  1. Wow. I don't know how old you are, but I'm amazed you've lived this far without the powers of logic.

    Men are represented in many amazing and fantastic ways in A3, yet not one.single.female is represented. Not one. That's half the human race. Half.

    Same to you. To think that when there isn't a representation of part of the populace in a game that the devs are misogynists but not that there was a technical difficulty.

    Where is the logic to that?

  2. So the only conclusion you came is that BI devs are sexist it couldn't be that they based all of their computer characters to one model and making a woman character might look strange.

    Where are the old people? BI hates old people.

    Where are the fat people? BI hates fat people.

    Where are the children? BI hates children.

    Where is the limping old woman from Arma 2? BI hates disabled people.

  3. Of course you understand you are asking something that even BI haven't done yet (at least public).

    Well..i m actually curious if this is even doable..and what the possible consequences on the (already burdened) performance


    I am not on my pc to test it in Arma 3 but from what I remember PIP in vehicles is lower resolution, lower framerate and I believe it had some lag. All things that you would want to avoid while scoped in.

  4. You could have bought that digital download for $45 last night... but good luck on finding an appropriate DVD to import; we sure could use an answer re: the "region" status on any Arma 3 imported discs.


    Not sure if I am reading the steam database info correctly but it seems that the Russian and Asian retail versions are region locked. Morphicon (EU?), Czech and Australian versions seem not region locked. Again, not sure.

  5. How do I find the missions. I have found what appears to be a main pbo folder, just trying the find the mission with the armour battle and taking the factory etc

    Main part of the missions should be at missions_f.pbo, missions_f_beta.pbo and missions_f_gamma.pbo but there are more supporting pbo.

  6. Well if you know different or don't want to experiment with those parameters then don't. It was from an random Arma3 performance guide I found so it's to be taken with a grain of salt. I noticed a significant improvement in fps or I wouldn't have posted it.

    I didn't correct a random guide in the internet, I corrected your post/guide in the forums that advocates using parameters that don't exist or are out of bounds. This is how placebo effects and myths are created and perpetuated by members of the community or the internet.

    So many posts lately have these magic benefits command line parameters, after a while it gets a bit annoying and difficult to ignore.

    And like you when trying to correct them it's always the same answer, I saw it in the internet (translation: not my fault), performance improved greatly (translation: don't know why but it works, it couldn't possibly be a placebo effect or something unrelated).

    On the next page of dazhbog's link there's also this. So i do think some of what i posted is valid.

    MadDogX is a moderator (probably a volunteer) that doesn't mean his opinion is Bohemia Interactive's stance.

    And his post is about how much memory a program can access "The maximum for 32bit LAA apps on 64bit systems is 4GB." not what numbers can a command line take.

  7. Not saying the game is super optimized, but, alot of people join unoptimized missions. That combined with a packed server & having to run their settings on ultra + 10k VD. Then they come here & essentially complain to BIS about someone elses bad code or because there were 900 Ai on the map, none ofe'm cached... things like that. The series has always been demanding. And people will always stuff the envelope & then complain about it. Also, comparing BF3 on ultra to Arma is comparing apples to oranges... in a major way.

    You don't need a new rig. Some things you guys could try is unparking your cores, setting the game to "high" priority with the -high startup parameter & using -nosplash, -maxmem & -cpucount startup parameters. One more thing, it's a given, but.. make sure your pc is in top shape.

    example of startup parameters:

    -noSplash -cpuCount=8 -high -maxMem=6144

    Below is a startup parameter guide to help you with these things.

