  1. my 4890 arma 2 mark with ALL settings maxed @ 1920x1080 = a measley 2334.18

posting that cuz i want to compare it to the 5870 if i get one, i am hoping it will break 3000.

btw, mark 2 sets its own view distance, it doesnt matter whaat you have yours set at.

  2. I have finally gotten arma2 to run perfectly smooth with no stuttering. At a very reasonable frame rate.

Now i didnt tweak or prod, i simply dropped some cash into a ATI5870.

replacing a pair of 1792MB GTX260 in SLI. The result was simply stunning,

The game runs like a dream, using eyefinity on three screens, 5760x1080.

I think the only thing left to do now is change my signature :)

This video card is a gem!!

    regards./

grrr. tried to pick one of these up today, no one has them. i got a 4890 which ill swap for a 5870 whenever someone around here gets them in. great to hear the game takes full advantage of it!! ive been wanting confirmation before i splurged on one. congrats on your purchase.

  3. yes that is kind of ridiculous, lets face it consoles are cheaper and more convenient for gamers than gaming PCs.

that said, i am shocked they are thinking about porting arma 2 to a console & im VERY glad they didnt take the OPFDR route & release it as all-in-one. the PC game of OFP2 looks & feels like an xbox game, pure & simple. its alright, but it doesnt have the sim feel, or the gorgeous graphics, or arma 2. if they can get port arma 2 to consoles good for them, although i would rather they focus on making what they have the best it can be.

  4. I might actually give this method a go, I only have 8gb DDR3 Ram available but having raked through the ArmA 2 folder the majority of the map related files (not including mods) are around 3.21gb. Do you think it would be possible to split these up from the original folder and run separately as mods from a RAM drive without issues?

After all it is the map loading that is causing the stuttering, 90% of the time anyways.

if you do this, can you post some kind of guide for dummies? id like to give it a try. i was doing the harvest red mission this morning & had to wait about 30 seconds -after- loading for all the textures to load up.

im also curious if anyone has tried to USB test, surely someone has a 16GB stick out there?

  5. i seem to have found a decent sweetspot of settings w/ my 4870, everything on very high except terrain (normal) postprocessing (high) shadows (high) and AA (low). i also changed the CCC settings to what maddmatt suggested and dropped the resolution to 1536x(whatever). it runs smooth most of the time; but not ideal. the eye-candy however is amazing. im sure if i do upgrade to a 5870 i can run this puppy maxed out like silk, but the 4870 does a surprisingly great job. now to find a workable solution to the popup & im a set.

ive found that for me, the antisotropic filtering + postprocessing are what really make the engine. i guess its lucky with my current card that cant handle this game w/ AA maxed that i still havent really figured out exactly what AA does on any game, but everyone seems to think its important! oh well if its required for something like smoke transparency & thats enabled on my card now, thats cool.

  6. well crysis still doesnt work 'properly' on 99.999% of systems depending on how u define that word (i mean here running smoothly at all times with all settings maxed)...and this is a way better game than crysis. alex has a good point as your system upgrades over time the game engine upgrades along with you. this will probably have to last us 2-3 years so anyone who doesnt have a brand new system will upgrade by that point.

  7. what level do u set the 'edge detect' at? ive refrained from messing around w/ the card settings since ive yet to really choke it out but i want to tweak arma 2 as much as i can for performance + quality. ive got oc'd & turned on 'edge detect' (whatever that is) but ive got it set to 8x right now. i take it if you turn AA off in the game it will override the GPU settings & disable it completely even tho 'use application settings' is unchecked?

  8. it sounds to me like unless you want to do some heavy duty work, you should get a basic elite-level gaming platform of an i7, 6GB ddr3 RAM, ati 5870. (games wont use more than 6GB & dont make the mistake i did and get 8, because its apparently actually slower (its triple channel RAM so needs to be in sets of 3 or something). get 6 or 12 u really want to go heav* i think i am going to upgrade to a 5870 myself partly because of this game but also because ill be set for another year or two (its fully direct x 11 compatible).

has anyone upgraded from a 4850/70/90 to a 5850 or 5870? i am curious what kind of difference it makes in arma 2.

  9. cjph imo a quad would be much better. i was wondering how much cpu this game was using because ive heard it was intensive and tho i couldnt run it in windowed mode i did alt-tab to my desktop & the cpu meter was at over 70% (& fell to zero in about 2/10ths of a second so it could be using all cores for all i know)

i would get the new ati 5870 if youre upgrading (or maybe the 5850 save money) thats what i plan to do :)

  10. thanks for the reply, i actually love the post-processing, in experimenting a little bit so far ive found its one of my favorite things about the graphics engine. i really like the soft-focus & lighting effect it creates (i hate sharp/jagged graphics, they seem unlifelike & annoying to me). the difference b/w high & low (or off) is huge imo. but i msgd dslyecxi on yt & he said he leaves it off, so maybe that is a minority opinion. i also agree about the shadows, i turned them way down thinking it would just make the game run faster & not really be noticeable & was surprised how different the game felt.

what about AA? i know thats a huge chore for the GPU, does anyone think its worth it?

  11. i downloaded the demo and loved it. the last mission in bootcamp where u have to enter a village and take out 6 soldiers playing as insurgents (do it without quicksaves) was as intense as anything ive done in far cry 2 which is probably my favorite 'shooter' game. i can only guess the full game is 10x better.

if you're interested these guys are selling it at $20 off for the next 14 hours (its where i bought my copy from) --

^^this is simply not true, at all. the graphics are actually WORSE (arma ii is as beautiful as any thing since far cry 2 & crysis) and i may be in the minority but i dont like the gameplay better either. as for matching arma 2 in the sim department forget about it. if i hadnt played the original OPF i might be impressed w/ OPF2 but as is i have some problems with it that may or not be fair to the designers of that game.
