@MrN: Ya, I downloaded all the files for Duala last night, and will be installing them (assuming it's the same simple install method).
If there is conflicts with mods and the Panthera version I could still set up a separate shortcut icon to launch it without any other mods, right? (I'm new to the modding thing, so I'm not sure)
That sound mod you recommended in your post about Panthera is fine though, right? That would be my next (first) mod intall.
As far as that initart error... It happens when you quit the mission (and go back to the main menu). Harmless.

I'm curious... Did you consciously keep grass out of this map? If so, was it for optimization, or personal preference?
-
Hehehe... Ya, that's a great way to get your comment flamed!
No, I personally wouldn't want console-like graphic icons popping up all the time (..although, to be fair, Arma2 DOES have icons popping up for things like doors).
The system that is used now is fine.... but I'm simply suggesting that the key be one that you could hold down as you approach an obstical, so that once you 'hit' it, you climb over it... rather than stopping and trying to find the right spot to stand, then hitting it. Just would be more fluid.

Hi, MrN... That was the Panthera version. I'm coming from a vanilla Arma2 install, so I haven't really experienced all the improvments the mods have been providing. Only thing I had previous to this was a few maps, and that was just recently.
I had a few bumps installing your mission... first thing was that I was getting that CTD when trying to run it or even just the map (...and after some quick research, found that it was probably a conflict between it and the Duala map. I downloaded the latest foliage file, and that seemed to fix the CTD. However, when I then tried to run the Guerilla War mission, I got the error about not having the Little Birds installed (since I was vanilla). I was holding off installing anything that was a 'mod', in fear that I'd screw something up... but was intending on doing it soon anyway. But, I was relieved to see yours was an 'easy mod', where it has a separate folder, and just needs the modification of the parameter line of the Arma2 shortcut... So, I dove into that.
I read that a new version of Duala is coming out today, but hadn't seen it at the time of the install, earlier.
I DID get a few one-time errors that I should mention... Each was after a game ended. One was something about it not being able to find a foliage file... but not the one that I updated. Another one was complaining about some config file. Sorry, I don't have the specifics, but I'll make note of them if I run into them again.
Ya, I'm loving the mission... As I mentioned, the 'life' of it is great, and really adds to the immersiveness. I was always looking for a 'random, but interesting experience'. I had started off Arma2 with the Editor, making my own simple mission (random placement of my team, with a HUGE placement radius that spanned the island), and the Secop and Ambient Combat modules activated. That was all great, but I didn't have support options, as it was a little over my head. Then, someone pointed out the Mission Wizard (which I completely missed!), which gave me what I had coded already, plus the airstrike/transport/artillery support mine lacked. All that was even better... although I wished I could edit the mission a bit (change my gear, have random insertion point, etc)... so, I was recently planning on going back to the Editor, and maybe trying to code in the stuff that the Mission Wizard had.
But, then I thought, 'I should check if someone else did that already!'.... and that's how I found out about Guerilla War, and some of the other dynamic user made missions.
I'm dangerously close to installing some of the improvement mods.. as well as the ACE2 mod (...which I'm looking forward to, except that I fear I'll get my ass handed to me, due to the improved realism, and more complex nature of things).
Okay, well once again, amazing job... and very much appreciated. If I run into those errors again, I'll post info about them here.
Cheers

Relatively new to Arma2... Just bought it a few months ago. Played Mission Wizard stuff up to now, and enjoyed it (...I prefer random sessions, which is why I use the Wizard).
Someone over here pointed me to Guerilla War, so I loaded it up and just gave it a try.
After just a few minutes of playing, I have one thing to say....
$^#@&@ BRILLIANT!!!
Beautiful map
Fantastic ambient life (guys wandering, vehicals on road)... Makes a HUGE difference.
Looks like the the missions, etc are great so far!
Great interface (getting missions, getting rides)!
Solid work!... and that's only after me playing a few minutes... just scratching the surface.
But that alone was a really enjoyable little session. Looking forward to more!
Thanks to all involved!
[Dorky, but well-meaning double thumbs up gesture...]

