4 wheel quads might have been a better choice for the sim. many spec ops use these today.light mobile and can be air dropped with ease. also carry quite a bit of kit on them.
+1 on the great idea.. Would solve some of the stupid physics/sounds/handling on the bikes.

Just a tip: if you want to be taken seriously, I'd suggest making your posts readable. I've read through your post 3-4 times and I'm still not quite sure what you are suggesting (commanding dogs or something?).^^ Some people are not native English speakers and perhaps have difficulties in articulating their points. I read it once, and while it was not english literature it was more then adequate to get the point accross!
@DMarwick - wow nice mod! Definately could have some fun uses when playing PvP, as you said downed pilot, escaped prisoner etc..
What happens to the scent smell when a player enters vehicles?
Great mod can't wait to see the final version

I had similar problems, and I can say that at the moment on my rig which is pretty much exact to yours -
i7 @ 4.2
GTX295 650/1500/1100
Xfi Xtreme Gamer
I can get 60Fps 98% of the time in multiplayer and armoury, however there seems to be issues still in SP where it still goes down to a crawl (say Razor Two onwards)
The best results I have had all come from Win 7 7232 build.
Using 182.5s and Crysis64.exe trick (note: no -winxp) flag.
Today I installed 186.24 for fun and found them faster then 182.5s however I have not played enough to say how stable they were.
Also run HT off, and Tripple buffer on. Setting Very High Textures/Very High Mem/Very High AA rest normal aside from PP which is on low I managed ~6200 in ArmaMark II (V-sync off) and ~5200 v-sync on (only the space capsule is below 50 fps @ ~39-40, rest is 55fps +)
As i tell all people, when playing with these settings forget testing in SP, use armoury and or Editor (Suggest turn V-sync off as well).. that way you will see the difference right away and not have script/ai/god knows what bugs kill the game for you.
I am not too phased, I gave up on SP due to the massive amounts of bugs that are still present, and since Multi Player now works perfect and mostly in the high 50's for average I am happy. As people say this game can get away with ~40 fps consistant and it would be a dream (well perhaps a little more for fast flying!) but when it goes from 40->15 in cities etc it reall sucks
Anyway its _FINALLY_ good to see this... its what I wanted for last 3 weeks!
Just hang in there chaps, while it may be very frustrating to have a superduper pc that cannot seem to run the game very well, I am well aware BIS are working very hard to iron out the issues. Please do continue to feedback but keep it constructive and informative.
Thanks
Thank you, makes me feel better.

I realise that the ingame interface is not a major issue, however its so dated and its probably one of the easiest things to change in the game.. Really sloppy that it has not evolved.
1) Team member icons! Wow, they look like gfx from my Commodore 64. Instead of the really zombie like faces how about just use icons? perhaps icons to let us know what their role is.. Rather then a huge face and a small icon, just have a "nice" looking icon. They can be smaller and less intrusive. Also would be nice to select where on your interface they go? ie along top, along bottom, right, left etc..
2) While we are displaying icons, perhaps some neat small icons that tell you a couple things (depending on diffuculty), such as current formation (line, staggered clmn, etc etc), current movement type (say safe, aware, danger)
3) The in game selection menu. I do like the numbered system and ovbiously as you get better you pretty much remember all these, but why not use a pie select system? Ie hold a button and drag to which thing you would like to do.. I know it sounds consoleish but the system is more intuitive and hence it works!
Say along these lines?
http://tremulous.net/forum/index.php?topic=10269.0
Clean, much faster to access and use when doing so manually? Obviously can be an option as I understand not all people like the same things.
4) The ingame text comments.. I am sure we can make this look smarter.. been like this for 10 years!
generally the UI feels dated, and does need a face lift. Once again I completely understand its a simulator, but surley these things are easy to change and I think would be worth while.
Anyway its a suggestion :)
EDIT: Sorry mod's didnt see the big fat sticky on interface!

He made a very good point. If we use our common-sense then its obvious he didn't mean it would be acceptable to play this game at 5 FPS, did he?!
He was just stating that there are way too many fanboys who see Arma 2 as more of a benchmark than a game - at least that is the way it seems to me from this area of the forums.
Oh, and another thing:
IF I WAS BOHEMIA I WOULD RELEASE THIS GAME IN ITS BETA STAGE...WHY??
BECAUSE THERE ARE LOADS OF CHUMPS LIKE YOU GUYS READY TO TEST IT ALL WEEKEND!!
LOL ...PLAY THE DAMM GAME AND GO AND WHINGE TO YOUR MUM INSTEAD.
Wow, 3rd post and already a troll. Really why bother to start arguments? Grow up mate.
As for this topic, I seriously doubt anyone would care about fps for a "e-penis" reason and obviously their reasons for trying to sort out this is due to the fact that it is unplayable for their tastes... Perhaps when you play the game you will come to the same conclusion.

