Could Arma 2 become a de facto Steel Beasts Pro PE?
arma2disapointed replied to cadmium77's topic in ARMA 2 & OA - SUGGESTIONS
Just tried to do it in Arma2, used 200 tanks in Utes island, the fps where at 6-7. "same settings as in operationflashpoint" Arma2 did not render the units as far as operationflashpoint did, and it was clear that the shape of the units (models) was smother, not as quadratish as in OFP. And it all comes to the cost of redused unit count, as i only used 200 of them. Render unit at full viewdistance will not have impact on FPS more then let´s say 5%. So you can have up to 100% more units in OFP then in arma2 with the same FPS. It seem like it´s going in the wrong direction, or just confirms it. Every unit must have 100% less polygones.(preferable 200 or even 400%) And the count will increas equally by 100%.(200-400%) Yes it will not look so smooth and nice, but it´s the cost you have to take, in otherside everything will move 100%(200-400%) smoother. This has always been the main problem, and i was always locking for a mod that did take away polys from the models, and always find the oposite. If you want a game with realistic artillery, anti air defance, tank wars, this is the way to do it first of all before you start with other things. Dont think its wrong to say that this is game physics it´s all about. -

Noticed how the load on CPU rising when the unit count rising? Pleas try OFP, and you see that you dont even need a GPU there.:p Then try 400 tanks and see what the GPU says about that in arma2. And then try to have 400 tanks in OFP with or without GPU, and tell me the difference. It will bee noone. The 700-800 Mhz a GPU have is rediculus compared to a CPU. Then you can shade what you want. The goal is to have 1500 units, and no GPU can help you with that. Call it software rendering or whatever you want. -

I bet it´s possible to make it render on 20 km. It´s just that OFP had some 2000 meters projectile dissapear issues. And many of those things is fixed in arma and arma2. Going to count the units again, post the fps and what comp i have. ---------- Post added at 08:29 AM ---------- Previous post was at 07:57 AM ---------- To make it clear. In OPF you can deside to what distance the units will be rendered, its called visual quality and its just a slider, when the slider is to te right it renders to full viewdistance. Did the test with 400 tanks on dessert island OFP and the Unit render slider to max with full viewdistance, and the result was about 5-7 FPS on my old comp. 400 tanks it´s somthing Really its all about polygones and model details, i tried to slide the drawdistance slider to the left, 100-200 meters renderdistance instead of 5000 meters, somthing and it just rised the fps by 1 or 2. It´s about the models are still there, but you can not see them, so it dont affect the fps. If cut the polycount in half you could have twice as many of them, but they will bee more quadratish. I like quadratish. ---------- Post added at 08:47 AM ---------- Previous post was at 08:29 AM ---------- To make it even more clear. To count polygones, the computer need a fast CPU. Or maybe several of them, as it is not possible to rise Mhz much more now then it was ten year ago. ---------- Post added at 09:06 AM ---------- Previous post was at 08:47 AM ---------- Other thing to do is. When see a tank (or other unit) i the distance it is quadratish, but so far away so you cant see this clerly. One thing to do so you can have more units is to halv this distance of when the tank (or other unit) become quadratish, so instead of beeing quadratish at 200 meters, it become quadratish at 100 or even 50 meters. It will take off the load to CPU for every unit, and will be able to have more of them. Even better to let them be quadratish all the way. In the distance let it just be a cube, dont even need to have the gun. Aim for 30 fps at 200 units. (tanks) A wheel can be of four polygones at close distanse, or dont have to bee at all, as it´s very consuming CPU power. Very, very far distance just a dot. Very far distance a cube. Far distance cube with a small cube on top. (so you can see if it´s a tank or not) I dont even need to have wheels at close distance. -

I tried Operatiobnflashpoint again, just to find out how many units with full viewdistance and low settings i could have on desert island. Turned out to bee a whole lot of units, to many to count, the computer was mid nothing special. What is need to be done is, increasing the viewdistance to 20.000 meters and add everything else from Arma2, but leave the graphics Operationflashpointish. That would be a very good start. -
The damage should depend on what ATGM is mounted. The thing i dont like is when the wheels is flat it just stop and cant move, it should be able to move even if the rubber on the wheel is shoot of:butbut: with couple of riffle shots:butbut: 30-40 km/h with no rubber is still realistic depend on what vihicle it is, weight to HP count. Just need to wrestle with the steering wheels. ---------- Post added at 07:20 AM ---------- Previous post was at 07:17 AM ---------- T-80 could take hits from 3-5 RPG´s, depend on where they hit. Dont really now why it is one hit one kill with everything now. The HP thing destroy the realism very good, maybe it should bee lucky and unluckey hit´s in some areas.

Yes it was the T-72 i was talking about, with the long gun. Also i like it in game for the real number of crew it have. Cant understand why it should be so hard to fix this in all tanks and other vihicles. It´s fun that it is a human loader in some tanks. Maybe tanks in the future will have there own toilet and a small kitchen where the crew could cook theire meals. -
Yes pleas make these tings right, it cant bee so hard. ---------- Post added at 06:36 PM ---------- Previous post was at 04:50 PM ---------- Why is that so worthless?