UPDATE: Got Guerilla War working (after installing the required plugins... little birds, etc), and after just a few minutes of playing, I have one thing to say....

UPDATE: The CTD issue is the known conflict with Panthera and Duala... Getting closer, but there's still some issues. Looks like a new version of Duala is coming out today that might fix it.
[update update....]: Got all that fixed. Latest version fixes it, but I also fixed it previous to installing them by putting in the latest version of the foliage file (...the map packs themselves had older versions).
-
Nevermind... I think I'm on my way to getting things to work. It was that conflict between it and Duala.
Still a few issues happening, but it sounds like a new version is coming out today that fixes it.
-
Hey, Manzilla... If you're around, I tried running the Guerilla War: Panthera one, but it keeps CTD. I found that even the map itself causes a CTD (...I just downloaded the latest version).
Any theories on what might be causing that?

Here's an odd and potentially stupid question....
I've downloaded a few of the recommended maps, but it seems like a lot of them are giving me errors. I can view the contents using TUGZip fine, but when I try and extract them, I get a 'Can't read from source disk' type of error...
Is this Windows dicking me around with it's overzealous security, or is it possible the file is corrupt... or what? Again, I can view the file fine... just can't seem to extract it.
Any ideas? I'm re-downloading the maps in the meantime...
(One theory... maybe TUGZip has issue with .7z files... even thought it SEEMS to support them.)
---------- Post added at 08:36 PM ---------- Previous post was at 08:31 PM ----------
For those of you following along... It appears TUGZip has issues with .7z files. I used the Windows extract function (...didn't even see it there! That's a rare moment of convenience!), and it seems to have extracted it fine.
Okay, looks like I'm good.
Thanks for dropping by....
---------- Post added at 08:56 PM ---------- Previous post was at 08:36 PM ----------
Aw, nuts... Even though the other .7z maps seem to work, I get error messages (and CTD) with the Pantera map... which is actually the one I was really hoping to get, as I need it to play Guerilla War.
Anyone else have that map CTD on them? Any advice?.... Anyone just want to mock me while I'm struggling? ;)
-
Ah, it would be the supersonic ones then. Ya, my first instinct was that it was trees being hit, but something just didn't seem to jive, so part of me thought it might be something else... so, I figured I'd ask.
Cool... Thanks.