System 112: SLI was not tested at all I dont recommend SLI for lack of benefit for 2 cards for any game
Good work, however I strongly disagree with 12.
That is a very broad generalisation which is completly false, out of the 10 odd games I play the only 2 giving me grief are Empire:TW and Arma2.. Everything else is much much better on my dual gpu solution then any single GPU and usually means I can play 60+ FPS min with 8x-16AA 16AF and all details on max.
-
You will find boot camp runs super smooth for most... The gripes are later missions esp around towns etc.
As for "cleaner" PSU possibly fixing things, well unless your previous PSU was inadequate (which usually means problems in every game etc, even in desktop) then its almost impossible for that to be the cause.. ESP since you were running mid range card and are running mid range card now which does not really use large power draw.
-
Well they are already a big way there in UAV view.. surley they can tweak that and fix it up. WOuld love to do some low altitude helo in pitch black
-
Check in your .cfg profiles and see what your GPU has been detected as memory wise.
If you can use the crysis64.exe rename trick, try running with and without the -winxp flag. It worked better for me without..
-
Yeah I guess that’s true, Arma just doesn't have the anatomy to have walk in buildings properly set up or the means to handle a JUMP function. Never quite understood why this was never implemented.LOL, have you ever watched soldiers jumping about in battles? No jump was super annoying when you were trying to get over fences etc in Arma but this has been solved with the "step over"
LOL tell you what, strap a 25kg pack to your back and jump and let me know if you think you would do that in battle!
-
Get the demo :)
Tanks can demolish fences (picket, cyclone, concrete) and posts etc, but not houses. Sorry have not spent enough time driving 4x4s to answer that question, but I have not been stuck on anything "small" yet in the time I have played..

It did on my version being the Metaboli German Digi download. It may differ as BIS implied this is handled by the publishers?
I actually used up all my activations trying various OS's to get game to perform, and the place I purchased from re-enabled my activations after explaining my issue.
Someone did say in a previous post to run arma2.exe with "\Revoke" or was it "/revoke"? But I can't confirm as I have not tried yet!
-
LOL, welcome to the matrix. Sli is hard to get going and even then you really wont notice the benefits in SIngle Player missions as they destroy the FPS.
As suggested above try 182.5's.
I dont know if you can do it with steam, but rename your exe to crysis64.exe (or just crysis for 32 bit os) and see if that kicks SLi in?
Don't know what FPS you are getting now, but when testing FPS i really suggest you turn V-sync off and use the editor part of game + FRAPS.. For example I get 35-40 in say Razor Two, but in the editor I get 140-160FPS in same spot..
At the moment Nvidia and this game ====== MASSIVE headache, but you should be able to reach 40-50 in say MP quite easily once everything is going.
PS> If you can't use the rename trick to get SLi going, perhaps you can use nhance to load the profile (i think there is post already if you search which outlines this for steam users)

Sorry, but I personally disagree to some extent .. LOL, if you know something is broken on your system why not try and fix it? I pay huge $$ per year to keep up with the bleeding edge on my PC so that I can enjoy everything in full glory at full speed..
It honestly took me over a week to get this game from avg of ~30 fps to flat tac 60 but it was worth it. I know arma does not need 60fps by any means, but having solid "consistant" fps is important. Anyway what I am trying to say, is if I gave up the game would still run like shit for me.. Obviously bitching and moaning on low->mid systems is futile as some peoples expectation are to high
EDIT: Just to clairfy, I agree that FPS is not everything, but if you clearly have issues dont give up! :) But then again my FPS scale (expectation) is way higher then most people

To answer your question, Frag: I read this rule in several overclocker's guides and until now I'm - that is my CPU - am/is doing fine.Maximum temp according to spec finder is around 73°C, OC'd and under Prime I got around 62°.
I think you are misunderstanding the Intel Thermal spec, it does not give you max temp as in _limit_ of temp, but rather what temp will be at max TDP.. ie the top of cpu @ full TDP.. enabling OEMs etc to design cooling solutions
"Thermal Specification: The thermal specification shown is the maximum case temperature at the maximum Thermal Design Power (TDP) value for that processor. It is measured at the geometric center on the topside of the processor integrated heat spreader. For processors without integrated heat spreaders such as mobile processors, the thermal specification is referred to as the junction temperature (Tj). The maximum junction temperature is defined by an activation of the processor Intel® Thermal Monitor. The Intel Thermal Monitor’s automatic mode is used to indicate that the maximum TJ has been reached. "
Which means its the TEMP on cpu top (physically, if you put your finger on it) at the max power draw (TDP). Ie 73C is not your CPU's max temp!
What you need to base max temps on is core temp, and Tjunction or distance to. I honestly don't know about AM2/AM3 cpu's so check in XtremeSystems as suggested above!

