I got lucky - I stumbled across a US soldier with a SMAW launcher, that took care of the T-72 (and the BMP had already been destroyed by this point) so an assault from the woods finished off the base.

zoog, I found that if you "complete" a mission and move onto the next one, the savegames for that mission are deleted :( there might be a way around it, but I haven't found it.
