  1. I did watch this really interesting documentary on TV today and thought maybe some of you have not seen it aswell... Excellent documentary about World War 1 and the impacts on the middle east nowadays, aswell involvements of european war parties in the sorrow of the arab population. Arab and european Historians are beeing interviewed... World War One in the Orient - through arab eyes World War One was four years of bitter conflict from 1914 to 1918. Called 'The Great War' and the 'war to end all wars', it is often remembered for its grim and relentless trench warfare - with Europe seen as the main theatre of war. But this was a battle fought on many fronts. There is a story other than the mainstream European narrative. It is not told as often but was of huge importance during the war and of lasting significance afterwards. Thousands of arabs were forced to fight along european western powers with the start of the war in 1914. In War Theaters of the Orient and even on european ground. Partially victims of barbaric war tactics: either they were victims of mustard gas or executed in the thousands. They fought as conscripts for the European colonial powers occupying Egypt, Morocco, Algeria and Tunisia - and for the Ottomans on the side of Germany and the Central Powers. The post-war settlement would also shape the Middle East for the next hundred years. In the turmoil of war many arab soldiers lost their lifes, moslems had to fight against moslems, the Ottoman Empire shattered. The countries in the near east were caught between fronts and ultimately partitioned by the colonial powers, regardless of their own history, cultural spheres or of its population. The documentary "World War One Through Arab Eyes" from the Al Jazeera network, shows how the conflicts nowadays in the near east up to the current civil war in Syria are founded and seed by european colonial power plays. ...more (overview/first TV broadcast in Germany) Phoenix AJ Part I Arab Troops to the Front (The Arabs) The first part reminds on around one million arab soldiers recruited by the Brits in Egypt, and around 250.000 soldiers from countries like Marocco, Algeria and Tunesia which were conscripted for World War 1 by France. Until nowadays it is broadly unkown, arab soldiers were fighting in Europe against the German Empire when in the same time a worldwide Jihad was spoken out against the Entente and the Ottoman Empire in alliance with the Central Powers. The Battle of Gallipoli was one of the bloodiest campaign and biggest defeat for the Allies in WW1, which tried to conquer the Ottoman Empire from this peninsula. Innitiated by the former First Lord of Admirality Winston Churchill and defeated by the later state founder Kemal Attatuerk. Resistance and protests did start against the colonial recruitments/conscriptions politics and uprisings were happening, despite it the majority had no choice and had to follow orders and fight. @)At the end of Part I they talk about arab POW´s and also about a camp in Germany with Korean and Vietnamese soldiers. As a side info: around 100,000 vietnamese conscripts from french Indo-China did take part in WW1; I could not find quickly infos about Korean ones - maybe someone else can contribute here.. Part II The Downfall of the Ottoman Empire (The Ottomans) The second part is about the decline of the Ottoman Empire and the history of the Ottoman-German relationship which led to the Treaty of Alliance between them in August 1914. World War 1 did offer an excellent possibility for european powers to orientate themself to the East, with the aim to conquer the Ottoman Empire and participate it amongst them. Ottoman troops had to fight against several opponents: against Russia in the Caucasus, against the Brits in Iraq and Egypt. Around one quarter of the Ottoman Empire population died due to the consequences of war - around the same amount of victims from France and Germany together.
  2. AFP did report about "thousands" of protester and on german TV first channel it was said that "ten thousands" did protest in the main city of Jemen. The video with a camera pan from the press agency AP shows the true dimension and size of the protests: Anyone from you can estimate the amount of people, lol ?

Every country has such emergency plans and recommandations for the population, isnt it. I think there is no need for panic buying or to be too much afraid. Already in 2004, one minister from the green party did recommand panic buying for emergencies in case of terror attacks and the changed security situation since 2001. It was critisized by the cabinet.... Today it was reported that the recommandations are outdated and updated ones will be released next week....lol ?
  6. Large numbers of Yemenis have taken part in a demonstration in the capital Sanaa in support of Houthi rebels and their allies, who control the city (BBC, Aug.) Demonstrators backed a new governing council announced by the rebels. --> Shortly afterwards, bombs were reported to have been dropped nearby by planes of the Saudi-led coalition backing the internationally recognised government. "Suddenly the Saudi jets started circling on top of us, and as always, we thought they would just fly by, just trying to scare the crowd," he said, speaking to the World Service's Newshour programme." The Saudis have been repeatedly criticised over civilian deaths in air strikes in Yemen. On Thursday the charity Medecins Sans Frontieres (MSF) said it was withdrawing staff from six hospitals in north Yemen after a coalition air strike hit one of its buildings, killing 19 people. The Saudi-led force has been carrying out air strikes in Yemen since March 2015 to try to oust the rebels and defend the internationally recognised government of President Abedrabbo Mansour Hadi. The UN says more than 6,500 people, mostly civilians, have been killed since then. It estimates that more than 80% of the population needs humanitarian aid. http://www.bbc.com/news/world-middle-east-37143876

