WC: I was thinking of installing the 10.5 Cats this weekend. ARe you suggesting I should hold? install the 10.4s instead. IIRC my 4890 is still running 9.1210.5 made my performance decrease, so I went back to 10.4

I just came across this bug when I was creating a custom radio actionhttp://forums.bistudio.com/showpost.php?p=1636895&postcount=30
I had this error, too, playing SP (Manhattan) when calling "Boomerang", function of radio was ok but the buggy text also has shown up

guys thank you for your great stories about your weird adventures in manhattan mission, I am so amused :-Dyes, Manhattan drove the hell out of me, too ;)
atm I'm playing Harvest Red again (now @latest beta in combination with @ace2) after having finished it @vanilla.
In my actual run I came through Manhattan without big problems (the hardest and most frustrating thing in the past was for me the collapsing Shaftoe when I came back trying to report him ROFL, that was incredible and of course a showstopper par excellence:rolleyes:, but this time all went ok with him)
Little funny story: Sykes laying injured on his back in the woods, Medic O'Hara unable to heal him correctly -> Sykes doesn't respond to orders (meanwhile supporting Transport Heli waiting to get us back to FOB) -> luckily Teamswitch working, so I'm switching to Sykes, can't stand up so crawling with 4xTime-Accel. about 20 minutes to the Heli and ... I (Sykes) can mount (from crawling position !) the bird too. And ... after landing safely @FOB Manhattan: Sykes is healed again during the flight, walking and following orders again
But all in all ArmA2 gives you so much thrill and feeling of immersive war scenarios and the variety of combat situations is nearly infinite ... great game, really

ATI Catalyst 10.5 Released !!:)
yes, but I wish it hadn't been released: FPS-drop by roundabout 10% in ArmA2 FPS analyser and about 20% in main menu screen (empty world) compared to 10.4
@Radeon 4870/512
maybe the new driver is better for the newer cards ...
I'll fall back to an older (for me faster) version now
-
just finished playing @70951 (-exThreads=3) SP Harvest Red/Manhattan for 2 1/2 hours.
no problems, no crashing, having often saved and reloaded the mission.
then I let run ArmA 2 FPS Analyzer, result here: nearly equivalent graphs to previous beta build, so no significiant changes referring to FPS here. if there's a small difference for FPS then it's the mean variation, that could be a little higher with 70951 than with 70709, but average is same.
(btw BM of FPS analyser didn't make any troubles here)
all in all, ArmA2 has never been so stable as it is since the beta's of May 2010, including this one of course.
(no tests for MP so far, it's late and I will have a self made caipirinha now, cheers ;) )

Sure :) Just need to tell the updater which arma to use :)
thx Sickboy, found the path-settings in the six-updater web suite :)
-
I have 2 harddisks in my rig.
at first (until late december 2009) I had single boot os=vista and arma2 installed on it. after having read multiple threads about performance I went to install XP 32 on the 2nd hd, as dual boot and went for another arma2-inst on xp (i've kept the older vista-installation on my vista-hd). everything went fine on each os, of course xp with better performance.
and now it comes to six-updater: on both os's (for both arma2 installations) I have installed six-updater / web-suite so when I was in the past on vista I let six-updater run to update arma2/vista-hd and when i was on xp I did the same for the arma2/xp-hd, without problems.
no I've made some performance-tests and they tell me that it's best to be on xp with running arma2 from the other hd (the one where os=vista, from xp-perspective its the non-system-disk), this works fine and without errors.
now I just want to use the arma2-installation that is physical on my "vista-hd" and run it out of xp.
but: by starting six-updater from my xp-hd the updater is updating what is on XP/C:\ and not what is on E:\ (from xp-perspective my vista-hd, where I want arma2 to be updated with six-updater). how can I get six-updater to update the arma2-inst that is on E:\(vista) instead of updating the arma2-inst that is on c:\(xp) ?
hope this wasn't written to complicated :o

