** Some suggestions for MP **
- In Server selection - add a favourite Server button / screen. So you can build up a list of your favourite servers. Instead of plouging through a long list, trying to remember what server you played on.
- Friends - Always greyed out? (how do you add friends?) Manual doesnt explain!!
- Player search.. so you can see where your buddies are playing and join them on that server.
- Expand or allow scrollable player field - when highlighting a server in the server browser, you can see the players, but their names get truncated on the right hand side of the table, how about text wrap or scroll field? so you can see whos playing.

Update - I ran a memtest86+ v2.11 soak overnight (9+ hours) - NO Errors reported - 2GB Memory 100% OK..
** So my final thoughts on the matter is that it's the game that doing it.. or else if it was my memory I'd be seeing other wierd stuff on my other games (which probably thrash my system in CPU, GPU & memory terms also but they are more stable).. It's Arma2 issue - it's a pile of junk at the moment!!!!! (well for MP as I've not really got into SP)..
** Like any software it's going to be buggy.. and I have to accept that.. I just hope BI get round to fixing it as it kinda spoils the overall experience.. especially whensome co-ops take a few hours to complete and with the damn ranking system, if youre kicked out, you get busted back to Private.
I'd Like to thank forum members for the help the have provided me (esp. Private Plowjoy)..

Well after setting pagefile to 4gb and launching arma2 again - I managed to get approx 1.5 - 2 hrs (yay!) out of the game before a CTD.

** I think (working my way through your suggestions_ it looking more likely arma2 is crashing out after running a certain time.. (1 1.5 hrs) - due to I guess a memory leak or the game software trying to access memory already allocated??

** No HD errors - I dont think it's that - I still think its Arma2 doing bad stuff in memory -
Googling "arma Exception code: C0000005 ACCESS_VIOLATION" - throws up quite a number of hits - seems to stretch back to OPF days, but in this case insted of the GFX crashing (as seen in a lot of posts), its arma2 as the faulting appliacation.
If BI are reading any of this - some input from you guys would be helpful - I dont want to end up chasing my tail with plowjoy if it turns out to be an issue with arma2.exe :)

Yep - the MP file was different in each case..
It could have been flukey that arma2 CTD within minutes..
Good idea though on the page file - should be memory + 1/2 memory in total (I believe).. Current pagefile 1536.. :o - But I'll make it 4gb.. see what happens..
After all this - could be issues with my CPU or Mobo - after all it's an old machine - but in saying this Ive not had any grief with other recent games I'm currently playing - like Prototype, Spore Galactic Adv, Fallout 3 etc.. (Fairly recent and no issues)..

Cant be the old RAM - I've installed a complete new set of DDR Ram. (2 x 1GB). I used to have 2 x 512MB DDR RAM (thats been taken out).
** Ive checked the Asus user's guide as to which slot I installed the RAM to - I recall that they do have to go into the correct slot - but then again - would XP boot up if they were in the incorrect slot?
I'm running on a Asus K8V Delux SE mobo. It's got 3 DDR memry slots and I've populated the first two slots (each slot 1GB ram).
DIMM slot guide says:
Number of DIMMS DIMM1 DIMM 2 DIMM3 MAX Speed
2 DoubleSide DoubleSide n/a DDR 400
I've actually got them installed in this fashion so I dont think it's the DIMMS.
I genuinely think it's the game that has issues and now not my RAM.

Okies..
I went out today and got myself 2 x 1GB memory sticks - installed in PC (no issues there) - launched ARMA2 - joined a MP game - and within a few minutes got a CTD. (Detailed Below)

Well to be sure I'll need to memtest my new memory - depends how this checks out - could be looking at other possibilities??
- Mobo issue?
- OS (XP) issue?
- Driver Issue?
- Conflicting (loaded) software?
- Issue with the server I'm connecting to (1PARA...) as I always get a good game on that server..
Wierd thing is, I never got CTD's when I had the 'Receiving' issue - usually pressing 'M' 9 times out of 10 I'd get back in game.. After lowering my Video Ram settings - I found I could play for longer (with the message) but now CTDs.
Tonight ARMA2 didnt stay up long...
On the plus side - sticking 2GB in my PC has made a noticable difference to the OS speed.. :) (yay).. it needed it anyway... 1Gb just doesnt cut it nowerdays..
If this is an Application issue (from what other people are posting) - then I'll just have to grun and bear it whilst BI (attempt) to fix it. (Fingers X).

