  1. Actually, it was the sunlight. I had a verocious sunbeam hitting my camera square on. Given my limited set up space, there was nowhere to move my camera to. I had a light filter, but not as effective as the ole floppy media. Good call on that one :)

Love the ole DIY though. I'm an engineering technician with construction and stage handling experience as well, so I pretty much DIY most everything I do :D

My latest is a custom switch panel I use for different flight sims, but make it versatile across the different sims.

    Also restoring both a 1926 Kennedy Model 20 radio and a 1986 Honda magna VF700C :D

Wow, that's pretty cool that you have a custom panel for flight simulators. I was thinking about building one myself, but I don't really have any idea where to start.

  2. Forgot to post a pic of my first freetrack inception:

I used 12 guage copper wire for the braces and 28AWG wire to the LED's. I used a dremel tool to file the LED's down to a flat front, rectangluar shape (for more precision tracking).

The battery pack was eventually mounted to the desk as the weight was too much. After forgetting to switch it off many times, I went USB powered (used the cable from an old mouse no longer in use).

The next modification was when I went to IR LED's (linke din my previous post).

From there I went to the side clip design to ditch the hat.

From there, I got tired of fighting the poor lighitng conditions in my room and went TIR4 w/ proclip. Gave the freetrack system to a buddy of mine who plays in total darkness no matter what time of day it is. He's still using it :)

The problem you were experiencing with Freetrack, has nothing at all to do with the software, or the technology itself. It is your webcam, and your LED setup that caused the problems with playing in daylight conditions. My VX1000 webcam has it's IR filter removed, and I have a natural light filter attached to the lens (magnetic storage on a 3.5' floppy disk as the filter, cut into the shape and size of a quarter), which allows head tracking in virtually any lighting condition. Glad to hear that you found a solution that works for you though :) I will admit, Freetrack does take some time to set up properly, but for DIYers, it's a fun project, and is very rewarding.

  3. In response to how does Freetrack compare with TrackIR, Freetrack outputs the FPS at 120, exactly the same as TrackIR. The sample FPS all depends on the webcam that you use. I use a Microsoft VX1000 webcam, and it's sample FPS is 30FPS at 320x240. This webcam is PERFECT for Freetrack. I spent $20 on the VX1000 webcam from FRYs electronics, and $7 at Radio Shack for 3, high output, Infrared LEDs (part # 276-143). You can also use a Wii remote as well, the sample FPS on the Wii remote is 120FPS. I will post up some pictures of my freetrack setup, as well as the dimensions I used, a little bit later. My Freetrack setup is a 3-point ballcap, that just clips onto the bill of my hat, and the IR LEDs extend from the front. I am glad that I didn't spend upwards of $200 for a TrackIR setup, when I built one for much less. The satisfaction of building it, and seeing it track your head movement for the first time is amazing :)

Thank you so much BIS for adding Freetrack support to this game!!!

  4. That's what I thought. So what's a good pagefile setting these days? 512MB for a system with 4GB of RAM perhaps? Or just let Windows deal with it (surely with Win7 MS has improved in this area)?

You don't want the pagefile to be too low, just in case some program needs the extra memory. 4GB of RAM, I would just let windows manage the pagefile, especially with Windows 7. I actually saw a performance decrease when I set my pagefile manually.

  5. Why on earth would you want the pagefile to be something huge like 6GB when you have 4GB of RAM? And the logic of setting up a larger page file as you have more RAM seems backwards.

The more RAM you have should mean less need for a large pagefile.

The tweaking of the pagefile is generally meant for people with low RAM. Most of the information about pagefile tweaking came from when people had Win9x/2000/XP with 256MB-1GB of ram, and they wanted to squeeze out every last ounce of performance. Larger amounts of RAM don't really fit into the whole 1.5x equation anymore. Thus, tweaking the pagefile when you have large amounts of RAM will not do any good; it may actually make performance worse.

  6. I gave my opinion based on me playing the game on 5 computers, I relize that some have issues with the game while others dont. The game is not optimized that great, but its worked and was PLAYABLE on every computer I tried it on (Yes it ran worse then I expected on a few of those computers, same as you.. they are good PCs but just didnt run at that great of FPS like I thought they would ahve.. but the game WAS PLAYABLE).

