This has been a thing for ArmA/OFP forever. Vast majority generally stick to MP.

If you're relying on the BISim forums for direct Q&A support then you may end up waiting for awhile. The *priority* level for Support really exists as such, 1) Walk-in 2) Phone 3) Email 4) Forums As well PE users are a bit lower on the totem pole when it comes to priority responses. Not that PE users don't matter but the fact is PE users don't pay for support so much of Support's time is spent with paying customers who purchase Gold/Silver hours. If you want a quicker response then I suggest emailing them, you'll definitely get a response much quicker that way. If you haven't received a response yet or seen documentation then it's because they are still working on it. In a perfect world you'll see documentation released before product but that usually is never the case with new flashy things that are developed and in demand. Many thing are still undocumented with VBS but they will eventually get to them all in due time, it's just a lot to cover and despite what most people think there isn't 500 BI people running around. Give them time and they'll get to it :)

Unless you're a university or some sort of funded R&D agency, Academic won't be available to you. As stated above, you'd be purchasing a PE (Personal Edition) license of VBS2, not Academic. Personal Edition is available to anyone located within a white listed country that pays the listed fee for the license. The PE license is restricted for personal use only by EULA and cannot be used for any form of commercial work. Payment is made in whatever currency is listed on the quote you receive from Sales. This will typically be localized. PE orders are shipped as soon as payment is made and the invoice is sent over to my department, Support. As soon as we receive the invoice we'll package everything up and drop it in the mail. You will not be able to use VBS2 until the package arrives with the encryption dongle that contains your license. The dongle must be inserted in your PC in order for VBS2 to run. In short, no. Some things can be carried over but in most cases you will need to repack addons, change file paths, etc. Also, be sure to check the EULA's and/or author licenses to ensure you have permission before attempting to port. PE editions lack content available to commercial and enterprise customers. The primary differences are within the EULA, where as PE editions are not authorized to create content for commercial purposes (ie: selling or paid development). No worries :)

A early stage of this was done in VBS2 around 2009 using a 3rd party mod "Acceler8ion". The method was to use "Acceler8ion" to export Landbuilder files and then import them into Visitor later, dividing up the work between others to later compile in a single Visitor project. The LBT function was later added to VBS2 out of the box so that mostly left "Acceler8ion" out of the loop. This, however, did not solve the real-time dillema which is party where VBS2 is able to solve in newer versions which feature the terrain editing tools inside the editor. So, changes can be made to a single scenario in both real-time or offline modes and then saved into a new scenario which retains the changes done to the terrain. Keeping in mind this is VBS functionality, doesn't really mean it's impossible to mod into ArmA somehow via a community mod. Just an example, food for thought. There's some bright individuals in the community that could probably make this happen.

You're spot on. All things aside, the military (in general) wants to rapidly create and conduct training. I've used both tool sets, BI and Cry, and I can tell you that I spent far less time creating a full A-Z real world location in VBS2 then I have in CE3. CryEngine3 Dev Kit is nice, the engine is nice, graphics are nice, BUT it's not nearly as drag/drop as it's advertised to be. You're never going to see CryEngine3 Dev Kit sitting at a battle sim center or simulation support center where prior military contractors are developing content to conduct training, period. What you will see, now (because I have been there and done that), is prior military contractors sitting at their battle sim centers and sim support centers developing content with the VBS2 Developer Suite to use in training. CryEngine3 Dev Kit doesn't work well with GIS data. Out of the box it only supports .raw elevation data and good luck importing converted GIS to .raw data. Fidelity is all about time. Typically a training audience could care less about what something looks like, given that the functionality is there and working. Does a squad leader need to see a mirror image of a real life HMMWV blown up by an IED in order to make a tactical decision? No. I'm not saying there's no place for CE3 fidelity, because there will always be a demand for something new a shiny, but to think that sim centers are going to be the ones expected to do the development is crazy. Units want "here and now" not "see ya in 10 months" once you figure it out. RTV is great but I've been to the last 2 I/ITSEC shows and seen their booth, no one's interested. Videos only work for so long when you have hardly any content to backup your product. Just my 2 cents after working at a sim center for 2 1/2 years for the USMC :)

The purchase of a PE license for VBS2 is essentially that. You will get free updates for life, upgrades to newer versions (VBS3, etc) will be on a case by case basis once things progress to that point in time. Not sure I follow on this one, as in what kind of hardware? There's no additional requirement to run VBS2 other then a PC that meets the system specs. In most cases if your system can handle ArmA2 then you're ok. Same as any other game, just install it :) The added part is the encryption key which must be plugged into the machine at all times for it to run the software, including the Developer Suite (Tools). Same as ArmA2 minus the GameSpy Arcade lobby. Uses direct IP (remote) server connections and can also communicate over LVC with DIS/HLA (military sim network stuff). If you purchase/own a PE license then it's yours to use as you see fit for non-commercial use under the EULA. They can purchase their own copies and link up with you just fine. We have a entire community of PE users that do this from time to time. Sample and tutorial content comes with the software but it's not really the main focus of it, the idea is you make your own. Some folks post scenarios on the VBS forums for other PE users to download. Typically our trial copy is only for commerical users who are interested in purchasing a license, however you can email sales ( sales@bisimulations.com ) and request a copy, never hurts to ask. There's a lot of debate in the sim world over who's the best but really there's no one else out there who can compete with the amount of content and functionality that we offer.