Oh dear. In that case it's possible that you might have a dodgy stick of RAM and when Arma2 attempts to write to an address the RAM is returning an error.Try running some memory tests.
Cheers Plowjoy.. will try memtest95 (or similar) - something that'll thrash memory..
Another crash .. :(

Hi Plowjoy - thanks for the info..
Here's an update - Left myself logged into ARMA2 (ingame) and then went and had something to eat - 5 mins max - came back to PC and found that ARMA2 had CTD again.. Keep getting these "Exception code: C0000005 ACCESS_VIOLATION" Errors.
I'm running XP/SP2 with 1GB ram - (I know I should have more) - it's an old system (AMD 64Athlon 3Ghz) and a GF 7800 GS / 512MB ram - Running game in 1024x768 All settings normal.. (not high)..

** Wierd thing is that afetr someone told me how to fix the constant receiving message - (i.e turn video buffer? sor something like that, to Low)..
Now that I can play the game (for more than an hour) - its now doing these CTDs
Any additional help appreciated..

Ever since I managed to sort out the 'Receiving' Bug - (by making video texture to low in adv. video settings) - I could actually now play a game withough getting that damn message on my screen at the most inopportune moments.
So now I'm playing ARMA 2 for about 1-2 hrs before it does something else stupid - Like CTD (Crash to Desktop)- My opinion at the moment - MP ARMA2 is too unstable.. No idea if SP does this CTD as I'm concentraing on MP at the moment.
Here's the error:
Event Type: Error
Event Source: Application Error
Event Category: None
Event ID: 1000

Had this a number of times - even after a reboot..
If BI are reading this - any ideas why MP is soo unstable (well for me anyway) and why I keep getting these CTDs?
** Im going to try the DirextX9 / Creative Drivers fix and see if I get more stability first..
IMHO - It's making the game unplayable.. it's putting me off this game.. and making me wish 'OPF2 - Dragon Rising' was available right now (as much as I hate to say it - as I've played this game and every iteration since OPF)

Yesterday I tried some other voodoo, I de-fragmented my drive. It has 100G, 45G used, it said 54% fragmented, after that 4%, but ArmA 2 behaves EXACTLY the same way after this.Next voodoo: beheading a goat, pulling goat-head over mine and dancing naked around my rig.
I will let you know if it helped.
Note: if you're going to do this - do it with the curtains closed... or else your neighbours will be calling in some ARMA on you courtesy of your local Army/SWAT Team/Armed Police Force/Guys In Yellow van with flashing blue light carrying straightjackets (Delete where appliacble).. ;) :D:D

Hmmm at one point I thought this 'Receiving' error (for want of a better word).. was down to my ancient PC / Graphics Card, but now I'm not too sure.. as I'm seeing reports from other players experiencing the same issues and they all have different hardware setups..
The most common thing which keeps cropping up is:
Error: Failed to create surface texture (\Path_to_problematic_texture_here)
*** Device reset recovery requested
Why is this occuring? It's a common complaint across all spectrums of hardware..
- Is this down to the game engine having issues with the textures? Is it issues with the textures themselves? Is it the way the game engine accesses and uses these textures? or are they missing from the distribution? Is it an issue with your graphic card VRAM? (or whereever the textures are stored for access)?
What leads me to believe that the graphis engine is problematic is that pressing (M) for map - (I'm making assumptions here on what I see on screen) takes you from a 3D game engine to a 2D (map representation)?? and when pressing (M) to get back to the game environment, sometimes the 'Receiving' goes away and you're then presented with the 3D world again.. Which again leads me to believe the game engine is having a hard time accessing and using these textures (for whatever reason) in the 3D environment...
I'd like to see BI/Development explain in detail if necessary why so many people are getting this error. And fix it as it's spoiling our game experience.. (of what could be a really excellent game)..
Also while I remember & forgetting the minimum / recommended system specs on the box.. It would be nice for BI to let us players know what was their PC/Graphics setup inhouse.. what did they have in the way of hardware to give them an excellent game experience?? (even maxed settings)..
Thats all I'd like to know... even if to get that "game experience" you need the dogs bo**ox hardware setup - then at least you know (one way or another) what you need to set and exceed your expectations of the game/software...