    1. Go to Steam Library
    2. Go to "Arma 3" Right Click then select "Properties"
    3. Select "Set Launch Options"
    For AMD CPU users:
    AMD Dual Core with 4GB System Ram:
    "-noSplash -cpuCount=2 -high"
    AMD Quad Core with 4GB Ram:
    "-noSplash -cpuCount=4 -high"
    AMD Six Core with 4GB Ram:
    "-noSplash -cpuCount=6 -high"
    AMD Eight Core with 4GB Ram:
    "-noSplash -cpuCount=8 -high"
    If your running more than 8GB Ram then apply this to the end of the launch line:
    This will allow your game to utilize 8GB system Ram instead of 4GB.
    Intel CPU:
    For Hyperthreaded CPU's such as a Quad Core you will apply this:
    This will enable your Hyperthreads on your CPU so your CPU will act as an eight core when running Arma 3.
    If you are running a Hyperthreaded Six Core then:
    If you are running a Hyperthreaded Eight Core or Eight Core Xeon then apply this:
    If you are running just a non Hyperthreaded CPU such as a Quad Core then select "4" instead of "8" same for a Dual Core you will select "2" instead of "4".
    All AMD CPU's are NOT Hyperthreaded so Hyperthreaded options is highly not recommended as this can cause system failure or damage.
    I will not be responible for system failure and damage if you choose to select more cores then you have on your command line!
    makes your operating system prioritize services and processes to run your game better but this can cause system failure and instability if you dont have a good running system. If you Overclock this can cause system instability.
    disables startup videos and advertisements.
    enables extra CPU cores and Hyperthreads.
    when set to "6144" (6GB) and up lets your game use more system Ram then 4GB.
    Do not set to higher than 4GB if you dont have at least 8GB. You can set to "8192" (8GB) if you have 12GB+ Ram.

    AFAIK -high does not exist, can't remember a dev ever mentioning it, BI wiki doesn't mention it, when I check task manager priority hasn't changed and if you string search arma3.exe it doesn't pop up with the other command line switches.

    And -maxmem doesn't use more than 2047, anything more defaults to 2047, with recent confirmation from 2 Devs.

    ye the -maxmem= is softcoded to 2047, more (e.g. 3071) wasn't yet added ... (at least i'm not aware of that)

    Here is some more info about memory usage and a workaround for increasing available memory to 3GB (I think it's needed only for 32-bit windows).

    we have changed memory limits on 32bit OS to improve Altis performance, as described here http://forums.bistudio.com/showthread.php?149636-Beta-Development-branch-changelog&p=2481746&viewfull=1#post2481746.

    I'll try to explain what is it about in more detail and I'll offer a workaround for the problem.


    Processes on 32bit OS are by default limited to 2GB of virtual memory. Arma 3 detects this and sets its internal virtual memory limit accordingly. Before the change this meant 768MB. The number might seem low but it's purpose is to give Arma 3 big enough reserve for the internal memory manager to allocate and deallocate memory dynamically based on the mission and situation. Unfortunatelly this limit was rather low for Altis which resulted in too many allocations/deallocations which completely killed FPS.

    We have increased the limit to 1.2GB so the memory manager is able to hold Altis in memory (which fixed the performance issue) but it decreases the reserve. The drawback is that in certain situations where the memory manager cannot (or is not quick enough to) free enough memory the game might crash with an "Out of memory" error. This might be for example problematic with bigger view distance because: bigger view distance -> more objects -> more memory.

    The internal virtual memory limit can be overriden with the -maxmem parameter but note that it only takes 3/4 of the number for the virtual memory:


     arma3.exe -maxmem=1600 (sets virtual memory limit to 1.2GB)

    So you can experiment with the number and see what works best for you but the truth is that with the 2GB system limit there is not much room to work with.


    A workaround for this problem is to tell windows to change the 2GB memory limit to 3GB. Arma 3 will detect this and change internal limits automatically so there's no need to override with -maxmem parameter. With this workaround you shouldn't have any problems with performance or stability.

    The system limit has to be changed manually but the process is fairly simple. Described for example here: http://dwf.blogs.com/beyond_the_paper/2009/04/enabling-3gb-switch-on-windows-vista.html.

    TL;DR Please stop spreading misinformation.

  8. I experience some strange stutter due to video memory.

    Using 4GB gfx cards while I fly in Altis the video memory usage will keep increasing till it reaches around 2.4GB and then suddenly I will get a little stutter and video memory usage will drop by 700-800MB.

    It will again start gradually increasing and if I look behind me there will be stutter and the terrain will be blurry. Seems like Arma 3 fills available video memory and when it reaches a point it clears part of it and starts filling it again but the way it does it is not so smooth.

    In Arma 2 I would reach my maximum video memory usage and it would usually stay there.

    To the Devs, can Arma 3 utilize all the memory of our gfx cards or is there a limit?

    Really enjoying the Arma 3 beta for a while now but I recently noticed that sometimes my texture quality is automatically set from very high back to high.

