It's $2.6 Billion over 8 years - 6 of those years have already passed with $1.8 Billion of the budget expended on development and launch, if it continues work after it's remaining 2 years that will cost extra but nowhere near $8 Billion. To give you some idea, the 10 years of mission extensions to both previous Mars Rovers have cost $124 million. Sorry - the $8 Billion you made up, is just nonsense. Lol at the East India Company discovering the Americas, it was founded over a century after to trade exclusively on a different continent........the clue is in the name.

Ummmm I thought it was $2.6 billion? That's $2.6 billion over the course of nearly 8 years. That's about $325 million a year. The amount of money spent on Curiosity's development, flight, and two year mission is the amount of money that the US Department of Defense spends every 36 hours. There are lots of journalists asking "is it worth it?". That's because they don't understand the science or the engineering or it's importance and find it boring. Space science has thousands of spin offs that benefit everyone, every day. http://www.nasa.gov/50th/50th_magazine/benefits.html

@Seitan - try the ATOC settings as well. It looks bad with them disabled. It will not solve the problem but it makes it less obvious.

ROE = visual range exercise with 1v1 merge combat. Typhoon would probably win most of the time under those circumstances. Is that a full and correct assessment of how the F-22 would fight a real war? The F22's strength is supposed to be in the high altitude BVR arena. I guess in real life it's a question of how survivable the Typhoon is in BVR combat as in theory the F22 will usually be able to fire 1st, if it survives, can the F22 be engaged with the MBDA Meteor missile which is superior to even the AIM-120D in performance, provided the F-22 can be detected in time? The Typhoon is estimated to have a frontal RCS of 0.75sq m in clean config Vs Raptors 0.0001 sq m. These engagements are often a game of chicken as you have to fire, then turn away to avoid running into your opponents missiles which changes the RCS. There are other factors such as mid course guidance for missiles being provided by datalink from other aircraft such as AWACS. It's a very complex debate as there are so many things to consider.

Yes find some good instructions and make sure you know what you are doing, insulate properly and prevent any wire chafe on sharp edges. Make sure all metal scraps are removed and the case has enough ventillation. You could end up electrocuting yourself or frying somevery expensive equipment. Apart from that the biggest hazard are the power tools used to cut out the metal, I have cut fingers to the bone 2x doing similar things, take care and wear eye protection, it's easy to rush or cut corners and then lose fingers or worse. It's probably not something you can get done in 1 weekend. -
NASA's Curiosity rover and its parachute were spotted by NASA's Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter as Curiosity descended to the surface on Aug. 5 PDT (Aug. 6 EDT). The High-Resolution Imaging Science Experiment (HiRISE) camera captured this image of Curiosity while the orbiter was listening to transmissions from the rover. Credit: NASA A friend bought Mars bars for everyone on his office floor to celebrate the event. By lunchtime he tells me he also had to send a group email to quash the rumour that astronauts had landed on the planet Mars. FPDR

Lol ,myself, friends and family have used some of the health care services you mention - they are far better. Some have even remarked that despite missing friends and family they would not move back to the UK because they don't like the staff, long waiting lists and constant battling to get basic treatment on the NHS. Those are facts. I am often stunned that once diagnosed they usually get treatment within 14 days, more often than not the same week. As for A&E in SA, the wife was stung by either a scorpion or spider one night while sitting around the BBQ fire in the Hluhluwe-Imfolozi Game Reserve. Her leg was badly swollen by the next morning so we decided to seek medical help. Compared to the UK it was great, seen and treated in 45 mins, and they booked a follow up to fit in with our itinerary. The cost of the consultations and medicines was so cheap I didn't even bother to file an insurance claim. The biggest thing you notice is that you are treated with some civility and good manners, the NHS only manage that when there is a camera crew around.
-
The difference is in other health care systems if you are not satisfied with your treatment you go elsewhere. With the NHS they can treat you like dirt and get away with it because you have no alternative. I would prefer the ability to take my National Insurance and obtain care where I choose. I have lived in several different countries Prydain and seen health care from both sides, the NHS is not the utopia you think it is. The lack of choice and the attitude of the staff is driving serious and widespread problems. I actually envy my dog, when I take him to the vet he gets a better standard of care and is treated with more dignity than I ever have in an NHS hospital. Why? the vets know I can take my money elsewhere if I am not satisfied. Labour is funded by the unions, the NHS is just 1 huge cash cow for them, hence the continued effort to make it untouchable, any criticism is heresy etc. It's just daft. It shouldn't be a political issue but because of the way Labour is funded it is and we all suffer because of it. Edit: Another incident to illustrate how bad it is: My colleague who used to be involved in NHS management was once giving a talk to staff representatives about a new policy document outlining the aims of the service. He got to the part where it said the priority of the service would be the patients and he was imediately heckled by the majority in the room. They wanted the wording changed to read that the priority of the service would be the NHS staff. That is the mindset and it's deeply disturbing, patients come second.

