Hey there ppl -does anyone know what is the best/fastest cpu i can fit/upgrade to a friends motherboard? It is a:- Gigabyte GA-K8VM800M AMD Socket 754 .
Cheers
ck
Maybe an AMD 3700+. That's a pretty old board. One of the problems with buying CPUs for old socket types (That I encountered when I considered upgrading to a top-of-the-line 939 CPU) is that you end up paying a large premium essentially for the "antique" value of the processor. You can easily end up spending more money on an old CPU than you would if you just got a new mobo with a new CPU.

Alright, I decided I'm gonna get an Ati 5870 graphics card and AMD Phenom X4 processor. What's the best motherboard for this processor?I personally use an MSI 790FX-GD70, though that's on the pricey side and I only got mine because I got a great combo deal on it. It does have some convenient features for overclocking. Personally, I think a Gigabyte MA770T-UD3P is a cheaper, but very well made board and will do everything you need your motherboard to do. If you've got an unlimited budget, then getting a more complex motherboard won't hurt you, but personally I'd get the Gigabyte and spend the extra money elsewhere. I can personally recommend the Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 Pro fan, it's $40 and does a great job keeping the CPU temp down. Also purchase your own thermal paste, you never know just how good or crappy the stuff is that comes pre-applied to the heatsink.

@ ch 123: I'm gonna be posting my gaming PC Parts list right. However, this is not the complete list, so I'm only gonna post the parts I have written now and will the complete list later.Motherboard- EVGA 121-BL-E756-TR LGA 1366 Intel X58 Micro ATX SLI Micro Intel Motherboard-$199.99
CPU- Intel Core i7-950 Bloomfield 3.06GHZ 4x256 KB L2 Cache 8MB L3 Cache LGA 1366 130W Quad-Core Processor-$569.99
Hard Drive- Samsung Spinpoint F1 HD103UJ 1TB 7200 RPM 32MB Cache STA 3.0 GB/S 3.5" Internal Hard Drive-$84.99
Graphics Card- EVGA 512-P3-N871-AR GeForce 9800 GTX 512MB 256-Bit DDR3 PCI Express 2.0x16 HDCP Ready SLI Support Video Card-$139.99
Memory- OCZ Gold 6GB (3x2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR2 1600 Low
Voltage Desktop Memory Model OCZ3G1600LV6GK-$149.99
As for the graphics card, I was think of getting two for a two-way SLI. So what do you think of my list so far? I researched all of the parts, so I'm pretty sure they are compatible.
I'll throw in my two pence here. I'd get an i7 920 and a decent custom cooler; You'll save money and you can overclock to virtually the same speed. Also, SLI is kind of dubious with some games; you might do better with buying one really good card. Just my thoughts.

Concerning the $2400 Mac, I wouldn't fork over that kind of cash for a system with a less-than-cutting-edge graphics card. I'd want a 5870, or even a 5970.
My brief NewEgg romp yielded the following:
Case: Antec 1200
PSU: Corsair 850TX 850W
Mobo: MSI 790FX-GD70 AM3 AMD 790FX
CPU: AMD Phenom II X4 965 3.4GHz
GPU: Sapphire Radeon HD 5870
RAM: 8GB (4X2) Patriot G Series
HD: 1TB (2x500MB) Western Digital Caviar Black
Keyboard: Logitech G15 Gaming (Wired)
Monitor: HP 27"
Speakers: Logitech Z-2300
Mouse: Logitech Performance Black Tilt Wheel Wireless
For $2100 bucks. That's got the same size monitor, a much juicer graphics card, and a set of speakers that can shake your floor. You could increase costs by using an i7 CPU, but I've had good luck with my 955 in ARMA2.

Whey hey...a new euphemism.Personally, I was going to go with "Flogging the Flashpoint"
-
Like i pointed out before, OFP:DR is simply a Morris Marina;)Or maybe a Trabant.

