Personally, I use the gunner seat and take controls (Scroll menu.. it's there unless someone enters the chopper with you)... It's easier to solo if you're from the gunner because then you get the scope too.As for "I can't lock onto targets", you need to hold right click pretty much right on top of them from the cockpit view. If they're picking up on the radar, you can hit TAB and generally pick them up.
So to answer you, no... I don't have that issue.
Ok that works for me too, thanks for telling this.
That's weird..
A. you have to press T instead of G which you normally have to press.
and B. you must aim almost directly at the target (when you are a gunner with a pilot you can look faaar away from the target and it will still atleast mark the target).
That doesn't make any sense.. that sounds like balancing in the game (the devs don't want players to effectively kill enemies when flying attack heli alone) and this game shouldn't contain such stuff.
Another thing which smells like balancing is that you can't use countermeasures.
Sit out at 2-3km from target at high alt and use the DAGR HE-AT missiles to disable all enemy armor and technicals.Dont need the countermeasures for that tactic.
Better to sit out at 3km and pepper targets with DAGR, then go home to re-arm.
Don't know how that would be possible when you have to aim exactly at the vehicle until you can lock on it, that would be very, very hard from 2-3 km away, but on the other hand i yet haven't tested that alone, i will try that and report back.

I've never tried to fly any of the attack helis from the gunners seat, do they even have flight controls? *Side note* I know the Apache has flight controls in both cockpits and the gunner is considered a weapons officer and a co-pilot. The Blackfoot aka Comanche gunner does not have flight controls, I had to check a YouTube vid (I'm @ work). Just checked the Kajman as well, the gunner does not have flight controls...So there you go, that's why you can't "Take controls" when in the gunners seat, because none exist!
You can take controls when in the gunners seat.
You can fly the heli normally from the gunners seat, except that you still can't lock on any targets.
-
For the automatic targeting to work, and using manual fire, you need AI in the gunners seat or a player in the gunners seat (however with a player you wont have an option to manual fire). The only reason I could guess for the reason behind this is because the firing computer is in the gunners seat, hence having a need for a body in the gunners seat.Let me guess, you're a wasteland player?
Ok, but in that case it should work to lock on targets when i'm alone in the heli and in gunners seat with "Take controls" activated?
I wish they would have kept it like it was in A2.
No i hate playing wasteland.
I only play COOP.

Why can't i lock on any hostile vehicles/aircraft when i'm alone in a attack heli and have manual fire on?
It's the same thing if i'm on the gunner seat and have clicked on "Take controls".
But as soon as i'm in gunner seat and there is a pilot i can lock on to everything.
It's like this for everyone else too right?
What is the point in having the manual fire option at all when it doesn't work?

I have only A2 and i can see a few OA servers, i guess there must be more OA servers than that..
Is there OA servers where you can fly with attack chopper?
In A2 there is basically not a single server which has attack choppers easily available, but on a few servers if you are very lucky you can unlock a attack chopper when you do side missions.
-
Well if i ask it this way then: is there many OA servers..?
-
Even if i only have A2 installed and not OA, do i still see all the OA servers? Or will i see a bunch more OA servers once i have installed OA?
Depending on what answer i will get i will have more questions.
-
Do you have the Desert map?No, is that a map for operation arrowhead..?
Well i'm trying to find the "Desert" map but there is 600 different desert maps in arma2 so which one of them is it?
Is it this: http://www.armaholic.com/forums.php?m=posts&q=11466 ?

This script doesn't work, it's stone dead.
I install it as explained but the mission never shows up in the list of missions in the editor.

Well i think there is some more space left for BASIC radio messages..
If not then they could remove some of the 500 less important radio messages.
Another stupid varying radio message is: "I'm under fire", sometimes instead of "Under fire!" it says "Incoming!" like a grenade is incoming, how stupid is that?
-
ArmA 2 have pretty many different radio messages and orders and stuff, like "find cover", "flank right", "wait for me", "scan horizon", etc. you can even order someone to attack animals..
But i miss some in my opinion very basic radio messages (for use in multiplayer), like: "Cover me", "Follow me", and "Go, Go, Go, Move it!".
Why don't we have these radio messages..?
I'm sure some of you will say: "You don't need any radio messages anyway because it's better to talk in TS/ventrilo, but i don't want to talk in TS/ventrilo, period.
And another thing which annoys me is that some of the radio messages vary extremely much.
Let's take "Ready to fire" as an example, sometimes it says "Target in sight" and sometimes "Target acquired", and there is 50 different versions more.
When i want to say "Target in sight" but it says "Target acquired" i'm like: "WTF, no i'm not acquiring any target! I just want to freaking say that i have a hostile in sight!"

