The Skira map made for Arma 2 is smaller in scale and was never finished afaik. The actual OF:DR Island is 1:1 scale, I believe, so it's massive. Codemasters has not released any content of their games, so I doubt we will get it ingame anytime soon. Arma 2 also couldn't do terrain grids with the same resolution as OF:DR, which results in the A2 Skira looking very rough, in addition to being smaller scale. A3 may be able to cope with the resolution, but I'm not sure that it could do the same terrain size as Dragon Rising. (30 kilometers in length for the Island alone, not for the map edges.)

I doubt that overpressure is as bad as people make it seem, especially in damaged buildings. Videos from syria show tanks firing inside alleyways with infantry standing right next to them, people firing RPG-7s from inside closed rooms, firing recoilless rifles like the SPG-9 from inside closed rooms and taking fire closeby. The blast is possibly disorienting and gives a bad headache, but it does not kill you. The syrians are apparently relying on HEF when using their main guns, the primary effect of that is shrapnel and not blast pressure. And that shrapnel will go through walls, very likely. Cinderblock doesn't stop bullets, even 5.56 will go through no problem. So, if an HE goes off in the room next to you and all the windows and doors in the house are missing, the air literally just blows through and all that happens is that you are deaf. If the doors are closed you will have trouble when standing near to them, or inside the hit room. The lethality of many weapons appears to me strikingly hit and miss. Some things that seem kind of minor from an outside perspective make a person fall over dead immediately, and another thing that looks like hell broke loose makes everybody walk away without a scratch.

Community Upgrade Project - Weapon Pack
instagoat replied to .kju's topic in ARMA 3 - ADDONS & MODS: COMPLETE
Very much chuffed at this, magnificient work! The few bugs are barely noticeable, but some are kinda funny. The 10 rounder magazines for the barrett .50 rifle contain 41 shots, for example. And there are twenty thousand identical black british assault packs. <- .50 41 round mag example. Looking forward to seeing this develop. Once I get my new PC in summer I can finally get around to actually playing with all the content I've amassed. Great job, many, many thanks! -
Sexuality is not the same as gender. You can't tell a gay from a straight person, but you sure as heck can tell a biological male from a female. I mean, TkoH had full voice sets for females, including combat callouts. It even assigned females in combat roles (without assigning female heads, interestingly, so things were weird.). A simple solution like this would be step in the right direction.

Because it is economical nonsense to do anything about small time violators like this. There are too many, they're all over the world and the legal expenses to get them would be monumental compared to the returns. And those that are taken down will be quickly replaced by more scriptkiddies, which in the end does not just alleviate the situation but also loads BI down with tons of legal expenses. I am not just talking about paying the lawyer, but allocating internal time and resources to an unwinnable battle when there are potentially much bigger fish to fry. Further, the content being abused is not made by BI, so there's nothing they can go to court over anyway. As for the EULA violations, again, small fish by comparison.

Question is wether or not that model actually is from Shift. The few blurry screenshots don't allow a good comparison, to be honest, so this is not a solid case. In any case, if this is content sold by EA as part of their games, EA would be the entity to be addressed over this. As far as making profits, though, selling game content is not about donations any more. Any donation reward scheme really goes into grey territory, and that one there looks to be on the dark side of it. It's a bit frustrating to see this, especially when recalling that when the community was hatched during the early OFP days, everybody was making their own content with their own hands so to speak, instead of ripping from other games and then just retexturing everything. And even the mods that used the content that others provided only did so when they were allowed to, ie, the WH40K mod for Resistance (they used the Dawn of War models when they became freely available) and a handful of stalker style mods that used Stalker assets that were made freely available from the devs of that game. Nothing like this bollocks that seems to be going on with these, surprisingly huge, "mods".

Why America is NOT the greatest country in the world, any-more.
instagoat replied to walker's topic in OFFTOPIC
What worries me most about the US is the terrible public perception of science. More than 40 % of people do not think that evolution is real, it is the origin and single most powerful funding source for global creationists (with answersingenesis being the heavyweight, their founder ken ham recently debated bill nye). There are extreme and frankly destructive policies being implemented in schools, from "teaching the alternative" to complete abolition of sex education and the move towards radicalized homeschooling concepts. They nearly cancelled the james webb space telescope, and they catapulted the US out of high energy physics research by cancelling the large particle accelerator that was supposed to be -much- larger than the LHC here in the EU, thus much more capable. There are US politicians who are openly calling for "standing up to the experts" (as in, scientists) who they claim promote immoral and life-denying atheism, they proclaim that the US is a christian nation, by christians for christians, despite the open anti-christianity displayed by many of the founding fathers, thomas jefferson in particular. Where they can, they will quotemine and cherrypick things these people said for their advantage, while censoring and redacting everything that goes contrary to their cause. And the number above about how many americans take evolution for a real concept shows how successful they are. If the general public in the US is so illiterate about one of the most securely standing concepts in science, what about actual shaky things? The US has been one of the powerhouses in western science development, and as a European I do not like the Idea of loosing such an asset to mankind to morons. We are in real trouble here, I believe... nevermind the economy, that's not a problem of the US alone, that is a problem of global capitalism and cannot be solved by one nation alone. -

