I would definitely be getting this. I may wait a month or two after release, but I think it's a huge step forwards when it comes to immersion. My only fear is... I jump high enough when a tracer hits my camera now, seeing that in 3D may be too much!

Separate options for DOF, Blur and Glare, Ambient Occlusion ?
sqb-sma replied to grandstack's topic in ARMA 3 - BETA DISCUSSION
Then use Very Low. All of that nice PP effects with no DOF! It just sucks that SSAO, Bloom, DOF and motion blur aren't separated options! -
TrackIR for Arma 3, some questions for existing users.

Yeah, it's very strange taking the TIR off, this is one of the first things I notice. I, too, always run weapon down eyes up in CQB. -
ARMA 3 base terrain textures WORSE than the original Operation Flashpoint
sqb-sma replied to SandboxPlaya's topic in ARMA 3 - BETA DISCUSSION
Thanks for the reply, I think I get it now. I see your ticket's status is now "assigned", that looks promising! -
3rd person is a cheap and unrealistic element, it should only be on for recruits. Too often I see videos of people playing 3rd person to peak around corners without physically being in the line of fire... that shouldn't be possible.

All I can say is: TrackIR is fantastic, and if you have the money there's no reason to keep playing without headtracking HOWEVER With Oculus Rift coming soon (a more elegant solution, arguably), the advantages of spending twice the price and getting a 3D screen which rotates which ever way you look (no need for acceleration) and very responsive headtracking will be far more worth it than TIR. I play with the SoundBlaster Arena Headset: http://www.ingame.de/files/2010/08/creative-sound-blaster-arena-surround-foto-1.jpg and the clip works fine, even with the thickness of the plastic. So I'd recommend you wait, if the Oculus Rift is awesome and you have the money, go for that, if you don't have the money I'm sure TIR5 prices will decrease dramatically to stay competitive. It's tough to stay patient, but in this case it's a bit of a necessity. -
Awww, is the alpha not polished enough for you? Poor bummikins, run home now. I'd reccomend playing at least alpha lite mate, see how it runs on your PC before you call it out. I've found it smoother, more polished and generally better to play than Arma 2, a worthy sequel in it's current state. To say I'm excited for release would be one hell of an understatement.

ARMA 3 base terrain textures WORSE than the original Operation Flashpoint

Adding my voice to this, that's a darn good system. How does this compare to adding a noise map? Is it the same thing with a different name or something else entirely? Many games recently have been adding noise maps to textures at a distance that's in between LODs. It seems to work very well (see War Thunder) -
Found it: http://forums.bistudio.com/showthread.php?139832-IAS-AKM-mechanics-simulation The lack of animations is one helluva turn off though

If this were in Arma... hoooly shit.

ARMA 3 base terrain textures WORSE than the original Operation Flashpoint

How did BF3 get those extremely high res ground textures from a distance? It may not have been a great game, but the graphics designers earned their pay! Whatever system that used I think that's what we should focus on. -
That low fps in first person whilst in vehicles is probably due to PIP (Picture In Picture). Try turning that down or off (it's a resource intensive setting, and fairly useless).

Most realistic water impacts I've ever seen

What does OPs post have to do with modding? -
Ping regardless, it's a symptom of server stress/computer stress. On singleplayer you'll get this if you have a particularly slow PC. On multiplayer this happens when the server is having trouble (especially in DayZ because it was very clumsy netcode wise)

Will Arma 3 Have Better Medical Equipment Like ACE2?

Tell me about it, the vanilla system makes me hate being a medic. -
Adding things to a ammocrate or supplybox ??
sqb-sma replied to Dennistp's topic in ARMA 3 - GENERAL
When spawning an ammo crate, under the name section write something (i.e. box1) and then in the description/initialisation field write box1 additemcargo item_name replace item_name with the actual item name. A thread about item names can be found here: http://www.armaholic.com/forums.php?m=posts&q=20801 -
Just to add to this, the MINIMUM frame time (i.e. maximum frame rate) for your brain to register sufficient information to form an image is 1/220 of a second (220fps). Past this point you'll only register differences in smoothness or responsiveness, you won't gain any more "visual smoothness". In other words, watching a movie at any more than 220fps in unnecessary, playing a game or interacting with anything you can push it until there is minimal response time, which is far beyond 220fps.

How do you drop equipment from inventory?
sqb-sma replied to Dangerdog's topic in ARMA 3 - BETA DISCUSSION
Left click and drag to ground (the ground menu is on the left hand side) OR right click the item, this will instantly drop/pick up any item selected. -
It will be imported when it's imported, the alpha has been out for 13 hours... I'm guessing it will be done within a month, until then you'll have to play some Arma missions, gasp! :D
-
I'm running a vaguely similar CPU, Q8400, and it's having a lot of trouble. If you're definitely going to play Arma3 when it releases/in a few months time then GO FOR IT, it's REALLY cheap at the moment. But you probably won't be able to play the game, at least not at all well, until your upgrade.

I've had a different experience regarding RAM, Planetside2 is almost always at the 3.2gb cap, leaving me no RAM to spare of my 4GB (I'm upgrading in the next fortnight) and Arma2 often spikes my PC to a total of 95% Ram usage. I think an extra 4gb (for 40 bucks, or 20 if you're on DDR2 like me) would be fairly worthwhile, it's cheaper than getting an SSD at least...
