  1. Hello folks, just started playing around with this mod and I hoped someone will be able to help me.

I have a Warthog HOTAS and am trying to configure inputs for the SH. Throttle seems to stick in full, even when I have both +ve and -ve directions mapped for analogue throttle. What am I doing wrong?

Also, are the "Brakes' referring to wheel brakes or speed brakes in the config?

Is anyone one else using the Warthog for Air assets?

    Thanks in advance.

The Warthog? Is that the one with two throttles that you can seperate? If so, check if you mapped them both for the analogue throttle because I don't think Arma supports 2 seperate engine configs.

  2. Outerra is NOT built for FPS, so there is no point in dreaming. Sure it is pretty but couldn't handle AI.

Outerra, the engine itself, isn't finished yet, so you can't say what it can and can't handle yet. And yes the game they're building it for "Anteworld", won't be an FPS. But its theoratically possible because of the way Outerra handels the rendering aspect of the game. On top of that they have a better physics engine now than Arma ever had, and they are working on fully dynamic destruction, which you can already test in the demo by the way.

Besides, the Anteworld game is a very ambitious project. They want to simulate contstruciton and economy on a very accurate schale, and more massive than ever before, including things like traffic, pedestrians, air traffic etc. So I don't see why it couldn't handle AI in that sense.

  3. no idea as from modmaking perspective, but are there many engines out there, cappable to do same stuff real virtuality enginge able to do? For example the fameous frostbite engine. Never seen maps, bigger then a size of spittle on it.

    Outerra planetary rendering engine: http://www.outerra.com/

Though I believe this is not being built for a FPS game, it could (theoratically) be used for one.

The way it works is that it doesn't acutally render the entire planet, only that which is near you and not beyond the horizon. Given that is still a huge aera especially if you're up high, but it works really well. It constantly downloads and uploads data simultaniously to a server.

The only limitaiton it has really is the speed at which this happens. If you have a slow connection it can take a while for the data is fully recieved. However, even then it actually does a splendid job at rendering vast enviroments. Ofcourse there's not a whole lot to fill the world with. Trees and grass mostly, but is also still in early pre-alpha state.

You can download the demo and fly a MIG-21 at top speed at about 10 km up and not have much in the way of popping textures. I think this is where we're headed with gaming technolog, and I like it :D.

  4. Well as much as i would like to have smoke hang about for a few minutes or longer il try my best. In large engagements and more so MP its just too damn much stress to the engine and performance begins to get hammered. Not to mention with an already struggling engine unable to run at the moment, adding even more demand is just not right anymore.

Im trying my best to make this version the best i can as stable and optimized as possible which is why im taking a bit longer obv, because i'll be quite honest i think this will be the last mod il make for the ArmA series. Until we get a better more efficient and better optimized engine than what we currently have which imo is just too out dated and just not cool anymore. We have a fantastic game but its built on a engine thats well past its use by date. I have to admit i don't even play A3 anymore, i only start it up after ive made some changes to the mod to see the effects, tbh im just not interested anymore. Anyway enough of the negatives waves, i will still make the mod as best i can.

Don't sweat it, take as much time as you need. I understand that it can get frustrating having to work around the same problems, even after all these years BI has don so little to actually make the engine work the way its supposed to. And you're not the only one. A lot of modders are leaving the Arma series behind and focussing on other projects (Groundbranch and Outerra lookspretty promising).

Anyway, still really looking forward to it OS! I hope you think twice about stopping with Arma, but I can't force you to stay. I wouldn't want you to stay if its no fun for you anymore ;)

  5. So I figuered it out, I indeed had to press "R", thanks rory_pamphilon. But now I have another question/suggestion. It seems to me when using the AMRAAM, it is a little to easy for the Buzzard planes to shake them off using flares. As far as I know, the AIM-120 uses semi active rader homing to track its target, and a couple of flares shouldn't be to much of a problem.

