    World Politics General

The Arab Winter (The Economist) Five years after a wave of uprisings, the Arab world is worse off than ever. But its people understand their predicament better. On January 14th those protesters forced Zein al Abidine Ben Ali, Tunisia’s dictator for the previous quarter-century, from office. What followed was not easy But in 2015 the country became the first Arab state ever to be judged fully “free†by Freedom House. There were six Arab countries in which massive peaceful protests called for hated rulers to go in the spring of 2011. None of the other uprisings came to a happy end. * Libya and Yemen have imploded, their central states replaced in whole or part by warring militias, some backed by foreign powers, some flying the flags of al-Qaeda or Islamic State. * Egypt and the island kingdom of Bahrain are now yet more autocratic, in some ways, than when the protests began. * And Syria has descended into an abyss. Half its cities lie in ruins, much of its fertile land has been abandoned; millions have been displaced within the country, millions more have fled beyond it; hundreds of thousands have died; there is no end in sight. * With the exception of its far east and west—the oil-rich Gulf and quietly prospering Morocco, aloof behind a border with Algeria that has been sealed for 21 years— the rest of the Arab-world does not look much better. * Iraq’s Shia south and Kurdish north and north-east are, in effect, separate countries, while in the war zone of its Sunni-dominated west the fearsomely brutal rule of the so-called Islamic State has taken root. * The Algerians and Sudanese have emerged from civil wars to find themselves still beholden to opaque and predatory army-backed cliques. * Palestinians, divided into rival cantons, are weaker and more isolated than ever. * Jordan remains an island of calm preserved through fear: both the kingdom’s own people and the donor countries that prop it up are too spooked by the chaos buffeting its borders and flooding it with refugees to talk much of political reform. @ The "Arab Spring" did happening in more countries which are not mentioned in this press article, often quickly violently suppressed: i.e. * Bahrain * Oman * Kuwait * Saudi Arabia * United Arab Emirates https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arab_Spring In short, Arabs have rarely lived in bleaker times. The hopes raised by the Arab spring—for more inclusive politics and more responsive government, for more jobs and fewer presidential cronies carving up the economy—have been dashed. The wells of despair are overflowing. ......continue reading the article. Economist

    Islamic State (ISIS/ISIL/Daesh) Discussion

Suicide bomber kills 10 people, mainly Germans, in Istanbul (Reuters, Jan. 12) A suicide bomber thought to be from Syria killed at least 10 people, many of them German tourists, in Istanbul's historic heart on Tuesday, an attack senior security officials said was probably planned by Islamic State. President Tayyip Erdogan condemned the bombing in Sultanahmet square, near the Blue Mosque and Hagia Sophia, major tourist sites in the center of one of the world's most visited cities. He said a Syrian was thought responsible and that the blast would only harden Turkey's resolve in fighting terrorism. Sources in Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu's office said most of those killed were Germans and he had spoken by phone with Chancellor Angela Merkel to express condolences. Merkel earlier said she was very worried Germans might be among the victims. Reuters

Syria - What should we do if anything?

Most Syrian rebels sympathise with Isis, says thinktank (The Guardian, Dec. 20) More than half of the rebel fighters in Syria who are opposing President Bashar al-Assad are sympathetic to Islamic State views, a leading thinktank has claimed. The Centre on Religion and Geopolitics said efforts to wipe out Isis in Syria and Iraq would not end the global threat from jihadi groups because extremist views were common among Syrian fighters of all stripes. About 60% of fighters in rebel factions in Syria identified with a religious and political ideology similar to that of the terror group, it added. The thinktank, run by the Tony Blair Faith Foundation, said: “The west risks making a strategic failure by focusing only on IS. Defeating it militarily will not end global jihadism. We cannot bomb an ideology, but our war is ideological.†It added: “If Isis is defeated, there are at least 65,000 fighters belonging to other Salafi-jihadi groups ready to take its place." “The greatest danger to the international community are the groups that share the ideology of Isis, but are being ignored in the battle to defeat the group. “While military efforts against Isis are necessary, policy makers must recognise that its defeat will not end the threat of Salafi-jihadism unless it is accompanied by an intellectual and theological defeat of the pernicious ideology that drives it.†http://www.theguardian.com/world/2015/dec/20/most-syrian-rebels-sympathise-with-isis-says-thinktank