RHS Escalation (AFRF and USAF)
instagoat replied to soul_assassin's topic in ARMA 3 - ADDONS & MODS: COMPLETE
I've done some more tests and found that the shoulder warping of the IOTV only gets really pronounced with weapons that stretch the arms or that have reload animations that work outside the workspace around the gun, for example those on the HLC rifles. However, it is present on all units but not noticeable unless it catches your eye. Unfortunately, I get caught up in details all the time, so I was just unlucky. Another thing is that the US uniforms have a slight shine to them, which is especially noticeable around the shoulders. The lighting in the VR scenario also prounounces this slightly. I have the feeling that you were pressed for time in the end with these Units, but considering RHS previous shows, I should not really complain. The general look and feel of this addon is triple A already. The tanks in particular with their FCS's are delicious to the max. I am looking forward to seeing this develop further, it already is a landmark as far as A3 addons are concerned in my book. Thanks again for this release!- 16573 replies

True that, I apologize. I didn't want to suggest poor work or come off as entitled, so if I did that I want to correct that. I am using the most recent version of the beta branch, and I am running joint rails, CBA, StalkerGBs Infantry and a handful of small equipment mods as well as the HLC weapons packs and Trixies UK weapons. I will go and disable everything to see if the error persists and report back, it might really be something on my end.- 16573 replies

If anyone is curious, I've found what gloves NATO uses
instagoat replied to AdamWayne's topic in ARMA 3 - GENERAL
They have a different glove in OD. I found this glove ages ago on some other site and it had really poor reviews. I've recently purchased a pair of mechanix mpact gloves for work and they are really nice. They are kind of similar to the opfor gloves, except much less space age. Are the opfor TCCU gloves based on any real world model too? -
RHS Escalation (AFRF and USAF)
instagoat replied to soul_assassin's topic in ARMA 3 - ADDONS & MODS: COMPLETE
Fantastic work all around, thanks guys! The only issue I find is some visual glitches with the infantry, the vests in particular. They're tailored to fit their dedicated units only, making it difficult to, for example, kit out civilians with the russian vests to make insurgents or rebels with captured or surplus equipment without a lot of ugly clipping. The IOTV and the US Uniform also suffer from some warping issues. I love the tank FCSs and the infantry weapons and attachments along with that, very beautiful. Will the uniforms + kit be adjusted in the future to possibly fit better with the stock units (Civvies, AAF, FIA and Blufor in particular, not CSAT)? I have uploaded some pictures here: http://imgur.com/ebX6S7r,wLj5YBo,kGQmGLd,LjzaG0c,4Dmzewp (1: Shoulders warping on the IOTV, 2: example of Vest clipping, 3: same with different example Unit. Only default Unit that does not clip is Blufor T-Shirt guy I think. 4: Transparent inside of russian vest. 5: Model glitches and warping on IOTV) Congrats on the quick release, and many thanks for these superb units!- 16573 replies

The taru bench pod can be boarded and then carried as a sling load. Really cool way to extract and inject people into tight compounds and low tree canopies. However, I wonder what the purpose of these pods in general is, if they can't be affixed to the taru properly and instead only sling loaded. Aside from that, really cool new toys here!

The model has a few problems. The magazine is too thin, the bolt release is missing and apparently there is supposed to be a rail over the ejection port that is not being displayed when optics are mounted. No big problem, I don't use the marksman and sniper rifles anyway since I think snipers in games are honorless grass eating no skill left-click autowin boons. 8I

Would you donate to a bounty to expedite fixing some major in-game issues via a Patch
instagoat replied to stang725's topic in ARMA 3 - GENERAL
Economically doubtful. You can't fix issues by simply dropping cash on them. And 330 bucks is a drop in a bathtub. Consider that BI raised something like 3 million in external investments PLUS sales from Arma 2 related to DayZ, and still did not end up with Arma 3 where they (and we, I supposed) expected everything to end up. Cut content, etc... I would be interested to have somebody from some high level academic institution working with top notch AI to have a look at BI's system and tell what we've got, really, over somebody just throwing money at BI and hoping that it'll somehow result in improved content. Another problem is the performance, which is okay when the map is empty, and deteriorates once units are on the map. Etc, etc. But my priority would be an improved damage system for vehicles (internal bullet deflection and fragmentation, complex component and crew damage, fire, ammo vs fuel burning up, dry vs wet ammo stowage, blowout panels, ERA, fire suppression, blast damage handling... basically, ditching the hitpoint system completely. -
One good thing is to learn what kind of distances the AI and/or players tend to spot you at. With AI, your camo doesn't matter as much, but when being up against players selecting your background can be crucial. For example, the Nato uniform is very pale, and will stand out against dark backgrounds. The Opfor dark hexacam is the best camo I found, especially in dusk situations and under NV. You can completely disappear into the terrain with it. What is also important is learning to move under observation. For example, in the campaign I did a patrol mission with the truck, and made the mistake of driving into a ditch on a hillside I thought was shielded from enemy observation by the trees. Next thing I know is my truck brewing up because enemies had spotted me way earlier and were already in the woods I intended to use to sneak up on them. If I had just left the truck where it was and instead went on foot, crawling all the way, it would have taken much longer but I also would not have been spotted. Death by lack of patience. See and don't be seen. Practice patience.

