    Warfare BE

Hi Benny, Thanks for adding HC to warfare, this could add some really interesting possibilities! Is there any reason Ai teams are not put on HC? They seem the ideal solution to keep low pop servers interesting. Also what about all the other Ai things we would always want but never enable due to server fps, e.g. base patrols, wandering patrols etc? P.s tried to setup xr this am with hc but no hc filling civilian slot? How do u get hc to show?

    Broken Filters

I nearly always have no servers showing until I hit refresh twice. Hitting it only once nearly always shows no servers for me using latest betas.
  5. I find the whole thing a little confusing. Im not a server admin but im v keen to understand whats being done & where the benefit comes from. So a second copy of arma 2 is installed on server pc. Server is launched and then this invisible client is launched from second copy of arma, is that right? Invisible client then joins game that is hosted on the same pc and all ai work in multiplayer mission that was normally performed on the server is now performed by this invisible client, which is actually just the same pc, connecting to itself? How then does a speed increase occur when dealing with AI if its still the same pc processing the AI? Thanks, in advance.

    Automatic Mod Downloading

Is there any reason why u guys seem to be in favour of a launcher? I know launchers for arma 2 have bn good but thats because they have to be, there was no alternative apart from command line launching. With arma 3 there is a chance to sit down & do this right, from scratch. Why not have a built in server browser that does it all? Or for SP a check before mission start that checks/downloads any missing mods. Yes some mods need an engine restart but that really doesnt take long, especially with an ssd. I just think a good proportion of people buying arma 3 will be new noobies & having everything internal lessens confussion. I mean if u go the launcher route and ur actually inside the game and try to join a game server requiring mods, does the game then exit & fire up the launcher to download? I say keep it all internal with no limits, qazdar :-P

    Automatic Mod Downloading

This would be a great addition! Bis could do an awful lot more with the server browser, why have a third party external launcher when the server browser could do it all? Different mods loaded bring a very different game so we should be able to filter our way through them easily. What do others want? Internal mod downloader/server browser or external program?

    Automatic Mod Downloading

Iceman is correct, my original point at the start of this post was that for a seasoned Arma vet finding, installing & trouble shooting mods falls somewhere between a 'slight pain in the ass, but worth it' and 'not worth it'. For a newbie this changes to somewhere between 'if only there was some official help/mod downloader/installer to play these amazing mods I see on armaholic' to '2 hours of research, trial and error & potential broken arma 2 install for a slightly different m4 skin, no thanks!' The problem with this is that it stratifies the arma community... (est figures) Top Tier, 10-20k of us, OFP/Arma/Arma 2 Vet, All mods installed correctly, most server admins & BIS forum members probably here. Middle Tier 20k-100k players, FPS addict, played a bit of coop/warfare, loves Dayz, doesn't fully understand mod installing, mostly uses launchers. Bottom Tier 100k-1.5million, Dayz brought them here but find they actually like Arma & would try mods but has no idea where to start, uses launcher for Dayz. Now, the top tier would love it if the other tiers could also use mods because then servers could play multiplayer with massively pimped units, visuals, sounds & maps and still have full servers. Currently if the top tier want set up a server with mods you generally only get the top tier entering because the next two tiers get put off by the brief unhelpful error messages that kick you out of a modded server. So we have a situation where only around 1% of the arma 2 customers can, with ease, fully enjoy one of arma 2's main USP's. Yes DayZ is still a mod & lots of people are managing to play it but that's beside the point. There have been 10's of thousands of mods before it and there will be 10's of thousands after it, every single one of them should be simple to download & install and be allowed to become popular. Arma 3 needs a integrated official BIS mod downloader/updater/installer like so many games have already managed to pull off successfully. Why if Half Life 2 & COD can download, install & run mods simply by clicking on a game server in the multiplayer browser can I not do this in Arma? Yes Arma mods can occasionally be a little on the large side but counter to that is the extra patience I would say Arma players have & the large mods are often very worthwhile, I44, ACE etc. If this sandbox for creativity was open to all, no matter if they are a vet or if its their very first time playing Arma (first impressions, v important) I believe it would truly take off in popularity and BIS would be looking at a unified (not stratified) player base double/treble its current size all dipping in and out of servers using different mods and having no issues with doing so. BIS should do with network capabilities as they have always done with graphics capabilities, build a framework for the future that may not be able to be fully utilised present day & wait for the hardware/download speeds to improve.