Ya, that's how I started playing Arma2.... In the editor... Secop and Ambient Combat running... One team, with a HUGE random placement circle (size of island). A bit later, with the help of one of the other users here, I was able to add an A-10 and Huey that sat at the airport (not part of my team), and could be called in (as part of my team temporarily) via radio command. That way, I could do a sort of airstrike (since he was under my control for that moment), as well as have some transport. I could also dismiss them as well.
That all worked well, but when the Mission Wizard was pointed out to me (which had all that, plus the ability to use ALL support types... all already coded for me), I switched over. Been playing that ever since.... but, the inability to edit it much (different starting weapons, random insertion point, etc) was a bit of a letdown... So, now I'm looking at the editor again... and was hoping someone already coded a dynamic mission. Looks like I'm in luck!
-
Cool. Okay, I grabbed the Flashpoint one.
I'll look for the Guerrilla War one as well.
Looked for the Domination one on Armaholic, but was confused by all the different versions. Is it Multiplayer only? If not, which version do I download? I'm running (currently) the vanilla install of Arma2.
Ya, not looking for anything too huge... Just me and my team wandering around, having to be careful, as enemies could be near... and the ability to use support stuff. That's all I need!
(The ability to edit it, too, would be great.... which is why I'm now going back to the editor, rather than staying in the Mission Wizard)
---------- Post added at 11:04 PM ---------- Previous post was at 10:51 PM ----------
Ooooo... Just checked out a YouTube vid for Guerrilla War by MrN.... That's looking pretty damn sweet.
There's some new (to me at least) stuff there... like the fast ropes, and seemingly new menu commands. Always good!....
-
Hrmm... I heard the Domination name being thrown around. Didn't know it was a random thing. Cool. I'll look into those. Thanks!
-
Real easy one... That little cracking sound, like pebbles being thrown at a brick wall... That's bullet hits near your, right? I'm 99% sure it is... Just figured I'd ask, in case it's something else... like the sound of gunfire or something.
-
Drove around in a truck for a while, went down the road south of the Secure and Hold waypoint, turned around, headed back towards town, and suddenly (after an hour of play), I get the victory screen!
Well, there you go....
-
I've created a mini random mission thing in the editor.... with a single team (mine) randomly placed on the map, and the ambient combat and Secop modules... plus a Huey and A-10 standing by at the airport, that can be temporarily made to join my team so I can do a sort of airstrike and pickup support of sorts.
I've been playing the MyMission: Combat (Mission Wizard) mission, which is great, but I would love to change a few things... so now I'm looking at going back to the editor, but would have to learn how to code in all the various supports and stuff... which I would really rather not spend my time on if possible.
So, the obvious question.... Has anyone already created a RANDOM mission creator in the editor? Basically something where you are placed randomly on the island, the Secop and Ambient Combat modules running (unless you have something better coded), and all support options (airstrike, transport, medical, etc) are present.
Secop missions are not completely critical... as long as there's random enemies all over the map.
Figured I might just ask and save myself all the studying and coding....
BTW, sorry if this should be in the Editor section... Wasn't sure if you'd consider this a Mission or an Editor thing... kinda both, really.... But, since I'm not asking HOW to do it, I figured it should be in the 'premade user missions' section.
-
Within the 8:30 deadline, I think... I didn't check the time until a bit after wandering around, wondering why it wasn't ending... but even then, it was only 8:37 or something.
I'm playing it now, trying to see what I can do.
Why does it seem like other people are talking about 'their' armour and helicopters and stuff? Is there the ability to call in these? All I know of is the airstrike... and the two groups of friendly soldiers that just stand there on the borders. Am I missing something here? All I have is my fireteam, and the airstrike.
---------- Post added at 07:01 PM ---------- Previous post was at 06:49 PM ----------
Okay, this is wacky....
I just grabbed a truck with my one remaining teammate, and drove around... hoping to maybe catch some fire from a hiding enemy so at least I could find him. I drove all over the place, then ended up taking the road south from the 'Seize and Hold' waypoint. Drove down there a bit, then turned around and started heading back to the town. Suddenly, the victory window appears!
Duration of play (according to the window) 1 hour 4 minutes.
Take from that what you will....
Moving on to the next mission.... ;)
-
Nah, restarted it... As you say, my old saves don't work.
No biggie... as I see others are faced with the same issue. I'll just try doing a wide sweep of the area. The town itself seems clear, but there may be some guy running out in the forests.
Probably too an issue with perhaps the lazing... I didn't destroy the armour with the laser designator method... I just called in an airstrike... so, maybe a trigger thing there?