Even if you have issues with the game its still not UNPLAYABLE. You might get low FPS but it IS PLAYABLE. There are no game ending problems in ARMA2 from my experience. If you are having issues in the cities then that sucks, in my experience the game is awesome and I stated MY OPINION, deal with it.

"The game is very playable, anyone who says its not playable at all either has a crap computer or is just being silly imo."

^^ That is what I said, meaning people who say ITS NOT PLAYABLE AT ALL (see how I said NOT PLAYABLE AT ALL??) are lying. I didnt say there are NO problems what so ever, what I said was that if people tell you the game doesnt work or is NOT PLAYABLE AT ALL, then thats complete BS. Ive tried the game on low end PC's up to High end pcs, with NO ground breaking issues. Yes it has small issues and some people have more problems then others. But Ill say it again.. The game is NOT "UNPLAYABLE". I stick by that 100%, of course some people are going to have issues while others are not and I relize that, what I dont liek is when trolls come on the forum and say the game is completly UNPLAYABLE with tons of GAMEBREAKING ISSUES.

One of my friends gets 15-20 FPS on LOW and thats it, he admits the game has issues, but never once has he said ITS COMPLETELY UNPLAYABLE or has gamebreaking issues. Yes it could be more stable but there is nothing UNPLAYABLE about ARMA2 imo.

Im sorry you dont get 30+ FPS in cities, that must suck alot, especially with the PC you have, as its definatly not a bad computer by anymeans. I wasnt saying that anyone who has any issues with ARMA2 has a trashy computer, I was saying that people who say its completely unplayable are either being very silly or have bad computers and are trying to play the game with settings to high (I relize that people with good computers can have issues with some games, lord knows my PC doesnt like COD:WAW for some reason, but can run Crysis, Empire Total War and ARMA2 well). The last thing I was trying to do was bash you or anyone else who owns a good computer and ARMA2 and has dissapointing FPS. Was just saying that dispite it running at dissapointing FPS on a few PCs I tried, it was still very playable.

Ok, thanks for the reply. I now understand your position. I didn't quite understand initially that you were referring to people saying that the game is completely unplayable. Thankfully, I am not one of those people. I can play most of the game fine; however, I do experience some bad FPS loss in certain areas (battles in cities, harvest red mission), but it was playable enough to where I could continue on with the campaign. With all that being said though, we are in dire need of a new patch, and I am hoping that the next patch will fix the performance issues.

  7. The game is very playable, anyone who says its not playable at all either has a crap computer or is just being silly imo.

The game is awesome, highly reccomended, but then again I LOVED Operation Flashpoint, and you seem to have hated it so I donno.

The game has awesome user made missions, great realistic gameplay, nice graphics, good sound, fun online and a decent campaign. Love the game personally.

Jumping to conclusions about the performance issues is a bit harsh. Just because you personally don't have any performance issues, doesn't mean that a lot of other people don't. You are basically saying that my computer is crap, or I am acting silly because I have performance issues with ArmA II. Thanks a lot. Check my signature... My computer is not top end by any means, but it's more than adequate, and it is above the recommended specs. I don't think it's too much to ask for 30+ FPS in cities...

  8. I think i may have jumped to conclusions, performance was great when i first made this change, but it also seems to have made my game wildly unstable. This game is just so hard for me to tell what is causing the problems, be it mods or just what is going on in the game.

It is hard for practically everyone to run the game with good performance. I've tried so many different little tweaks here and there, and nothing has really worked for me at all, except lowering the graphics in the game. The bottom line is, the game is not optimized properly, and Bohemia Interactive needs to fix the performance issues in the game. People with recommended hardware can't seem to get good performance out of the game, so there is definitely something wrong with it.

  9. this worries me as I did not have broken sound with any guns...v72 the only sound glitch I had was helis spooling up gave a 360 degree source.

guess I will have to dload and hold my breath.

LOL at ppl happy big bug fixed and me worried I may now have the bug... :)

Yeah I am happy it's fixed as well. I didn't notice any sounds missing until I ran the soundbug mission, and there was an obvious difference in sound between 1.03 and 1.03.58972.