I can remember in a game that I adored very much, Ace Combat 6, when using the AIM-120, a circle appeard on the HUD which you had to use to track the target giving the missle almost a 100% hit rate. And the only effective counter measure to this sort of weapon is powerfull jamming.

So maybe its an idea to add a a similair system to the F-18 and SU-35, an ability to guide the missle on the target. I believe the real AMRAAM actually seeks out the target using the illumination of the airplane, and then turns on its own radar to guide it towards the target, so its sort of an semi-fire and forget missle.

Maybe a secondary countermeasure in the form of a powerfull jamming rader that you can light up for maybe 30 sec, but then has to recharge for a couple of minutes.

  6. I was wondering if anyone has heard anything about the ACE mod recently.

The last I've heard is that it was under development about 6 months back. But the latest offcial news is still that they "have plans" as stated on the developers network of ACE: http://wiki.ace-mod.net/ACE_future_plans_and_ARMA_3

However I've also heard rumors that some of the original dev's have abandoned the project bacause Arma 3 a steam only game, and that the mod has a doubtfull future in Arma 3. As stated in the article it says that they will try to release the first build of ACE 3, if I can call it that, as close to release as possible. I can Remember that the first news of ACE 2 was announced about two months after A2's release.

So I'm just wondering if they really are developing ACE 3, why haven't we heard anything yet? Not even a single post or update I could find on the development.

I really enjoyed the ACE mod for Arma 2, and I believe a large part of the community too. So what's going on?

  7. I am asking again for some kind of community guide on how to change the effects.

Because Ive searched literally everywhere and couldnt find a good source.

OS you are obviously communitys lead on this theme - could you pls make a guide? I am willing to help in any kind I can if that helps. And I really mean any.

As stated before I need good effects to make this game worth the time. So I really would agree to put some effort in it.

    Greetz

Well in the beginning of the video it said "Work in progress". Which usually means that what you see is subject to change. There could be any number of reasons why OS decided to change whatever you see is diffrent. Because the way I see it the effects in that video are pretty much exactly what it looks like in OA.

  8. I'm a 47 year old man, so I'm past my prime with my brain :p I have three other brothers....two are math prodigies, while my 3rd brother is like myself (more Street smart than book smart...the two other brothers aren't so street smart, but book smart.).

I went to college and ended up with a 3.5 GPA. I did really well in the "Social" classes (History / Philosophy / and such), but just sucked at the sciences....I got "B's", but I struggled to get them. I took College Algebra as a Freshman (worked my tail off with the Grad Assist. after many classes) and barley got a "B" - so I knew at that point I was pretty much done with Math and Science ;) Anyway..... I went to college to be a History Major / Philosophy Major, not a Math / Science major. BTW...most of the Sciences are based on Math...math is the basic core of Science.

As for coding and scripting, it's all "Greek" to me. I look at it, but it might as well be another language. My two "Math" brothers would say, "Pfffft, piece of cake".... but if I then started to talk to them about Current Events, Politics, and History - then they become hopelessly lost. LOL

YOU ARE NOT PAST YOUR PRIME!! God, sorry to say this but you must live a boring life. I mean seriously, no offense but cmon man. Get off your ass. If you want to do something go and do it. Nothing they ever tought you at school can be as powerfull as you making the decesion to go and do something you like. YOU'RE 47 FOR GODS SAKE!!! You havn't even begun to scratch the surface by the looks of it, and just because you think you're past you prime you feel worthless. But you arn't.

The brain isn't a bone, its not something ridged that grows once and then stops. Its a muscle, no matter what your age you can always flex it and more importantly, you can train it till the day you die.

You want to be a modder? You want to be a game developer? We live in the 21 century, you don't even need books. Get some info on the web on basic scripting, get a simple game engine like Unity and start messing around. You'll discover soon enough if its something you want to spend time on, time that, you in your own words have told, isn't being spent productively anyhow.

Hell you could even start by making you're own missions in the Arma III editor, which uses even a simpler coding system: when this occurs => this => do that.

