New Sound Mod in the making, slowly but surely
TangoRomeo replied to chammy's topic in ARMA 2 & OA - ADDONS & MODS: DISCUSSION
What Mark said. If the player is on the receiving end, 200m away from the muzzle, he doesn't want to hear the shooters internal weapon mechanics working, that give the weapon a very characteristic sound close up. In the end it`s all about immersion and a believable athmosphere, not so much about trying to recreate the dynamics of the real deal. As this is not possible. :) -
TR Soundmodules: Fixed/Rotary Wing AC & Tracked/Wheeled Vehicles

Thanks all. My plan is to keep updates brief, and compatibility to future A2 versions, eventually OA - though i have high hopes for the stock sfx department in the latter: http://pro.bistudio.com/index.php/services/audio-recording-studio/gallery.html ATM i´m looking for a, preferably complete, .cfg sound reference. It`s still alot of trial and error fiddling with the parameters. You´ll especially notice with accelleration and startup/shutdown sounds. -

I honestly don't know if the engine sounds for the SU-25 are correct. :D Fat chance that someone visiting this forum has the recording equipment and access to a {insert vehicle here} for a recording session. Like they did for F...Point IfIAYBR-NDE Best thing that could happen would be the sound guys, and people who heard these things in RL, sticking heads together. I hope it's better than the default though. Hope someone ports over the weapon sounds from BC when it arrives. And the audio engine too. :D MRdV-ChBE0A -

Looking into. In general, AC need longer startup times, as they spool up almost immediately to 100% from cold cockpit, wish it was somewhat longer like with Helicopters. ---------- Post added at 09:59 PM ---------- Previous post was at 09:41 PM ---------- Ty luemmel. - if someone provides a config, i´ll provide the samples. -

Ty Simon. I searched high and low, but quality source material is a rare occurance. For some vehicles i use generic sounds, or synthesize them, i.e. main rotor sounds, as it's somewhat difficult to get this sound isolated from mediocre youtube videos (background chatter, wind gusts, cell phone mic, etc.) Example. For the main rotor sound i look up the helicopters main rotor hub r.p.m and number of blades for the blade passing frequency. Let's take the AH-64D. It´s main rotor hub spins at ~ 292 r.p.m. and it has 4 blades installed. (292 / 60) x 4 = 19.47 hz This means every second there are 19.47 blade slap impulses. There are several audio editing programs /filters, plugins available to achieve the desired result. I´m using Cooledit (now called adobe audition) for this example. First i generate some brown noise by creating a new file, then > Generate > Noise > Brown Noise. Next i open the Doppler Shifter plugin (>Effects>Time/Pitch>Doppler Shifter). First i want the sound to be stationary, so i select "circular" for Path Type. Using the calculated value for blade passing freq. i´m now adjusting radius & velocity for a 19.5 times/sec cycle. A starting value would be Radius: 2.7, Velocity: 330m/sec. It´s somewhat trial &error. If i have an ok sound, i apply some EQ and mix in some slight tail rotor noise. That's basically it. If however, anyone has high quality audio recordings of the real vehicles, i´m all "ears" :) -

Do you prefer English or localized games?
TangoRomeo replied to celery's topic in ARMA 2 & OA - GENERAL
Every title should ship with localized subtitles/ interface. As for audio, entirely depends on the quality of the localization - if decent speakers and audio mastering are not available - i prefer the original, in case of need with subs. I.e. I found Blackhawk Down unbearable to watch in german, on the other hand Gert Günther Hoffmann sounds better than William Shatner, for the characters he played :D. -
I´m sure DCS A-10 is going to be great from a simulation aspect, a welcome addition to my collection. From a value pov though, i would have rather seen them opt for the F/A-18C & carrier ops on dcs standard - it just provides so much more content and mission variety than the A-10 could provide.

