  1. They are hiring Linux game developers? Nothing released yet and maybe the project could be cancelled but saying they haven't done anything yet is not entirely true..... Valve confirms Steam for Linux http://www.bit-tech.net/news/gaming/2012/07/17/valve-steam-linux/ Valve anounces Steam for Linux Beta (it will probably arrive before Arma3) http://steamforlinux.com/?q=en/node/86 One Of The New Valve Linux Employees Is... 31/05/2012 http://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=news_item&px=MTExMDM Valve Picks Up Another All-Star Linux Developer.....14/07/2012 http://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=article&item=valve_linux_sdl&num=1 Also the Valve Linux blog......by the Valve Linux Team: http://blogs.valvesoftware.com/linux/faster-zombies/ Nvidia also attended the recent graphics meetings which they have not done for several years and last year AMD increased it's Linux Driver Dev team from 2 - 5.

USA Politics Thread - *No gun debate*

Heh heh - stunningly stupid, Todd Akin is a moron, I hope this guy loses his seat and never holds public office again. You can find them on both sides though, look up Hank Johnson Dem. Georgia, he stated that the Island of Guam could possibly capsize if too many people were on the island, he won an election after that so don't have any high expectations in the Akin case!
  3. I'm not? It was a point about Valve moving their focus to OpenGL and Linux that was made on the previous page and the research already done on the matter. A few posters said they would give 8 a miss and wait for 9. http://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=news_item&px=MTE1NzE http://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=news_item&px=MTE1ODI You see what is the point of saying, I'm giving Windoze8 a miss and waiting for 9 if gaming has moved to Linux? Why bother with Windows at all when you get an equal product for nothing? Might be difficult for those new to linux to switch but for those of us that only boot into Windows to play games......
  4. If thrust reversal could be implemented that would be excellent - it would be great to do things like this: -Y99XPZQq10

    J.S.R.S. 1.5

I have given this mod a try a few times over the years and various other sound mods and was always disappointed by the lack of sound direction. E.g. in the vanilla game if someone shoots on your right, you hear the sound at increased volume through your right speaker / earphone. With many sound mods you seem to be enveloped in the sound and it spoils the simulation for me as you can't tell what is going on. Has this situation changed?

Syria - What should we do if anything?

Doesn't say who's troops though does it? The most likely scenario would be a Turkish and Jordanian peace keeping force with the Americans giving special assistance to destroy and decontaminate the WMD sites. This would usually require a UN Security Council vote and authorisation so might be yet more fun with 'His Excellency appointed by God' Putin. The Israelis are handing out gas masks and there is a public campaign urging people to collect them. Much of the press is linking it to Iran but maybe it has something to do with Syria? Something else for reference: Syrian troops and militia were behind the Houla massacre of 108 people in May, UN investigators have concluded. Report issued on 15 August 2012. Many in this thread said the Houla massacre was blamed on the Syrian Army and Shabiha erroniously by the western media. It was confirmed recently in a report by the UN Human Rights Council that the Syrian Government was responsible and the violations were the result of "state policy". UN observers say at least 108 people died, including 49 children and 34 women. No more than 20 appeared to have been killed by shellfire. Many of the rather dubious news sites linked to as evidence by others (Medialens?, are they on their summer hols or a book tour?) have so far not commented on this latest development lol. http://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/middle-east/syrian-troops-committed-war-crimes-says-un-report-8050282.html UNSMIS mission draws to a close: _SWL8HE2sQY
  7. Buy the time Windows9 is available it's entirely possible that many if not most major games may be available on linux with the better performing OpenGL. So what would be the point of spending money on something when there is an alternative you can get for free along with vast libraries of free software? I see MS have slashed the price of Windows8 compared to previous releases but even so, why should we be bothered if there are cheaper and better products?
  8. Since the FU statement on Nvidia by Linus Torvalds and the above Valve change in strategy, Nvidia seem to be more interested in playing fair these days and are sending people along to meetings. If you haven't seen it, you must watch this, Torvalds FU/finger to Nvidia, he is a great man and it's such an unexpected moment: _36yNWw_07g
  9. Forget it - buy a joystick and set the views to the hat switch with up and down on Zoom in / out. Also have a button set to fire flares. Using that method I very rarely crash and usually survive missiles. Trying to juggle keys and mice + trying to find R key in .25 of a second = death for all.

SOPA - Internet as we know it about to be gone?

For additional info on the MegaUpload thing check out this, it's the US DOJ charges etc. It's good to know as it's never really been made clear in any of the media reports: http://www.justice.gov/opa/pr/2012/January/12-crm-074.html It's a bit more complicated than simple copyright infringement. As to what evidence they have to support all that, I suppose we will have to await the trial to find out.
  12. Not sure if they have stopped dreaming? They just needed a U-turn away from hazardous, highly expensive reusable space planes to the earlier disigns that are more effective. There is still the SLS and SpaceX have already started lifting cargo to the ISS and will begin human transport to LEO in the next few years: QwDCWTqNceQ 6p6EruPdoXY SpaceX will also launch a lunar mission in 2013 for Astrobotic Technology who hope to win the Google Lunar X Prize.
  13. I'm very reluctant to try this without a changelog. Can anyone confirm it's ok and doesn't break some multiplayer aspect or confuse battleye?

Syria - What should we do if anything?