But, the first time I played this mission, I DID use the laser designator...
Okay, stupid question.... Do I do anything with the other troops/armour that are on the map (to the north and east)? They just seem to be standing there, but as far as I know, I don't have any control of them. Starting to get the feeling they need to be called into the town or something.
Again, no biggie... Just wondering if there's something obvious that I'm failing to do.
-
Well, ya... but be fair... This subject could go under 'Official Missions', or 'Troubleshooting' or even 'General'...
Probably a stray enemy, like you say... although it may also be that I lost 2 of my guys (...damn guys wouldn't listen to me when I told them to retreat back to me!)... so the 'heavy casualties' criteria must have been failed... although it doesn't tell you you failed.
Seems like some people can't finish it AFTER patching to 1.05!
-
Same issue here too. Wish I had answers for you (and myself!).
My only guess would be that I lost some of my men, so I fail the 'heavy casualties' criteria?
Still, it's odd that it doesn't tell you you failed... Just kind of keeps going and going, and you have no clue what to do.
Ya, probably some enemy guy hiding in the woods, running up against a tree or something too...
-
Hi. In the (non-campaign) mission where you come in from the north and have to secure the town (I think it's the 4:Village Sweep one), I reach the 'secure and hold' area, and SEEM to have killed all the enemies, yet I can't seem to trigger a victory (...or failure, for that matter). I seemed to have done it before the 8:30 deadline, but now I just stand there, trying to trigger SOMETHING... win or lose.
Anyone have any experience with this Scenario? I'm patched up to 1.05, so I would assume any trigger bugs have been dealt with.
Do I just assume I failed, and start over? Or, is there something specific I need to do to trigger an end?
This is the second time this has happened to me. Just can't seem to figure out how to end it.
-
Alrighty... I'll have a look when I have a nice chunk of time. I've certainly learned a lot since I first started, so maybe it'll be a bit more clear.
I think part of the problem with the usual code samples was that I was never clear on WHERE to put them! In some samples I was shown, it never indicated where the code actually goes. It was like it was an assumed/understood thing, but I wasn't in that crowd.
I guess I'll let you know if I get snagged on something. Thanks.
-
Hrmmm.... Thanks for those links. Interesting read.
Ya, I kind of figured it was battling textures... probably at a point where it's not sure whether to use the near or far texures (hi or low res)... not that I'm much of a 3D programming expert.
Shame to see that the people on those posts are disappointed in the lack of apparent feedback. Not exactly a gamestopper, but does pull you out of the moment for a bit.
Ah, well... at least I know the name they call it now!
-
Ya, I've seen that page... It's a bit overwhelming for me, at my current level of scripting comprehension.
I also had a Huey and A-10 coded in to join my team temporarily via radio command, which gave me a sort of 'airstrike/transport' support thing... kinda....
I know it all can be coded in, but spending all this time, researching, experimenting, learning and understanding it all is a bit much. Seems with every addition of code, there's a lot of tweeking, problem solving, etc... and I just have better things to do.
If it were easier (for me), I'd do it... but I just can't invest that much time to sort through why things aren't working the way they should, reading through endless online discussions, etc.
That's why I was glad to find the Mission Wizard, where someone coded it all for me.
But, ya, ideally I'd love to get that functionality (airstrikes, etc) into the Editor, so I could further add to it, as I learn things.
I may look at it again... It's just a bit much for me to all take in. I want to play, not screw around with code that I don't really understand, for weeks, and get frustrated.
Thanks for the link. I'll look into it again sometime.
Recommended/needed mods beyond ACE2?
in ARMA 2 & OA - GENERAL
Posted
Okay, me again after a lot of time has passed.
I'm now looking into mods to install, but I'm still a bit torn... Seems like there's a lot of different opions on what is good.
ACE2 is a no-brainer, so let's assume that I'm installing that. That being the case, what other mods would you guys say IN ADDITION to ACE2? I just don't want redundant mods that address stuff that ACE2 addresses (successfully) already.... unless they are significantly better.
Also, for now, I'm looking for 'sensible, realistic' mods that either fix flawed things, make sounds/graphics more realistic, etc.... so please, no 'cool, but ultimately silly/unrealistic' type mods.... for now at least(!).
As far as audio... It looks like either HiFi or Chammy(?).... Any opinions on these (or one that's better)? Does ACE2 not address audio?
Zeus AI seems like another must have, as far as I can see from the posts... so that'll go in.
Is GL4 redundant to that then, or addresses other stuff?
Sorry, I know many of you have responded, and I'm noting all your answers... I just wanted to see what the current opinion is (now that time has passed).