just tested 70709 with this brilliant tool http://forums.bistudio.com/showthread.php?t=99125
I recognize comparing the graphs a continuing better performance with each new beta-build, slightly but recognizeable :)
-
... installing ...
has anyone tested already with different weather settings (cloud layer / changelog) ?
where exactly are these changes to make ?
-
thx for your job, sbsmac
in the meantime I found out 2 ways to get the problem solved:
1) deleting/renaming FPSlabels.txt (data will still be visible with "default"-labels made by analyser itself)
2) deleting the blank line in an editor, like you suggested
the problem is not really serious or urgent, because it can be fixed - as I know now - very quick and it's no showstopper at all. it might just be 'annoying' for someone who don't know what it is (like me, when I recognized it).
Unfortunately, I can't reproduce the error and so I cannot say how the blank line smuggled itself in the end of file (the text-line in the "Details" where you can type the label(s) seems to be stable, for example typing "return" doesnt create that blank line)
I'm off for work now, sya :)
-
did it with notepad, pasted content of 'corrupted' in it and same error :-)
so the content itself must be the problem ...
I just played around in a known good FPSlabels.txt with notepad and filling text randomly with many other different keys - like a monkey playing piano ;-)
nothing, the good .txt remains good, analyser runs like it should ...
the trouble's just with the file I sent you
to be more precise: the trouble's just with the CONTENT of the file I sent you
could it be that: I just opened the corrupted file in notepad again and pressed right-arrow-key and watched the cursor ... after the last text-line ('inland flight 70313 exthreads3') it stops after letting one line blank. in a good file there's no blank line after the last text-line. you can see this in notepad also by marking all text. very funny, indeed.
like that:
bad:
...
inland flight 70313 exthreads3
<cursor stops here>
good:
...
inland flight 70313 exthreads3
<cursor stops here>
-
FPSlabels.txt seems to be corrupt, because without or renamed analyser works fine again.
Maybe I did wrong labelling ?
btw. I sent you the corrupted file
-
the tool ran several times very fine, but now I get this one with startup (OS = xp 32 sp3):

[sbs]mac, great work
thx a lot for fixing regions-floating-point-problem in today's update,
it runs fine, now also for the ","-countries ;)
-
-> I tab on desktop, let the tool's setup.exe (V2.0) run and ... I get a weird graph in "FPS over time": Y-Axis (fps) ranges from 0 to 80, x-Axis (time) ranges from 0 to 8889277 nearly totally blue as if all dots/pixels in the graph's area are set ... (?)
-> tried it with every BM-file, all the time same crazy results
For all that have the same problem: sbsmac found out that it's because of the different floating point standards "." (mostly US/UK) instead of "," (mostly German). That's why my data mentioned above went astronomical high and made the output worthless. sbsmac changed in the "german" .rpt the "x.y" into "x,y" and now I have sensible output in the analyzer.
Thx so far @sbsmac :)
-
hi sbsmac,
just sent you 2 files via email: arma2.rpt and screenshot.jpg of analyser output
-
Thx very much for programming the Arma2FPS-Analyzer, the screenshots posted here look very good and sure give interesting feedback for all testers.
But I must be doing something wrong either in setup or in saving/getting back data / using the tool.
First of all this question: is it correct, that every time you want to use the tool you have to run setup.exe ? because I don't get info about any installation-path. so there isn't a resident .exe file except the setup.exe ?
my steps in detail:
-> I have copied the BM....pbo's in to Arma 2\missions\
-> I find these BM-missions in scenarios as expected and I can also run them
-> while running the BM-mission I have no other FPS-meter at OSD (I normally use FPS-meter of ATITrayTools)
-> the mission ends with the text '1-1-A 1 (langgis08) LOG SAVED'
-> I tab on desktop, let the tool's setup.exe (V2.0) run and ... I get a weird graph in "FPS over time": Y-Axis (fps) ranges from 0 to 80, x-Axis (time) ranges from 0 to 8889277 nearly totally blue as if all dots/pixels in the graph's area are set ... (?)
-> tried it with every BM-file, all the time same crazy results
here's the data logged in arma2.rpt (example):

at the moment 70313 without ' -exThread=x' leads to best gaming feeling compared with any previous builds. and so I'll vote :)
I have to quote myself, because I just let run the Benchmark Scenarios #1 and #2 with those for my rig challenging 'test-settings': all very high except vidmem=default, vd=3848m, AA=high, 3dres 1280x1024 (100%)
-exThreads | FPS @bench#1 | FPS @bench#2
=0 | 23 | 8
=1 | 23 | 9
=2 | 23 | 8
=3 | 24 | 10
So it seems I did my voting yesterday out of the blue -> the data above tells a different story :D
So -exThreads=3 seems to make a good job, for my system, too.
-
same here: smoother gameplay and best fps with 70313 WITHOUT any exThreads parameter for me, so I'll remove -exThreads from my command line ...

