You are correct and I never disputed each companies unique role. When I made the post it was more about the feuding between certain members from each games community. It was almost like you had to choose between the two. Then I was informed that it was because of the past business history that these people were angry. My opinion on those business dealings and it is just an opinion, Operation Flashpoint is a name. A name that was sold, not stolen or given away.
A good example of this is The Geo brand of cars from the 1990's. Geo models were manufactured by GM in joint-ventures with Japanese import manufacturers. The Prizm was produced at the GM/Toyota joint-venture NUMMI assembly plant in Fremont, California, and the Metro and Tracker were produced at the GM/Suzuki joint-venture CAMI assembly plant in Ingersoll, Ontario. The exceptions, the Spectrum and Storm, were entirely manufactured by Isuzu in Japan. Geo Metro convertibles were built by Suzuki in Japan.
After the brand had been accepted by the public some years later, GM bought sole rights to vehicles and their names. The vehicles became part of the Chevrolet lineup, while keeping the same names (prism, tracker, etc). It was a business decision like the one between BIS and CM. I hope that makes sense, I really didn't intend to discuss business.
I was just hoping that the two communities could show the other the respect they deserve. We are all part of the tactical shooter community, and we should support one another. There are some great ideas from both communities.

Sorry for the typos and stuff, I sent the post from my cell. ;)

It was not meant to be a pissing match, I think if you look back you will find one of your own pushed that button. ;)
OFPDR looks to be shaping up and looks to be a decent game. Both games look to be realistic as far as soldiers movements, weapon ballistics etc. I think ARMA2 will have the upper hand in overall realism. When people first read that they sometimes think, "that's the one for me" but be sure that is what you want. With the military realism of ARMA comes a steeper learning curve for those that have no military background or knowledge. That is not to say it cannot be learned easily, just be aware it may take sometime to bcome accustomed to the various controls and commands.
Both games are and will be enjoyable I am sure. When it comes down to it, it is a matter of preference. I say you play both as it will be some time before OFP2 is released.

Have you actually read up on the history and making of Flashpoint or are you just guesspeculating? Because if you knew the history you'll know Flashpoint was signed to a publisher and virtually complete before the publisher was bought out by another, Flashpoint dropped, then Codemasters stepped in to pick up a virtually complete title for publication. Are you aware that doesn't matter? The fact is the did not do it alone, it doesn't matter how small the role may seem to you, CM still played a role in the games release. Like I mentioned before it does not matter to me one way or the other who makes it or what the name of the game is, you can name it Fluffy Bunny Killers for all I care.
And no I am not a historian on OFP. However I do know it was a collaborative effort between several companies and not by one company alone. I know business and how it works. I work for one of the largest corporations in the world, but I am well aware that we could be bought and paid for tomorrow, and the product we worked to develop and perfect could be sold as theirs. That is business my friend, like it or not.
But you should really ask yourself, would OFP had been released if EA Or the likes had bought the rights to the game? Who knows? Like I said it does not matter. A name is no more than that. I bought Arma 2 for no other reason than the fact it is a great game, not because it was tied to OFP or BIS.
-
Perhaps "entire" is generous, I'll acquiesce to 99.4% the reason why the original Flashpoint was a great game.A collaboration is not about the size of the role, every part has it's place. The development and sales of a game is no different than an engine. There several parts that have to come together in order to work. OFP was no different, Bohemia did provide the larger portion I am sure but at that time OFP was in the pitch phase, could BIS produced the game alone?
I don't want to draw this out to a long post. The point I wanted to make in this reply is at that time would we have ever had the opportunity to play OFP had CM not been involved? I really don't know, but what I do know is when they released the original, I was happy they did.
In business things change, we don't know why things change. But at the end of the day, CM and BIS are in business to make money, and decisions are made with that in mind.
-
Why does the history between Bohemia and Codemasters even come into this conversation? If you believe that BIS was the entire reason the original OFP was a great game then you more naive than I would have ever imagined for a group of "seasoned gamers' like yourselves.
Now before everyone reaches out to hit the quote or reply button to start flaming me, please hear me out. First off let me say I purchased both iterations of ARMA and I love them both, and I also like most of you played the original OFP for years and years. But the history of two software companies and their relationship with one another is no concern to me, whether it is called OFP 2/3/4/5 or Arma 2/3/4/5 doesn't matter. What matters is that these are two companies still believe there is strong customer base looking for real tactical shooters, and their developers are involved with the community getting feedback from them to hopefully present a product the community will enjoy.
Operation Flashpoint 2 will be a decent game I am sure, it will be a tactical shooter I am sure of that too. Will it be comparable to COD4 or BF2, even the guys on this forum that bash OFP2 know better than that. This feud that has formed this hatred or disdain for the "other" game made by that "other" company pushes them to make ignorant comments like that. The fact that no one on these forums have seen anything other than a 3 minute video of in-game footage, or a trailer for OFP2 is proof enough that none of the comments made should be taken seriously. OFP2 is still a work in progress, and while they have slated it for a fall release, that is likely not to happen. I am sure that this game will be pushed out to a later date. Regardless, when it is released I will buy it as well.
Before you assume I am a CM or OFP2 fanboy, please stop and think about this. We the tactical shooter community are a small few in the fps community that believe that realism is more fun that the mindless, bunny hopping, bottomless pocket fragfest games that the majority of gamers play today. The failure of ARMA or OFP series would directly affect the other, as we are the lone survivors of a genre. The success of ARMA and ARMA 2 will force CM to compete, while the games may not be the same in every aspect does not matter. If they can appeal to the fan base (all of us) then the success of each company will force the other to make a better game. When you have a small niche market or small fan base in comparison you are less likely to get the investments/funding a company needs to develop a game. That is why I think we should stop the ignorant feuding and support the community, not the community of OFP2 or ARMA 2, but the community of realistic tactical shooters.
So with that said, I think both games will something to offer, I don't think either will have all the elements we would all hope for. I think OFP2 will be a good game, will it be better than Arma2? That remains to be seen, I have to see more before I commit. That's just my two cents.

"Q: Is there complete ArmA 2 manual included with STEAM release?
A: Yes, it will be available as PDF download from STEAM."
Is this available or am I just overlooking it somehow? I purchased the game from Steam, I just didn't see a manual available for download.

This is my first post on these forums so let me start off by saying hello. I am retired Army with several years of service, and I used to be an avid played of the original OFP. However, I did not play the first iteration of ARMA. After the release of numerous horrible games that had labeled themselves as tactical shooters (ie COD4 and BF2 and the likes), I stopped playing shooters for some time. I have been watching ARMA 2 and another game (which I am sure you all know-OFP2) closely as these games fall into the category of a real tactical shooters.
I am glad I have found a like minded community that thinks games should not be set to "easy mode", and you should have to work as a team since there is no such thing as an Army of one.
One question I have since the game is not released in the US until tomorrow is, How is you ingame name determined if you have the Steam released version? Some games assign your Steam login name as your ingame name as well. I was just wondering if anyone knew. There are other games that allow you to set your name in the multiplayer setting in the game itself. If someone that beta tested or one of the EU members that have the game already could clarify, I would appreciate it.
Well it is time for work,

What does ARMA 2 have that Operation Flashpoint 2 doesn't?

That is an assumption/opinion. If the game turns out to be good, you don't know what people will do. I am one of the people here that will be the first to say I will buy OFPDR, and if it is as good as ARMA2, I will play them both. But to assume that the other game will not have a following of creative people that can provide mods and addons is jusy speculation on your part.
