Do something with nifty videos. Do some world building, think movie trailers. I don´t want to learn about the dry facts of how many vehicles, this and that type of weapon, I want to get involved in the world and get a feel for the story. A3 may just be the first game of the arma series with an exciting story to it. Get creative, prove that you´re artists first, military realism researcher scientists second. That´s at least my opinion :I

The trouble with getting people into Arma
instagoat replied to instagoat's topic in ARMA 3 - GENERAL
This kind of BS elitism is one of the things that can make a community rot. You can either have a living game with a broad player base, which is easily moddable for the hardcore crowd to get their fix, or you can a super-hard sim with a tiny player base, which frustrates the hell out of every newcomer and which stalls new influx into the existing community structures. From CWR to Arma to Arma 2, as far as I could see, the amount of community work in mods and missions gradually decreased, because the times changed, and the game stayed the old, rugged, hyper-complex, difficult to get into system it has always been since the OFP days. If people can´t have fun from day one, they will switch over to games which satisfy them more easily. Fun can also be in learning a game. That is why we need better tutorials: learning the complexity of the game needs to be fun in itself. Base complexity doesn´t matter, and it´s not gonna be changed anyway. The core game will not be dumbed down, it will be improved. That at least is the hope that I have, and if BI isn´t up to the game, if I won´t be satisfied, I will be out of it too. Because I for one am, after ten years, fed up with the same old OFP. Edit: Okay maybe I´m not entirely, but you know what I mean. :I I just would like to see A3 boost the community from several dozen to several hundred of modders again or something. -
From: B. Wilson Posted in: General Global Militaries Picked this up from a friend, who also posted the recent pictures from europe and this sahrani place. By now, the cat´s pretty much out of the bag: I´ve just watched TV, which is now saying that we´re pretty much at war with the SCO. Obviously the diplomatic channels are running red hot right now, and there´s to hope that something will come out of it. Even as someone who´s seen a lot of things in his time, I am pretty intimidated by this. My friend says he has live-video feeds from Units fighting in south-eastern europe, which show british, german and american troops fighting over a village. He also has two pictures taken by handycam, which I am going to post here, and leave them to be discussed while I and my friend review the rest of the footy and prepare it for you. I am afraid these channels aren´t safe, and we´re probably gonna be cut off real soon, so download everything you can and spread it around so we can put an end to the government disinfo campaign that´s obviously been run until now. The truth needs to get out, and people need to get out into the street before this madness gets out of hand. Two attachments WARNING EXPLICIT: First picture seems to show an US Army casualty and a burning, russian made jeep, and what is presumeably an OPFOR soldier. With the pictures from czechoslovakia, from the Iwo Jima incident and northern Ukraine, this is the seventh picture of supposed western casualties that is going around. I also have a report on my desk that filtered out from the frontlines, which seems to indicate heavy contact with large enemy forces. It´s not big, it´s not much, and not very relevant so I´m not going to post it here. The soldier on the second picture I´ve identified as a PFC Joshua Brunn, of Dallas, TX, who is part of an airborne unit that is supposedly deployed to Iraq, but of whom cannot be found a trace there. From what I can tell, this Unit is actually deployed in Europe right now. All military post traffic is heavily screened right now, and the news coming in from the troops are very potholed and mushy. As far as PFC Brunn is concerned, you can see that his face is pretty badly burned. No official news from his unit or his family about this, but I think it´s safe to say that this is a combat injury. I will keep you posted if I learn more about the pictures, and when I get more of them online. End of Post.

Non reflecting reflector sight sights in ARMA
instagoat replied to Rocklobster's topic in ARMA 3 - GENERAL
This has been an issue of critique since the times of armed assault. Apparently it´s non-fixeable, so the static "painted" reticules will remain in the game. They are visible in all videos of arma 3 so far. My suggestion would have been to "paint" the reticule as part of the GUI (ie, not a texture at all, but as a cursor) which only appears when looking down the sights. That way colour, size and shape could be selected and altered via config, and reticules would be much more easier to standardize to realistic values and looks. I´ve suggested this in multiple places so far, but it wasn´t picked up on, so I guess it´s another avenue the devs have already tried and tested, and found to be non-workeable for some reason. That, or I wasn´t careful enough in highlighting the idea. Would be great to get parallax-free sights ingame, though. That, and 3D magnifying optics. -
This is probably a pretty grand thing, but I was wondering if there were people actually into this. I enjoy high command, in fact it´s one of my favourite things about this sim. However, apart from the controls not being good enough, another problem is the complete lack of a high command AI outside of warfare. And even the warfare AI can´t (apparently) do anything but send its Units out to piecemeal try and capture points. One thing I am hoping for is working HC AI, Units communicating between each other, and maneuvering tactically against each other using their respective countries doctrine. Especially because this is a future setting, involving a highly digitized, synchronised battlefield, concepts like Landwarrior become important. I´d be feeling the game would miss something, if this weren´t realized. I compiled an "interesting questions about the game" thread for take on helos, might do the same later for this game after E3, assembling questions from the community as they appear. Anyway, your thoughts on this are very welcome. Especially if you´re a dev, hint hint wink wink nudge nudge... Cheerio! Insta

