Just run up to the village main base and wait there untill the counter (see map) runs down to 0. Then the village is yours. No need to use recruited units, you can do that yourself.

I wonder what I could have done differently because:
I captured all of Chernarussia, destroyed the chDKZ base and investigated the island where I find Lopotev which I did not manage to capture but who was killed every time (I tried). I never managed to get control of the USMC and am not sure whether that was actually supposed to happen. So I destroyed the Russian base which was the only thing left to me. Then in the final mission we are nuked. How could I have avoided this???

It happens...
In the mission where you have to capture all of Chernarussia the USMC lands in Chernagorsk once you have killed Prizrak (in the NAPA line).
Just a couple of seconds after I get a script error that says something in the lines of "transfer command...script error" which makes me think I was able to take control of the USMC but it failed.
Issue related to it...
Also, USMC promises support from another team in investigating the little island off the coast but they never show up.

I played the NAPA line and at one point someone asks me to kill Prizrak and I refuse. Then (I think it's the following mission) USMC tells me I have to kill Prizrak so as to form an alliance between NAPA and CDF. I did that by waiting till nightfall and taking a shot at him from the mountain at the south of the camp.
Second time I shot him in the leg and he ran off being run over by a truck ;)

Money is never an issue imo. I just have my units take one or two villages as possible and before you know it you can afford an APC or tank. Pretty unstoppable in one of those.

Just drive him back to the HQ building at your base (it's indicated on the map). A dialog will start automatically and the POW will get out of the truck...