    Automatic Mod Downloading

Ok its been a while since this thread has been used but this is still v relevant. Over the summer we have witnessed an arma mod achieve great success & now become its own game. Has any decision been made on whether arma 3 will have an external bis (aided by sickboy) application for managing mod downloading or will it have an entirely internal mod downloading function similar to half life 2, cod etc? What do other feel they want? I didnt initially enjoy external apps as six used to be so complex but dayz commander has shown us how simple an interface can be & yet remain functional. The bad point is that i seem to be continually paging in/out or exiting arma completely due to broken server browser (in beta). Sickboy, any inside information you can share? :-)

    jet fighter sp missions

Although alot of fun in multiplayer warfare type scenarios I always felt the fast jet side to arma slightly lacking. Some good singleplayer missions incorporating the most important aspects of multiplayer jet flying would be good. Eg. Taking off from some rough field type runways, having a high concentration off AA on the ground attempting to take you out, deep strike/bombing missions into enemy territory and low fast flying. Throw in a little more detailed fixed wing flight model that simulates high g blackouts, vortices, realistic elections, working after burners, better high angle of attack flight conditions etc and we'd be more than happy :-)

    Higher altitudes?

Atmosphere gets less dense the higher you go until your in a vacume/space. Having some high altitude cirrus clouds and maybe a nice dark blue sky for over 50k feet would be the most realistic I think.
  12. Guys, Thought I should make you aware that there is a problem with using a windows XboX 360 game pad and Iron Front. There is an on going discussion here.. http://forum.iron-front.com/showthread.php?139-IDENTIFIED-xbox-controller-causes-stutters-Lag-while-in-any-vehicle I thought I should bring discussion here to see if anybody devs have noticed this issue. I suffer from it also, regular 2 second freezes every 2 seconds once inside a vehicle and attempting to control it with joypad. Impossble to play like that. Its a shame becuase I use joypad for all vehicles in Arma 2 and would like to do so in Iron Front. Can somebody else with an XboX controller (mines is wireless) for windows try to fly a plane (im doing so in editor) with it and let me know their results. Thanks

    Vehicle Quality

I may be wrong here but don't most tank drivers sit in a very low profile cupola? So there should be option to rotate your head and look out of the small view ports/screens whatever to your side. With no internal view you can't even rotate your head!
  14. rory_pamphilon

    Vehicle Quality

I agree, I really hope this is sorted out. One of the weakest parts of arma 2's fidelity was the non existent tank interiors. Some hardcore servers disable third person so your forced to look through a letter box which wouldn't be so bad if you could use the 4,7,9 & 6 keys to look left or right a bit. But currently on hardcore servers as a tank driver you have to turn out in order to see what's to the left or right which is definitely not what happens in real life in a warm zone.

Sickboy I apologise, I did miss the launch of this very handy sub tool of Six updater. I ran into a few problems with the complexity of Six Updater, its a brilliant program but i got lost in the options but Six Launcher is a whole different ball game. Its perfect for the requirments of 99% of the people who play day Z, simple options and GUI and it works. Its looking promising for Arma 3, if something like this was built into the game so you were not at a disadvantage using it (currently you are if trying to get into a full server, you wont get in!) and yet get all the benefits of streamlined entry into modded servers this will be really something I hope its internal to the game but im sure if its external you will make an great job of it :) Noticed a few videos on youtube of the boss talking at E3 mentioning slicker mod implementation, I think this will genuinely pay dividends once released, with physx and DX10 you now have the perfect engine with which to spawn a whole multitude of user made sub games/genres. Arma 3 will be amazing on its own but it will hopefully also serve as a portal to freedom of creation for pc gamers sick of consoles cramping their style with their arcade bullshit. Its realistic foundations heighten anything thats layed ontop of it, zombies become scarier, ww2 becomes more brutal.. who knows whats next! BIS are one of the few companies who realise gamers have grown up :)

    STEAM troubleshooting

Is there an example of this batch file anywhere? im looking to give the betas a try with Day Z and nearly all server are running beta now so cant get on them with standard version. Running Arma 2 CO on Steam with Baf & PLC. Have installed 93415. When I fire up Arma 2 beta using the supplied shortcut arma 2 isnt loaded and i get kicked from games for not having cherno installed. Thanks

    Server queue system

Arma 2 definately needs this, as does arma 3. Day Z popularity has shown how poorly arma servers handle influx of players. A que system is civilised and rewards the patient, not the one with fastest finger, which is what arma is all about isn't it? This would cut down on server traffic as u wld no longer have people spamming to get in. Other games have this, arma needs it badly. Do the British thing and que like gentlemen :-)

    Automatic Mod Downloading

Gossamer is correct. I never said there was no solution in place for mod downloading, what is lacking is a solution that meets the following criteria... Is bundled with the game, preferably internal to the game so nobody has to visit any third party websites. Is incredibly easy to use so that the noobiest noob that has just moved from console gaming to experience real gaming can use it Allows the player to join any server running any mods with zero errors popping up, so long as they appreciate that big mods will take a while to download. Disabling of mods that aren't allowed on the server and asking if download/enabling a mod that is optional for server is wanted. Some form of smart updating that only downloads what has changed on a mod revision. I know six Updater does all this and is a great program in its own right but it is far too complex. Iv been building pcs since I was 14, I like to think I'm reasonably well versed in IT and pc games especially but even i was lost in all the options available. I right clicked on a mod a options list opened up with 15 or so choices, I hover over one and another 15 open with different options for downloading/updating. We need simplicity, a server list that shows mods running. U click join, it downloads what is missing / disables what isn't allowed and your in. We need console simplicity in the solution. Any less and massive amounts of customers will be lost.