I'll post no more on the matter because I feel like we're drifting of topic. But I'll say this: education is what you make of it. Apart from the "I'm past my prime" bit you seem like a smart guy to me. Otherwise you wouldn't play Arma and go out of your way to post messages on the forum.

But education is what you make of it. For some reason we are believed to be able to function in life after we spend 2 decades behind a desk listening to people who we've beent told by other people know what they're talking about because they have beent told the same when they were in school. The truth is that each brain is so complex and so unique that we can not expect to get to the point of succes promised us by our teachers, coaches and parents by way of the massive school system that is in place in every modern society.

I live in the Netherlands and over here about 99% of the students make it thrue primary school, 90% thrue middleschool, 80% thrue highschool, 20% thrue collage and another 15% make it thrue University. That is poor, very poor compared to the promises made by our surroudings of happines.

But knowledge isn't happynes, statisfying curiousity is, and everyone is born curious. So I won't feel sorry for you because the fact of the matter is that I'm 20 and I just dropped out of collage, and I won't feel sorry for myself. I'll feel sorry when I don't take the chance to become the best I can be. And if I try my whole life and die unsatisfied, my last breath will be that I didn't reach my prime, but that won't happen because I'm 20, and you're 47 and it won't happen to you either.

  9. Oh man... You guys got me so pumped :D!

I have one more question though.

Spartan said that you guys chose the SU-35E

    Then I saw this video:

...and saw that there are actually two variants of the Superflanker the SU-35E and Su-35BM, with the BM being the latest iteration. However the SU-35E has two canards beside the cockpit as shown in the video as one of the diffrences between the two models. But in those screenshots I don't see them

So which version are you guys pricisely modding, the E or the BM? Or is it just unifinished modeling?

Either way looking forward to the upcoming updates and keep up the good work!!

  10. Do you lads think that we should do BI job? So far all our work is more or less based on features within a vanilla game engine. All complex things can be done, like proper weapons targeting and damage model, but it will take time that we are running short, also SU35 project + one more we are involved in is taking all our time to deliver new "toys" fox Xmas.

I actually do ;), because I think you do it better than BI. Anyway, I don't think you guys should rush yourselves. Its something that I always fear with some community modders, they feel like they have som sort of obligation when a big hype forms around their project but they don't.

Remember, you are fans too, and you want to play too, its not within the community's power to make you do anything. Don't get me wrong I start gasping at the range of features you guys have planned and I would love to see some of those implemented before christmas. But there should always be quality of quantity, and I'm sure you guys have lives too.

Sooo... just take it easy alright? Promise me you won't be rushed and don't feel obligated to deliver anything out of your grasp.

  11. Yes, I agree 100%. But the beautiful thing about ArmA is the "Armaverse".... this community is second-to-none. We are all here to support each other....especially those that make mod's. I don't have a scientific mind (struggled with math in High School), so I have a hard time with scripting and such....but if I could, I would mod stuff for the community because I've got quite-a-bit of time on my hands. Anyway........

Just because you think you're no good at math doesn't mean you can mod though. You might have gotton bad grades in math because the way math is tought in schools up untill this day is too restrictive and too theoratical. You know who else sucked at math? Albert Einstein, but he was fascinated by the world around him and by physics so he developed his mind on his own and became one of the most celebrated scientists in history. Not because he liked math, but because his mind forced him to use math to come up with the problems and solutions his head was at.

Education isn't about grades, its not about enlarging you body of knowledge, its about trying to become better. And if you wanna mod, if you REALLY wanna mod, there's nothing stopping you. Especially if you feel you have the time on your hands. Besides that, modding isn't just writing lines of code. As you will see and hear in this project there are other people supporting Opticalsnare who have specialities in moddeling, texturering, animating etc. So if you want to make somethinkg cool, don't think you're on you're own, bucause some of the best mods are made by people who have had a lot of help.