Mystery over legend continues There is no "Nazi gold train" Scientists reject claim by amateur treasure hunters that a train laden with gold, jewels, weapons and stolen art is hidden in railway embankment. After the Polish army cleared the railway embankment, the scientists from the mining academy used magnetic field detectors, thermal imaging cameras and radars to scan the spot where the enthusiasts claimed they had found a train hidden in a tunnel and sealed by exploded rocks. But the treasure hunters, Piotr Koper and Andreas Richter, attempted to keep speculation alive on Tuesday, telling the press conference they had found further evidence of the train’s existence. “There is no train,†Prof Janusz Madej of the Polish mining academy told a press conference in the city of Wałbrzych. The conference was attended by dozens of journalists and television crews who began following the gold train story after the treasure hunters made their claim in August. “The geo-magnetic model anomalies would be far greater if there was a train,†he said. http://www.theguardian.com/world/2015/dec/15/there-is-no-nazi-gold-train-polish-scientists-say

Kerry Calls for Common Ground With Russia on Syria, Ukraine (NYT, Dec 15) The United States and Russia need to find "common ground" to end Syria's civil war and restore stability in eastern Ukraine, U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry said Tuesday. Kerry praised Moscow for having been "a significant contributor to the progress that we have been able to make" on Syria and said the U.S. and Russia both believe the Islamic State group must be eliminated. "Russia and the United States agree that this is a threat to everybody, to every country," he said. "They are the worst of terrorists. They attack culture and history and all decency. It leaves no choice but for civilized nations to stand together, to fight and destroy them." http://www.nytimes.com/aponline/2015/12/15/world/europe/ap-eu-russia-us.html?_r=0

US Media (CNN)reports (Dec. 7) What in the World: Poland's dangerous turn Is one of America's main allies marking "in the direction of a dictatorship"? Fareed takes a look at Poland's recent turn towards authoritarianism. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tSiCGkULAHQ Another example from the Washington Post from Nov. 29 (opinion): Poland’s disturbing tilt to the right Kaczynski, like Hungary’s Viktor Orban, is the product of an ugly pre-World War II populism, frozen and preserved through the communist era, that mixes xenophobia, anti-Semitism, right-wing Catholicism and autocratic impulses. Conspiracy theories rule. On its fifth day in office, the government pushed through the appointment of five new judges to the Constitutional Court, without hearings or debate. Liberal Poles are calling this a creeping coup d’etat. Perhaps they are overreacting. But the message for those who assume that leaders such as Angela Merkel and François Hollande will forever rule Europe is: Watch Warsaw. https://www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/polands-disturbing-tilt-to-the-right/2015/11/29/480341e0-952a-11e5-8aa0-5d0946560a97_story.html it is not that strong in the german media but you can read about it aswell if you search, but its just a comment (opinion). Comment on Hungary and Poland European values are laid to rest (google transl. Berliner Zeitung) Brussels - What Viktor Orban operates in Hungary for years, the right-wing populists in Poland now want to imitate. For European democracy that interpretation of the rule of law is more dangerous than the terror of the Islamic State. In Paris the European values have been attacked by the assassins of the Islamic State, but in Budapest and now in Warsaw they are laid to rest. Right-wing populist Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán government does it for years- the reconstruction of the country in an authoritarian state - now the newly elected right-wing Polish Government tries it under the leadership of party chairman Jaroslaw Kaczynski. The Hungarian parliament deposed de facto its Constitutional Court two years ago. The Polish government party now declares the Constitutional Court fall prey for it and in an unconstitutional law the choice of five constitutional judges by the previous Parliament unconstitutional. The basic values of the European Union are formulated in Article 2 of the EU Treaties: "The values on which the Union is founded, respect for human dignity, freedom, democracy, equality, rule of law and respect for human rights including the rights of persons, belonging to minorities. Of refugees as well as the homeless - - In Hungary, where human rights are trampled on, the Constitution State made a mockery; Poland is ruled by paranoid nationalists who maintain the rule of law for a conspiracy. From Hungary and Poland Europe face a greater risk than the killer squad of the Islamic State. http://www.berliner-zeitung.de/politik/kommentar-zu-ungarn-und-polen-europaeische-werte-werden-zu-grabe-getragen,10808018,32684122.html @understandable if the poles feel pissed off about such "demonizing". Iraq (current news/events)