Kissinger hindered US effort to end mass killings in Argentina (TheGuardian, Aug. 2016) Newly declassified files show the former secretary of state jeopardized efforts to crackdown on bloodshed by Argentina’s 1976-83 military dictatorship Former secretary of state Henry Kissinger jeopardized US efforts to stop mass killings by Argentina’s 1976-83 military dictatorship by congratulating the country’s military leaders for “wiping out†terrorism, according to a large trove of newly declassified state department files. During his years as secretary of state, Kissinger had encouraged Argentina’s military junta to stamp out “terrorismâ€. In contrast, Carter and Zbigniew Brzezinski, his national security adviser, made human rights a cornerstone of US foreign policy and were exerting pressure on Argentina’s military regime by withholding loans and sales of military equipment. Carter officials were infuriated by Kissinger’s attendance at the 1978 World Cup inArgentina as the personal guest of dictator Jorge Videla, the general who oversaw the forced disappearance of up to 30,000 opponents of the military regime. The cables also give a frightening picture of the delusional antisemitism prevalent among Argentina’s generals, who were convinced that Brzezinski (a Polish-born Catholic) headed a worldwide Jewish conspiracy against Argentina. more..... https://www.theguardian.com/world/2016/aug/09/henry-kissinger-mass-killings-argentina-declassified-files

Assassins in Germany had contact with IS in Saudi Arabia The perpetrators of recent attacks in Ansbach and Würzburg in Germany had contacts with suspected Islamic State members in Saudi Arabia, SPIEGEL has learned. Chat transcripts suggest one of the perpetrators may have been planning to strike again. Würzburg perpetrator Riaz Khan Ahmadzai, who is believed to have originated from Afghanistan and seriously injured several people on a regional train with an axe and knife on July 18, also left a goodbye message before engaging in the attack. "We'll see each other in paradise," he wrote. In chats conducted prior to the attack, an IS contact man suggested to the 17-year-old that he drive a car into a mass of people. The perpetrator rejected the suggestion, justifying himself by saying he didn't have a driver's license. Instead, Ahmadzai announced, he would board a train and attack the first passengers that are convenient. In the case of the other attack in Ansbach, committed by Mohammed Daleel of Syria, the authorities believe the perpetrator's death on July 24 was likely an accident. They think his intention had been to deposit a backpack carrying homemade explosives within a crowd at a music festival in the city before detonating it remotely. Shortly before the attack, his chat contact had called on him to film the detonation and the ensuing inferno and to send the video to IS.But it appears the explosive detonated prematurely, killing Daleel and injuring 15 others. There is discussion in the chats of Daleel perpetrating further attacks. more... http://www.spiegel.de/international/germany/attackers-in-germany-had-contact-with-suspected-is-members-a-1106271.html