Interesting View on Al-Qaeda from Iraq's UN Ambassador - link below. Those of us with longer memories will remember that in 2003, 100's of Al-Qaeda and other groups flew to Syria to defend Saddam and after the fall started killing Shia and Allied troops, the Syrian Govt supported that. Assad has allowed Al-Qaeda to operate in Syria for a decade now and it has backfired on him. Strange that the west should be following a parallel course but that's life. To label the whole rebel movement as Al-Qaeda is rather silly as they form a very small part. I doubt Al-Qaeda will have much influence after the war, Sunni Tribal leaders turned against them in Iraq as they wanted peace in their communities. The same thing will happen in Syria. No doubt Al-Qaeda will carry out some terrorism but Assad is to blame, without his decade long support the group wouldn't be there in the 1st place. http://www.cbsnews.com/8301-503543_162-57485002-503543/al-qaeda-a-cancer-in-syria-says-iraqs-u.n-ambassador/

The United Nations General Assembly voted 133-12 on Friday for an Arab-backed resolution that severely criticized the Syrian government, blaming it almost exclusively for the killings and other atrocities that have come to shape the 17-month-old uprising there. http://www.nytimes.com/2012/08/04/world/middleeast/un-general-assembly-criticizes-syria.html http://www.un.org/apps/news/story.asp?NewsID=42624&Cr=Syria&Cr1= William Hague insists UK will NOT be sending weapons to Syria: The UK is set to increase its support for Syrian opposition forces in their fight against the nation's brutal dictator Bashar Assad, William Hague revealed today. The funds will only come in the form of 'non-lethal' support, it will NOT, involve sending armaments to the rebels, the British Foreign Secretary confirmed. http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2012/aug/03/hague-uk-help-syria-rebels Obama authorizes secret 'non lethal' support for Syrian rebels Separately from the president's secret order, the Obama administration has stated publicly that it is providing some backing for Assad's opponents. The State Department said on Wednesday the U.S. government had set aside a total of $25 million for "non-lethal" assistance to the Syrian opposition. A U.S. official said that was mostly for communications equipment, including encrypted radios. The State Department also says the United States has set aside $64 million in humanitarian assistance for the Syrian people, including contributions to the World Food Program, the International Committee of the Red Cross and other aid agencies. Also on Wednesday, the U.S. Treasury confirmed it had granted authorization to the Syrian Support Group, Washington representative of one of the most active rebel factions, the Free Syrian Army, to conduct financial transactions on the rebel group's behalf. The authorization was first reported on Friday by Al-Monitor, a Middle East news and commentary website. Last year, when rebels began organizing themselves to challenge the rule of Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi, Obama also signed an initial "finding" broadly authorizing secret U.S. backing for them. But the president moved cautiously in authorizing specific measures to support them. http://www.reuters.com/article/2012/08/02/us-usa-syria-obama-order-idUSBRE8701OK20120802 Over 1,000 Syrians, including four colonels, flee to Turkey - 2nd August.

United Nations Charter, international law, wishes of the Arab League, the war in Syria is directed by an authoritarian Govt. mainly against the Majority ethnic group. Russia has already intervened on the side of Assad supplying weapons and using the veto against the wishes of the majority of the Security council and UN General Assembly. There are all kinds of good moral and legal reasons for interfering because someone else has already done so and blocked the progress of freedom and democracy which in turn blocks basic freedoms and human rights for most Syrians. Rumour has it that Obama has signed off on none lethal assistance which will allow intelligence sharing, communications, logistics and training.

Interesting to see PressTV commenting on the democratic system of the USA, while I agree there is a problem with lobbying and donations it's best to take the editing of PressTV with a degree of scepticism. Press TV is owned by the state-owned media corporation Islamic Republic of Iran Broadcasting (IRIB). Its headquarters are located in Tehran, Iran. It had it's broadcasting licence revoked in the UK after colluding with the Iranian Govt. in the forced confession, after physical and psychological torture, of an Iranian dissident Maziar Bahari. A very disturbing case you can read about here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maziar_Bahari I would hope that anyone interested in supporting basic human rights and freedoms would not publicise such an organisation.

