    Arma3 Alpha Testing Checklist

I´ll probably do my Hesco-enclosed arena AI testing again to check how good they work. I will get the game as soon as the alpha is released, but I won´t have my PC ready until a week after that, but yes. Original video of what I am talking about here, btw:

Arma 3 is not going far enough with Technology

Many of these technologies will be specialty application in 2035, not first line issue. Some technology is actually being discussed in politics today already, such as at home 3D printers aiding in developing and producing home made weapons. And weapons will usually be used until they wear out or are rendered obsolete. In a battlespace contested by 4th and 5th generation stealth aircraft, B-52s will be eaten for breakfast. Even Iran is making forays into stealth fighter tech now (even though their Fighter is a rather poor mockup, it still exhibits a basic grasp of stealth shaping.), both russia and china have stealth aircraft flying, and India will be receiving PAK-FAIs as soon as possible. The only field where Nato has a true advantage in the midterm is C&C as well as Combat Intelligence and Digital Networking technologies for ground forces. Everywhere else, we are increasingly being outdone as far as technology goes. I am still gathering data, by the way, but the whole thing turns out to be a little more daunting than expected. Cheers, Insta

    Development Blog & Reveals

The butthurt over this is unbelievable. Steam exclusive doesn´t mean you can only buy it on steam. It means that you will need Steam to install the game. It will be available in stores, on disc, from sprocket (providing a steam instead of sprocket key. At least I would expect this.), and you weren´t allowed to share the game previously before if you bought it on disc. Read the sales agreements, with the disc you are only granted a license to your install, you may not share or publically display the game. Technically, reselling the game or sharing it is against the contract of purchase. So, technically, nothing changes.

You need an internet connection to install the game, without connection, no code check, no code check results in no install and thus no game. That´s the problem, basically. After you´ve installed you can play offline, obviously. Edit: Besides, what´s with everybody whining about communities dying and the game being ruined. This reminds me of the stereotypical old men, hanging over their fences and waving their walking sticks as they complain about the youth and how everything was better when they were young and how everything today is ruined. Steam is not only an excellent basic platform for development, but it also offers -massive- advantages as far as Advertising goes, and one central marketplace along with shop sales. Steam has not ruined gaming, in fact Steam is one of the reasons why -proper- games still exist. Not speaking of Blockbusters, I´m speaking of truly creative and challenging content from the Indie sectors of the market. Just because all you´re paying attention to is what the big three are doing doesn´t mean gaming is ruined. There are tons of cool games out there, but you have to open up to find them. Steam is one of the places where they can be found. The only problem I have with it is what I stated above. Aside from that, this is not a decision worthy of moping about.

The only problem I see is that this will need a permanent internet connection, ruling out anybody who doesn´t have that (that may include me from april on :( ) Otherwise, the annoyance is not comprehensible to me. Arma 3 seems to turn out as a pretty troubled development, and at the end I´d love to see a book or something published on that, looking behind the scenes. Also, the new screenshots are fantastic. KH2002 all the way bebe (Not being critical right now because A: Fanboy and B: I don´t expect this to be all the news and will wait until everything´s published to draw conclusions.)

    Meteor impact in Russia

Maybe this´ll wake politicians up to the fact that space investments are necessary, and that if we want to avert fully blown extinction events we need an orbital guard force. The common enemy is nature, and without a space force capable of meeting such threats, another dinosaur-killing-type of event is just a matter of time. Space is not a happy flashy sparkling blanket draped over the sky at night. It´s actually part of our lives, and if people and politics continue to keep ignoring that we will run into problems. Why was this object not spotted in advance? Why was there no news prior to its impact? Because apart from the NEOC, there are no organized efforts to spot and contain these objects. Humans. Shit always needs to happen before something is done about it.

ARMA 3 - still unrealistic optics

The reason most games don´t have RTT even if the engine allows for it is that it´s a performance hog. Of the competition in 2008, no game used it either, but instead "cheated" in a similar fashion to the design mastery M4 ACOG, for example, or didn´t use magnification at all for all optics and instead modified the weapon behaviour. However, I think RTT would look damn good in the game. However, I think performance should trump looks, in this case, because Arma is demanding enough as it is without visual gimmicks.

