  1. Look, are there any processors out there that never let the fps dip below 30? I don't think I'll ever upgrade until the day this happens. I have a setup that can kinda sorta handle ArmA 2, so I consider it unthinkable to spend money upgrading a PC (that was purpose-built for ArmA 2) when no matter how much I spend, I will still run into stuttering.

p.s. has anyone tried one of those dual xeon setups?

  2. I think it's unnecessary to see trees 6000 meters afar, we should emphasize on combat, not on watching scenery.

I've got a hundred bucks that says this guy didn't even read the thread. lol

How constructive... Sarcasm isn't something that translates well through text. I'm sure that you're perfectly content to snipe enemies as a result of a graphical oversight, anyways. Happy canned hunting.

And obviously humour doesn't translate very well either.....

Evidently not when you have a dense head like mine. Sorry dude.:o

  3. :391:

Grass rendered at such distances (6000 meters) in the current ARMA2 engine would be unnecessary and be the cause of major performance problems. There would be absolutely no real visual improvement having grass that is rendered and therefore rendered pointless at up to 6000meters. 1000meters? Maybe. This is common sense.

However, most likely with a remake of the engine then grass could be viewable at super distances when only rendering it when zoomed in on the location/when necessary for visual impact .

Yeah, galzohar was right. I assumed 6000 meters, and was wrong. I think you've got the right idea with 1000 meters.

And again, I didn't ask because I'm some graphics nut. It all goes back to the unfair tactical advantage.

  4. Having Unlimited Grass is something I think about a lot...

we could see a patch that allows for grass to be rendered (however poorly) at the full 6000 meters that trees are.

I don't get this. Attempt at a quote?

  5. unnecessary. the human eye can't even discern objects that far away so why bother? it'll look like a flat patch of green, like how it currently is.

if you're talking about objects showing up hen you zoom in on it, then that's already possible, just not on this engine.

The second sentence answers my question. Very concise, thank you. You have experience messing with the engine, then?

When did you see a tree from 6000m in this game? I sure as hell never did.

Every increment of the view distance slider reveals more trees all the way up to 6000m. After that, only terrain seems to extend further. Maybe the 6000m is a circumference, instead of a diameter. ie: maybe 6000m view distance is really 3000m out from point of the player's eye. I don't know.

  6. Well just for the record, I'm not nit-picking with the every blade of grass thing. My only problem is that some poor sap will be hiding in the bushes, and I pick him off easy as pie from 500m. I would just want something there so that if I'm hiding in bushes here, it is also true there. Does that make any sense?

to be honest, even if you had a pc that could handle it, I don't think you would notice grass rendered out to 6000 meters. I'd say the max you could see it at would be maybe 500m. Even in the real world, grass (unless its very long) just looks like green ground (eg a texture) after about 500m.

I thought I covered the PC handling it thing when I said eventually... On the green ground I'm with you, however that would be maintained grass like in your yard. Much, if not all the grass in ArmA 2 is quite long like 2 feet tall.

  7. I think unless we get to a point where all grass is displayed as far out as you can see, grass is an unfair advantage to any attacking team. You can sit on a hill and pick off some poor guy who thinks he's hidden, but you're more than 200m away.

Since he's prone, for example, he thinks he's hidden and can't see you. However you can clearly see him. Crappy.

  8. I've been playing Domination and quite enjoying it. That said, I'm growing tired of the AI enemy. Are there any game modes that are like a human-only Domination (real people on both sides)? I must say though, I don't want to limit myself to one game mode. Any other mode suggestions would be welcome. Thanks in advance, ArmA community.

  9. But you know... you alienate a huge percentage because it is overwhelming. I had to push myself to give Arma 2 a chance... and the ONLY reason I did, is because I felt the physics in the game were the excellent and that it had a potential to be a great sim. Personally, I find that the AI is lacking tremendously. There is WAY too much hand holding on the team AI's part.

If I compare OFP2 and Arma 2, I have to say that Arma 2 beats it hands down, but BIS could take some notes here, as I find the team AI 100x times better in OFP2 and I have to say it runs 100x smoother (because it's a consolized PC game). OFP2 just feels entirely artificial and does not have any realism aspect to it at all. Even the characters movements are terrible. Look at that medic giving a hypodermic injection to heal the player? Just terrible!

If they'd have worked together, they may have actually produced a fantastic sim... but I know the OFP days are over...

I got to thinking about just this topic while watching a stream of somebody playing DR. It seems like for the most part, where one developer fell short, the other excelled. Barring collisions in creative vision, they might just create the ultimate war simulator in a joint-venture that is sure to never happen. :(

Once you learnt and remember all the commands its ok.

But i 100% agree on the bugs tho BIS are still very bad at releasing games and should serously improve their quality control. I think this is the overall reason why people are turned off and also that ArmA 2 requires alot of hardware to run it at a decent a framerate.

I agree on the quality control part, but I disagree on the hardware part because my CPU cost $60 and my GPU cost me $35, and i get decent frame rates on high settings. Sure, if you want to go balls out cranking up every graphics setting, you're gonna be spending a huge chunk of change, but just to play it at normal to high w/o AA or PPE doesn't cost that much. Not to mention, it still looks great at these settings.

  10. The AI remember the seat they were last in, making it easier to disembark and have them all get back in at the same seats they were in. Basically, if you want an AI to get in gunner position just tell him to board the car at gunner position and he'll remember that he's gunner until you put him elsewhere.

As for the position, you can't tell the AI where you are, that's really just there for the AI to report their positions, but you can tell the AI to move to a location near you then when they have you in sight tell them to regroup.

Well, when I played MP last night when prompted by an AI friendly, the soldier I was controlling seemed to automatically report his position, because he said, "I'm at 667854(or whatever number)". There must be a command if the game did it for me, and they ask you. I can't imagine that BI would create a communication that can't be responded to. Also, I already tried that workaround way of instructing them to go to that tree, for example, and he again responds with, "Where are you?" lol. I guess because he doesn't know to which tree I was referring. :)

    I know, I'm hopeless.

  11. I am also a noob, and the answer to my problem is probably simple. Anyway, here it goes: Every time I'm riding in the back of an LAV and get sick of waiting for the AI gunner to engage a target, I tend to just jump in the gunner position myself. However, after I do so, I move to the back seat and nobody retakes the gunner position even if I order all to disembark, then order all to get in LAV. How do I get the gunner to retake his gunner position, instead of sitting in the back seat? It's like he's offended, lol.

Also, when your AI teammates ask your position, how do you tell them?

  12. Even for the ludicrously good price, I wouldn't bother with SLI. It just seems to cause more hassle than it's worth. Also, to support two cards, you'd need good cooling and possibly a new PSU.

If UPS would ever show up, I will have that (cooling and power) covered. I bought an Antec Three Hundred case and an Antec Earthwatts 650w PSU. Are we lookin' at like 5 fps gain or something?

Also, what kind of a performance will I get with the single card setup?
