I too have been having crashes to desktop (since I've installed 1.03) every 30min or so... however I just restart the game and persevere because what choice do we have... it will be weeks/months before a fix comes out - assuming 1.04 fixes the CTD problem at all.
Talk about a buggy piece of shit, I can't believe BIS release a game that is sooo untested... I have nearly uninstalled this game numerous times... the only reason I don't is because there isn't a better Military Sim game out there... YET!
-
I currently have vista (32) installed but previously tried Windows 7 (64) and found absolutely no difference in performance...
-
Thanks for the tip - what i did to fix this problem was, restart my PC and delete everything in the following (Vista32) folders:
C:\Users\[username]\AppData\Local\ArmA2\MPMissionsCache
C:\Users\[username]\AppData\Local\ArmA2\players
C:\Users\[username]\AppData\Local\ArmA2\squads
A simple restart might fix the problem without deleting files - but I thought I'd clean up some crap as well...
So i'm working again... but I'm still not impressed with all the 'maintenance' this game requires to keep it stable. BIS have a lot to deliver in the next patch.

I have just had this problem start happenig as well - I have had enough of all the fixes and tweaks we have to go through to get this game to work...
I brought the game from a retail store here is AUS only a week and a half ago. I think I'll be putting the game up for sale on eBay in the next few days.

Happy to say I got mine from EB today! Now i've just gotta optimise my system so it plays OK :)

The leaked cat 9.7 driver has made absolutely no difference to my game performance - I still cannot get crossfire to work. I have tried Windows7 64bit and have now re-installed Vista 32bit... no improvement, both still give identical FPS, regardless of whether I have crossfire turned on or not. I guess I will try WinXP next.

How many months do we have to wait before we can fully utilise our graphics cards? This is now beginning to piss me off!

crossfire works if you add -winxp switch to the command line of desktop iconThanks for the tip - but I have tried this along with renaming the exe, and i get no performance difference at all (still ~27FPS). I also get this same FPS if I have only one card in the system.
Guess i'll just have to wait patiently for patches. :(

I have 2 x 4890 (although Crossfire is not working... yet) and I get OK performance. My in game settings:
Quality Preference: Very High
Visibility: 3600
Resolution: 1920x1200
3D Resolution: 100%
Texture: Very High
Video Memory: Very High
An. Filtering: Normal
An. Aliasing: Normal
Terrain: Very High
Object: Very High
Shadow: Very High
Post processing: Disabled
Ratio: 16:10
Results: averaging 27 FPS (demo benchmark)
The rest of my hardware is mentioned in my sig. Although I am now testing Windows7 (64bit) but have found absolutely no difference in gaming performance over Vista (32bit).
Naturally turning some settings down a bit means more frames per second - but I like it to look pretty... I'm still searching for that 'happy medium'.
I'm really hoping ATI get some 'optimised' drivers out for this game soon so I can use my second GPU.

EB Games in Australia have just changed their website to show the new release date (16th July):
http://www.ebgames.com.au/pc/product.cfm?id=14822&refer=productsearch
Lets hope they have ordered enough copies so those of us who have pre-ordered will actually get a copy. :)
-
Well EB are supposed to be getting the game on their shelves on the 16th July... although their website still states the 20th August - dunno
Gameplanet have a release date of 16th July:
http://www.gpstore.com.au/Games/1565884.html
JB Hi Fi have a release date of 16th July:
http://www.jbhifionline.com.au/Product/443387/ARMA_II
So I'm hoping this is fact. Guess we won't know for sure for another 10 days.

Just to clarify, "Right Turn" and "Left Turn" are weird hybrid control that try to make one joystick axis do what should take two joystick axes by switching from yaw authority to bank authority based on speed. Thanks Frederf - you have just explained what i have been experiencing - I have been playing the ARMA2 demo version (with no real instruction manual to speak of) so I had no idea that the Right Turn / Left Turn controls are actually combining turning and banking (once over a certain speed)!
Can't wait to get home and give it a try.
Cheers

I'd like to add another voice of discontent with ArmA 2's release & publishing. It's all nice and well to say it has been released on a specific date, but all the stores selling physical copies in Australia say the game won't be available until August 20th. 505 games don't answer emails on the topic.I would buy the game from overseas, but I have placed an order locally two months ago and don't want to buy the game twice.
Hi ceeeb,
After hearing about the release date being brought forward, I enquired with EB Games whether they had heard about release date changes and this is the reply I got this morning:
"...Thank you for your email. We received the information on Monday that the release for Arma 2 has been brought forward which is excellent news! We are in the process of changing this on the website.
Thanks,

Also, Gameplanet Store (www.gpstore.com.au) have now changed the release date to 16th July... Hope this makes the next two weeks bearable

More Crashes to Desktop in DEMO multiplayer... this time I was trying to use Ventrilo and I couldn't stay in a server for more than 2 minutes. As soon as I closed Ventrilo, the CTD stopped.

Hi All... Big News!!!
Got this reply email from All Interactive (the Australian Publisher/Distributor) this morning:
Extract from my email to AI:
"...I have pre-ordered the game from EB Games and have noticed they have moved their expected release date from the 9th of July out to the 20th August. Naturally I am wondering why"
Reply:
"Thanks for your email. It is a frustrating situation and has to do with supply and the retailer's financial quarters. The good news is that we have now managed to bring the release date forward to the 16th of July.
Kind Regards,
Robert Kingston

Gotta say I'm loving this game... can't wait for the full version!
Although I have had numerous CTD using the demo... and I can't get my Graphics cards to work in crossfire (none of the suggested work arounds have worked for me :() - hope ATI come out with a hot fix soon.

It's not just MP... I just thought I'd do a bit of testing and jumped into the editor and set all my video options to MAX (including 10000 view distance) and I've gotta say the draw distance is crap... grass completely dissapears at less than 100m. As we all know this make sniping a little more challenging.
Is this a game engine limitation?
