Crash to desktop when joining a game

Ok so after much frustration and fun oddly enough.... last night playing this game in multiplayer i've noticed some trends with the crashing. So i started off joining someone elses server, everytime someone new joins the game CTD, everytime we use the release contro/take control option between pilot/co pilot CTD, everytime we leave the base and someone from my chopper get out, or if i'm on someone else's chopper get out we loose connection and CTD. Then another thing started happening all of a sudden, after so many CTD and i rejoin the game i started not being able to the start up the chopper.... any of them. I tried doing it manually and using the auto engine start feature to no avail. Sometimes the host has to restart the server and that might help, but i also noticed sometimes even after 3 restarts i still can't start engine. Then i suggested maybe i should host, so i booted up my own server with a different map, and guess what... Now the other guys can't start their engine, but after a couple of map restarts everything seems to be working fine. Then there was this a couple of guys that had trouble with constantly CTD with 4 other guys were able to stay connected and fly with the rest of us. Please do what you can to fix these BiS cuz this game is so fun even in the beta stages! Oh and of course fix the oddities with the FM too, we can't forget about that now can we?

    Skid awareness

hmmm there's no real way to teach you this, but just like parking a car, you know where the wheels are on your car so you just have to imagine where you need to drive to put your wheels on a certain spot on the road. basically you have to have a mental picture of the helicopter outside of the cockpit.
  3. so i just quickly did a new map with respawns with light and medium helos, server name is free flight w respawn md500enthusiast see you guys in there

    Game on helicopters: beta multiplayer

Lol if life was that simple, and yes of course i've tried that. But like in the arma series all missions have to be compiled into a PBO before the game will recognize it as a valid mission file, plus you have to put the file in the correct directory or it won't show up at all. Plus for respawns you have to have a certain script written out etc etc, so it's not THAT simple. I've tried to pbo a sqm mission file but alas it still didn't show up on the multiplayer mission selection. i'll do some more research once i get home from work in half an hour, but hopefully by then some arma guru has already made a perfect free flight mission for our enjoyment =D.

    Game on helicopters: beta multiplayer

well here's the crappy thing about multiplayer in beta. the only map available is a racing map that has no respawns. so if you want to fly again after you've crash you'd have to request for the host to restart the map or if you're the host you have to restart and everyone else who had more skills than you that didn't crash sudden gets booted from their pilot seat back into the lobby screen wondering wtf. also if you join the game after the race has started you will crash to desktop. so unless someone has made a free flight map that will actually show up in multiplayer mission selection we're pretty much screwed.

    Multiplayer maps

If i remember correctly, i think as in arma you need to PBO the mission files for it to show up on multiplayer screen.

    General Impressions

the helicopter handling is better, i see you guys have tuned down the ground effect quite a bit which is good, but still not exactly perfect. It should feel more like it cushions the descent rather than bouncing you up and that it'd require less power to hover when you're within 1 blade span of the helicopter blades off the ground. there is still this over exagerated right rolling tendency in foward flight. also while collective is full down on the md500 there's still not enough descent rate.

Petition for ToH FM implemented into Arma 3

This i must say is a dream come true, oh the unrealized dreams of all the noobs crashing their helos before even leaving the base and when someone that knows what they're doing comes along and show them how it's done. The untold glories of making that perfect landing on a rooftop to insert 4 delta force guys in record time and zipping away unharmed. The stories of how this helicopter pilot did the unthinkable and saves the day just in the nick of time and kegs of beer are brought into the hanger after the mission to celebrate. The fun of training other cadet pilots on how to do take off without dynamic rollover or pedal turns without drifting all over the place or how to properly do a shallow/normal/steep approach to a full stop without getting into settling with power, sigh..... I CAN'T WAIT TIL ARMA 3, HURRAY BiS!!!

New Video: Real life flying Part 2

Well as long as people are posting vids of them flying here's mine for how a helicopter should handle when doing autorotation, infact this is the first full down auto i've ever done in a hellicopter i've only had like 3 hours in(R44) i flew the r22 in training. Unlike in game where the helicopter rolls right in real life the helicopter doesn't roll that excessively but does have a translating tendency that feels like it's "drifting" right instead of the way exagerated roll in game. There's also a vid of me doing my first run on landing in R44 though i had a brain fart at first and my instructor corrected me just in time, i'm sure some of the more experienced pilots will spot it very early =D. Also as a note about how small the inputs on the controlls are in a real helicopter i don't think it's feasible to replicate that in a sim because in a real helicopter you have infinite definition in your controls where in a joystick for pc you don't. I think it's much better to program the controls where the larger movements will mimic the small movements we use so it doesn't feel overtly sensitive. Also notice how easily i loose airspeed without pitching up so excessively like we have to in the game, as it is right now it will make speed control during landings very difficult. Here's the full down auto Here's the run on landing Here's a vid of hovering autorotation Here's a vid of a normal approach to midfield where i turn into the taxiway and landing at our parking spot plus shutdown.

    Realism VS. Arcade style fun

Coming from a real life pilot, the switch flipping doesn't have to be spot on, just the basics for start up and shutdown and maybe some emergency protocols. Avionics aren't that neccessary because we'll be flying VFR (visual flight rules) like 95% of the time anyway. What does have to be realistic is how a helicopter handles, after playing the community preview 84444 or whatever there's still work to do with handling characteristics but i think it's a leaps and bounds ahead of what arma2 helicopter handling currently feels like. Another point that has already been made is the mission aspect of the game, unlike FSX or any of the other sims out there we should be given a purpose to fly the helo such as firefighting, transport, medivac, TV news, police chase that can be done with multiple helicopters in multiplayer. I've preordered the game as soon as i saw BiS is making this game because you guys continually make improvements to the game or at least make the game moddable so we have that freedom to change it to our likings. I see huge promise in this game and if you can implement the flight model into arma 3 then BiS will hold the title for best military sim/game for a very long time and potentially lead the way for other developers to follow in your foot steps for years to come. Pat on the back for a job well done so far BiS! I salute you!