Turkey refuses to withdraw troops sent to north Iraq base (The Guardian, Dec 7) Iraqi government says it will take matter to UN after Ankara deploys large and heavily armed contingent near frontline in fight against Isis. Turkey has said it will not withdraw hundreds of soldiers who arrived last week at a base in northern Iraq, despite being ordered by Baghdad to do so within 48 hours. The arrival of such a large and heavily armed Turkish contingent in a camp near the frontline has added yet another controversial deployment to a war against Islamic State fighters that has drawn in most of the world’s major powers. Ankara says the troops are there as part of an international mission to train and equip Iraqi forces to fight against Isis. The Iraqi government says it never invited such a force, and will take its case to the UN if they are not pulled out. Washington, which is leading an international coalition against Isis that includes Turkey, Arab states and European countries such as Britain and France, has told the Turkish and Iraqi governments to resolve the standoff, and says it does not support deployments in Iraq without Baghdad’s consent. The Turkish presence is an embarrassment for the Iraqi prime minister, Haider al-Abadi, who is under pressure from powerful Iran-backed Shia political groups to kick the troops out. Shia parties linked to militia groups armed and funded by Tehran have also complained about US plans to station special forces in Iraq to conduct raids and guide bombs against Isis. Political pressure on Abadi could make those plans more difficult to carry out. “Turkey seems to be angling to prove to the Russians and Iranians that they will not be allowed to have either the Syrian or Iraqi war theatres only to themselves,†said Aydın Selcen, a former consul general of Turkey in Irbil, the capital of Iraq’s autonomous Kurdish region. “It is our duty to provide security for our soldiers providing training there,†the Turkish foreign minister, Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu, said in an interview on Turkey’s Kanal 24 television. “Everybody is present in Iraq ... The goal of all of them is clear. Train-and-equip advisory support is being provided. Our presence there is not a secret.†Abadi has called the Turkish deployment a violation of Iraqi sovereignty. An Iraqi government spokesman, Saad al-Hadithi, said Baghdad was still waiting for Ankara to respond officially. http://www.theguardian.com/world/2015/dec/07/turkey-refuses-to-withdraw-troops-from-north-iraq-base-isis

(Title is part of the content) Campaign against ISIS: U.S. Pilots have fired weapons in less than half of the nearly 18,000 sorties (CNN, Dec 7) The U.S. is running out of bombs to drop on ISIS The U.S. Air Force has fired off more than 20,000 missiles and bombs since the U.S. bombing campaign against ISIS began 15 months ago, according to the Air Force, leading to depleted munitions stockpiles and calls to ramp up funding and weapons production. "B-1s have dropped bombs in record numbers. F-15Es are in the fight because they are able to employ a wide range of weapons and do so with great flexibility. We need the funding in place to ensure we're prepared for the long fight," Welsh said in the statement. "This is a critical need." The bombing campaign has left the U.S. Air Force with what an Air Force official described as munitions depot stocks "below our desired objective." American pilots have fired weapons in less than half of the nearly 18,000 sorties they have in the first 10 months of 2015, according the latest figures available. That's up from 2014, when pilots fired their weapons just one third of the time. http://edition.cnn.com/2015/12/04/politics/air-force-20000-bombs-missiles-isis/index.html @ In other words the U.S. Airforce did wake up after Russia started its bombing campaign ? The first russian airstrikes did start at the end of September, 2015. How is it to understand that up to less than the half of all bombing raids against the IS did happen without any weapon use.....suddenly they find targets ?