to open up the command line for Arma 2...where do i go? :)on your beta-link click right mouse button and go for "properties" (I think that's it in english, in german it's "Eigenschaften").
An interface should open, look for the entry next to "Ziel" (="Destination" in the U.S./UK-Version ?), in my case it looks like this:
"C:\Program files\Bohemia Interactive\ArmA 2\beta\arma2.exe" -mod=beta -exThreads=3 -nosplash -world=empty
the famous command line begins right to arma2.exe", there you can separated by blanks set your parameters, as you see in my example -exThreads=3 is set
(btw: -nosplash starts your game without intro, so it's time saving for loading and -world=empty shows you instead of the aircraft carrier blank sea, that's for reducing loading time, also)
be sure that the game is being executed in your arma2-installation-folder, in my case it's "C:\Program files\Bohemia Interactive\ArmA 2" (next to "ausführen in", it's the 2nd line from above in the interface where you can make entries (otherwise you would get startup errors, anyway, I guess).
all in all, it's a job that takes a few seconds, indeed.
hope, you'll have success :)

Yeah I know my 9800 isn't the fastest card on the planet, but should be able to run this better then what it is now. Don't cha think?Nope, first of all it's your CPU that turns out as the bottleneck, I think. Your rig is close to mine (maybe a few steps lower than mine) and I get with ingame settings all maxed (very high) out except VD=3848, AA=high, vidmem=default, res 1280x1024 (100%) in benchmark no 1 -> 24 FPS, with 1.05 and with 70313 (-exthreads=3)
My graphics card is not bad, but my CPU is crawling behind it, I know this and there are many ways to find out (change for example amount of AI in editor, detail of terrain, trees, cities like chernogorsk are sometimes showstopper, and so on ... ). Many players here say that it should be at least a 3,0 GHZ Dualcore or better to beat the 30's in FPS constantly, and I think so, too. Look at my specs (spoiler below) - I know already that my system CANNOT perform better than the benchmark tells me. But I can live with that, now.
;)

And this is with normal/low terrain detail. Chernogorsk without grass gives me 60-120FPS and when i turn it on i have 20-45FPS. 20 is in town where some bushes plus a lot of grass is. Would love for some optimization in this area.Alex, I'm asking you because as far as I've read the posts it seems you achieve a very high performance, if not one of the best here.
So, under which setup environment (ingame setup, amounts of AI, start-up parameters) do you achieve 60 FPS and rising in Chernogorsk ? rig => your signature ?
Maybe your all-together-setup could be a reference in high end performance for the game, and so it would be a good information for (at least some of) us here in this testing forum ... :)

-exThreads=3 SEEMS TO MAKE THINgs smoother and textures loads a little faster. i also use cpucount = 4 is that needed here?My experience on my rig (specs below) is that '- cpuCount=4' doesn't change anything noticeable for me and my system: in windows taskmanager I couldn't detect anything different comparing to launch without this parameter. Seems to be logical for me, because of using quad core (why should the game has to be forced to use 4 cores when it uses them by default / by detecting the quad core). But there may be different experiences / knowledge ... so are there any different experiences / is there better knowledge ?
Yes, and thx to BIS for giving such plenty possibilities to test.

Can anybody confirm my speculation about the 'responsiveness' and efficiency of the AI? I swear something has improved...I've got the same impression comparing 1.05 & beta's of april/may 2010. AI has advanced some years of 'genetic evolution' actual vs. past versions of the game :D - this concerns enemy AI (infantry more clever, they really hunt the player like wolves, sometimes and it's more challenging to fight them) and player's subordinates (here the balancing between obeying and thinking for their own/for the squad seems to be more realistic and effective).

which drivers?

testing 10.6beta
@Dwarden, thx for info ...
but unfortunately I cannot find XP in the supported OS's:
ATI says: "ATI Catalyst 10.5a Hotfix for Windows 7 / Windows Vista 32-bit / 64-bit Edition" (reference: link of http://forums.bistudio.com/showpost.php?p=1638097&postcount=10)
the only hotfix that is for XP, too, is the AGP one (I'm running PCI-Card)
10.4a newer than 10.5, strange politics practiced by ATI imo
EDIT: found 10.6beta /XP32 (again thx Dwarden for Info), downloading and testing
... to be continued ...
