That's too complicated. I prefer it if all enemies just shouted "HALT! HALT! HALT! HALT! HALT! HALT! HALT! HALT! HALT! HALT! HALT! HALT!" while shooting at you.I dont think its anywhere near perfection, but yes shouting would be nice. Compare with Bad Company 2. It may be an action-arcade game when it comes to gameplay, but if there's something it does right its audio. Its just amazing hearing people shout all around you, instead of the incredibly stiff coms system that's been with us since OFP.
I gotta agree, Bad Company 2 managed to capture at least the chaos of a firefight accurately in the voice cues of players and also managed to transfer information to the players at the same time. For example in Arma 2 you hear, "Fuck! 2. IS DOWN." whereas a better system would just be the observing AI to yell like in BC2, "Oh shit we've got a man down!", a single recorded line, and then we get the visual cue of 2's image either going red or disappearing to indicate injury or death. Though while I think this would be an improvement, I still don't mind the original voices at all and they do an excellent job conveying information.

blabla this threat sounds like a ubuntu help forum...lots of bad advice painting bugs as features.i played the same mission last night and the whole thing felt buggy:
- friendly ai got wasted due to stupidity. (i dont mind the exact reason, it just behaved unnatural dumb)
- after the apc got destroyed we moved on towards the airfield...i was exspecting we take out the AA on the hill that was mentioned in the briefing but hte leader just walked towards the airfield and suddenly the mission ended in a success...lol WTF. i was reading that after taking out the AA we get artillery support and should then attack the airfiled?...but nothing like that was executed. instead i had the feeling the ai bugged out.
this game is clearly not very polished. i understand the complexity of such a program and dont expect a perfect product but im abit disappointed mostly because people in this forum try to paint a much brighter picture about this game as it really is. (if you wonder what i mean with polished: check out blizzard games, they perfect what they do and deliver portions of perfection while their scope of their games is always just as huge as they can handle, and somehow i feel ARMA tires to do 1000 things but they all are not quite there.)
nevertheless i plan to invest my sparetime in this game in the upcomming time to see what makes people so exited about it. i hope ill find the good stuff and not only the bugs
Yeah the mission finished for me as well when I arrived at the airport because the AH1 had destroyed everything there. It was nothing but corpses and smoke. Another time the AH1 showed up and actually got shot down before it even killed the APC, I failed that time. A dynamic mission everytime is in fact a feature of the game. I'm sorry you were disappointed with the way yours played out.
As far as Blizzard games go I would hardly call them polished and simple describes them fairly accurately. Look at the patch history for Starcraft and you'll see that game wasn't always as perfect as its fanbase claims it to be.

I come across these all the time in the campaign especially on the Pathfinder mission. I'll wipe out a whole group of enemies and see one or two just standing there with their hands on the back of their heads. I tried interacting with them and can speak to them but other than that they just stand there. Am I just supposed to leave them be? I executed all the ones I came across and there is no penalty, I assume this is just some visual fluff. Am I correct?

The campaign is much better in OA. There are infantry, armor, and air missions that use all the new features, and there is one warfare mission. My only complaint is that you can finish the campaign fast, and I mean really fast. The actual number of missions isn't much shorter than Arma 2's but there are no longer the drawn out "search for this guy/ambush this car" type objectives. You won't have to wander around the countryside on foot as much and objectives are more straightforward.
For example, without spoiling very much, one mission puts you about half a kilometer away from an objective, you go there, complete it, and are taken by helicopter almost immediately to the next objective that can be completed in less than 5 minutes. Mission over. So the campaign feels significantly shorter than that of the first game but is still a lot of fun. As a standalone product it doesn't have that initial wow factor that Arma 2 had but combined with the original it's definitely worth the money for the new content and features.

DLC is certainly a sticky issue with Arma 2 considering the modding community but I'd be more than happy to pay for DLC, even stuff that I probably wouldn't use for three reasons.
1. It's typically more polished than what the modding community creates.
2. There simply aren't many developers like Bohemia out there and if micro-transactions keep them in business putting out quality games than I'm all for it.
3. The extra income might make Carrier Command come out a little quicker...ok probably not but I can dream.

So a new problem I've run into that I can't seem to figure out and after searching a little bit to no avail decided to ask.
When I try to connect to a server with Battleye turned on it says waiting for host, I connect just fine, I select my role, and then go on to try and play. It downloads the mission just fine and then the game begins to load, I'm running ACE by the way, the game loads about three quarters of the way and then suddenly returns to the server browser. I reinstalled Battleye but that didn't work and I tested on multiple servers running it all with the same problem. Non-Battleye servers work great, my game doesn't crash and my internet connection is fine, what's going on?

The fixes worked! Thank you both!