:bounce3: Just gave 1.05 a whirl, and it works a treat - from what i´ve seen so far a nice improvement over 1.04. Now trying the mini campaign. Thank you BIS team, Chapeau and Merry Christmas!

@shadow Guess i was expecting a more practical looking and less fancy approach. I.e. Less of that More of this Otherwise i´m enjoying the game, aside from some balancing (mainly the dreaded creature levelling) and AI issues.

The US needs us (exporting/producing countries) as much as we need it as a consumer. With numerous foreign holders of treasury securities worth $3.5 trillion USD, there`s a valid interest that above isn't going to happen anytime soon. If we fall, we will all fall together, it won't be a question of who suffers most.

The progressive disparity between world (capitalist) demand and availability of fossil fuels is a recursive relation. Diminishing or threatened availability directly translates into foreign policy of the worlds most influential actors - forcing physical or political access to regions that act as supplier or transit for energy. Not just for $ and market control, but also self-preserving the status quo as long as possible. Sure. Every industrialized and developing nation has it's share. Some carry a hip bag, others a Bergen. If you take that whole "global warming caused by man-made emissions" talk and connect it to soon expected peak oil, it actually starts to make sense. It´s an effort trying to move towards more sustainable economys in face of global industrial decline. See also Key oil figures were distorted by US pressure, says whistleblower

To me, most clothing and armor looks like someone tried to mix anime with goth fetish apparel.

The human brain is not particulary good at multitasking. When trying to do several tasks at once, each task receives only partial attention. That may be fine in some situations, however, a lack of focus in traffic is not a good thing. In germany the fine is 40 EUR (59 USD) + 1 pt. on your administrative driving record. An accumulation of 18 pts on that record will get your driving license confiscated. I agree tough, some people don't need a cell phone in their hand to endanger themselves and others in traffic.

I didn't progress that much within the game yet, some thoughts though. The story borrows from here and there, most notably LOTR and Excalibur, but i dig it so far. Voice acting and character (race) interaction are well done and interesting, as are the facial- and combat animations. Per character tactics script customisation is a feature more genre titles should have. The mature feel of the game does not stem so much from the celebration of violence, as from the dialogues. Apparently Bioware didn't think so. Infact, i thoroughly dislike their PR, toting DA as "Sword porn". It would have done equally well with less gore. The weakness of DA is immediately noticeable for a 2009 title, graphics. While character face models look quite good, the environment, equipment and objects aren´t for the most part. The levels i played so far are small and with a linear approach. Textures are low-res, everything looks washed out and blunt, especially in daylight.Depeding on lighting conditions, surfaces which should resemble metal, often look like anything but. Proportions, in particular those of armor and weapons, are also a bit on the "fantasy" side. Nevertheless, i enjoyed The Witcher and Drakensang, DA was a good addition to that collection.

2 million malaria deaths per annum, 500.000 regular flu deaths every season - where are the headlines? If swine-flu is that potent as the WHO and media wants us to believe, why aren't there generics available -... because it would require ado of Patents held by transnational corporations? The last time swine-flu was in the media was in the 70`s. There never was an epidemic, although the CDC made it appear so. At that time about 40 million US citizens were vaccinated with insufficiently tested vaccines. Some people died, several hundred got the Guillain-Barre-Syndrom and other side effects as a direct result of the shot. The "immunization" did prove more dangerous than the flu itself, the Gvt. had to compensate. Today, the consequence is legal immunity for the likes of GlaxoSmithKline, Baxter et al, so they can throw untested dreck on the market and maximize profit. There is an epidemic. It´s called lobbying and greed, far more vicious than any virus.

Close Quarter Combat is impossible in Arma2
TangoRomeo replied to santafee's topic in ARMA 2 & OA - GENERAL
My main gripe is not so much with AI precision, decision making or terrain negotiation, although it does have a noticeable effect on the SP/CoOp experience, but the control mechanics. The overall sluggishness adversely affects fluid and precise player movement, especially in confined spaces. -
