    What Do We Know About The Ai?

    I'll be honest, I'm finding it hard to locate the Ai when operating in Tanoa's dense vegetation. And I don't mind admitting that like many I find it really frustrating when I'm pinned down and can't spot the Ai for no love or money. With that said, if I can't see them the through the dense vegetation, it begs the question how they can see me? 'What do we know about how the Ai works?' I'm sure this subject has been discussed many times before. But given Arma is an evolving project and the terrain of Tanoa is very different - having a lot more vegetation than other stock maps, I'd like to know the facts and to put to bed any myths about how the Ai operates and whether under certain conditions they have an unfair advantage over human players. I'd also like to know as Arma's Ai becomes more sophisticated and less clunky, is it making Ai add-ons redundant? or do they still have a purpose?
  2. I've been following the Syrian conflict since it started with both sadness and fascination to what tactics the warring factions are employing to defeat their adversaries. Having watched the battles rage recently for Aleppo, I was wondering if there are any maps out there or in the making that can create the kind of battles we're currently seeing in Aleppo. Fallujah the other maps like it are good good maps, but they're dated and they don't resemble war-torn Syria we see today. I know there's a lot of people who have played the desert themed maps to death and want something fresh, but an Aleppo kind of map would bring with it a lot of intense CQC gaming for people like myself who still like to play the Middle East maps . It would be nice to see a map that has lots of heavily damaged towering buildings with their fronts blown off that provided dark and dingy multiple platforms to launch attacks or snipe from, and buildings like we see in Syria with lots of those chiselled out holes to shoot from. I think it would be a great experience if players and tanks worked better together to root out snipers camped out from these heavily damaged towering buildings. I would like to see a labyrinth like network of streets strewn with rubble, twisted steel, debris and vehicle wrecks, but also with the heavily damaged buildings that have partially destroyed staircases and balconies that players would have to navigate to get to vantage points to attack from If a single street had a rows of these damaged buildings that were all accessible, I believe it would bring more team play too as a squad would have to literally ensure each building they passed was cleared of any potential threats, or it would keep players constantly checking their surroundings for enemies to peer out from the many vantage points overlooking them. In short, an Aleppo kind of map would IMO not only definitely bring an intense nail biting gaming experience to the table, but would also encourage a lot more team play as everyone would need assurance from each other when battling that kind of densely constructed environment. If there's nothing in the making, what map would you suggest to use in order to get as close to this experience as possible? Cheers, Infil

    I wish I had the patience and skill. I began to learn to script, but I took a break and haven't been back to it since. I'm not sure I'm cut out to code if I'm honest. I'm 46 so I'm wondering if I'm too old to grasp it.

    But doesn't the third person option kind of defeat the point of ultimately gaming with virtual reality in the future? I don't get why gamers are so desperate to get there hands of an Oculus Rift for an immersive gaming experience when they're content with playing arcade? It's bizarre. If you ask me, I think there's the element of having the upper hand that draws people to want to play with third person enabled. As for the crosshairs... you might as well play on a Playstation or xBox because it's just arcade to the extreme and total testicals for immersion and realism. Players on public servers seem to be more concerned about racking up kills and winning rather than enjoying an immersive reality game. I think I'm going to go down the private server route with my server, because public servers tend to attract too many lone wolfs. Let's be honest, if players on a public server aren't really using coms to work as a team, it then becomes a game of who can see and kill the enemy first rather than working together to strategically take down the enemy.
  6. I can't remember when I noticed this first happening, but it was a while ago. My problem, or annoyance, is my dedicated server is listed twice in the server browser but not favourited. I've searched around to try to find out what's causing this and how I can stop it but haven't found anything. My dedicated server is networked to my desktop via Ethernet and I use the remote desktop access it and configure things. Any suggestions to what's causing this? Cheers Infil

    Ports Closed on Dedicated Server?

    OK, I've found this is a router related issue. It seems there's some kind of issue with the router activating the settings I input via its GUI. I think the firmware is bugged. Tonight I tried the DMZ zone again and every port opened up. I deactivated the DMZ and the ports closed as expected. But when I reactivated the DMZ still the ports were closed? This is proof the router has an issue. A reboot maybe required every time I change the settings for the setting to embed in the memory. I wasted hours trying to resolve this issue only to find it's a firmware issue with the router. I've been using Merlin's WRT firmware to date, but I sense I may be reverting back to Asus' stock given the issues I've had. *** Update *** Removing the USB drive and doing a factory reset has now resolved this issue.

    I've got no issue with the fatigue system, but it's just a little wacky to have it enabled when everything else is arcade. Third-person is as good as cheating IMO. It gives players a huge advantage over the Ai and you can't get more arcadey than third-person. It makes flying and landing choppers childplay too. But I am admittedly a realism fan, so I won't have that much good to say about any setting that's arcade. With that said, ShackTacs hud is a nice compromise.

    Agreed. But I feel it's the map overall that's letting the Syrian theme down. If modders are able to recreate the damaged buildings, rubble and wrecks we see in Syrian cities like Aleppo today, I know it'll create something intensely immersive. It would force squads to move down streets in a tight formation whilst having to use coms. I'd also like to see things like the addition of decomposing bodies too with infesting surrounding insect flies with added sounds. Body parts and blood are of course are a reality of war too. Although I can imagine this will lead to another contentious debate. But a building that's been bombed will of course likely contain human remains. Scattered items like a child's toy, spent ammunition and family photographs are things that bring a lot of reality and immersion. The dynamic lighting tall buildings would create would be incredible as it'd created some nice dark shade to impair players' vision and keep them on their toes. Let's hope there's some WIP with something epic that resembles Syria's cities because I sincerely believe it'll bring something incredibly exciting to play.