Why not hang a pod with a 75 mm cannon and 6.5 gatling underneath the chopper? Add unguided rockets from the Opfor Jet to the stub wings and off you go. Badass gunship. http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-qdLP02Xs4Ic/UxbVBMyP50I/AAAAAAAAAVU/BZ4M8Jq6bEk/s1600/v-22+remote+guardian.jpg I am almost tempted to make a quick sketch. Better than that system there, but basically the same Idea. Place the gunner either inside the pod or behind the Pilots. Basically, a helicopter AC-130.

Only problem I immediately see is the extremely hard-limited area you can pan around in. Some positions in vehicles also are awkward, with the shooter sitting with feet hovering off the ground, sunk in a bench, torso twisted badly, etc... Isn't it possible to do some inverse kinematics to automatically raise the soldier when aiming down over a ledge (Offroad, for example.) or make him twist his hips when panning to the extreme of left and right?
-
Yeah, which is why I was hopeful for some sort of extra extra confirmation. I Guess I'll just cross all fingers and hope for the best.
-
So, when will the shooting from vehicles feature arrive? I am most antsy for that one.
-
That's bad. No other game does this. It also feels like changing volumne does not affect this. Video is here: It's especially prominent when inside. Also, inside the vehicle, the gun sound should not reverberate and echo, but that's a different thing. Echo and gun noise should best be detached from each other, since the echo is really to be treated differently. It passes through so much atmospheric filtering, compared to the initial sound. But what I'd like to see fixed first is this crackling and overboosting. It's very annoying. EDIT: Problem persists when volumne ingame is lowered to 50 %.
-
The new tank gun sound is good, but the sound artifacts are still appauling. I get bad electric crackling when firing machineguns, tank guns, and when explosions occur closeby. It's the same effect you get when you overload a speaker on your hifi. Overboosting and sound aliasing artifacts, apparently. I am currently uploading a video to demonstrate the problem.

http://arstechnica.com/gaming/2014/08/report-adult-women-gamers-now-double-the-number-of-under-18-boys/ Average age of a gamer is 31 years. I think this only takes into account numbers in the US, but I would suspect that numbers in Europe in general are similar, at least for the central european countries. The average age here in the EU should be around 30 too.

When playing online games, I find that gamers are indeed rather often very hateful, aggressive, angry people. Sexism and Racism are rampant too, oftentimes: Former can be found galore in the threads on female characters in this game here and on the tracker. Talking that away is problematic. Disregarding an obvious problem with gamer culture is bad, especially so because gamers often act like entitled brats who feel they are owed by the game producers. It has been bad for this game, but in some others Devs have received personal death threats in the physical mail over things done to their games. The fact that neither our community nor BI have acknowledged the viability of female characters nor the existence of female gamers in the shape of even a single face and voice in Arma 3 is not good. However, that being said, generally games suffer from a bad reputation in the main media because of the popularity of so many games that are essentially only about shooting people. This is why most games who get media coverage in germany, for example, are covered by the blanket designation of "killer games". Continuous success by such franchises like Battlefield, COD or even Arma does not help to alleviate that perception. The lack of press about all the other games (which, contrary to COD, often -are- actual games instead of glorified railshooters) that are out there, many of them at least not focused on violence and many completely non-violent, is definitively problematic too. Sometimes I feel like games are still a completely misunderstood medium, with a lot of stigma attached to it. The kind of vitriol directed towards gamers is direct evidence of that. But in general, as far as the media is concerned, this is a self-made problem in the sense that the people who are gaming journalists have often been part of the first or second wave of gamers and aren't trained journalists. Instead, they're people with an opinion who happen to write for gaming news outlets. But this decay of information and fact gathering and presenting can be seen not only in games journalism, but elsewhere too. And as long as one is consuming the articles of the websites that are part of causing this upheaval, nothing will change. Conversely, if gamers and game publishers (ie, those people with the money. Individual companies are often too starved for funds to make industry-scaping projects and decisions.) do not step up and begin looking at Games as art and culture beyond mere entertainment, separate and different from any other medium, nothing will be presentable to the public eye that can re-shape the prevailing opinion. A recent study found that today, female gamers apparently are in the slight majority over male gamers (adults both.), but the question of misogyny isn't in how many people are actual gamers, but how they are treated for their plumbing. Looking at our community, just look at some of the comments in the thread about female characters on the tracker and you will know that there are problems. General consent seems to be in the right direction, but again, ignoring the problems does not help improve our image. My two convoluted cents.
