Iran to make major nuclear announcement within days, Ahmadinejad says
PELHAM replied to eble's topic in OFFTOPIC
Anyone wanting detail of the evidence of Iran's Nuclear Weapons Program should read this: IAEA Board of Governers Distribution Restricted GOV/2011/65 Date: 8 November 2011 For Official use only Implementation of the NPT Safeguards Agreement and relevant provisions of Security Council resolutions in the Islamic Republic of Iran http://www.isisnucleariran.org/assets/pdf/IAEA_Iran_8Nov2011.pdf http://www.isisnucleariran.org/ It details all the evidence gathered so far on the Iranian Nuclear Weapons Program and is very convincing. It covers many aspects including procurement, uranium enrichment, explosives development, organisation and management, staff training and missile payload designs. Iran has refused to give explanations for much of it and refused access to IAEA inspectors. Iran has made a formal complaint to the IAEA about the publishing of this secret report on the above website. So I guess the truth hurts lol. -

Agree with the above, the side to side view and the mouse steering is excellent, a great new feature. I like how the vehicle follows the V cursor in 3rd person. -The up and down view needs work. It moves too far too quickly to the extremes, I'm not sure it's needed at all. -In 3rd person when driving slowly over the crest of a hill or down a steep bank, (eg Takistan, Naran Darre Pass) the view rotates to the rear and you can't see where the vehicle is going? -

Well Israel is a good example of the strange workings of the NPT but a bad example of what is actually happening here. Iran is all too glad to have this reduced to the question of Israel as it obscures the real agenda. The arguments between Israel and Iran are mostly phoney. There are wider issues: - The internal conflict in Islam between Sunni and Shia. - Conflict between the Royalist Islamic Kingdoms and Iran. - Iranian and American conflict. - The control of the Persian Gulf and the export of oil from the region. - Continuing Cold War rivalry between the superpowers. Iran obtaining nuclear weapons works to the advantage of itself in it's own back yard and certain other nations. Look at the way the UN Security Council votes and you will identify who. -

It's unusal but US Politicians have called on Israel to join the NPT. See my post above about the 2008 UN Resolution. Generally they ignore it,not sure why. The problem with Israel signing the NPT as an NNWS (no prospect of it being allowed as an NWS) means if it has nuclear weapons it would have to immediately begin to disarm under Article III. For Israel to sign there would have to be some trust that the other players in the middle east would also be honouring the NPT. The difficulty is that Syria and Iran have a long history of covert nuclear development, refusing IAEA inspection and breaking their NPT obligations, so where do you begin to solve this? It's the usual circular Middle Eastern farce. -

Please read up on the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty. It does not only concern nuclear weapons, it also includes access for the IAEA to inspect and verify, to comment on the NPT you have to read and understand it. There are no sanctions against Israel because there are no legal grounds for any. In 2008 the US backed a UN resolution urging Israel to sign the NPT and open their facilities for inspection, it also called for a 2012 conference on the issue of a non-nuclear middle east. -

I think there should be a commitment to a nuclear free zone in the middle east, similar to the one in central Asia. But yes, the situation is odd, Israel didn't sign therefore has no international obligations. Iran signed and therefore has these requirements and is now acting illegally. North Korea signed the NPT but decided to withdraw giving 90 days notice so is now legal. So why is it that Iran stays in the NPT and continues to act the part of international nuclear law breaker, why don't they just withdraw from the agreement? Does it serve internal politics to be seen to be standing up to the rest of the world and the 'Great Satan'? Does the NPT and a veneer of legitimacy give Iran leverage and moral authority in opposition to it's rivals in the region, including Israel? If it were to withdraw would it then become more of a pariah state like North Korea? Would China and Russia then have to accept the use of tougher measures and sanctions? It's a very odd game. Basically they are acting just as the Israelis did but are using the NPT to appear morally superior. I suspect Mahmoud Ahmadinejad uses this game to enhance his status and power in Iran, all dubious leaders do it. Have a look at the timeline on the previous page (2005) and notice when international relations seriously deteriorated and who was elected president at the time. -