They´re Namer IFVs, not Achzarits. The choice is mostly for the sake of Rule of Cool. Plus, Israeli equipment is about as mediterranean as it gets.

    Positive Feedback Thread

Self entitled much? Nevermind the problems that occured last year, and the dedication of the team to not make the same mistakes as happened with Arma 2. I bet if they´d released the game middle of last year you would´ve been here complaining about how buggy it is and omg I´m never buying anything from you again 0/10. There´s more important things in life than games. I am content with waiting, even though it´s difficult to remain excited about the game while no news are coming around. I want the game to be good, and I trust BI to make the right decisions. How long it´ll take is really their thing, and a delay of one year isn´t really critical. Other games were released with 7+ years of delay and were good and well received at release (Stalker, for example.). And if it really upsets you so much, vote with your wallet and attention, instead of trying to get responses in such a silly way on the forums.

    ARMA 3 OPFOR Discussion Thread

Opfor is bestfor. The Uniforms represent a different philosophy from the western equipment, and they actually are, as far as technology is concerned, feasible in the timeframe. They have thermo-regulating undersuits for thermal camouflaging (that´s why they have the heatsink on the back.). The fully enclosed helmet represents the Idea of a standardized military force, where all equipment is mass produced without much freedom of modification to lower the training and cost requirements. Then you have different layers of gear over the top, apart from the rigs shown there we´ve also seen screenshots where Iranian soldiers wear OTV style bodyarmour with PALS webbing. Over the top of the undersuit you have loose fatigues that close off at the elbows and have pads over the top, again to simplify them and reduce cost. The lack of camo patterning all over like in some russian camo smocks is also to reduce cost, I presume, and to improve abrasion resistance in the fabric by using heavy materials in heavy wear areas. Because you have a thermally regulating undersuit, you do not need different Battle Uniforms for different weather conditions, all you need is for the soldier to adjust his thermosuit to keep him as cool or as warm as he needs to be. The only thing you will need is different types of camouflage. http://www.armaholic.com/datas/users/arma3_facebook_9_4.jpg <- Urban style Camo. I think special forces will not be very different by base equipment, they´ll also have the thermosuits and maybe enhanced helmets with audio-enhancing sensors, sort of like the more expensive hearing protection sets you can get nowadays. They´ll have more advanced mission specific equipment, lighter bodyarmour, and possibly better weaponry, but visually will likely not be easily distinguished, but I´ll let myself be surprised if BI decides otherwise. Then you have the Vehicles, which are sort of geared towards a COIN type of operation (with the M-ATVs and stuff, rather than the more cold war styled vehicles Blufor seems to have, Fenneks, Merkavas, etc.), which is what the Iranians seem to be doing at the time Arma 3 starts. :I So. Opfor is Bestfor, clearly.

    Military Humor

http://www.duffelblog.com/ You figure it out :/
  15. The reason I put these drones in my "Arma 3 tech" thread is that Arma 3 is taking place in 2035. Even then, drones will not replace infantrymen. And, in a fully blown war, costs will drop rapidly, simply because everything will be streamlined to bare necessities (or in the case of germany, made less reliable while remaining complex and difficult to maintain. Case in point, first employment of Tiger and Panther.). Drones are useful for surveillance, area and pinpoint, patrol, area denial, ground support, supply and SAR purposes. Drones cannot take ground, they cannot hold ground and they cannot defend ground. For those reasons alone, they will not replace soldiers on the ground who can intelligently and rapidly make the call. If you want to see what an army of drones would look like, put down a bunch of tanks in Arma and let them try to navigate a town. That´s about what you´ll get. And even in the long term, when these systems will be perfected, the points I stated above will not have been changed one bit. Drones are a support weapon of the infantry, like every other arm of the military, in the grand picture. They will be specialty weapons like tanks, fighterbombers and warships. There´s a reason why the Infantry is called the Crown of all battlefield arms.
  16. Drones cannot "make the call" as good as a human can. There are too many factors involved, at least in an asymmetric war. How does a drone tell between an unmarked civilian and a hostile person? The real power of drones is battlefield observation and interdiction (human controlled), as well as direct support for ground elements. The only place where people will likely be replaced is in fighter jets, because there, frankly, humans are simply a nuisance (being too soft and squishy for the job). Infantry will never go away. Drones cannot hold ground, or dynamically react the way an infantry element can. They are support systems and force multipliers.