Syria - What should we do if anything?

Syria Blames U.S. in Base Bombing, but Americans Blame Russia (NYT, Dec. 7) Syria on Monday said a United States-led coalition had bombed a Syrian military base in the east of the country, killing three soldiers, wounding at least 13 and destroying vehicles and equipment. The United States denied the Syrian accusation and said a Russian warplane appeared to have been responsible. The statement said that the bombing had been conducted Sunday evening in Deir al-Zour Province, and that Syria had sent letters of protest to the United Nations calling the bombing “a heinous aggression by the coalition.†American military officials said the coalition had carried out airstrikes in the province on Sunday, but they said no Syrian military positions had been struck. A statement from the United States-led Combined Joint Task Force said that the coalition had conducted four airstrikes on Sunday, “all against oil well heads,†about 35 miles from the base. “We did not strike any vehicles or personnel targets in this area,†the statement said. “We have no indication any Syrian soldiers were even near our strikes. A senior United States official later attributed any deaths and any damage to the Syrian base to what he called “a screw-up†by the Russians, who joined the Syria war in September as allies of Mr. Assad and have conducted airstrikes with Backfire bombers and other aerial armaments. “We’ve got a radar track showing a Backfire bomber flying directly over the town that the Syrians named a few minutes before the first claims that we killed some Syrian troops,†the American official said, speaking on the condition of anonymity to discuss operational details. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, an independent monitoring group that tracks the conflict from Britain through a network of contacts on the ground, also reported on Monday that American coalition airstrikes apparently had hit a Syrian military post on Sunday near Ayyash, in the western part of Deir al-Zour. “Both President Putin and Russian officials at various levels repeatedly emphasized our belief that an effective counteraction against these dangerous developments is only possible on the platform of a united coalition and an absolute coordination of any joint efforts,†Mr. Peskov said in comments reported by Russia’s Interfax news agency. http://www.nytimes.com/2015/12/08/world/middleeast/syria-airstrikes.html?_r=0

Biden urges Russia to fulfil Ukraine peace deal, return Crimea (yahoo/AFP; Dec. 7) US Vice President Joe Biden said Monday that Washington remained fully determined to see Russia adhere to a shaky Ukrainian peace agreement and hand back Crimea to Kiev. The war-scarred nation now fears slipping off the global radar due to recent international efforts to enlist Russia in a joint fight against the Islamic State (IS) group in Syria and Iraq. But Biden brought a message of reassurance. "The US stands firmly with the people of Ukraine in the face of continued, I emphasise, continued aggression from Russia and Russian-backed separatists," he told Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko. "The invasion by Russia of Crimea will not be accepted by us or by the international community. This attempted annexation is contrary to international law, is wrong, and will not be accepted in any circumstance," he said. ...the situation changed when Russia began launching ferocious air strikes against Syrian President Bashar al-Assad's foes on September 30. Washington has accused Putin of trying to prop up Assad by targeting Syria's Western-backed rebels instead of extremist groups. - The 'cancer' of corruption - Biden also spoke out on the issue of graft in a country of 40 million where morale is sagging due to Poroshenko's seeming inability to tackle the corruption that has plagued Ukraine for much of its recent history. ->Poroshenko's prosecutor general has been accused of blocking investigations and hiring workers who have since been detained with huge stashes of gold and cash in their flats. http://news.yahoo.com/russia-must-fulfil-ukraine-peace-deal-hand-back-153808711.html