Would be wonderful if the stuff once it´s released would be collected somewhere on here, as I am on very restricted internet right now (due to being hospitalizifizied), so that one can check back on it at a later date. Anyway, that is good news, even though I´m not very pumped about more techy background info. I want to be immersed in the setting, feel with the characters and loose myself in the world. Not consult graphs regarding specifics of the HDR engine or new sub-contextual integrative tools for multi-threaded storytelling in a post-cryptic market environment. And no corporate buzzwords, please. 8V Cheerio Insta

Arma 3: Confirmed features | info & discussion
instagoat replied to Maio's topic in ARMA 3 - GENERAL
They manage today because they don´t have the tech yet. Once they´ve had it once, they´ll want to continue to use it (for example, Land Warrior as it was tested in the field by the US Army). My half cent. -
I´ve gotta say, as a dedicated fan, the lack of news and hype is somewhat uninspiring. I´ve had tons of juicy Ideas myself, but that´s not the same as getting juicy propaganda work put out by the devs themselves. What I´m talking about is really down and dirty advertisement work, though, not dry stuff like we´ve been getting so far. Yes, we know the engine looks nice. Yes, we know you have terrain normal mapping. The Island is probably pretty detailed too... but what I (as a gamer interested in, you know, the game) want to see is stuff about the GAME, not the TECHNOLOGY. Just thought I´d put this out here to be discussed. Carry on

PMC is (sadly) only good for the Kasatka and the Campaign, the rest is pretty mediocre content. (Thx to Binkowski for that one-liner). BAF holds more stuff to enjoy. Best stock Units ever made for an Arma game, good Campaign and a bunch of pretty cool SP missions. Don´t know about the MP content, I don´t do MP. my two cents.

Since OFP, arma has fallen far short of having an adequate soundtrack: and even OFP´s was lacking in many respects. There are no proper ambiences (the tracks who are called that are NOT proper ambient tracks. For that, listen to Stalker´s "Dead Cities" for example.) There are no character pieces. All there is are random noise tracks. I hope A3 will take a big step forward in that regard. Otherwise, I´ll do as I do now with A2, and turn the music off (and by doing that, turning off a big slice of what should make the atmosphere of the game.)

I would like to see something like this implemented. For example, I was playing a campaign recently where half my squad was blown to pieces by a VBIED. Other than loosing a lot of firepower, this had zero effect on my squad. Enemy squads also only seem to have two modes: fully combat effective or on the run, but nothing inbetween. The player morale system of VBS is nice, for example, with the increased gun sway and tunnel vision when the squad starts to take fire or casualties, but something similar needs to be implemented for the AI. It could be really simple too! For example: Squad takes casualties, this causes the gun sway in individual AI to go up from the default, not settling again until the squad as not been in contact for a significant amount of time. Suppression should also have a more lasting effect than it has in Arma 2. Most people get really impressed when a hail of 7.62 bullets is tearing up the earth around them! Lastly, morale influence based on nearby friendly/enemy units. For example, if you have armour support, and suddenly the armour gets blown up, all friendly units with a line of sight should experience a morale drop and associated penalties. The same should go for Unit leaders: if you snipe the squad leader, the squad should experience a significant morale drop based on their skill and training. This would make combat, especially in high command, even more realistic than it is now. What are your thoughts on this, community?