The Nuclear issue in Iran dates back many years. The key issue is Iran's secret nuclear program which is illegal under international law as it has signed the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty. The UN Security Council has passed seven resolutions on Iran due to it's illegal nuclear activites and considers them a threat to world peace under Chapter VII of the United Nations Charter. A Timeline of events: December 2002: Satellite photos reveal nuclear sites at Natanz and Arak. February, 2003: IAEA head Mohammed Al Baradei arrives with a team to inspect nuclear sites and plans. August 2003: Weapons grade uranium is discovered at Natanz. October, 2003: Iran says it will stop producing enriched uranium and agrees to sign the Additional NPT Protocol, after meeting with French, German and British foreign ministers. December 2003: Iran signs Additional NPT Protocol. September 2004: The IAEA orders Iran to stop planning uranium enrichment. US Secretary of State Colin Powell urges UN Security Council sanctions. November 2004: Iran agrees with the EU to temporarily suspend uranium enrichment, while the status of the nuclear program is being negotiated. January 2005: Iran allows inspectors into the Parchin plant. April 2005: Iran indicates that uranium conversion at Isfahan will be resumed. June 2005: Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, Tehran's ultra-conservative mayor, wins a run-off vote in presidential elections, defeating cleric and former president Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani. August-September 2005: Tehran says it has resumed uranium conversion at its Isfahan plant and insists the programme is for peaceful purposes. IAEA finds Iran in violation of the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty. May 2005: the EU warns that resuming uranium conversation will halt trade and economic negotiations. August 2005: Under newly elected president Mahmud Ahmadinejad, Iran announces its plan to resume uranium enrichment. September 2005: Ahmadinejad asserts Iran's right to process nuclear fuels on its own soil and claims Iran seeks nuclear energy for peaceful purposes. 2006: Iran declares that it will no longer cooperate voluntarily with the IAEA. Negotiations between Russia and Iran over whether Russia might process uranium for Iran continue. January 2006: Iran breaks IAEA seals at its Natanz nuclear research facility. February 2006: IAEA votes to report Iran to the UN Security Council over its nuclear activities. Iran resumes uranium enrichment at Natanz. March 2006: After repeatedly remarking Iran's unwillingness to be more transparent about its nuclear activities, IAEA head El Baradei says he will forward a report on this issue to the U.N. Security Council. At the end of the month, the Security Council approves a statement requesting Iran to halt nuclear activities. July 2006: A U.N. resolution demanded that Iran suspend nuclear enrichment and reprocessing by the end of August. Iran ignored the demand. September 2006: The IAEA contested a House of Representatives report, saying it exaggerated claims of Iran's nuclear preparedness. Iran and the European Union cancel negotiations on uranium enrichment. October 2006: President Bush signs Freedom Support Act into law, authorizing sanctions against any country that provides support for Iran's nuclear program. October-November 2006: The IAEA finds evidence that enrichment technology is operable. It also finds traces of materials required for atomic warheads at a nuclear waste facility. December 2006: The UN Security Council votes unanimously to impose sanctions to halt Iran's ability to acquire nuclear technology or materials, including the demand that enrichment program stop immediately. Iran declares that sanctions will not halt its ability to continue nuclear work. January 2007: Iran says the U.N. sanctions will not halt its uranium enrichment. March 2007: UN Security Council imposes second round of sanctions on Iran. October 2007: United States imposes unilateral sanctions against Iran. It designates Iran's Quds Force a terrorism supporter, and calls out the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) for "support of weapons of mass destruction." March 2008: The UN Security Council imposes a third round of sanctions. Iranian officials declare the sanctions illegal and coercive, and say Iran will continue to develop its nuclear potential. September 2008: UN Security Council reaffirms commitment to sanctions, and to incentives if Iran agrees to halt uranium enrichment. September 2009: After satellites reveal a secret nuclear facility, Iran admits that it is building a uranium enrichment plant near Qom, but insists it is for peaceful purposes. Secret nuclear development is illegal under the NPT. September 2009: Iran refuses to accept the international proposal to end the dispute over its nuclear programme. UN nuclear watchdog IAEA passes a resolution condemning Iran for developing a second uranium enrichment site in secret. June 2010: Resolution 1929 imposed a complete arms embargo on Iran, banned Iran from any activities related to ballistic missiles, authorized the inspection and seizure of shipments violating these restrictions, and extended the asset freeze to the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) and the Islamic Republic of Iran Shipping Lines (IRISL). The resolution passed by a vote of 12–2, with Turkey and Brazil voting against and Lebanon abstaining. A number of countries imposed measures to implement and extend these sanctions, including the United States, the European Union, Australia, Canada, Japan, Norway, South Korea, and Russia. June 2011: Resolution 1984 extended for a further 12 months the mandate of the Panel of Experts established by Resolution 1929. November 2011: A recent International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) report, based on the intelligence of 10 governments, presented images, letters and diagrams that suggested Iran was secretly working on nuclear weaponry. The IAEA Board of Governors passed a resolution by a vote of 32–2 that expressed "deep and increasing concern" over the possible military dimensions to Iran's nuclear program and calling it "essential" that Iran provide additional information and access to the IAEA. -