Correct The price covers our cost for the hardware and shipping. The dongles are not cheap and in most cases we never see them again so we have to charge to at least cover that. The software for eval is free though. Some of those dongles can cost as much as $100-$200 depending on how many seats they can hold.

I was actually thinking the same thing. For the years I've done exercise planning and 'real' military training events with VBS2 before working for BI, I couldn't imagine having to use the klunky old editor that doesn't even allow for the use of layers, overlays, 3D camera, etc. I understand people get used to a specific way of doing things but the old editor is just evil in comparison to the VBS2 editor (OME/RTE). And I'm not just saying this because I work for BI, I would have said the same thing had you asked me years ago when I was a contractor for the Marine Corps or when I was using VBS2 on active duty. I started with VBS1 back in the day after playing OFP in '01 and can't imagine rolling back the clock to do scenario design like that ever again. Everything had it's purpose then, technology has progressed since. As for everyone who's seeing bugs, please be sure to post them on the BISim forums but primarily send them over to use on support@bisimulations.com so we can address them and get them fixed.

Can you PM me your info

Well don't get me wrong, I did the same thing while contracting on the Marine Corps side. I made videos, interactive Flash training tools (I'm a Flash developer by trade), scenarios, etc. but they surely were not for free because the government is paying the salary of the person/s making them. It's not really much different then the government seeking out to contract someone or a company to do work for them, either way the hours invested are paid for. TBOC is a great place, I followed a lot of the work back when it was JTCOIC. I was also happy to see the Ganjgal Valley AAR used for the MOH presentation not long ago. All things aside, TBOIC is a good place to have a job but I'm more then happy to be out of contracting and in a secure job. Past 3 to nearly 4 years I've spent listening to government cut backs, budget cuts, essential positions and non-essential positions 'just incase' somone has to be let go. It's nice to not have to deal with that anymore but I do miss it since I happened to work not far from where I spent most of my active duty time. Left a lot of friends and memories back there. I wouldn't tell people to not work for TBOC, it's a great place to get started in the industry and with the product and also for SME's to keep current. Well I can't predict the future but I wouldn't say that's never going to happen. The company overall has grown a lot over the years, not like it used to be 10 years or so ago when it was run out of a storage shed in someone's back yard in AU, lol. But really, Florida isn't THAT bad. I moved here after living in North Carolina for the past 12 years, wouldn't trade it for anything. Economy is cheaper, taxes are lower and in some cases non-existent and best of all houses are cheap as hell. I shopped around for houses over the course of 6 months and just couldn't believe how easy it is to get something here for practically nothing, and nice houses too. 4-5 bedroom, even looked at a 7 bedroom and all of them were about the price of a 3 bedroom 2 bath in NC. Lots of bank owned homes up for grabs here. But you guys drive on the wrong side of the road :p Actually I've owned a number of right hand drive cars over the past 8 years, 3 1/2 of which was living in Japan :)

Why not just apply for BISim? :) Government contracting can be a tough realm to get into without certs backing you the entire way. Competition for seats is a annual thing when defense cuts come into play (which is happening right now with the downsize of the military). One of the reasons I decided to move over from USMC contracting to BISim. In all honesty though, you of all people have been around for while. BI is pretty well known for picking people up who are able to effectively demonstrate their skills regardless if they went to school "X" or have degree "Y". I'll be the first to say that I'm more interested in someone's ability to do the work rather then if they have a paper saying they know something. I'd much rather have a motivated jack of all trades guru on my team than someone who 'might' be able to do the work after extensive OJT. Seeing as there is no school for VBS2 and all, experience goes a long way ;)

Today we've opened up a PE users section on the BISim forums. Those of you who recently purchased (as well as previous PE users) are welcome to jump on the forums under this new section where you can probably coordinate with other users much easier then this thread. https://forums.bisimulations.com/viewforum.php?f=118 To view this section you'll need to be logged in. If you have not done so already make sure you sign up on the forums and provide 'us' with as much information as possible so we can approve your account (invoice number, name, contact info, etc). If you have a forum account already and are unable to access this section please send a email over to support@bisimulations.com and we'll get you taken care of. Well there's a lot of positive points that comes with purchasing support in addition to a license seat. Most importantly you get priority support from us where as your standard license holder who has no support would get limited or no assistance (depending on the situation of course). Basic to advanced questions for content development or general software troubleshooting are often the most common things that people ping us for. Now that's not to say that if you contact us that we'll simply ignore you if you have no support but at a certain point we'll have to swing the topic to purchasing a support plan to continue a discussion that's going down the techie rabbit hole. With that said, in most cases a support plan isn't needed for PE users.

To qualify for the 50% you can simply use the following: http://products.bisimulations.com/contact-us?select=license • in "Reason for Contact" select "Licence" • in the ‘Comment’ box quote BISim11 with either PE or Commercial Licence.