    I guess this has something to do with my videocard (Asus GTX560ti DCII) only having 1GB of memory which Arma 3 deems too little. The thing is, everything is running great even with texture quality set to very high.

    My question is the following: is there anyway to prevent Arma 3 from automatically lowering the texture quality? Can I somehow force the game to always use a specific (in my case very high) texture setting?

    You could try lowering graphics settings that use video memory, not sure but those should be resolution, sampling (if over 100% not sure for below) and AA. This would give you more memory in expense of visual quality.

    Wouldn't hurt to run a GPU monitoring program (MSI Afterburner) to monitor if your video ram is fully utilized.

  10. my pc does quite well well all settings maxed out and view distance on/around 4000 - 5000 and object distance 3500 (that's all you need to be honest)

    I get 40-45-50fps like that.

    however, I changed the settings so the view distance is 4000 and object is what the game sets it too when the viewdistance is changed.

    you can see my rig in the spoiler and it cost me around 3.5K :/

    (bugger thing is still in for repair - water cool kit went bye bye)

    yeah so you can run it on high settings no doubt :) just the altis memory thing has affected this since :(

    He said highest settings which is 12K for view and object distance.

    As he apparently is new on the forums and doesn't have Arma 3 yet, I wanted him to be prepared that he won't be able to do anything meaningful at highest settings except taking pretty screenshots.

    Of course if you lower your graphics settings the game will be playable, nobody denies that.

    And I tried low flying around with 5000 view distance and 3500 object distance in Altis and my frames dropped below 10 over towns and over the solar power stations which in my opinion is not playable.

    There is no known computer in the world that it will run the game on highest settings with acceptable frames.

    Maximizing view distance and object distance in an Altis town will get me less than 1 fps when I move and my pc specs are pretty much the same as yours.

    With this out of the way, the only improvement on your pc to get the most out of Arma 3 is a SSD and any overclock on your CPU you feel comfortable.

    Which SSD do you have?

    SSDs tend to lose performance (and lifespan) when you start filling them, and at the time of your test you have around 12GB free (28510MB available minus 16384MB swapfile allocated) which might be a little low.

    For example the included software with my Samsung SSD 840 Pro 500GB recommends a 10% provisioning area or 50GB. Other manufacturers might lock an area with the firmware or use both techniques.

    Don't know how much impact this would have to the game but you could test this with moving the pagefile to another drive.

  13. Have downloaded Nvidia inspector but does not lock the clocks so get the same result.

    Here is a guide but again I don't recommend it, any improvement would be minimal.

    Tried a lot of MP servers , have the same issue in all of them.

    Also thought of bottleneck, but in Single player there is no bottleneck and the engine is the same, and cpu is not at full load also in MP (in SP more CPU usage than MP, as expected however).

    This is all hypothetical (only BI Devs know) but in MP your fps is depended by the server performance (server fps).

    Worst case scenarios your fps can be affected by low bandwidth, problematic clients, script errors etc.

  14. Avoid playing night missions with night vision, and by dusk. I can only play these game times if I turn gamma and brightness almost full to fight the brightness fluctuation which helps with headache but is more straining for the eyes.

    With imgur you can add a letter (l,m,s) before the full stop and you will get smaller size images (l=large,m=medium,s=small).

    You then use the thumbnail as description to link to the full size image, click on the image and you get the full size.



  16. Is it possible to fix the gpu-clock? My old GTX570 hasn´t the dynamic overclocking feature.

    I think you might be able with nvidia inspector and definitely with bios mod but why would you?

    There would be minimal performance increase at best as the cards at the time have not much to render, reading the gpu usage.

    Can you try running the benchmark with the -maxmem=2047 parameter and see if you have lowered performance?

  17. why are you using 100% sampling with a such monster GPU ? it is pointless. use a 7790 instead .

    crank up sampling to 200% , remove or reduce FSAA. a such card is MADE for that

    From my tests sampling is cpu dependent and the image quality is worse with no FSAA applied.

    Using my previous tests where I reached 45 FPS, when I set sampling to 200% and disable FSAA my score goes to 34 FPS. Both of my cards start to run at lower speed due to the lowered GPU usage. Image quality is worse with visible flickering edges in fences.