Here's a good suggestion - on MP - allow you to add favourites - a number of times I've played on a good server - (no lag / crash) for once.. with good team players.. logged off and next day - couldn't remember what server I'd played on..
** So I say in the MP server list - add a favourites (and also filter by favourites).

Frag's right, even my awesome machine has a little struggles here and there. No offense but the GeForce 7XXX series are starting to become obsolete.
Agreed.. my pc's getting 'long in the tooth' so to speak.. but like you said and what Ive read in these forums - even high spec machines are having a hard time copeing with ARMAII maxed out (so to speak)..
Well thanks for the input.. much appreciated..

Im getting no end of problems playing MP - And I'd like to know if I can expect half decent gameplay from my (old) Rig.
graphics: D3D9, Device: NVIDIA GeForce 7800 GS ,(521MB VRAM), Driver:nv4_disp.dll 6.14.11.8585 - resolution: 1024x768x32
Windows XP Pro - SP3, 1Gb RAM.
In game I keep getting: (Receiving..) after 15-30 mins of gameplay.. I even tried going to map (M) and back to game - It seemed to have limited success, but now even that doesnt get me out of the (receiving) screen.

That means 59 mb.

goto map. leave map.job done.
Yeah - tried that and nothing happened - (M key isnt it?) - I could hear plenty.. but just saw the message on the screen (blinking)..
At one point I was trying to flank some ofthe enemy on a map (high up in the hills) nothing much around me and then I got the Recieve message and then within 30 seconds it went and I could then carry on..

by default installation and starting ArmA without extra switches....http://community.bistudio.com/wiki/-profiles
....telling it to store it elsewhere it usually goes to C:\Documents and Settings\<user>.............lill deeper but it is there for sure.
Many thanks.. now found where it lives :)..
Note to BI Development - I keep getting "Recieveing" during MP... The following is from my arma2.rpt file.. Ive dropped my textures & screen res to 1024x768 after reading elsewhere it helps to drop resolution and 3d? textures.

Where does ArmA2.rpt reside? Ive had multiple flashing 'Recieve' screens now and I've had to kill off the arma2.exe process. Had a look on my hard disks and not been able to find this ArmA2.rpt file.

Hmmm.. tried 2 games and after a few minues Im getting the 'Recieving' crap message again.. BI why dont you let the game CTD.?? its a pain trying to alt tab and then try and kill off the arma process.
Processtracker showed a peak mem usage of 1,562,108k (about 1.5GB) an now it's settlrd down to approx 584k mem usage.

Lima-14 - The problem been is how long do they need? They have had as far back as Ofp and Arma 1 to get the netcode right. I really never thought a game in this day and age could play so bad online.Well I've just patches to 1.20 - let's see if some things have improved.. :)
BTW - Did you ever play B.R.E.E.D ?? omg that netcode, well the whole game didn't play correctly.. atrocious AI pathing, extremely buggy netcode.. (at best I think I only ever saw 2-3 servers up and running) - the game looked promising but fell flat on it's face.. (That games was 100 time worse then ARMA/OPF etc..) lol...

I don't know if it's just me but the interface / UI leaves a lot to be considered when playing online.. apart from the lag, and the off 'recieveing' messages where I can hear but not see anything (apart from the recieveing message).. but the UI just confuses me.... Ive worked out that you can select a (AI) soldier slot and then click (ok?) I cant remember..
But when seeing the mission load, then get presented with the selection screen again, then another load screen.. it leaves me wondering if Ive actually joined a multiplayer game.. eventually the map / scenario loads..
It's the the non-fluid/ non-flowing aspect of joining a MP game could be improved.. just puts me off....
There are plenty of games (MP) when you're in a lobby, you select what you want to be and then join the game.. no screen flashing backwards and forwards etc.. no worries...
I've played OPF, ARMA I and now ARMA II - and tbh - Ive always thought the netcode could have been better - 10/10 for the game but 5/10 for the netcode / MP aspect.. it really needs tightening up (and patching)..
Here's hopeing development (BI) are on the ball this time and I agee with UsesTactics - am also behind BI on their ambitious vision for desktop warfare and I'm hopeing that ArmA2 can achieve it's full potential.
And I also hope that in the not too distant future something can be done to help gamers enjoy BI's well deserved efforts.
Regards
Lima-14.

Great game - (if I could experience it long enough without these damn CTD's in multiplayer) - just let down at the moment by frequest crashes..
