Well they certainly used to in an earlier version. I wonder if they were deliberately disabled to claw back a little performance :)Ah I see, well then it is an obvious check box for the advanced video settings menu.

@dondaddahremoving the distance meter was intentional, so you can't "cheat" with the waypoint in using it for exact distance measure, distance is also removed from the communication menu.
On that note, can you remove the 'v' indicator completely, so you can rely solely on your map and what you see around you?

I can only play ArmA2 on normal settings, so I don't know if there is tracks on higher settings.
If not, I do find it odd that a multi-tonne tank with large belts won't make any tracks in the dirt and fields and so on...
(you should see a field ground up by an armed vehicle irl...)
Would add nicely to the game imo.

Oh? How close is that, exactly. Sure the AI will spot you at <100m but at like 500m+ I've never been spotted before firing (unless in a vehicle vs other vehicles). The problem is when you shoot that lone infantryman in the back, an entire city returns fire on an area 1x2m where you're laying and kill you within 0.5 seconds.See that's another thing. Imagine you where standing in some base in a valey in a wood somewhere, with nice hills and what not surrounding the area. You are talking to a mate and suddenly his head explodes.
Well...
1 - panic!
2 - seek cover while shouting SNIPER!!
3 - hope to live while scanning the forests for any sign of said sniper
The thing is, you would almost never see the sniper unless he fires again and you happen to see his mustle flash.
So when I position myself x hundred meters from my target in a good spot, fire one shot and then get killed within 2 seconds, that seems a bit off.
Even at 6-900 meters distance, they won't spot me but still after a while a patrol will come looking for me (if they are just VERY lucky every time or they have a lot of available patrols I don't know). Vehicles will, on the other hand often spot me at once though!
That should be dealt with somehow. Unless its a cold night and they have good IR equipment mounted :/

I didn't think the Ghillie suit actually worked in ArmA 2 against bots.As for sniping, I usually take the biggest, most powerful rifle available, find a spot at LEAST 700m away, and only open fire by myself if there are no vehicles. If there are vehicles, I wait until someone else attacks so the AI is preoccupied.
No matter how well concealed you think you are, vehicles will always spot you and machinegun your ass.
Nice tip on the vehicles being engaged, thanks.

Excellent feature!
Can you make the x and y update on your position automatically when you go into the menu?

Hi ACE2 team - you are epic. Thank you for making my dream come true of a decent sniper simulation environment.
I would love to have graphics on the elevation/windage menu, but I know it is time consuming with all that development and features people want, so I propose to make the graphics for you as a token of appreciation?
All I need is affirmation that you would like me to help out and a contact on the programmer who will be implementing the graphics so we can coordinate and test together.
Btw. I am a graphics designer by profession, so I promise not to deliver sucky graphics ;)

Whoops, moved this thread to the Suggestions thread.

For the rifles: Vanilla Arma2 doesn´t support adjusting windage and elevation, as there is no wind deflection anyway. This, however, is added by Ace2, including the tools like Range tables and Windspeed gauging devices, ranging binoculars and spotting scopes.
Ace2 mod thread is here: http://forums.bistudio.com/showthread.php?t=92466

For the positioning: I think the AI makes no difference between a skylined and non-skylined object. I´ve not tested this, though, so I may be wrong.
To slip away from your pursuers you need to be quick. The AI is very adept at moving on your position, and they will work together to find you. Instead of just the guy who saw you, you will also have to contend with his squadmates: 12 eyes see more than two. Once they are alerted, they scan their surroundings much more carefully. They don´t have x-ray vision, however, and a good hiding spot away from their search area will usually yield results. Get at least 200 meters away from your last position before hiding, that works for me most of the time.
Hi Goat,
thank you for your replies.
And I'll check that Ace2 out at once!

