  1. You can also try out some user made missions; Cypher and The Chernarus run are two single player missions which I really like a lot. Cypher being different every time you start it and The Chernarus run being a very long go everywhere mission.

No annoying bugs for me there. And these show very well that single player can indeed be a lot of fun in Arma 2.

  2. The game still often crashes for me while trying to save with an out of memory error message. Performance is very nice though.

Now tested while playing The Chernarus Run (nice mission!) which is a bigger mission which are good candidates for saving to go wrong with.

So, good performance, bad (but slowly getting better) stability.

  3. For me it does not just happen with sims (even though these are a major time consumer). I namely also like to play older games (System Shock 2 etc.) and these are often hard to get to run by themselves, but once they run not much more fiddling is needed.

Then there is indeed the simulators: The one sim which gives me most trouble being ArmA II (sadly). I know that if I run it on 1.6 KM view distance I basically can play without crashing. But somehow it keeps bothering me that I have most of the time enough fps to crank it up to 10KM view... Result? I keep fiddling.

In a way I even like it. There is some kind of satisfaction in getting a thing to run like I want it. But sometimes I notice that in certain times I almost only fiddle and never really play.

Then there is times I play more and fiddle less, but for example ArmA II keeps bothering me with its instability and thus I keep coming back to trying out new things.

Then again, yesterday I managed to get Flight Simulator X to run like a dream and the satisfaction this brings is huge. Same when I get an older game to run which gave me trouble for a long time.

All in all pc games and sims are a thing on its own. So much different hardware, configurations etc. But somehow I really like it. Other times I can though also really dislike it (when I just want to play).

I think people who like to play sims have a thing for fiddling with pcs and the software. At least I know I do have a thing for it. But only if it pays off in the end.

That said, so far ArmA II is still crashing on me often, but it is also the game (sim) I play most thanks to the great editor and possibilities :D.

  4. Have been testing more:

All of these were done on Chernarus.

First one was with UH-1 with 7 KM view distance. I could not get it to crash actually with it, probably over very long time I would, but it felt very smooth and stable. I even was able to put the view distance to 10 KM.

Second test was with SU-34 still with 10 KM view distance. Also smooth and did not crash.

Third test was again with SU-34, 10 KM view but this time 150 units added to it. The performance was quite good but it crashed quite quickly with the following errors in .rpt file:

Error: cannot load sound 'ca\dubbing\global\radio\male05\en\engagingtargete.wss', header cannot be loaded.

ErrorMessage: Out of memory (requested 1790 KB).

    footprint 697923904 KB.

    pages 16384 KB.

  5. For me the fps itself is better. But still during saving (bigger missions) and longer time playing the game often crashes. It has gotten somewhat better over time but it still happens often enough.

One of the generated errors is:

ErrorMessage: Out of memory (requested 0 KB).

    footprint 941076214 KB.

    pages 16384 KB.

    This crash came during saving.

So all in all, good performance, bad stability...

  6. I have had also a lot of trouble with Arma 2, from crappy performance to the game being very unstable. I had been trying a lot of tweaks and stuff. I even ended up disabling half of my ram.

It all did not seem to help.

Setting it all to lowest video settings gave me roughly same performance as setting it to very high.

I was also wondering all the time why the performance was so crappy and why it kept crashing all the time. I was very sure that my system could run it better than around 20 fps very low :P.

Now it is almost a year later and I guess what Alex72 said is very true about the ArmA voodoo. Also to that comes; optimize your system, try everything and be persistent.

In the end I managed to get Arma 2 to run smooth and stable without any tweaks. HT I have now still turned on (Im still not sure what the benefits with this are but it does not give trouble anymore).

Also Im running the game now at very high, 7 km view distance and 4x AA at 1680 x1050 on a single GTX275. I know someone who has a very similar system to mine but instead of a GTX275 he has 2 GTX260s and he gets way worse performance at way lower settings.

The end of the story is that according to what I have seen the last year, Arma is a hit or miss performance wise. Keep on trying things to get it to run and you might end up lucky.

In the end I noticed that for my initial trouble there was no real solution. I guess it gotten fixed over time with driver updates, patches and aforementioned voodoo :).

  7. 196.75 gives me less good performance in ArmA 2 than the older drivers. Im now getting slowdowns over time, maybe heat related? Only for Aliens vs. Predator they work like a charm to fix some nonsense.

I checked the GPU temps + fan speeds and it showed up as 87°C after running ArmA 2 for some while. The fan speed stayed at 40% - 45% allover.

  8. Ok, I have been trying now for months to get a map imported in Visitor 3. I read a lot of tutorials and still cant figure it out.

By now I have a 8192x8192 solid green mask (represents sand) and a sattelite picture of solid orange (as far as I know this should not matter?). When I try to import this the editor crashes at half of the importing.

Might this be thanks to me doing something wrong during the calculations while starting a new project?

Or is it maybe something im doing wrong in the prework already?

Im sorry for not being able to explain this better; I have not been able to make too much sense out of this all so far and I hope this helps.

    Thanks in advance!

And just after I typed this I get to load my first nothingness into the editor. Sadly I am greeted by the Bulldozer telling me that it is out of memory. Asking for 300mb where I have roughly 6 GB to work with.

    I shall try out more.

  9. I have it also, but not AI related or at least it seems. If I only load Chernarus in the editor it goes already something between 20 - 25 fps no matter where. Can go lower even in cities. Does not matter wether I play on full settings or lowest. The fps difference is only around 2 or 3 or so.

Utes runs a lot better, but where I get real good performance is with CAA1 on Sahrani (also United Sahrani with quite some AI). I get there a nice FPS which is between 40 - 60 depending on situation full settings. Arma 2 performs here actually better for me than Arma 1.

  10. Im trying to get the artillery to work with the SOM. I can call it in and everything but the Firebase is at my player character and not where the artillery is and thus they dont fire.

I have been looking at demo missions and at video tutorial but cannot get this to work whatsoever.

Does anyone have an idea how to get it so that the Firebase is at the artillery? At least I think that is the issue.

EDIT: Have copied over the template (or rather the triggers + SOM part of it) to my own mission and tried it again. Now the Firebase is at the artillery but still they dont fire. They give a confirmation and then idle. The template itself works fine.

Now also just now made the mission in Chernarus exactly like the demo and still it does not work, Firebase is at right position but still the artillery stands idle.

  11. Awesome! I will look into this if Arma 2 editing (learning) lets me which is quite unlikely. But I really love the Unreal engine 3 for its looks, wish it had more good games attached to it. Most of the ones using it now are either bad or so so with some exceptions.

With a bit of luck someone makes something very nice with this :D.

  12. It is nothing you can actually really do something about apart from getting a vaccine and that is not even a sure help. So just dont worry about it so much and see what happens.

Instead just enjoy your time and have some fun.

EDIT: And it is even the question also IF it will break out into whatever. You cannot know it and it does not bring a thing to get an headache worrying. Anyway I would love to see a "survival tutorial for apocalyptic events" :P.

EDITEDIT: Didnt read page 3, forget my advice: Prepare for impact!!!

  13. Running around yelling its a useless piece of software does not help at all. If you want to see it fixed post the bug on CIT or just wait for some patches.

Ontopic: I have managed to get rid of the Cannot commit error indeed but gotten a bunch of other errors instead. Im going to have a lot of fun with the editor and scenarios as there the problems are not or less.

  14. Can any of you who are using Maxmem parameter remove it from your shortcut and test it?

I can save now with no problem so far without that parameter, but Im going to test it more before I say that this fixed it.

Also gotten rid of it using maxmem=1024, reappeared using maxmem=1536.