How long till we these features in Arma

Oh BiS dear lord for all that is good and holy please implement the flight models of ToH into Arma 3. Though in single player you can choose the dumbed down FM or turn on realistic FM, but for multiplayer the server can either choose realistic or arcade FM and everyone in the server will be stuck with that option. This way you can please the simmers and the casual fans, it will also make this game so much more addicting and target a much broader audience. It's a win win situation for you guys! CHA CHING! Keep up the good work, BiS you're finally heading into the right direction as far as the helicopter modeling/handling is concerned. I've waited so long since FlashPoint to be able to fly my squad into combat in a helo and get that feeling that i've done something difficult and praise worthy and not many people can because flying a helicopter is suppose to be extremely difficult. I sincerely hope you guys will implement the FM of ToH into Arma 3, because it'll just make the game so much more immersive and richer. And just think about all the praise you will get from so many fans of sim and fps community, Arma 3 will become a gem in midst of mediocre cookie cutter games that so many other developers are dishing out each year. I've already preordered ToH and can't wait to see how Arma 3 will turn out and of course i'll preorder Arma 3 as well and buy any expansion you guys make for both games.

    "Real" pilot fly-in.

I'm in, i'm in the united states and it's 11:46pm here. Hopefully beta will be out once it's 12pm but some guys in Aus still haven't gotten their email for beta.
  14. Thanks for the info rubix. Also i just noticed another thing that i don't think anyone's mentioned, there's no altittude lost when banking without adding collective. Another thing is when adding collective there's not enough yaw/torque effect same as reducing collective. Also the md500 is fully articulated, and i don't see any signs of ground resonance when making hard landings.
  15. Ok my two cents, i played the community beta for a couple of hours and i do have a private license for helicopter, i've only flown the r22 and r44. There are several issues which already have been discussed, the right rolling tendency in level flight, the almost unresponsive rudder input, too much ground effect, no settling with power/vortex ring state, the shaking of the helicopter when entering ETL and losing ETL, the non existent descent when collective is full down, the excessive amount of bank required to turn the helicopter, being able to climb almost forever with no foward airspeed and full collective. I haven't really noticed low rotor rpm effects either but i haven't really paid too much attention to it, whenever you move the mouse cursor your POV also moves with the mouse and when you have track ir that's really annoying, in training helicopters there's always a trim string on the cannopy which would help a lot in terms of knowing when the helicopter is flying in trim because even though there's a slip indicator in the cockpit it seems it's not functional, also even though i've programmed my throttle on my x65f stick it doesn't work i still have to click the throttle button on my collective and it's either full or idle, there's also not tail wanning effects but maybe wind hasn't been implemented into the preview yet. What's most troubling for me is that it's pretty much impossible to make an autoroation landing that feels right. When i cut the power by either clicking the throttle to idle or by pressing the starter key which does the same thing in this game, the helicopter starts feeling VERY sluggish and rudder input doesn't really do much to help you fly in trim so as i'm descending i'm always flying a little side ways and when i flare it's rolling WAY too much to the right, i think they wanted to simulate translating tendency but a helicopter doesn't roll like that then as i touch down BAM dynamic roll over, what's funny is it doesn't roll over to the side but fowards LOL. Also airspeed is very tough to get rid of, i shouldn't have to pitch back so far to slow down but maybe that's just the md500 but i doubt it. You can youtube md500enthusiast on youtube of me doing autorotation during my r44 training.

    Patch 1.05 suggestions

Our computers are getting more and more advanced, so should our games. One of the major problems with arma aside from the poor performance and crashes is that with all the vehicles available, none of them make you feel like you're actually in one of them. This game is suppose to be a combat simulator right? Arma 2 should be a simulator in all aspects not just foot soldiering, even then it's not all that great. For example, when we go full auto with guns there's almost no bullet spread. There's no wind to affect bullet trajectory or the aircrafts that we fly, there's no temperature variation to affect soldier performance and vehicles and bullets. While wind will be implemented by Ace 2 mod even though it'll only affect the bullets, the game should've shipped with these features included. This game was targeted for the mature community that wanted realism. Then why all the dumbing down of the game to make it easier for people to play? For example, helicopter yaw rate in real life does affect the bank angle. I know this for a fact because I am a student helicopter pilot in a Robinson R22. But yet that feature that adds to the realism of flying helicopters (which is a big part of this game) has been taken away? If anything a start up/shut down procedure, torque, transverse effect and dissymetry of lift, settling with power, ground resonance should've been added to make it feel more real. Flying a helicopter is not suppose to be easy, if people wanted easy they should've played BF2. Making things more realistic has a two fold effect, it will eliminate the amatures from the guys that know what they're doing or at least has the capacity to learn to do it. So we don't get a bunch of kids flying in helicopters or driving tanks and what not and trashing bases or TKing. Because they wouldn't know the first thing about how to operate the machinery. This would also make the game that much more interesting to play, hold more value for the game and foster teamwork and a mature community that can take the game to newer heights.