It would be sooo easy to make so that everyone in MP can see when you reload.
The animation is already there, the only thing you need is a little command which triggers the animation on the right time.
So why don't they do that..
It's not realistic if you can't freaking see when other soldiers reload their weapons ^^
-
Well me and my friend have been reloading our guns like mad while standing and looking at eachother, and none of us have seen eachother reloading..
So how big is the chance that both our games is bugged..?
Or well maybe the chance is quite big if it is a major bug which many have..
No i haven't reported it.
-
Why don't we have any reload animation AT ALL in multiplayer?
You can't see other people reloading.
I think ALL other FPS/shooter/war games have reload animation both in multiplayer and singleplayer.
BF2, CS, Americas army, DOOM. You name it.
All arcade shooters have reload animation.. but not ArmA 2 which is a SIMULATOR?!
Isn't it kinda weird?
And it would be useful to see when someone is reloading so you can cover him..

I'm tired of AI who have X-ray vision and see through grass.
Where can i download the mod which reduces grass?
I'm sure i have seen a such mod somewhere but i can't find it anymore =(

Hmm ok, i'll maybe buy a X52 =)
lol i don't think it's that smart to wait for the successor to X52, because you don't know how long it will take, it could take many years before they release a successor..
-
Will it improve your flying? Not especially, (the hatswitchs will for looking around if you do not own trackIR) but it will make it more fun? Absolutely.
I have never regreted buying my X52 pro.
I also use it when I play X3 and Il-2. Mostly I use it for ArmA games.
Well i would be glad if i just would be able to steer the jet to where i want lol, and maybe even kill a enemy or two.
-
I think it's absolutely TERRIBLE to fly jets with mouse/keyboard in arma 2, i have not played any other game with such horrible steering. There is really no logic in the steering, it's even hard to turn the jet or fly up/down.
I have Logitech 3D Pro, but it broke, it broke after a couple of months after i bought it. (it steers even when i'm not touching the stick). I'll never again buy Logitech joysticks.
-
Is it worth to buy a joystick for this game? I'm thinking of buying a Saitek X52..
Many people say: "i have a joystick but i don't use it because it works better with keyboard/mouse".
And that you can't make any precise manoeuvers with a joystick, you have to do the big movements with joystick and the small movements with a mouse.
If it is like this i wouldn't give a penny for a joystick.
Kinda weird that the joystick support is so bad in this game.. from what i have read even the arcade game BF2 had much better use of joysticks than this hardcore simulator.

I'm sorry but that would be terrible. This isn't WoW where there can be thousands playing on one server."Oh hey let's travel 225km which can take 10-15 minutes to do, die, and basically not be able to play unless you join another server".
The only thing that would happen is frustrated players just quitting and rejoining to "force" a respawn if the server supports jump-in playing. I don't know if you realized this but maches in ArmA2 usually last hours!
No respawn games make sense if the map/round in which you are playing is small (counter-strike). This is because if you die, the wait isn't going to be astronomically large.
In large games, it's pointless and frustrating because all you'll want to do is just join another game. Not the kind of mission server owners would like to have on their server. Let's not forget the fact that dieing is a punishment in of itself due to the travel times a player has to go through to get to an objective, unless the server is using mobile respawns (and even then there's a signifigant "delay" between the soldier being put back into action).
Yea you are right..
-
That's not the game's fault. That's the mission makers' faults. Mission designers have full freedom and control of how to treat respawn, if having it enabled at all.Good ;P
-
One thing which i don't like with the arma 2 multiplayer is that there is no structure in the gameplay imo, since you always respawn after like 15 seconds after you have died, so after a while there is soldiers (human controlled) scattered all over the map.
Is there a mod or something which does so that you can't respawn after you have died, or that the respawn timer is much longer?
-
I have no problems with locating where the sounds come from, actually i think it works pretty nicely.
Can't lock on any hostile vehicles with attack heli in manual fire mode
in ARMA 3 - GENERAL
Posted
I tried it now..
I had to look directly at the hostile vehicles for it to mark and lock on the target, and it also seemed to mark empty (grey vehicles).
When you are a gunner and there's a pilot you can mark targets (get a square) when you aren't even close to aiming at the target.
So the locking system definitely works differently (worse) when flying alone from the gunners seat.