Hello all, and thank you BI for this fantastic, epic title.
I am wondering which things I should consider while playing as a sniper in ArmA2.
Rifle Question:
For instance, I can't find any controls of the Elevation and Windage. For more than one target at different distances I just aim above the target for elevation, but since the normal indicators for wind (flags flapping more or less, trees budgin more or less, smoke from chimneys and so on) are not accurate ingame, I have not yet found how windage is shown - is there an indicator?
Rifle Suggestion:
It would be sooo great if one could make a sniper team, with an AI spotter on your side, whispering distance and windage when pointing on a target. Then optional controls to set those dials correctly before taking the kill.
Positioning Question:
I never go where I would brake the skyline as this would very much give away my position at once. Is this also true in ArmA2 (that staying below skyline on for instance a hill top or whatever will give you a better chance of not being detected)?
Also, I never position myself in sunlight from my 10 to 2 as this would show a light reflection on the optics of the scope giving away my position. So is this also true in ArmA2?
On a note of positioning, I find that once I am spotted I can rarely slip away into the forest and disapear from my pursuers. It is like once they have seen me, they can easily track my every move, even though I am in solid cover making evasive escape maneuvers (normally you could walk straight past a prone sniper in guilesuit within few meters and not know he is there, if he was lying in a good spot). I could understand this if they had dog patrols with them. But without dogs they should go to my last seen position and scan the area. Am I not being careful enough when falling back or is the AI a tad psychic?
Positioning suggestion:
Add optical lense effect if sniper points at you with the sun beaming into his optics. Even at great distances its a dead giveaway.
Concealment Question:
In ArmA2 if I crawl towards a good position and spot an enemy that has not spotted me. Even though I lie completly still the enemy would often spot me anyway. Now thats eagle eyes for you Is this the same psychic abillity as before, or is my camouflage inadequate?
Concealment suggestion:
One could interact with the local vegetation, making the guilesuit the correct color for the coresponding surroundings (giving the sniper a nice concealment bonus avoiding detection more effectively).

Bump.
Can't lower my weapon either.. (it does actually help to not point your mustle at the locals when wanting to talk to them right?).

Ok, found a strange "fix" for this. Probably more Saitek sticks (?): If you have a z-axis on your stick (for example set to throttle), remove this completely from your bindings and your stick will work normally again... except for having to use throttle on the keyboard instead :/ (well, at least I could fly again, huh)..

I may well be involved in such a project... won't be happening for awhile though at the least 3-4 months.Oooooh, that would be great tho' :D

Please let me know:
in the harbor at the end of the part where you've been helping the oppisite faction for a while - they order to kill the dude in the small boat... I ofcourse would not kill this kinsman, so I turned my mustle on the sniper first, and then tried for the others in turn.... without great success - it seems their machine gunner can take several bullets in the head while gunning me down.
I die every time.
Am I really to kill the American?
Ah, never mind. Found the Escape Way ;)

id like to know how u shoot the planes down that are taking off cos soon as i get anywhere near im instanly shot down also dont sidewinders usually lock on cos i cant see that option anywhereYou could try the Helicopter training mission first ;)
Beware the two apc/tanks that are stationed near the end of the runway.
If you hover so they can't see you, you can take your marks down without hastle.

So have you tried sneaking in on some enemies with your night goggles on, closing in meter by meter only to shout out "HOSTILES SPOTTED 20M!!" ...gah... it would be nice to actually change the ingame voices into sets og running = shouting (like now), walking = speaking and crouching/crawling = hushed voice.
Would add a great deal to realism and submerging in the game.
Thanks.

Hi, my stick (Saitek st-90) keeps pulling back when in heli.
If I go and recalibrate in windows and test with various calibration tests the stick responds correctly. Also works correctly when flying heli in BF2 for instance.
I tried it out in the demo of ArmA2 and it worked perfectly. Now after I bought the game, first thing I did was update to 1.5 then start playing the EW mission..
I can't seem to correct this problem any way I try. Anyone with similar problems or even a solution?
Thanks.

Like the headline says... it would be nice if the rangefinders (and other/future battery driven equipment) automatically would equip the correct battery for said device.
...like weaponry auto-equips the correct ammo.
You can always choose to bring extra if you want, and you would never want to bring one without bats anyway (and if so just unequip the bat).
PS. Thanks again for THE best gaming experience of all times ACE2 team.