    Automatic Mod Downloading

I'm not 100% sure what your asking but il give tougher best answer I can.. Currently dayZ is taking off bigtime and quite deservedly too, it builds on some of the best aspects of arma, the amazing graphics, atmosphere & sheer size of Chernarus, the rpg elements, the weapon ballistics & the open ended modding nature of arma 2. It combines all this and produces something totally new and fresh. The problem with all this is that it exposes to an even greater extent the convoluted & confusing methods you have to use to download & launch arma 2 mods. If dayZ stays into arma 3 and auto downloading is used all you would have to do is select the dayZ server you want to join and it downloads the mod for you, installs it for you, then restarts arma with mod loaded and rejoins the server. There is no messy downloading of 7-8 different zips, no combining files into one mod folder, no realisation that your running the wrong version and need to do it all again. The future solution should be simple, I like sickboys auto updater but it's far far too complicated for the majority of customers that will buy arma 3. It should be one click to join, download, install and rejoin a modded servers in Arma 3 :)

How is Arma 3 multiplayer going to be?

THIS! Warfare / CTI is the best mode iv played in Arma 2. Both teams vote in a commander who builds bases which contain vehicle and infantry factories. You take over towns a little like you take over control points in bf3 except each town is initially defended by server run AI troops and tanks. Once taken it gives you $ and gives the commander supplies to build more facs and upgrade vehicles/weapons etc. Eventually after the two teams fight towards each other to take over the AI controlled towns they meet somewhere in the middle and then the Pvp fun starts! It then becomes a race to get the most towns to get the most $ to buy the best vehicles/weapons to pummel the other team. Each human player can purchase up to 10-12 ai troops also so there are lots of mini armies walking driving around the map. Currently runs up to about 50 players but each with 12 ai means the massive maps are populated with up to 600 individual units. So u start with a rifle on your own and u can end up flying a jet later doing bombing runs on the enemy whilst ur ai drives tnks around below killing everything! Sounds confusing but trust me if you want team play and to feel what it might be like to fight in a real, large scale war, you must try it. I used to love battlefield, the open space, the vehicles... Then I played arma... Now it's all I play :-)

    Automatic Mod Downloading

If I'm honest this is the way I would see it unfolding if implemented. Allow the system to function for any size of mod, in a way, future proofing Arma 3. But I image it would mostly be used for smaller things... Balancing of warfare games by including a few more modded vehicles for weaker side (not BIS's job to balance) Inclusion of a blood mod in Pvp The excellent fire & smoke mods Etc Small Things that make a big difference but are never really used online because the mod installation process you have to go through is too fiddly and long winded. Aim at that and yet include the ability to download gigs if needed to cope with any possible future tech/bandwidth/cost possibilities.

Are you suggesting though that we use the game server as a seed? The whole point of this thread is to keep file traffic away from the game server so it doesn't lag. And also for all file sharing/downloading to cease once in a multiplayer game. The less unnecessary traffic the less lag there will be.

    Automatic Mod Downloading

LlLet's explore the torrents idea a little as it's hardly been mentioned compared to a file server. I believe we all think a file server is a good idea yet there are concerns over who would pay for it. Il admit right now it's not my area of expertise so I can't provide an answer to that but this may be where torrents shine.. Let's say burried in your arma 3 options is an opt in tickbox with a big bandwidth (and possible associated costs) warning allowing you to seed your mods to anyone else in arma 3. This would allow those with unlimited Internet connections to seed when not in an online game (would auto stop seeding when opening server browser so pings aren't effected). The advantage of this method is there would be no file server costs so file size becomes irrelevant (apart from waiting times). On its own it may not be a suitable solution as it requires atleast one person to opt in and then be playing singleplayer or editing etc so for less popular mods it may take some time to download. What if though, both methods could be used? In-game torrents for the large popular mods, ace, I44, day Z etc so nobody has to worry about forking out for the associated huge bandwidths involved. Yet direct file server links are utilised for smaller less popular mods. What do people think?
  24. rory_pamphilon

    Friend system

This is definately a good idea. Arma 3 will be popular, there will be more servers, finding your friends will be even harder! Especially if day Z has its way (hundreds of potential servers) BIS we need a BIS solution to find our friends in arma 3.

    Automatic Mod Downloading

Thanks gossamer, its nice to have somebody with a bit of 'clout' post on here, this needs as much attention as possible in my opinion. Arma has always been about pushing the limits of hardware, I remember OFP & Arma having settings that can't be used by even the most powerful hardware on release day. They future proof their engines because moores law exists, pcs inevitably get more powerful. Settings can be enabled in the future that make ur pc struggle at the moment.. So, even though downloading a 3GB mod now sounds crazy in the future Internet speeds will increase, fibre optic will be everywhere, mods will be downloaded quicker than ever. Why would anybody not want the option to automatically download, install and run a mod automatically?