    Islamic State (ISIS/ISIL/Daesh) Discussion

German Vice Chancellor warns Saudi Arabia over Islamist funding (Reuters, Dec. 6) German Vice Chancellor Sigmar Gabriel urged Saudi Arabia on Sunday to stop supporting religious radicals, amid growing concern among some lawmakers in Berlin about the funding of militant mosques by the world's biggest oil exporter. The unusual criticism of the Gulf state follows a report by Germany's foreign intelligence agency which suggested that Saudi foreign policy was becoming more "impulsive". "....we must at the same time make clear that the time to look away is past. Wahhabi mosques are financed all over the world by Saudi Arabia. In Germany, many dangerous Islamists come from these communities," he said. Saudi Arabia follows the ultra-conservative Wahhabi form of Islam, and some outsiders see it as a cause of the international jihadist threat. Another senior Social Democrat, Thomas Oppermann, also homed in on Saudi Arabia, saying Wahhabism offered a ideology for IS insurgents and contributed to the radicalization of moderates. Germany is worried about growing support for Salafism. The domestic intelligence agency says the number of Salafists has risen to 7,900, up from 5,500 just two years ago. "We don't need or want it in Germany," he told the weekly Welt am Sonntag. http://www.reuters.com/article/us-saudi-germany-idUSKBN0TP0H720151206 German spy agency warns of Saudi intervention destabilizing Arab world (DW & TT) Germany's foreign intelligence agency BND has released a disparaging report on Saudi Arabia. Their assessment says the country is destabilizing the Middle East with proxy wars in Yemen and elsewhere in the region. Internal power struggles and the desire to emerge as the leading Arab power threaten to make the key Western ally a source of instability, according to the BND intelligence service. "The careful diplomatic stance of older members of the Saudi royal family has been replaced by an impulsive policy of intervention," the Bundesnachrichtendienst (BND) said. The spy agency accused bin Salman, second in line to the throne, and his father, King Salman, as trying to create an image of Saudi Arabia being the leader of the Arab world. The BND added that bin Salman's quest to cement his place in the nation's leadership could also irritate other members of the royal family. Since King Salman's succession to power in January 2015, there's been a more forceful response to the regional standoff between Iran and Saudi Arabia largely set in motion by Prince Mohammed. The BND said that this could mainly be observed in Saudi Arabia's military intervention in Yemen as well as its increased support for Syrian rebels in a bid to remove Syrian President Bashar al-Assad. The overthrow of Syria’s president Bashar al-Assad remains a priority for the kingdom, the BND says. Saudi Arabia has previously been accused of supplying arms and funding to jihadist groups fighting in Syria, including Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (IS) http://www.dw.com/en/german-spy-agency-warns-of-saudi-intervention-destabilizing-arab-world/a-18889664 http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldnews/middleeast/saudiarabia/12029546/Saudi-Arabia-destabilising-Arab-world-German-intelligence-warns.html?utm_source=dlvr.it&utm_medium=twitter