.....worrying and very interesting video. Of course there was no nuclear threat by the Iran against Europe, that was just an attempt to widen out NATO/US influence in Europe. Its about first strike ability aswell.... As a side info: Interesting to see the coverage of the forward radar of such missile systems (2007) The THAAD system will be maybe deployed in Korea and we saw the reaction of China The Aegis Ashore forward radar has a much bigger coverage and is actually the mentioned NATO system deployed in Romania. First time in Germany an islamistic suicide bomber attack did happen.... Suicide bomber in Germany pledged allegiance to ISIS leader The Syrian suicide bomber who injured 15 people in a Sunday night attack on a music festival in Ansbach, Germany, left behind a video pledging allegiance to ISIS leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, Bavarian Interior Minister Joachim Herrmann said Monday. In the video left on a mobile phone, the 27-year-old Syrian announced his threat to carry out an attack "as an act of revenge against Germans, because they obstruct Islam," The man said the attack would be committed in the name of Allah as retaliation for the killing of Muslims. Germany´s Week of Violence * Ax train rampage 18 July - 5 injured (4 heavily injured) * Shopping mall shooting 22 July - 9 killed & 31 injured * Machete attack 24 July - 1 killed & 5 injured * Suicide Bomber 24 July - 15 injured Criticism of Merkel's immigration policy The bombing has rattled the German public following a week of violence in southern Germany that began on July 18, when an immigrant teen, apparently also inspired by ISIS, stabbed passengers on a train in Wurzburg in Bavaria. That was followed by a shooting spree Friday in which nine people were killed in the Bavarian state capital, Munich, before a Syrian asylum seeker killed a woman in Reutlingen (edit: and injured 5 people), in the neighboring southern German state of Baden-Wurttemberg, on Sunday, hours ahead of the Ansbach attack. The wave of violence has fueled criticism of Chancellor Angela Merkel's welcoming stance toward immigrants, with the hashtag #Merkelsommer, or "Merkel summer," circulating on social media. Germany accepted more than 1 million asylum seekers last year, and some Germans have expressed fears that terrorists might have entered the country among them, or that disaffected youths among the refugees could be susceptible to radicalization. http://edition.cnn.com/2016/07/24/world/ansbach-germany-blast/

I did not know the details of his name yesterday and wasnt sure after I read your post, but did google about it today Ali David Sonboly All three religions (Christianity, Judaism and Islam) share similarities and especially Judaism and Islam, thats why you find often similarities also in names (David/Daud/Dawud) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/David_in_Islam The incident has nothing in common with any islamistic terror attack. Though it had maybe a religous background. The perpetrator was allegedly mobbed by Turks/Arabs in Germany, (struggle between Shia and Sunnis ?). And mobbing was the reason he did buy a weapon (and going ramapge), like he said with its own words in one of the videos. Our societes are that sensitive in the meanwhile when any assault is happening for many a bitter taste stays if its proven and done by a muslim. And thats a problem and sad. In just a short time we have seen Nice, Kabul, Wurzburg, Munich and today Reutlingen.