Iran to make major nuclear announcement within days, Ahmadinejad says
PELHAM replied to eble's topic in OFFTOPIC
Iran is a signatory of the Non-Nuclear Proliferation Treaty (NPT) NNWS parties to the NPT agree not to "receive," "manufacture" or "acquire" nuclear weapons or to "seek or receive any assistance in the manufacture of nuclear weapons" (Article II). NNWS parties also agree to accept safeguards by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) to verify that they are not diverting nuclear energy from peaceful uses to nuclear weapons or other nuclear explosive devices (Article III). Iran is in breach of those agreements hence the UN Resolutions and Sanctions etc. (see page 3 of this thread). Having a weapon ready to fire or possession of viable components is not the issue. By hiding elements of it's nuclear program (eg Qom), refusing access to the IAEA and seeking information and assistance from others is already breaking international law. Resolution 1696 (31 July 2006) demanded that Iran suspend its uranium enrichment activities, invoking Chapter VII of the United Nations Charter to make that demand legally binding on Iran. Chapter VII of the United Nations Charter sets out the UN Security Council's powers to maintain peace. It allows the Council to "determine the existence of any threat to the peace, breach of the peace, or act of aggression" and to take military and non-military action to "restore international peace and security". -

Sorry about that, as this is a thread about Iran I thought that's what you meant. Hope you understand why it is correct for any of the 5 NWS nations to insist others cannot have Nuclear weapons if they have signed the NPT? In other news: Iran also cut off oil supplies to the Netherlands, Spain, Italy, France, Greece and Portugal today. It is said to be a reaction against finger pointing by the EU at Iranian involvement in terrorist activity in Thailand, Georgia and India during the past week. Iran seems to be targeting Israelis in response to the attacks on it's nuclear scientists which it blames on Israel. -In Bangkok a residential house exploded after a bomb factory exploded by accident. An Iranian man carrying a bag of explosives and grenades was severely injured when that also exploded. Magnetic bombs were defused at the house and a second Iranian was arrested trying to board a flight to Malaysia. -An explosion in New Delhi injured the wife of an Israeli diplomat and a driver after a magnetic bomb was attached to a car by a passing motorcyclist, three bystanders were also injured. The incident occurred close to the residence of the Indian Prime Minister. -Another magnetic bomb on a car was defused after being found at the Israeli embassy in the Georgian capital of Tbilisi. Security sources say all the bombs were of a similar sophisticated design. Bomb factory in Bangkok where 3 Iranians lived minus roof and windows. -

Iran is a signatory of the Non-Nuclear Proliferation Treaty (NPT) It is not the US or Russia telling them they can't have nuclear weapons it's the UN Security Council. Iran has signed an agreement stating they will not develop Nuclear weapons and will submit to verification procedures by the International Atomic energy Authority. The problem arose when Iran was repeatedly caught hiding aspects of it's Nuclear Program which led to the UN Security Council Resolutions shown in my post above. It's a principle of international law, Iran can't have it both ways. If they want to develop nuclear weapons they must first withdraw from the NPT giving 90 days notice. NNWS parties to the NPT agree not to "receive," "manufacture" or "acquire" nuclear weapons or to "seek or receive any assistance in the manufacture of nuclear weapons" (Article II). NNWS parties also agree to accept safeguards by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) to verify that they are not diverting nuclear energy from peaceful uses to nuclear weapons or other nuclear explosive devices (Article III). Iran is a party to the NPT but was found in non-compliance with its NPT safeguards agreement and the status of its nuclear program remains in dispute. In November 2003 IAEA Director General Mohamed ElBaradei reported that Iran had repeatedly and over an extended period failed to meet its safeguards obligations, including by failing to declare its uranium enrichment program.[19] After about two years of EU3-led diplomatic efforts and Iran temporarily suspending its enrichment program,[60] the IAEA Board of Governors, acting under Article XII.C of the IAEA Statute, found in a rare non-consensus decision with 12 abstentions that these failures constituted non-compliance with the IAEA safeguards agreement.[20] This was reported to the UN Security Council in 2006,[61] after which the Security Council passed a resolution demanding that Iran suspend its enrichment.[62] Instead, Iran resumed its enrichment program.[63] -