I would work backwards, I used nearly every beta and this wasn't noticed until the update was released.

Thank you for the photos - reminds me of Chilean Patagonia with better roads lol. I haven't visited Canada and that road trip from Montreal to Vancouver looks like a good place to start!

I'm having trouble remembering if this was any different in 1.60? Sometimes the more you look the worse it gets lol. Just tested all the terrains and it seems to be more of a problem with certain trees in the new ACR terrains, vehicles (mainly windows) seem to be affected more in the other terrains with Arma 2 vehicles worse than OA. Noticiable also when sun is shining on a tin roof - as you reach transition distance the roof pops from dull grey to bright white. It is difficult to quantify and seems to occur at the transition distance from the player for the various objects from high to low LOD, a few metres either way and it stops. Also seems to be affected by mainly by video settings eg, if ATOC is disabled you see a great deal of LOD changes - if you set it to "all trees and grass" it only occurs with certain foliage. Video memory on default and textures set to very high reduces the effects too. Detail level for terrain and objects has an effect - low detail makes it worse - if you have everything on very high it moves the problem back several hundred metres and is less noticeable. EG here on Bystrica (ATOC set to everything): player setPosATL [5290.68,2443.99,0.00259399]; If you look at the trees at 25degs, then rotate right to 55degs the LODS pop back and forth for a second. I seem to notice it most on the silver birch trees that have had the foliage changed from red to green since Chernarus. If you don't move and reduce the video settings you will notice the problem gets worse untill LODS are popping back and forth on the trees just across the road. player init: this addAction ["getpos", "plrpos.sqf"]; this addAction ["setpos", "plrsetpos.sqf"]; //plrpos.sqf _objPosition = getPosATL player; hintSilent format ["posATL Player:(%1)",_objPosition]; copytoclipboard str([_objPosition]); //plrsetpos.sqf player setPosATL [5290.68,2443.99,0.00259399]; paste the position from plrpos.sqf in there.

That is a valid point - when I bought my AMD HD 6970 I had to wait 6 months for the drivers to catch up on Ubuntu, when I complained I got 1 word back, "patience". Patience I have, but 6 months (total of about 9 months since the card was on the market)! I'm not sure if things are any better now - they were at a bit of a crossroads in graphics development at the time. Apart from that can't really complain, everything else has always worked. EDIT - looks like things are more organised - the HD7970 had support after a few months. -
Yes I get that, the blade twitching only occurs on the UH-1's, probably a texture error.

@oxmox Good grief, I have posted link after link of the Libyan election, oil production, evidence of international investment and the economic progress, they even have athletes at the Olympics. There is some lawlessness and some political tensions which leads to the odd gunfight and kidnapping and recently people have been throwing bombs at the empty intelligence headquarters building in Benghazi as a night time prank. Apart from that, things are rapidly turning around. If you have specific evidence to the contrary, please post it. The scandal of western leaders shaking hands with Gadaffi exists only with naive people who don't understand international relations. Democratic leaders were never friends with Gadaffi. They were obliged to deal with him after he renounced WMD and the UN and other sanctions were lifted. That is how things work, no matter how unpleasant the person, it's called diplomacy. The myth that a shake of hands and some limited cooperation meant more that it did, is a figment of the imagination of the far left. Since when did the handshake of a politician mean anything? No treaties were signed apart from the $5billion Italian colonial reparation agreement which was a bribe to get Gadaffi to manage illegal imigration. Nothing gave him immunity from slaughtering the oposition or absolve Libya's international obligations under the UN Charter or Geneva Conventions. I will be 40 in November, I have lived in 5 different countries on 3 different continents and experienced war, terrorism, sanctions and various other political strife and really don't need explanations like the above, I have seen the various media/political slides and spin from all sides. Mumbling the same thing over and over again will not convince me. If you would like to compare Syria's future to that of Somalia that would make some sense, we have Russia to thank for it after they allowed x2 peace plans to fail. The new myth that all Syria's problems are somehow caused by outside interference doesn't stack up at all. The people who have the greatest interest in seeing the regime topple are the Syrian Majority - the Sunnis who make up 70% of the population. The attempts by Assad and Putin to wash them out of the equation show just how dishonest their position is.

Too late for UN intervention? I now think so, there is too much hate involved at this stage. Shame something couldn't be done earlier: On Tuesday, embittered Rebels in Aleppo execute some Shabiha they have captured. I guess they will all fight till there is nothing left now. Amateur video shows Syria rebels killing 'Assad loyalists' (sanitized for your protection, it's available elsewhere uncut.) http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-middle-east-19083915