I think the abrams is better, the T-70 also have "short legs" so the mutch taler, bigger and heavier abrams could just run over the short and smal T-70 like a frog on the highway. 1500 HP and the T-70 only have 700-1000 HP somthing. Like the zoom in the game but dont like when the graphics shanging and objects dissapear and come up from nowhere when zooming, it´s confusing. Maybe some option in grafics to set it on "alwaysfullobjects" somthing could help, yes the load on CPU will be high, but it´s really an option that need to bee, some have giant computers others dont, and it should bee up to them to deside how they want to play the game anyway. About the grass i think that it should bee grass everywhere or nowhere so it could bee used when playing. It´s just not useful how it is now. And to force it in multiplayer demo, why? If bis want to have it just to look niceley at it,(that i could say about a lot of things) make it short so it dont affect gameplay in bad way. It´s not a painting on the wall, it´s a game. Tactical and strategical. It´s somthing like flowers on a chess board, ok it´s nice but common. If you liked operationflashpoint you like armed assault, and if you did not like it you dont like armed assault either. The flowers just wont help. -

Times up! Answer: You can see nothing and enemies can see you. The easiest way is just to shorten the grass to fix this problem, and you will be able to see. Maybe there is some other more complex way to fix this, but i dont think bis will do that, or even try, but thats just my opinion, hopfully far away from the truth. -

And that´s depends on how you define killing and witch weapons you use. Ofqourse we are all trying to improve the game, so the result would not be a mess. -

arma2disapointed replied to arma2disapointed's topic in ARMA 2 & OA - SUGGESTIONS
Yes youre right, i dont see the problem to have a loader, if you dont want to bee a loader, let the AI be him. Or a least have a option in game settings that allow 100% realism, like allpositions on/off. And there is no point to balance a military sim unit against unit, war is balanced in other ways. To say thats cheating is not serious at all. Who win the war is not the one with the longest gun. -

arma2disapointed replied to arma2disapointed's topic in ARMA 2 & OA - SUGGESTIONS
Tanks have some kind off aiming system that works in night or thrue fog if they are not from WW2 era. Current generation tanks, and then its the AA systems that have far seeing radars. It´s a military sim right? The Demo that i have is v1,02 somthing, and the fourth crew is still hiding in the abrams. So what i could understand, it should be five crews in the TUSK? Or have the TUSK a autoloader? I always hear his voice, but have never seen him, the only time was when is saw the homer´s abrams addon to OFP1, and he did not do any harm to the game in any way. ---------- Post added at 07:15 PM ---------- Previous post was at 07:03 PM ---------- What are you doing when youre riding back off the BMP? -

1) And where can i do that, Setviewdistance, why not make the slider longer? Now its no difference between 6000 and 10000 meters at all. 2) So the radar work further than the viewdistance. 3) I have the demo, and cant find the fourth crew anyway. And its hard to belive he is in the game and not in the demo. -

arma2disapointed replied to arma2disapointed's topic in ARMA 2 & OA - SUGGESTIONS
So why not set the max viewdistance at 25-40.000 m, you dont need to have more than 1000 m if you dont want to anyway, and the Radar distance could be set to 100.000 m in some case. The FPS rise with fog or bad weather. Some AA defanse could sence a aircraft at 50.000-100.000 meters, but you cant see it with the eyes. All this is simple things to edit, for those who can do it i think. ---------- Post added at 07:30 AM ---------- Previous post was at 07:21 AM ---------- Other things that could be done is to make the grass halv as short. -

I will wait and see what happens to the patches first. Yoma, sure you dont miss the viewdistance from Arma? Yes you right a lot has been done, but i still dont find the fourth crewmember in the abrams, could that bee that hard to do? I see it like a "misstake" from OFP that is still remaining, and its very strange that it still do. -

viewdistance and other dissapointments
arma2disapointed replied to arma2disapointed's topic in ARMA 2 & OA - SUGGESTIONS
The option to be a loader would make realism go upp some more, and also the inside view. To make it more clear, Operation flashpoint´s shortage has never been the graphics. There is some physical improvments in arma and arma2, but also the otherway. Thing is that computers are not mutch better now then ten years ago, 3Ghz limit was broken a long time ago, so thats why physics has "stand still" more or less last 10 years. So it´s understandable that brics dont fly when the sabbot hit a bric wall. It has always been talk about penetration values and destructable buildings, bric by bric. And always about the game engines potential, not mutch have been done there. One thing that would have make sense, is to implement all units and maps from OFP to arma and arma2, that would make it possible to have more units on map at same time, also miss the reflex missile in russian tanks. Arma2 need heavy patching to be what it could be, so lets hope on that. As i could see, its like two groups that is going in different directions, one is aiming fore realism, the other for arcade, when its mixed upp, the result is little sad, what have the arcades against the inside view anyway, does it bother them that it is possible to look from the inside? Look down to the left or right in the drivers position in a tank and see speed and fuel, what´s wrong with that? -

Think BIS allready have all addons that have been made, why do the same addon 10 times? (some have have been made like 100 times allready, and i don see a reasone to made it 101 times, keep 1 or 2 and throw away the rest) -

You cant do a game bad on purpuse just to make gamers want to do addons, there has been tousands off addons to OFP and maybe houndreds off them was realy good. Where are those addons now? Think it´s just waste off art made by goodwill gamers. Some part off thouse addons have been modified to arma. -

Give me the skills, and i would do it better in one day. Just have to read thrue the forum and see what people like and dislike about the game, and try to make it right. Sorry im not going to do any addons, there has been many good addons for OFP that has been "destroyed" and placed in arma. Once there was 4 crew in the abram addon from homer. Tanker game is a joke in arma2 now. Not very professional from BIS i think. -
