I had the same problem... I tried removing the folder in regedit, but that didnt work. I tried patching it but didnt test it first, so I installed the directx pack that was on the original disc and it worked! So I do not know if it was the patching or installing the directx from the original disc that helped, but you can try directx first, then the patch if installing directx doesnt work.

I click on the shortcut/.exe and it loads and a process comes up. After a couple of seconds it stops loading and the process is gone, usually after I restart the computer. There is a message box reading : "!!! MISSING STRING" Why won't my game start? It cost me about 409 swedish crownes :S Problem solved, no need to answer...