  10. ok =S most of that is jargon to me

    just got lappy :)

It just means, in basic terms, that the game requires either a gaming laptop with a high end dedicated video card (which is going to be very expensive), or a high end desktop computer, which doesn't necessarily have to be as expensive as a gaming laptop, but it does have to have some very high end hardware in order to run the game without problems.

  11. No problems running the game on my system on 1600x1200 & normal details. FPS between 20-30 which is perfectly playable. People just should stop expecting 60fps even on their monster-spec PCs, this is not your typical FPS shooter.

I think you hit the nail on the head. There was one thread in this forum about performance issues where the OP said that they are running the game maxed out, with everything set to very high, but they were receiving crash to desktop issues. The OP listed their specs, and they were decent, but not ultra high-end. The consensus was for the person to lower the graphic settings down to High, and maybe at a lower resolution, but the OP wasn't buying it because they thought that their system should run the game at very high with no problems. This game will take time to mature with patches, and yes, sometimes it is frustrating to see your FPS drop down, but you can always adjust the video settings down a little lower to get the smooth gameplay that you want.

  12. Exception code: 0xc0000005 relates to an access memory violation.

Could be caused by faulty memory modules, corrupt graphics card drivers (or sound card drivers), or the way Arma 2 is accessing your memory (hence why it's more stable with -winxp and fixing the vram reading). Do you get a different crash report under Chernarus Life?

No, it's the same error with Chenarus Life. My game crashed again last night when I tried to abort a multiplayer session, but it doesn't seem to be crashing when I am playing anymore, so it has gotten better; with the exception of Chenarus Life, and exiting an online match. It had the same exception code 0xc0000005. I will take a look at what drivers I can try using for my video and sound cards. Thanks for all the help.

    Edit:

Strange thing, I just took a look at my ArmA2.cfg file, and my localVRAM entry was set back to its default setting. I forgot to make the file read only :( I went ahead and fixed it again and made it read only, so hopefully it helps!

  13. Thanks for the suggestion. I am kind of limited when it comes to drivers for my sound card, especially with Windows 7 x64, so I don't have too many drivers to choose from. The beta drivers from Creative are really bad, so I use DanielK's Windows Vista/7 driver package.

On a side note, I tried adding the switch '-winxp' to my ArmA II desktop shortcut, and I also modified ArmA2.cfg localVRAM to match my video card's memory (in bytes). It seems, after several hours of online play, that I can play coop and hold, but when it comes to playing Chenarus Life, that crashes ArmA II every time. I haven't tried Domination yet, but when I do, I will report what happens.

  14. Hi, I am having a very bad problem with ArmA II multiplayer. Every time I get into an online match, within 5-10 minutes I get a CTD. Windows says that the program is not responding. Here is the log from the event viewer:

Faulting application name: arma2.exe, version: 1.3.0.58627, time stamp: 0x4a783683

    Here's another one:

This problem happens EVERY single time I join a multiplayer game. I cannot finish a single online match because of the CTD. Now, if I install beta 58927, it works fine, except I will occasionally get a CTD when aborting the multiplayer mission. I'm stuck in between a rock and a hard place. If I use the beta 58927 to play online, there are serious audio problems with it, there is already another thread in the beta forum about this, so I won't get into detail about the audio problems with the beta. If I use non-beta patch 1.03, then I can't play any online games, but at least the audio is working properly.

    Here are my system specs:

    Gigabyte EX38-DS4 Motherboard

    Intel Core2Duo E8500 @ 3.16Ghz

    4GB DDR2-800

    PNY XLR8 nVidia GTX275 video card (Driver: GeForce/ION Driver Release 190 190.62)

Creative X-Fi Xtreme Gamer PCI sound card

    Liteon 16X DVD+R\DL burner SATA

2xWestern Digital Black 1TB SATA2 HDD (Not in RAID)

    1xWestern Digital Caviar 500GB SATA2 HDD

Thermaltake Toughpower 750W PSU (nVidia SLI certified)

    Windows 7 RTM x64

    Please help! Thanks in advance.