    Islamic State (ISIS/ISIL/Daesh) Discussion

If only arab countries would follow this example.... World's Largest Islamic Organization Tells ISIS To Get Lost (Huffington, Dez 2nd) A 50-million strong Sunni movement in Indonesia just launched a global anti-extremism campaign. Each time the Islamic State, al Qaeda or another terrorist group commits violence in the name of Islam, a familiar refrain arises: What's the Muslim world doing about it? In fact, anti-extremism efforts abound in the global Muslim community: Muslim Leaders and scholars have denounced the Islamic State group, the U.K.'s Muslim Youth League has declared "ideological holy war" against extremism, and YouTube has even tried to recruit American Muslims to counter extremist content. And in Indonesia, home of the world's largest Muslim population, a massive anti-extremism movement is underway. Nahdlatul Ulama, or NU, is the largest independent Islamic organization in the world, with 50 million members. Part Sunni religious body, part political party and part charity, it was founded nearly 90 years ago, in 1926, as a response to another Sunni movement, Wahabbism. Wahhabism is the ultra-conservative reform movement based in Saudi Arabia that advocates for puritanical laws from the time of Islam's origins. It rejects the modern notion of "religion as a purely private activity" and the separation of church and state. The Islamic State is highly committed to Wahhabi principles, using its religious textbooks and embracing its hardline tradition of killing unbelievers. NU's stated goal is to "to spread messages about a tolerant Islam in their respective countries to curb radicalism, extremism and terrorism," which, it claims, "often spring from a misinterpretation of Islamic teachings." It launched its global anti-extremism initiative in 2014. There are domestic concerns about NU's global ambitions, since there's still a need to counter extremism within Indonesia itself. The country has faced a number of deadly terrorist attacks in recent years, including on its beach resorts and luxury hotels. But NU says its campaign applies "equally to local radicals," according to the New York Times. Indonesia is home to one of the most liberal Muslim populations in the world. On Nov. 14, the Indonesian Ulema Council, the country's top Muslim clerical body, which includes NU, announced a plan to mobilize 50,000 preachers to spread moderate, or "Wasathiyah," Islam within Indonesia. http://www.huffingtonpost.com/entry/indonesian-muslims-counter-isis_565c737ae4b072e9d1c26bda?ncid=fcbklnkushpmg00000063

Iraq Demands Withdrawal of Additional Turkish Troops (WSJ, Dec. 5) Iraq’s government on Saturday demanded Turkey immediately withdraw additional military personnel deployed to train Iraqi Kurdish fighters near the Islamic State stronghold of Mosul. “This is considered as a grave violation to Iraq’s sovereignty and does not respect good neighborly relations between Iraq and Turkey,†Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi said. “Iraqi authorities call upon Turkey to withdraw immediately from Iraqi lands.†Iraq previously had said it rejected any military operation on its soil that isn’t coordinated with the government. Islamic State (ISIS/ISIL/Daesh) Discussion

Well, the linked news report describes the other 30% as the following: According to NCTC, of the 12,533 terrorism-related deaths worldwide, 8,886 were perpetrated by “Sunni extremists,†1,926 by “secular/political/anarchist†groups, 1,519 by “unknown†factions, 170 by a category described as “otherâ€, and 77 by “Neo-Nazi/Fascist/White Supremacist†groups. I think we agree that extremism is a general problem and not general muslims i.e. Shias or Sunnis. Wheras the "Shia Terrorism" had its heyday in the 80´s, the Iran is sponsoring Hezbollah and highly likely the Huthis in Yemen. The Hezbollah in Lebanon is mainly in conflict with Israel, founded after the Israeli Invasion in the early 80s. The whole international terrorism since 911 and most terror groups you hear regulary about around the world are salafists - thats just a fact.

It is rather not about normal muslims or sunnis/shias in general and their proportions, it is about terrorism organisations and ideology. The heyday of "Shia terrorism" was way back in the 80´s, nowadays two main extremist organisations exist which are the Huthis in Yemen and the Hizbollah in Lebanon. The major terror threat or well known organisations since 2001 are salafist groups like Al Qaeda, Islamic State, Taliban (Afghanista), Al Nusra (Syria), Boko Haram (Nigeria), Abbu Sayaf (Phillipines), Al Shaabab (Somalia), Jemaah Islamiyah (Indonesia), BRN-Koordinasi/RKK (Thailand), Sunni Muslim 'Extremists' Committed 70% of Terrorist Murders in 2011 http://www.cnsnews.com/news/article/sunni-muslim-extremists-committed-70-terrorist-murders-2011 4 Sunni Muslim Groups Responsible for 66% of All 17,958 Terror Killings in 2013 http://www.cnsnews.com/news/article/patrick-goodenough/4-sunni-muslim-groups-responsible-66-all-17958-terror-killings-2013