Another video has popped up, this time from a place called Sahrani. Somebody in the military blogged about it in the first decade of the 21st century. Back then it was a flashpoint, but the details on what actually happened there are fuzzy. The only known reporters on there were from the spanish speaking world, mostly south american, and one international news channel, ANN, actually lost a reporter in the combat there. I cannot post the video here because my damn converter keeps screwing it up. It has been passed around a lot already, and I can only get my hands on a variant with a dubious chinese file format. This suggests that this may be footage captured by SCO forces, leaked from their military circles back on their homefront. Lisa has managed to get a screenshot of the video, though, and I´ll post her pic here for your viewing pleasure (as pleasant as what seems to be a fully blown war can be anyway.) Lisa writes that the footage seems to be of a helmet cam of a local soldier. Everybody speaks spanish, and everybody looks pretty high speed, suggesting these are special forces of some sort. The date and name of the operator have been blacked out: Because of this I´m getting a feeling that this may be an intentional leak. While the net is still open, stuff like this going around can nibble away at our own populaces morale, especially with as little info from the front (even if the pentagon still refuses to call it that way) getting to official media channels as is now. As you all likely know, the government has been getting pretty tense lately. China, Russia, and some other SCO nations have withdrawn their ambassadors from a few NATO head-countries, namely germany, great britain, france and the US. Meanwhile, reliable sources dated thursday last week indicate that the fleet yards at Murmansk and Pacific Fleet headquarters at Vladivostok, as well as the big submarine base at Vilyuchinsk, Kamchatka are pretty much deserted. Ditto for the big Chinese navy bases along their coast. Something -large- is going down, and apart from what´s left of the independent media, nobody seems to notice. It might interest you that bases such as Vilyuchinsk house the major components of SCO´s pacific strategic nuclear offensive firepower. Most of that is housed in brand new Borei and Borei II class subs, the old leftover Akulas and also leftover refurbished Deltas. I am pretty sure our navy is keeping tabs on those, but I for one get nervous knowing that these things are prowling around out there while the world is at the brink of global conflict. As for the video, I will try and get it to work. I´ll keep you updated.

This is complete overkill. Arma isn´t a manual of arms trainer, it´s a battlefield simulator. Be happy that we already get gun specific reloading animations. Anything more complicated than that should be done by the modding community, for those who want to overload an already crammed interface with more dubiously useful commands. My two cents on this, for what they´re worth.

New people coming in and helping to shape the community are always welcome. I hope you find people who can put in the time and effort to do what you want to achieve. With a bit of luck, Arma 3 will draw enough attention to seriously revive the modding and gaming community, back up to OFP era levels. That´d be great. Keep it up!

How about (as Iranian 2nd line rifle or something) the actual Iranian assault rifle Khaybar K-2002? http://world.guns.ru/assault/iran/khaybar-kh2002-e.html That would be rad. Maybe a tacticalized version with rails and everything too. -
Hmm, duly noted. It makes sense. I have understood it differently, as in the common resource zone being some type of alliance. The name´s struck me as pretty weird too. I will change the posts and turn the CRZ into the SCO. That should be more realistic.
-
The CRZ is the Common Resource Zone, which is appears to be the OPFOR alliance. It is mentioned in a handful of places in the canon on the website, as well as the threads that popped up when Arma 3 was announced. Welcome User. Please Enter password below to proceed. :******* Logout successful.

Thanks. I´m a mix of visual and story person. I already have something written up, but it´s already six pages long and growing, so I´ll not post it here. Instead, I´ll do more of these pictures and add little story snippets with them. I love world building

weapon replacement script
instagoat replied to Militant1006's topic in ARMA 2 & OA : MISSIONS - Editing & Scripting
I was trying to get these to work, however, not even one of the example missions worked. I need to replace weapons for about 200 Units on this map, and doing it all via init line is kind of tedious. I am pretty bad at scripting, can anybody help me out here? I have tried all the script versions and the example missions posted in this thread, to no avail. :< Any kind of help is really appreciated, thanks in advance! Cheerio Insta Edit: I have to add that I run the mission with ACE2 to make use of all the good features it has, maybe there´s a conflict there? If yes, is there a workaround to make something like this work with ACE? Edit of the Edit: I have got Twirly´s version working now, except (as stated by him) it only changes the weapon of any unit that has the thing in its init line. Is there any way to execute this globally for all Units of a faction of a given type, with the script there? -
Suggestion: If military actions are involved, on one of the Islands that exist (Duala, Podagorsk, stock islands, etc.), why not POST A CUSTOM MISSION with the story? :D That way, we can intertwine the game and the story. In a way, all existing campaigns, if the authors so wish, could already be armaverse fiction. I am currently building a big CQB battle around the City of Chernogorsk, with a cut off detachment of Marines and Airborne Infantry making a last stand against a russian Rank-B Battalion. My computer can barely handle it, but it´s great fun! The map will be ACE2 only, though, sorry :( I will post the story and a link to the mission once both are done.

A bit far out, but... Dynamic and progressive deterioration of Uniforms and Equipment. Accumulation of dirt, dust and mud, depending on weather and ground conditions. Wet Uniforms, depending on severity of rain or passing trough water obstacles. Uniforms have always looked too tidy and clean in Arma. A picture of inspiration here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/dvids/5635086616/in/pool-98821669@N00/lightbox/