I was wondering whether the USMC version of the M16A4 really has M4A1 trademarks, as shown on this airsoft rifle?http://img.redwolfairsoft.com/upload/product/img/M4ES-200R-L.jpg
No, an M16 should have M16 markings. Furthermore, actual Marines would probably be unhappy with the bright white paint.
-
of course there will be OFP3:30 max AI
player will have unlimited ammo and textures will be brown-yellow only
it will be USMC (probably in desert ACU with a lot of Rangers/SEALS/101-st patches) vs. Tibetan Monks and Ninja Turtles with Miniguns
there will be 4 weapons (nunchakoo, knife, sharp cucumber and M4A8 with Aimpoint mounted on Acog and 3 vehicles (all in desert camo)
and grass will be indestructible
and PR campaign will be remarkable :D
and user will be banned after registration before posting first post
Funny, I had slightly different information:
* The game will actually use 6 colors: Heroic Caucasian White, Token Black Guy Dark Brown, Dirty Arab Brown, Black, Grey, and Muzzle Flash
* The good guys will be Marines or SEALs. Their mission will be to Protect Freedom.
* The good guys will fight in a Team of Heroes, which will contain the following members, and may have more: One Inner-City Black (Likely to be the Big Machinegunner), one White Guy From New York or Boston, one Cold Sniper, and possibly a Token Arab. They will be lead by a Grizzled But Secretly Caring Officer.
* All enemies will be vaguely Arab or Persian. They will wish to Destroy Freedom.
* The enemies may have evil European Overlords. If so, the overlords will speak with British accents and will be at least vaguely Nazi.
* The M16, being an All American Gun, will be the most powerful rifle in the game. The .223 cartridge will vastly outperform 7.62NATO, not to mention exotic sissypants cartridges like the .338 Lapua or .50 Russian.
* The M1911 will be the perfect pistol. Soldiers will be able to fight effectively using just a .45 pistol, just like in real life.

And what exactly is the reason to tell this to us in ArmA 2 - GENERAL?Troll Bait!

What he said.Have you guys noticed the Intel Mission Contest? Sorry if it's been posted here, lost track of this thread's progression. Look at the contest requirements:
One question: how on earth do you put an objective into the mission in relation to the I7? Unless it's "Go out and buy the I7 processor from Intel". I guess that was the only way to get Intel to agree to such a farce. It's quite funny just to look at it. Guess CM are still trying to milk it.
Looks like it's time to bring back Teh Crap Mishun :D !

My PC decided to make me insane again and from working perfectly yesterday now decided to show a problem suddently, already googled for it but couldnt find a answer so i ask the experts here:I was happily playing through the night and afterwards shut my PC down, next day where i started it it did the usual beep after start but there was no monitor signal.
If i wait a bit longer my Windows7 partition starts normally and i have a wonderfull perfectly normal monitor signal again.
Tried it a few times and each time the same, in the boot screens i get no video signal for some reason.
- 4096MB G-Skill DDR-2 Ram, 4 modules, running in Dual mode.
- GPU ATI/Sapphire HD4870 512MB not OCed
Apart from that my system as it is wasnt changed a bit in the last few months and ran perfectly fine till today.
Well im totally clueless and i wonder if anyone has a idea?
You wouldn't happen to have an older graphics card sitting around? The first thing I'd do when encountering video problems would be to swap out the graphics card for another one. Otherwise, you could try scrubbing your video drivers and installing them fresh.
Could you clarify which boot screens you can't see? The ones from the motherboard or the ones from Windows 7? If it's just the motherboard screens, have you tried accessing BIOS?

:/ move yourself :/i hate "all games about america soldier in desert/asia areas"
buy yourself SoF3, CoD x, DR
i hate "all games but the same location and units" and all "yeaaa f*** special forces with digital desert multicam and Aimpoint on everything"
I cited the Rhodesian Bush War and Congo Civil Wars as examples (Check and see for yourself). Those conflicts were not particularly known for extensive American involvement :j: . Most of the white people running around would probably be ex-colonials like Rhodesians, with maybe some SAS types mucking about.
But there's nothing suggested there that can't/won't be made by the community which is setting one's sights rather low for a new version.Well, yes, the community could make a good African island. The problem is that the AI needs major work before jungle/urban combat will be decent. The AI also needs to be made less lethal and skilled, and inexperienced soldiers should spray 'n pray or quickly retreat. The AI needs to be better at simulating undisciplined troops in order to make this sort of scenario work out.