The International Atomic Energy Authority says different: In 2006, the IAEA inspectors found sensitive documents, including instructions and diagrams on how to make uranium into a sphere, which is only necessary to make nuclear weapons. Iran furnished the IAEA with copies, claiming not to have used the information for weapons work, which it had obtained along with other technology and parts in 1987 and the mid-1990s. It is thought this material was sold to them by Abdul Qadeer Khan (Pakistan), though the documents did not have the necessary technical details to actually manufacture a bomb. In November 2011, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Board of Governors rebuked Iran following an IAEA report detailing how Iran had undertaken research and experiments geared to developing a nuclear weapons capability. The IAEA report outlines, in depth, the country’s detonator development, the multiple-point initiation of high explosives, and experiments involving nuclear payload integration into a missile delivery vehicle. IAEA officials identified a "large explosive containment vessel" inside Parchin. The IAEA later assessed that Iran has been conducting experiments to develop nuclear weapons capability. Iran rejected the details of the report and accused the IAEA of pro-Western bias and threatened to reduce its cooperation with the IAEA. UN Security Council The UN Security Council has passed seven resolutions on Iran: Resolution 1696 (31 July 2006) demanded that Iran suspend its uranium enrichment activities, invoking Chapter VII of the United Nations Charter to make that demand legally binding on Iran. Resolution 1737 (23 December 2006) imposed sanctions after Iran refused to suspend its enrichment activities, cutting off nuclear cooperation, demanding that Iran cooperate with the IAEA, and freezing the assets of a number of persons and organizations linked to Iran's nuclear and missile programs. It established a committee to monitor sanctions implementation.[116] Resolution 1747 (24 March 2007) expanded the list of sanctioned Iranian entities and welcomed the proposal by the permanent five members of the Security Council plus Germany for resolving issues regarding Iran's nuclear program. In resolution 1803 (3 March 2008), the Council decided to extend those sanctions to additional persons and entities, impose travel restrictions on sanctioned persons, and bar exports of nuclear- and missile-related dual-use goods to Iran.[117] Resolution 1835 (27 September 2008) reaffirmed the preceding four resolutions, the only one of the seven not to invoke Chapter VII. Resolution 1929 (9 June 2010) imposed a complete arms embargo on Iran, banned Iran from any activities related to ballistic missiles, authorized the inspection and seizure of shipments violating these restrictions, and extended the asset freeze to the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) and the Islamic Republic of Iran Shipping Lines (IRISL). The resolution passed by a vote of 12–2, with Turkey and Brazil voting against and Lebanon abstaining. A number of countries imposed measures to implement and extend these sanctions, including the United States, the European Union, Australia,[118] Canada,[119] Japan,[120] Norway,[121] South Korea,[122] and Russia.[123] Resolution 1984 (8 June 2011) extended for a further 12 months the mandate of the Panel of Experts established by Resolution 1929. -

Are you sure you are quoting the proposed Fissile Material Cut-off Treaty there? What you say is true of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty, which is something different (Iran has signed the NPT which is why it is so often up infront of the Security Council for breaking the agreement.) The general aims of the Fissile Material Cut-off Treaty are supported by all members except Pakistan. That is why I hope that Iran will sign it once the negotiations and terms are finalised. (Israel, Iran and North Korea are also members, NK was the previous chair) http://www.defencetalk.com/pakistan-nuclear-talks-block-21243/ The Fissile Material Cutoff Treaty (FMCT) is a proposed international treaty to prohibit the further production of fissile material for nuclear weapons or other explosive devices. The Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons, commonly known as the Non-Proliferation Treaty or NPT, is a landmark international treaty whose objective is to prevent the spread of nuclear weapons and weapons technology, to promote cooperation in the peaceful uses of nuclear energy and to further the goal of achieving nuclear disarmament and general and complete disarmament. In January at the Geneva-based Conference on Disarmament, the United States re-affirmed it's call for a worldwide halt to the production of materials used in the making of nuclear weapons. “A verifiable end to the production of fissile material for use in nuclear weapons is necessary if we are to create the conditions for a world without nuclear weapons,†Assistant Secretary of State Rose Gottemoeller said January 24. http://london.usembassy.gov/acda069.html -