I would suggest a mild OC on the CPU by someone that knows what they are doing.. or if you are prepared to get aftermarket cooling you could get some decent clocks say 3.5Ghz+ quite easily. But as Alpha said, I wouldn't do it unless you have some experience or do some reading.. (It is really easy once you know what is what!) And as for the damage of components, uless you OC to an inch of the components life don't worry about that aspect... do some reading or ask your mates!
Also as per BIS post, try 182.5's and some of the help there however the 8800GTX is a little long in the tooth these days ...
-
Being a nVidia owner, I would suggest only to use 182.5's for this game. Its the only driver that has delivered any performance on my system and has been more stable then the others too.
As for physX, did nothing for me at all but everyones mialge varies
-
You have to install, unless the program is self contained.. (Few are these days besides perhaps tiny apps!)
But as soon as you install Win 7 and arma2 you will either want to keep it, or ditch it :)
-
Rule of thumb regarding intel CPU's is maxtemp - 10 degrees (°C).^^ Who's rule of thumb is that!?! Whoa! I wouldn't be running my cpu at 90C unless I was trying to make a cup of coffee or cook some eggs.
As for overclocking effects, it all depends on what your GPU is like? What are you running? To be honest for a 24/7 OC I wouldn't run my CPU too much past mid 70's (priming).
Easiest way is OC it, run some tests and see if the performance gain is worth the OC.
-
Likewise, 182.5's have been the _ONLY_ driver set I have managed to use to get SLi working and has been compatible with all my games. 185's have been an absolute disaster, lol worst drivers I have ever had on any GPU! Problems with a lot of my games

This is the benchmark mission on the demo versionVista x64 17 FPS avg ( I cant remember exact number it was in the teens though)
Windows 7 x64 build 7100 38 FPS avg
game went from totaly un playable to my 38fps avg with high settings and aa / af on veryhigh
I almost shelved this game....I have noticed an increase in FPS all together with win 7, I pre ordered it after using it for 45 min.
Q6700 OC 3.33
9800 GX2 oc
8gb 800mhz ddr2
running off of a 750gb WD HD
^^ Win 7 obviously enabled SLi. Though having installed this on a few fresh installs win 7 7232 has been by far the best performing for me.

If you have a digital download version, like the one from Metaboli or petergames.de, you can revoke the activation before you uninstall Arma 2 or before you reformat and reinstall Windows. All you need to do is open a command prompt and go to the Arma 2 installation directory and run "Arma2.exe /revoke". This will revoke the license and put it back into your license pool.
I don't think this is the case. I had my activation blocked (installed game on fresh installs of diff OS's on my PC). Securerom told me that they WONT do anything about it, its up to the digital content provider to reinstate any further license.
Basically it took me a week for Metaboli (sp?) to reinstate my activations, by going through the Level 2 tech support. They were nice and did it, and I did ask them if there is anyway for me to revoke next time and they simply said no, and to email them if there is a problem in the future.
Perhaps that /revoke depends on the publisher.
PS> I am only going by the emails I got from their tech support (who solved it for me)

Do you have dual 295 with 1,8GB each or 1GB each?
Also wonder how you are able to turn of Hypertreading in the Bios, as my bios (Dell) don't have that option, or it's called something else now? Wonder if that could stop the game from crashing.
My specs are:
Dell XPS
I7 965 Extreme@3,2GHz
6GB ram
Dual 295's (1,8GB each)
SSD dics in non raid
Vista x64 Ultimate and Win 7 x64 Ultimate RC1 build 7100 (dualboot)
Not sure on the Dell, but I assume it would be in there, perhaps try dell support forums. I haven't had 1 crash now in about 15+ hrs of MP (Domination/Warefare etc) and this is since turning HT off. COuld be unrelated but since the game does not have negative performance with HT off I'll leave it off as its the only thing I play now (and prob for a long time to come ;))
PS> All GTX295s have 1792mb ram or more precisley 2x 896mb as each gpu has seperate memory.. Its misleading advertising re the 1792
PPS> Well there is the Asus dual GTX285 which they still call a 295 for some reason..
Anyway I'll hang out for next patch and better drivers to see what other performance can be unlocked
-
Yeah I would try XP. It seems the game can only use up to 2047Mb, Xp would be fine and the engine was designed around this 32bit OS (LOl well prob win 98!)...
But then again the game seems to be inconsistent accross various platforms so just do it on both and see which runs better..
PS> 6Gb Ram is prob i7? What GPU?

Please fix the shiny textures on what are matte surfaces..
Eg - Aircraft such as the Su, shines like its just had 3 layers of wax.
Damage textures on motorbike - tyres etc shine as the bike gets damaged, looks really bad.
Heap of matte surfaces shine and it often feels like I am playing toy models.