Well, I'm having lots of fun with ARMA2, but here are my thoughts:
1. Move the combat out of Eastern Europe. I know they're already moving into SE Asia with OA, but I'd really like a campaign in Africa. Think of a massive version of Tonal, where you had mostly jungle and desert. Thrown in some big cities and lots of bushy areas, and you'd have a very different environment from Nogova/Sahrani/Chernarus.
2. Consider setting this campaign in the 1980s or early 1990s. It seems most games today want to showcase the latest Gee-Whiz technology (with the exception of games set in WWII). Instead, have stuff like FALs, G3s, M16A1s, and Uzis. Have little to no infantry tech beyond small-arms and flak vests. Maybe have some SAS/Delta types running around if you want to include stuff like night/thermal vision.
3. Make a game based on conflicts like the Rhodesian Bush War or the Congo Civil Wars. Having major superpowers as the combatants is cool, but it also leaves one wondering why these guys aren't nuking each other. It's far more believable (Unfortunately) that a vicious war could develop between several African nations without anyone elsewhere really giving a damn.
4. You should be able to adjust the windage and elevation of your sights. Additionally, grenade launchers should have working, adjustable sights.
5. Rocket launchers should have backblast.
6. Weapons should jam/overheat if they are subjected to intense punishment.

AGAIN,I say this to any game released. I feel there should be an agency that monitors and tests games before there released. Sort of a professional quality control if you will. Someone who does not work for the game companies with a biias view should test these games and they should not allowed to be released if they fail this testing. I think its about time something like this happens because lets face it, these companies are playing whatever game they want with the consumer and it needs to stop.
THERE IS TOO MUCH MONEY INVOLVED IN VIDEO GAMES NOW! IT SHOULD BE CONTROLLED.
Controlled, why? If it can be proved that a company was blatantly lying about the capabilities of its product, then that company should be guilty of violating various consumer protection laws.
Companies are churning out crap because crap sells. How else can you explain the continuing career of Michael Bay? The most likely scenario is that Codemasters dumbed down OFPDR because they thought that the market for a pure mil-sim wasn't large enough. Mil-sims are a niche market for any number of reasons, including their difficult learning curve and their unpredictable gameplay. Personally, I think most casual gamers want pretty graphics and immediate/simple fun, so that's what most mainstream games offer. There will always be a huge market for casual fun, whether it's in the form of stupid games or stupid movies or something else that's stupid. I don't see why we need an "impartial" regulatory agency to monitor games. Just support the rare studios that do produce expansive and immersive games like ARMA2.

OMG Stop being a liberal and a hypocrite. Crap like this just starts flame wars and offtopic-offtopic discussion. Since OFP/ARMA has been out, I have seen the sickle and hammer posted on this forum, so where is your outrage when it comes to people having their freedoms squashed and millions that were killed under Stalin?Oh lordie. OFP2 vs ARMA2 AND Pinkos vs Righties? All we need to do is add gun control and we'll have the perfect flame war.
Now, on to Sion's words of wisdom:
"It's kind of like the Michael Bay of videogames." - And OFP2 is like allowing Michael Bay to direct Saving Private Ryan?
"It's healthy to have competition." - Which is why they made OFP2 a mil-sim, which is very different from a shooter like MW2. Oh, wait a second...
"I really see Modern Warfare 2 as Hollywood and we're the Cannes" - Well, I see ARMA2 as a love story and MW2 as porno. OFP2 is an attempt to make a porno that's also a love story. Consult your local dirty movies shop to see how well this sort of compromise works (Alternately, try to imagine Ron Jeremy appearing in "The Notebook").

