I agree with you mostly, and PR looks great and will definitely give a boost to ArmA PvP. I am just a little frustrated that all these like minded people seem to ignore Advance and Secure (AAS), which delivers a good portion of what you are looking for (Focus on teamplay, capping flags in order, scorelists don't matter, roles, dynamic tactical gameplay,...) qwertz

In the US (evenings/nights), the ArmA 2 online population is peaking around 350 these days during the week.

There is your problem. Besides all these "expert" tips on the intewebz (most of them originating from Win98 days and floating around since then), it is a bad idea to disable the page file. Paging is one of the basic functions of (Windows) memory management, and I have yet so see anyone who knows better than MS how to "tweak" the Windows memory management. Paging happens even if you have free physical RAM available, and for a reason. Some programs are not functioning reliably w/o a page file. Switch it on again, and your problem will be solved. Cheers, qwertz

Hi Defunkt, don't worry, just ask your questions. Have a look here re the rulesets (one version behind, but gives you a good overview). "Public": I would suggest checking this out first as this is a quite balanced rule-set "Hardcore": has the highest realism, very limited HUD and strictes restrictions "BCA": is staying very close to the Joint Operations original "Classic": is the most accessible and non-restrictive ruleset "ArmA.ru": and "AGW" are cutomized rulesets for these two sqads/tournaments Alos have in mind that there are 2 versions for each rulesets: one with and one without AI. The AI is configured to support the gameplay only until a live player number threshold is met (and AI is switched off completely at ArmAcalypse). The vehicles are very dependent upon the mission. The mission maker decides how this is handled, e.g. if there are any vehicles (many just have transport vehicles), which ones and how many etc. Also, he can set the respawn times for each vehicle individually. With over 70 missions and growing, there is quite a variety to choose from. The rule-sets define how the respawn is handled. Some rulesets (classic for instance) do not override the mission maker's settings, some do and define global respawn times for vehicles by class. The vehicles spawn on their original point after the predifined time (wherever the mission maker defined this to be, not only at X-Ray!).

Here is how it works: You can spawn at a point being defended by your team ONLY as long as it FULLY belongs to your team. If the enemy has camped it down by only 1%, you can't spawn there anymore. The attacking team can only spawn there once it has fully decamped the point and then recamped to a full 100%. So, for most of the time, no team can spawn at the frontline. This is actually very clever as it balances quite nicely and encourages teamplay - in order to cap a point, coordinated attack is required. You can't cap a point Rambo-style. Spawn camping is virtually non-existent - and if so, we are talking about sniping. You have THAT problem with any game mode that includes forward spawn points I guess, but AAS provides for this by a rule-set based spawn armor (3 seconds of invincibility on ArmAcalypse, up to 10 in other rulesets). This gives you enough time to seek for cover when you are spawning in a hot zone.

They are now class based, but you can change it (this and more is rule-set based, and there are different rule-sets to choose from like public, classic, AWG, Hardcore etc). On ArmAcalypse, the ruleset prevents you from carrying both a scoped rifle or machine gun AND any launcher. Also, there is spawn protection, hence my question to galhozar :) A lot of good things have happened with AAS until its 1.0 release - it sounds like you have not checked since V0.4 or so ?
-
Hey galzohar, I hope you don't want to imply that "spawn camping" is a central feature of AAS - have you played it recently? :bounce3: qwertz

You need a new GFX, CPU is ok. I would go with ATI, ideally HD5850 or above. Oh wait - is this a laptop? If so, you are out of luck unfortunately.

It depends - Intel has announced that they will release a storage driver that enables TRIM on raided drives soon (for Intel chipsets, that is). For normal use, the Intel drives have shown to be very stable performance wise even without TRIM, just using the firmwares automatic garbage collection. And yes, 2xG2 Raid0 will be noticeable faster.
-
Go with the x25. For 90% of real life applications (incl. loading games), sustained write bandwidth is irrelevant. The most important is random read, followed by random write, both with rather small file sizes. The Intel G2 rocks in this regard. For around $400, you can also buy two G2 80GB and do a RAID0, that doubles the sustained speed and also has a positive effect on IPOS.

ID Bans are ineffective. There are hacks that even bypass Battleye that let people change their ID on the fly, and the real troublemakers are using these. The only (halfway) effective countermeasure is IP ban with Battleye.

Serious? Still looking for the [sarkasm] tags...

Windows, dependent upon version, uses between 150 and 300 MB (see: http://blogs.zdnet.com/Bott/?p=672) If (and only if) Windows finds more ressources than it currently needs, it puts it to good use by caching files, running background tasks etc. You are on the very safe side if you leave a GB for Windows while gaming. With ArmA 2 rarely ever using >1GB RAM, you will never see Windows + ArmA requiring more than 2GB of RAM.
-
You can use 3-4GB of your 6 for the RAMdisk and leave 2GB for Win/Arma. I am using 9.5 out odf 12GB for RAMdisk.

The "Official" Advance and Secure Thread (AAS)
qwertz replied to BCA Cat Toaster's topic in ARMA 2 & OA - ADDONS & MODS: COMPLETE
Thats awesome news - can't wait for the final release! Its funny that many people complain about the missing PvP gameplay in ArmA while at the same time there is a jewel like the AAS pack. I can just invite everyone to try it out - it has everything (and more) that a good, tactical PvP mode needs, and (in my humble opinion) is so much more fun and challenging than fighting against largely mindless AI. Keep up the great work ! -
Sure - I would be happy to welcome you on the ArmAcalypse server. PvP only, Advance and Secure (AAS) gameplay, plain vanilla Arma 2 with no mods required (but a number of mods allowed, check our forums). The server populates in the evening hours (US Eastern time) through the night/early morning. Typically we have between 16 and 40 players online, with Fri/Sat being the strongest days. qwertz:bounce3:

How can I display a server message to all players ?
qwertz posted a topic in ARMA 2 & OA : MISSIONS - Editing & Scripting
As in the title - is there a way to display a chat message to all connected players on a public server every 5 minutes or so ? Thanks, qwertz -

How can I display a server message to all players ?
qwertz replied to qwertz's topic in ARMA 2 & OA : MISSIONS - Editing & Scripting
Thanks so far, however, thats not exactly what I am looking for. I know about the motd[] command and use it for the welcome message on the server. What I mean is a server-side command that can ideally be scripted, i.e. "on [Event] display [Message]". Events could be joining, every x minutes, map change, team killing, leaving and so on and so on .... If there is no general way to do that, is there a way to display a message on every map change? Can I put a command in the init.sqf of every mission ? If so, what would be the syntax ? Thanks ! -
How can I display a server message to all players ?
qwertz replied to qwertz's topic in ARMA 2 & OA : MISSIONS - Editing & Scripting
Thanks Deadfast - I use that already, however, this would only display once. I am looking for a way to display messages repeatedly (or even dynamically, i.e. skript based) ? -
As in the title, I have accidentally deleted my work in progress folder. I can however still play the (unfinished) mission, as the "continue.ArmA2Save" file in the "/user/saved/mpmissions/[mapname]/" folder is still there. Is there a way to convert this Arma2Save file back into a PBO or any other way to salvage my project ?

There are hacks where people are flatting all trees and buildings on the island, atillery hacks, people spawning vehicles that are not part of the maps and all kinds of stuff. We've seen them all.