Syrian rebels bag a Mig-23: zYjXxVyOW-A There is footage of a captured pilot, a Colonel, it appears genuine and he has a characteristic circular bruise on his face that can be caused by the oxygen mask when ejecting. ^ where did the Steyr AUG come from? Surplus Saudi, or Libyan export?
  15. @sthalik not sure if you saw my post on the last page (links don't seem to have worked so posted again) but there is a report from Phoronix where Valve made a presentation at SIGGRAPH (Special Interest Group on Computer Graphics and Interactive Techniques) showing that: http://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=news_item&px=MTE1NzE http://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=news_item&px=MTE1ODI
  16. It's not just the hackers, it's the team killers and general game disruption, people destroying all the vehicles, others who shoot anyone not in their squad, I would suggest locking your servers and only giving out the PW to people you know on TS or people who can answer some Arma 2 trivia questions, till summer is over. They will get bored and move on.
  17. You tried a flavour of Unix:like (not linux) from 2005 on a celeron 400Mhz PC (released 1999) with most likely a PCI Geforce 6200 card? What I'm simply pointing out is that much time has passed since then. I tried the first releases of Ubuntu back then and it certainly wasn't the greatest experience. You are attempting to compare an experience gained on some very dated technology, 6+ years ago, with a much advanced product these days. You are effectively saying that you have no time for Windows 7 because you gave Windows 95 a try and didn't like it. It's 2012 and what most of us are talking about here is the experience you get with Debian Linux such as Ubuntu 12.04: Valve is recruiting Linux devs, the CEO has seen the proof - it's probably going to happen. Here Is Valve's Source Engine Left 4 Dead 2 On Linux http://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=news_item&px=MTE1Njc http://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=news_item&px=MTE1MjI NVIDIA To Meet With X.Org Developers Next Month http://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=news_item&px=MTE1NzY Valve & Intel Work On Open-Source GPU Drivers http://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=news_item&px=MTE0MzQ The Arma2 Linux thread: http://forums.bistudio.com/showthread.php?129553-ARMA2-OA-CO-Demo-Free-TOH-on-WINE-Linux!
  18. You ran FreeBSD 6.x on a tonker toy slot1/370 PC from 1999, did it have an AGP?, 64mb of RAM?, no doubt a 56k modem? and complain about the linux experience and somehow relate that to the situation that exists today? Doesn't compute with me at all?
  19. Well of course you can take the narrow view that this project exists in isolation and cutting it wouldn't matter. It's part of a larger program and cutting it would damage everything else, it would also ignore the deep budget cuts that have already taken place and points to a deep ignorance of the subject or possibly the usual wilful trolling and US bashing. The Mars program has already had it's budget slashed and 2 missions cancelled, so it's had it's round of budget cuts along with the rest of NASA, you have to leave them something or you lose the expertise. Putting all these people out of work wouldn't really be be the right thing to do in the long term and would affect the US economy as a whole. The two places this will occur are the Moon and Mars. Mars exploration requires practice as it's more difficult to land there than either the Earth or Moon. That's what some people fail to understand, the landing phase of this mission was probably far more significant than the exploration phase. It's something that requires experience, if space exploration is to advance and meet the goals set for it, or, don't set the goals in the 1st place. It's interesting to note that whenever NASA appears in the headlines it is always closely followed by this sort media heckling about cost. I've seen it occur for decades even though NASA's share of the federal budget decreases every year. NASA's budget in 2012 is the the lowest % share of the Federal Budget (0.48%) in 52 years. Strange that the media rarely ask the same questions about other nations space activities as there are many with very expensive space programs contrasted by severe poverty problems far worse than anything in the US: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_space_agencies It may be wise for NASA to put aside some money for the future. Looking at the recent decline in rationality and intelligent debate on most blogs, there could be just cause to plan for a future search for intelligent life on Earth.
  20. Think of it as extreme engineering and research and development. What are the possible spinoffs? It's doubtfull many of the benefits all of us experience today would exist without projects like this. The money doesn't simply disappear into space, it funds thousands of science, engineering and manufacturing jobs, that is important to the economy: NASA Launches New Technology Transfer Portal http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NASA_spin-off_technologies http://spinoff.nasa.gov/ http://www.techbriefs.com/ You could of course simply dump the money for short term gain, then the people that benefited would return next year and ask for more, as they always do......
  21. True it is getting old and bloated and that's why there is a replacement for 2013 (hopefully): Wayland What is Wayland? Wayland is a new protocol that enables 3D compositors to be used as primary display servers, instead of running the 3D compositor as an extension under the (2D) X.org display server. Or, in layman's terms, it assumes you're using a 3D desktop from the start, instead of bolting on 3D capabilities to an 2D framework. http://wayland.freedesktop.org/ Regarding everyday PC use, browsing, Office, email and DTP - the Linux experience is faster and far superior to windows - I use both every day, no problems at all. The only problem I ever had with a browser was a problem with a Firefox extension that caused flash to crash. Once disabled it was fine.

Do people still play public MP?

I haven't noticed any decrease in numbers, if anything, more are playing. The noob irritation factor is slightly higher as people don't know how to play and break the rules. Sometimes 1 or 2 hackers but the number is decreasing as more and more are banned (lol @ the ones who impersonate moderators here). Only noticed 2 this weekend - some server admins really need to do their homework on allowing addons. Unfortunately most of the more experienced players only play on locked servers so noobs can't learn how good Arma2 can be.

Hmmmm how does he pass his Psychological Fitness-for-Duty Evaluation? I thought that was in place in many US PD's to ensure nutcases aren't carrying guns in uniform? Hold your breath though - he is writing a second letter to clarify things as he says he was misunderstood. Reading some of his previous letters to various publications I would say he needs to get out more lol. Recent picture of Walt Wawra