"Active protection systems have nothing to do with "force fields"."
I think that was sarcasm on tcp's part. He did have a point; It seems like every country either claims that their tank has a super-defense system, or has super-invincible armor. One example that comes to mind is the Challenger 2, it was often said to have super-armor right up until insurgents started shooting holes in them with late-model RPGs.
-
Err, a T-90 is a big block of metal with a large engine in it. Such things generally generate infrared signatures. As for ARENA, well, tcp said it best. ARENA has not been tested in a major combat situation against missiles like Javelin. Also, to my knowledge at least, the Russian anti-missile systems have been traditionally limited to engaging missiles at roughly the same level as the tank, and a top-down missile might zip right through the "hole" in the top of an ARENA system's coverage.
-
"how they function in society ?"
They can't, that's why they have the time for lots of flame wars on the internet.

Let's try this:

Considering that AMD is flirting with bankruptcy, I'd think now would be a really strange time to announce Nvidia's death.
Edit: Also, while 2009 is going to be a doozy for virtually any company, between 2007 and 2008 Nvidia posted a 37% increase in profits.

Sorry wolle but yes the AI in ARMAII will kill you from 2 miles away with an AK. We have many videos of guys with snipers 2 miles away killing 1 inf guy while the next guy next to him instantly knows where he is 2 miles away and kills him. Many youtube videos on this.
Im also sorry that I have not seen the AI in OFPDR sitting around doing nothing. They always shoot at me. The only difference between OFDR and ArmaII is that they miss me alot in OFDR and in ARMAII they get you within 2-3 shots.
I just did the airport mission in OFPDR and had to do it 12 times because the guys in the tower would get me. So they know how to shoot, its just that its a little more fun game wise when they don't actually kill you in the first 2 shots like in ARMA.
Err, where did this "2 miles" figure come from? That's over 3000 meters. I played ArmA alot, and I've been playing ArmA2 alot, and I've never seen the AI make a 3000 meter shot. In my experience, 1000 meters of stand off distance is more than enough to put you safely out of range of any AI infantry except snipers.

Hey kavoven,
I have an Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 Pro, which works well with my CPU (An AMD Quad-Core). I believe that it comes with a bracket that converts it so that it can fit on a socket 775. It keeps my CPU nice and cool (It's currently at 39 C), and it's a little smaller than some of the top-notch coolers. A Noctua NH-U12P is a real nice cooler, but it's a big sucker. On the other hand, this Zalman fan is an example of a small, low-profile CPU cooler.
-
You know, I think this was from Calvin and Hobbes: "A good compromise will leave everybody mad."
-
If you want to play ARMA 2, you're going to want a new CPU, which will probably necessitate a new motherboard (Which means you'll have to replace the RAM). Some games put the majority of stress on the graphics card, but ARMA 2 hits the whole system, especially once you put down lots of units. Not to mention, once you replace the CPU, motherboard, and graphics card, you're probably going to need to replace the power supply (I would not try to build a gaming rig on a generic power supply). Basically, you should do a complete tear-down and rebuild, or better yet, build the new PC in a case with better ventilation than an HP. Just switching out the HD and graphics card is cheaper, certainly, but it's sort of a half-assed solution and won't really result in a good gaming PC. However, only switching out those two parts is easy and fast, which is probably why he's recommending it (In his defense, this is how all salesmen/tradesmen work. You don't do a full project if the customer is happy with a partial project).
If you're getting cold feet about the prospect of building a computer (really, it's not that difficult to do), start checking out a custom computer shop before you do what amounts to a graphics card replacement (replacing the hard drive is not going to appreciably speed up the computer). Also, if you only wanted to replace the hard drive and graphics card, just do it yourself. It's extremely easy to do; one of the easiest things one can do is a graphics card replacement. It was actually the first thing I ever did with a computer.
Codemasters Expands For Nice New Shooter
in OFFTOPIC
Posted
No need to be so critical. For all we know, Codemasters will promise to create the best corridor shooter ever made and will end up releasing a fun sandbox game.