    ACE for OA 1.13

Nope, these were always salvaged from somewhere. I never thought to try the default equipped AT soldiers, should there be a difference? Tested it, Units equipped with them at start of mission can use at least the Javelin. Pity, I usually don´t play missions where I have heavy AT right from the start :/

    ACE for OA 1.13

I´ve searched the thread but couldn´t find anything, so here goes... How do I make my AI teammates use the Javelin or the Dragon? Telling them to target an enemy vehicles doesn´t make them draw the launcher, so I´m always forced to take the launchers off them and use them myself. I´ve also not seen guided missiles fired by AI commanded teams very often, but I am unsure wether or not they are able to use Javelin and Dragon (Possibly the Metis and other guided launchers don´t work either, haven´t done a comprehensive test). Any solution to this, outside from not using ACE?
  20. Test shots of the US4CES. The colours are adjusted from the most recent photographs of the pattern that´s being trialled. Green is transitional, the rest is OCIE. The basic pattern is unaltered from the ones Alex Vestin put up here, all I did was alter the colours.
  21. I believe the in flight videos are faked with a scale model, and the engine noise is just copied over from a flight recording of an F-5 or F-4. The full scale plane is most likely a mockup.
  22. I think it is wrong to dismiss the performance of this aircraft merely on the looks of what is obviously a first prototype. Iran has to literally smuggle in any high tech industrial equipment, so the fact that they managed to put this together at all is quite astounding. By the looks of it, it´s also a more radical and ingenious design than the two chinese Jets. There are some places out there that have read the books and could do stealth shaping calculations on this, but just from the mere outside look of it, this looks very well to be competetive with the F-35. But it is small. Small airframes are not good, if you want to have overhead room for future development. The fact that they don´t show any taxi, takeoff and landing footage, as well as air to air closeups like the Russians did with their pak-fa and the chinese with their two jets is suspicious, however. There seem to be some clever design tricks in this little jet, and that they could get it this far should be applauded, but realistically, I doubt that they will be able to mass produce this to any competetive standard if even the materials Industries of China and Russia are doubted by some analysts to be able to produce stealthy surface materials for their own new low observabillity designs.

A few questions about the game.

You can still wear enemy Uniforms, but they won´t work as disguise simply because of AI problems. If swimming, you need to wear scuba gear if you want to stay under water for any amount of time, or you will drown. All buildings where this makes sense will be enterable. BI devs have stated something like 90% of all structures. And also, all of this has been mentioned in the "Confirmed features" thread.

Arma 3 is not going far enough with Technology

Well, the Merkavas have Trophy physically modelled, and active protection has been mentioned among the implemented features, and has been mentioned on the fluff on the website from the start. Plus the stuff maionaze mentioned. I am pretty sure that Arma 3 will offer tons of new possibillities, I just hope the implementations are solid and sound, and not ad-hoc and tacked on like some other features were in the past.
  25. Nope. If they had no waypoint, they would sit in the open until everybody was shot. They didn´t use cover, they sent Units singly to attack the enemy piecemeal, they didn´t flank unless given specific waypoints by the player (running randomly from left to right doesn´t count as flanking.). They didn´t suppress the enemy, and couldn´t be suppressed, and they all were snipers. (Hence the drive when JAM came out to add High Dispersion magazines to everything so you actually had firefights instead of sniper duels that lasted all of 10 seconds.) People should take off their pink coloured glasses with regards to OFP. It was not as godly as people make it out to be. The AI in Arma 2 would eat the OFP AI alive, if they were to be pitched against each other.