So just recently I updated my computer to Windows 7 and did a complete fresh start. So of course after getting everything essential set up I log onto Steam and install Arma 2. After finishing I told Steam to no longer update the game and downloaded the 1.05 patch from Armaholic. I run the patch and it says Extracting, it gets to 99% closes and a message pops up saying Wrong CD Key! Huh? I've never had this issue before on XP and I bought the game through steam. Is it something with Windows 7 or what?

There's some roleplaying choices in the campaign. Choosing which side to ally with, whether or not to pursue objectives, kill this guy or don't, that kind of thing.
-
Of course I will! Geez so many people complaining about performance. Arma 2 is the only game I can put everything up to high and play at 1920x1080. The framerate hit for me is almost nonexistant.
-
You do have a legitimate copy correct? After showing Arma 2 to one of my friends he decided he'd just pirate it instead of paying the 25 bucks on steam (so cheap too!) and got this error just a day later.

Am I seriously the only one who has relatively no issues with this game? I play multiplayer with relative ease and have even had some great matches on public servers, I don't have that great of a rig and I can turn most settings to high with view distance to full on Utes and all custom maps but on Chernarus I have to set that down to 4k. The AI bugs I've experienced have been trivial and easily corrected by just sending the order one more time and the worst campaign experience I ever had was having to restart Bitter Chill once. I mean Armed Assault was a total bugfest but I felt like Arma 2 had fixed more or less all the issues plaguing the first one.

It depends what gametype you are playing. In Warfare mode you command AI soldiers against other players commanding their own AI soldiers, in that case depending on the version of warfare, though this seems to be the most common, you will scroll your mouse wheel to open the context menu -> go to options -> then another menu will pop up with some basic options like -> buy gear/buy units/vote for command/etc. -> go to buy gear and choose your guns and equipment -> go to buy units buy men, vehicles, etc. -> ask where you're needed, check your map, head there, and hope you aren't killed 2 seconds into the fight
For Evolution/Domination look around your base for ammo and weapon crates, if you're new to the game you may not recognize them so you may want to ask, once again just approach the crate, aim at it, roll the mouse wheel to open the context menu, and choose gear, if you're close enough it'll open a menu where you exchange weapons with the crate
Some servers do have ranking that lets you use higher level vehicles, so in theory in most large scale gametypes, especially warfare, you will be able to eventually use battle tanks, helicopters, and planes, just keep playing and ask questions, you'll learn.
To get into a good clan check the squad pages in the forums, the community is actually very friendly despite what people from another community *cough* dragon rising *cough* might say and I'm sure one of them will be willing to take in a newbie.
If you're confused about the operation flashpoint name, the original Operation Flashpoint came out in 2001. It's sequels by the same developer are Armed Assault: Arma and Arma 2. The publisher of the first Flashpoint, Codemasters, acquired the name and used it to generate sales for their game Dragon Rising. Dragon Rising is not a comprehensive military sim like Arma 2. It lacks many of the features it promised and was generally abandoned by its own community.

SPLIT MY LUNGS WITH BLOOD AND THUNDER! THIS MAP IS AWESOME.
Thanks, DLing now.

As far as building the air units goes I actually don't think you get any as NAPA. If you load them up in the editor I believe the only air unit listed under their faction is a parachute.

I just wanted to say thanks for the best single player mission I have played for this game to date. I set everything to ultra and not 15 minutes in the Russians had launched an all-out assault on our base. They sent two hinds, an Su-25, and two APCs to try and dislodge us. It was total chaos, there were explosions going off, the crack of gunfire, people dying left and right, a fellow team managed to disable the APCs so I grabbed an RPG and climbed the control tower which by this point was badly damaged. So I wait for the perfect shot and take the tail rotor out on this hind, and as it spins around the airfield it sprays out its rockets and kills more of our guys and blasts the tower out from underneath me killing me. I was able to retain vision long enough to watch that bastard smash into the tree line. This mission is beyond epic.

M16A2 with M203. A little clunky but I like the style.

I think momentum should be factored into movement a little more and maybe have the option of automatically lowering your gun when facing too close to a wall.
Harvest Red vs. Eagle Wing vs. OA Campaign
in ARMA 2 & OA - GENERAL
Posted
Honestly I think they should make a campaign like Harvest Red again, add some great tension and atmosphere on the levels that Eagle Wing did and occasionally throw in an optional side mission. Like at the end of the first mission of Harvest Red I think it would have been cool if you got to the mountain top, pull at your laser designator and a context sensitive menu appeared and asked if you would like to see this portion of the battle from the perspective of the pilot. If you don't choose the option you go about the mission as usual, if you do the game switches you over to an aircraft pilot and you destroy the targets for Razor team. Upon completing your objectives you switch back, I think that would be a great way to maintain a steady narrative while still giving the players at least some optional variety in a way that doesn't detract from the overall plot.
