...guys please use forum search and there is even a sticky for this
Sorry.. I didn't start it:o
But GL4 is good..;)
-
You should have seen some threads in the past!Oh dear…
But I don't think that because some people disagree on some things that it's not a community anymore."A community that isn’t a community…."
View it as a rhetorical question..
For the most part I see this particular discussion as a step forward.Step forward ‘no’.. Step back ‘yes’..
You have just said it, if this question is forever argued then forward movement is impossible.
Humankind has argued about this and that for ever, until a settlement or consensus is arrived at then arguments and indeed mud slinging just goes around in circles, a step forward, well ...
Argue amongst yourselves, I’m a definite out on this, mainly because I am not a mod maker. The right to protect your creation is without doubt a very important right, instigating that right however is very hard and sometimes almost impossible….good luck..

I used GL4 with Zeus but dropped the Zeus and now use GL4 on its own it seems to do the job quite well, they search buildings, use high positions on buildings where pos, use flanking manoeuvres, use cover well and rearm when needed, if they can.
I feel maybe I should put them in charge...

Well, well, being fairly new to this forum, (only a matter of months), this is about as bad as it gets. A community that isn’t a community…
I use many mod’s and thank the mod makers for their hard work and generosity in allowing me to use the mod. They create it, they can restrict or put conditions for its use, most definitely it’s an intellectual right.
But to see this thread, well its saddening, a community blown apart by individual ego’s…
Don’t ask me for proof just have to read this thread...

OK, navigate to C:\users\your username\my documents\arma2\open up the file that is named your username in a text editor such as notepad. If there are two files there with your username as their name, do this for both of them.
scroll down to the bottom of the file. See the lines that say FOV top and FOV left.
the number next to FOV left should be close to 5.3333 times the number next to FOV top.
So if FOV top is 0.75, as is default for arma 2, then FOV left should be exactly 4.
In summary, set FOV top to 0.75 and FOV left to 4. If it is already at those values, then this isn't your problem.
Edit:The fact that you're playing at 5760X1080 tells me you haven't setup bezel correction. In AMD catalyst, go to your display group, right click it, and find the bezel correction setup.
I too am pretty computer illiterate as well so I’m always asking the PC wizz who built my PC, sometimes he tells me what I need to do and it all seems way too technical. Now this answer even I could follow, not that I need it as I don ‘t have multi screens, however just saying well done for a great answer explained without any PC snobbery or satire but purely to help, even if it doesn't sort out the problem, great way to answer:)
Shame there are only a very few on here that answer this way...

I run the Radeon Sapphire HD5850 2GB Toxic which is OC’d to the spec shown below. Now OC’d this is a fast card and with around 50-60 AI infantry and a few heli’s plus myself its running around 45-55fps average, I have a 60Hz monitor which I have been told could be holding the average back a little as I run it with v-sync enabled which means it will not run above 60fps. However I am not saying think about this card but think about the card that I am thinking of getting later this year which is the Sapphire HD6990 which is supposed to be the fastest card out there. Who knows if it will run Arma2 or 3 at the speeds we would all like, but going on the way the Toxic handles (OC’d) the HD6990 must really be a quick card with fps to suit I would imagine.
Is anyone running the Sapphire HD6990 ? If so how does it perform ?
I would very much like to know...

I had my current sim/game PC built to run Arma2, which it does very well to the level I wanted, the only things on the PC are Windows 7 64bit and Arma2 plus related Arma2 mods etc, I do not use the PC for anything else. The next will be built to run Arma3 to the same level with the same thing in mind, but only when the first 6mths or so have passed post release, I’m a little worried it may be heading down a mass appeal audience route, whilst great news for BI, and they do deserve recognition mass appeal wise, for me this could take out the reason I wanted Arma2 so much, just hope I’m wrong, mass appeal and unique greatness is very hard to mix together.
There again provided its got a mission editor, I will no doubt be buying it and the PC to run it..
‘Arma3’ only trouble is, it has big boots to fill, but will it fill them…..I for one certainly hope so.