    BMR Insurgency

    How do I change the JIP parameters when running BMR on a dedicated server? I can change them when hosting the mission on a client machine, but it won't let me edit the JIP parameters when hosted on my dedicated server. I've logged in as admin to no avail.
  11. I've downloaded a few addons, but not all are showing up. But what's throwing me that if I change the order they're typed into the parameter, the ones that previously weren't showing up would suddenly show up and the ones that were showing up would then disappear. I downloaded these addons via PWS. Could it be possible some are corrupt? Could a corrupt addon have this affect bizarre effect? These addons are substantial in size, so before I scrub them all and start afresh, it would be nice to know that it's their corruption that's the cause and nothing else. Cheers Infil.

    I've not tried lumping all the addons together yet. But turning off sig checks doesn't make any difference. I know ASR Ai is primarily server-sided, which is why I use the serverMod in the parameters. I might try the M$ Server 2016 and see if that fixes things.

    Well, I give up. I've not been able to get more than five addons working at any one time. There seems to be a conflict somewhere. I'm able to get CBA_A3, ASR_AI3, AGDG_JR, Kunduz and RHSAFRF working. If I add or remove an addons I get different combinations of addons showing up and disappearing. There seems to be some kind of conflict somewhere. I'm totally stumped :/
  15. I run a dedicated server, and I have for a while now without any issues with addons. But I can only assume that it's been since the last update not all the addons load. If I change the order of the addons in the shortcut addons that were visible are no longer visible, and the addons that weren't visible suddenly appear. I've reinstalled all the addons, the server installation as well as checking the client installation. Any ideas? Cheers Infil.

I noticed last night that the author (Jigsor) of the BMR Insurgency missions has written in a script that detects if Unit addons are detected and claims to replace them should you run the addons. Sadly I cannot test this as I'm having issues with running addons on my dedicated server. But still it's a great feature to have and well thought of. Of course, credit goes to all the other scripters out there who's contributed to the BMR Insurgency missions :)

    Some Addons Not Showing UP?

    I'm not using a launcher as I'm adding the addons for a dedicated server, so I'm simply adding creating a shortcut and adding the parameters from there. Infil. *Update* Last night I re-downloaded all the addons but still no joy. The only thing I can now think of is the mission that I'm trying to host is a BMR Insurgency one, and a script has been written in to replace the units with the ones contained in the addons should you run them. Tonight I'll try again and run the addons in the order it states in the mission's description. If that fails, I'll reinstall the server. I also noted that ASR Ai is both a client and server-sided addon. I read from the author that it runs better if ran on both client and server so I've never ran the -serverMod parameter. However, if there's little benefit to ASR Ai running on a client, I won't broadcast the fact it's installed on the server to reduce addon dependency.
  19. Let's for a moment forget about Arma's current engine and any suggestion that its use can be extended. If it's not multicore it's toast simple as! It's done its job and sooner or later BIS (if they haven't already) will have to concede that their RV engine needs to be replaced for any future release of Arma. But how long will this typically take to build to get an early release up and running? Will BIS be able to incorporate code for the existing engine? or will it have to be coded from the ground up? Could parts of DayZ's Enfusion engine be used for a Future Arma 4? Maybe BIS are relying on the sales, revenue generated and development of DayZ to develop Arma 4?

    Urban CQC I&A Type COOP Mission?

    Love Invade and Annex. I've been serving the both map versions - albeit with a few tweaks - and I love how dynamic and fluid it runs. A serious challenge too. If Insurgency is the way to go I'll definitely being playing it. Cheers Infil
  21. What's the best urban COOP mission out there ATM? I've looked on the workshop but it doesn't give much away. I'm looking or a dynamic mission that geared toward Invade and Annex in the respect it's pretty unpredictably dynamic and fluid. Are there any decent urban CQC missions out there? Up close and personal combat is what I'm looking for. Street to street fighting, building clearing with tasks to complete objectives. Cheers Infil
  22. I'm hosting a lightly edited version of I&A on a dedicated server, although when players join it takes them what seems forever to be able to join. Is there anyway I can reduce the time it takes for players to be able to join? Many just get frustrated and leave. There seems to be a long delay before the mission files even begins to download. I can't see this being a port issue as they're eventually able to join. Any ideas? Cheers Infil

    Sorted it. It was a stupid typo in the config. But hey, thanks for your help chap. If there's anything I've learnt it's that sometimes we can easily overlook the most simplest of errors. Just strange that nothing obvious came up in the RPT.
  24. I've not played for weeks. I was using 1.48, but when I realised there was an update, I updated both my dedicated server and my gaming rig. Now when I try to join my dedicated server it just hangs. The servers acknowledges I'm joining but the game just hangs and I'm not able to even enter the lobby. Any ideas? Cheers
  25. I played Arma3 last night after having not played for several weeks so I was let's just say a little rusty. But it soon all came back to me again. I played a session I hosted on my dedicated server with a friend that's currently the highest ranker on some popular server. Like many, my score doesn't mean anything to me, I just use it as a rough guide to how I'm doing compared to others. Naturally I kill as many Ai as possible, but I don't go out of my way to compromise other people's virtual lives by abandoning them and going off on a jolly to rack up kills. What made me laugh last night that even though I had consumed some 8.2% vintage cider and hadn't played for so long, 'Mr Blackfoot' who usually uses the skies to kill everything had to be kept being revived by me and I was holding off the enemy from storming the building that we had been bogged down in. From killing the enemy at short range with my side arm I was having to keep finding the time to revive my big point scoring mate :D So, the moral is, never assume the better player is the highest scorer :P