Since the shooting is extraordinary the police said they have to assume the incident could be a terror attack, but the police did also report there are currently no signs about any islamistic terror attack. Its so far a deadly mall shooting. One of many private videos shows one perpetrator which is actually speaking fluently german and you can hear that he says he is german. No other more detailed infos about the perpetrators, allegedly three are on the run. The issue in this whole incident is actually that none of the perpetrators got caught or shot so far. Therefore the whole city Munich is on a standstill: people are asked to stay at home, streets are blocked, no public transport works and so on ... Live Stream about Munich Mall Shooting (SKY News)
  19. Saudi ties to 9/11 detailed in documents suppressed since 2002 AFTER YEARS OF political wrangling, the suppressed section of a 2002 congressional report that detailed possible ties between the Saudi government and the 9/11 terrorist attacks was released today. The classified documents have been the source of heated speculation for years, as they highlighted alleged links between high-ranking members of the Saudi royal family and the 9/11 hijackers. Many political figures who had previously seen the report led the charge calling for its release, including former Sen. Bob Graham, who said the 28 pages “point a very strong finger at Saudi Arabia,†and Minnesota Congressman Rick Nolan, who said the pages “confirm that much of the rhetoric preceding the U.S. attack on Iraq was terribly wrong.†“While in the United States, some of the September 11th hijackers were in contact with or received assistance from, individuals who may be connected with the Saudi government,†reads the report, which added that FBI sources believed at least two of those individuals were Saudi intelligence agents. While the report does not find any smoking gun pointing to official Saudi involvement, it does highlight one consistently troubling theme of the kingdom’s response to the attacks: its refusal to cooperate with investigators seeking to uncover information about the hijackers. more...... https://theintercept.com/2016/07/15/saudi-ties-to-911-detailed-in-documents-suppressed-since-2002/ Release of 9/11 report could strain US relationship with Saudi Arabia (TheGuardian) The ‘28 pages’ suggest larger connection between al-Qaida and Saudi royal family than previously reported as $89,000 was deposited to family of suspected spy The so-called “28 pages†suggest a much larger web of connections between al-Qaida and the Saudi royal family than had previously been known. The report – classified in December 2002 on orders of then president George W Bush – is almost certain to feed public suspicions that the Saudi government gave extensive support to Osama bin Laden before 9/11, and perhaps even directly to the 9/11 plotters themselves, as the US government looked the other way. Perhaps the most explosive passages in the 28 pages, part of a larger, otherwise unclassified congressional report on American intelligence blunders before 9/11, offer previously unknown information about the actions of a powerful figure in the Saudi royal family. Prince Bandar bin Sultan, who was his country’s ambassador to Washington for several years before and after 9/11 and was a close friend of Bush. According to the report, at least $15,000 went directly from Prince Bandar’s bank account in Washington to the family of a Saudi expatriate, suspected of being a Saudi government spy, who organized a support network in California for two of the 9/11 hijackers while they were living in San Diego in the year before the attacks. The report also reveals that a phone log maintained by Abu Zubaydah, a senior al-Qaida operative captured in 2002 in Pakistan, included the unlisted phone number for a Colorado company that managed affairs at Prince Bandar’s home in the mountain resort city of Aspen, as well as the phone number for a bodyguard who worked under Bandar at the Saudi embassy in Washington. Investigators for both the congressional investigation and the 9/11 commission suspected, but were never able to prove, that much of that money ended up in the hands of the two hijackers in San Diego: Khalid al-Mihdhar and Nawaf al-Hazmi. The Saudi government has repeatedly denied that Prince Bandar and Princess Haifa had any suspicion that money from the family’s accounts might have been used in a support network for 9/11 hijackers. “The trail of evidence may be a little cold, but it’s time for a complete reappraisal of our relationship with the Saudis,†said Lehman, who said the Bush and Obama administrations had both failed to pressure the Saudi government to cut its ties to a fanatical, violent branch of Islam known as Wahhabism. “This is going to be a matter for the next president.†https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2016/jul/16/911-report-release-saudi-arabia-us-relations

  21. Triathlon: Frodeno breaks Ironman record Germany's Jan Frodeno has set a new world-best time for the Ironman triathlon. The reigning world champ bettered the previous mark by an astonishing margin of almost six minutes. 34-year-old Jan Frodeno's milestone performance came at the Challenge Roth event near Nuremberg in Southern Germany. He swam 3.86 kilometers, cycled 180 kilometers and ran 42.195 kilometers in only 7 hours, 35 minutes and 39 seconds. That shattered the old record of 7:41:33 set by Andreas Raelert in 2011. http://www.dw.com/en/triathlon-frodeno-breaks-ironman-record/a-19406252 http://triathlon.competitor.com/2016/07/race-coverage/frodeno-sets-world-record-challenge-roth_134378

    Turkey Coup D'Etat

The german SPIEGEL did release an article where the consultant of President Erdogan describes the incident in a report as a "Kamikaze Move" instead of a coup. One of the major Austrian newspapers "Der Standard" did release an article in which a turkish interviewee describes the coup with skepticism. -> It is said, that only small groups of Soldiers did capture the TV station or did attack the Presidential Palace. And allegedly even more absurd was the situation at the airport, just 100 soldiers encounter a multiple higher amount of police forces. Did you guys read about any information how many soldiers did actually take part in the coup action locally ? I did hear only about general arrests (~6000) and dismissals of judges/prosecutors. (~3000)

U.S. urges support of Turkey government as world watches coup attempt The United States called on all parties in Turkey to support President Tayyip Erdogan's government against a coup attempt as world leaders expressed concern about the upheaval in a NATO member country that bridges Europe and the Middle East. "The President and Secretary agreed that all parties in Turkey should support the democratically-elected government of Turkey, show restraint, and avoid any violence or bloodshed," the White House said in a statement. Turkey is a key ally for Washington which has often pointed to the country as a good example of a free-market democracy in the Muslim world, even though it has a poor record on freedom of expression. European Council President Donald Tusk..... "Turkey is a key partner for the European Union. The EU fully supports the democratically elected government, the institutions of the country and the rule of law," Tusk said at regional summit in Mongolia. http://www.reuters.com/article/us-turkey-security-reaction-idUSKCN0ZW01V?il=0
